I have a question rather than a comment. Do you think a African American will ever win Big Brother.

...its well documented that a black person could never win Big Brother or Survivor. It has something to do with genetics and breeding during the slave days.

I think the post was sarcasm, because the original question was a bit ridiculous.

...I'm being dead serious Buggy. Its a well documented fact that blacks lack the capacity to be reality tv show winners or major league managers.

It all goes back to the slave days when slave owners bred blacks to be great athletes so they could be more productive in the fields. Maybe things would've been different if the slave owners bred their most manipulative slave girls with their most backstabbing slave males. Now THAT would produce genetic line of uber-realityshowdaws the likes of which the world has never seen.

Yes. I think it's entirely possible. Look how close Danielle came...she didn't win because she stabbed all but one of her hg's in the back. It shows that with some luck and possible strategy anyone can win. I think what makes it harder is the black to white ratio is very unbalanced.

I disagree totally with your black to white ratio comment...insinuating that blacks only vote for blacks and whites only vote for whites is in itself a racist comment...remember who won last season...an asian women...if anything, these games come down to who stabbed you in the back less and for that reason Marvin has a good chance of winning...so far, I can't think of anyone who he has out and out betrayed...if he loses it is poor planning and wishywashy strategy on his part...

7. "RE: Marvin"
I'm thinking that Mouthie was referring strictly to the mathematical odds against a black person winning, considering the numbers. Come on...Marvin was our only black contestant this time! And I love him, yes I do! And yes, Jun did win last year, that doesn't mean that the odds were against it. Yes, I think it is entirely possible that a black person could win. BUT I would like to see a house set up with a more racially balanced population in the house. Perhaps use demographics similar to the United States, but limited to US citizens..just for once to see how things fall. If I'm not mistaken, they already don't allow Canadians (which is weird, to me.) So the same ratio of blacks(say 3 african americans and one of eastern indian descent) as caucasions & latins (including hispanic & italians), with perhaps an american indian or two, along with a 2 or 3 orientals.
But wait, my issue with that would be...what if they naturally group together...oh crap. Here I am trying to figure out the perfect sociological combination, and I'm already disagreeing with myself. I can't imagine the CBS crowd agreeing with me.
So what if they just put a bunch of moonies and 21st century flower children in there...then what? Or some scientologists and some wiccans? Hell, how about a whole group of people with bi-polar disorder? No...MPD...that would be awesome. The dog and I would be happy to be a consultant on that show. HOOO HOOO the possibilites are endless.
Anyway, yes, I think an african Am person could win, the odds are just against it numerically, ya see?

Thank you vix, that is exactly what I meant. If there is one black person out of 13 people total, he has a 1/13 chance of winning. That is all.

Perhaps use demographics similar to the United States, but limited to US citizens.

Just for the heck of it, I looked at the racial makeup of the U.S. on the U.S. Census Web Site. The census counts Hispanics as White but then breaks them down separately. These figures are rounded.

White Non Latino 62% (or 8 houseguests)
African American 12% (or 1 1/2 houseguests)
Asian 3.6% (or 1/2 houseguest)
Latino 12% (or 1 1/2 houseguests)
Other (2 houseguests)

LOL!

Great stats boaster. Also, statistically, there should be probably one more woman than man. And about 1/2 a gay person. A bisexual eskimo would work swimmingly.

In a few more decades, the show will be call "Hermano Grande" as Latinos are projected to be the majority race in the US. This is true, actually.

Actually that doesn't fit the definition of racism. Racism is a belief that one race is superior to another, not the belief that people don't vote outside their race.

Next season I want to see a really fat person, a person with Tourette's Syndrome and a pair of conjoined twins who have to keep their switching a secret for 5 weeks. Boy that would be a challenge. A stutterer would be nice. And perhaps cross dresser.

Ummm, there's lots of crossdressers on the show already. Every single one of those women wears pants or shorts all the time. None of them ever dress like a REAL woman and wear dresses or skirts.

Ummm, how does wearing a dress or skirt make you a "real" woman? And I'm talking about a male cross dresser. Dress, makeup, nails, heels and all. Shorts are for men? That's news to me. Plus, women's pants are specifically made for women. So, no, there are no crossdressers on the show.

If you go the library and check out any good book on the history of clothing, you will discover that it is only very recently that women have begun to wear trousers or shorts. Before the twentieth century, those items were considered masculine apparel. I realize that the concept of "change over time" can be difficult to grasp, but it's important to remember that definitions of gender that hold currency today are not the same definitions that our parents lived with, nor their parents. And I think that if you look at places in American society where people are still segregated by sex, such as a parochial school where students have uniforms, the female students wear skirts, not girl-pants.

If you re-read my previous message, look for the sarcasm...

102. "RE: Marvin"
Actually, there are several good books on the history of clothing and fashion, much of it emerging from a new emphasis on the history of consumer culture, but an older portion of the historiography comes at it from a material culture perspective. Consider Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's latest book on homespun cloth and its meaning in American culture. (You may recognize Ulrich's name because she is a Harvard professor of History and her book on Martha Ballard, a midwife in Maine who kept a diary between 1785 and 1812, won the Pulitzer Prize in History in the early 1990s. She also participated in a special about Martha Ballard and life in early America for PBS.) There are several scholars currently working on their own books about clothing; I have met some at them at conferences at places like the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, the Program in Early American Economy and Society at the Library Company of Philadelphia, and Winterthur Museum, Gardens, and Library. Visit the library at your local university and ask a librarian for assistance and I am sure that you will be able to find a GOOD book on the history of clothing.

My point in the last post, however, had much to do with the hyperbole which has been used throughout this thread as a way of making an argument, masterfully done initially by Shakes, our favorite clown, but followed up by others. I tried to use the same sort of method but I was apparently too subtle so my meaning did not come through. I will try to be more plain now. I thought that you were suggesting that a crossdresser would be a good choice for the cast because that person would either tittilate or disgust the audience. I wanted people reading this thread to think about exactly why a crossdresser might be tittilating or disgusting. Considering the way that others involved in this thread have challenged ideas about race and asked us to think in new ways, I wanted to also challenge people to look at gender in new ways as well. Why should we assume that a crossdresser must be male? After all, as I already said, it is only relatively recently that women have started wearing pants/trousers. The first women who wore those articles of clothing were considered odd or deviant or, even, crossdressers. As an example, consider Louise Clappe, a doctor's wife who accompanied her husband to California in 1851 during the Gold Rush. Louise came from a good eastern family and was horrified when she arrived in the mining camp to discover that some women wore trousers while they worked. She thought that they were certainly "unwomanly." Alternately, look at the diaries of some of the women who crossed the continent in covered wagons during the 1840s and 1850s. Some of them wore a type of trousers called bloomers because that was what was easiest for the type of trip that they were making, while others refused because that style of clothing was associated with the Seneca Falls woman's right convention and they did not want to be identified with suffragists who were demanding too many rights for women, activists who wanted women to be able to participate in political and civil society and not merely be confined to the home. Do you see how we have experienced a paradigm shift in terms of what we consider appropriate clothing for women since the middle of the nineteenth century? That was my point: why do we still find male crossdressers so tittilating and/or disgusting when we have managed to get over such feelings about women as they have adopted certain styles of clothing that were once considered exclusively masculine? In the end, I thought that this might help us to better discuss the sorts of things that we find tittilating, disgusting, exciting, interesting, or whatever else that keeps us tuning in to watch these various reality shows. How does our way of viewing the world influence how we interpret the material that the networks edit together for us to watch? Are we being responsible consumers if we just accept all of it? I would argue that the reason that we all participate in these forums is because we are not willing to just settle for what the networks give us. We want to talk about all of it. We want to debate all of it.

I'm sorry to all of you who have waded through this post and only discovered at the end that I (hopefully) managed to tie it back to reality television. As a professional historian who worked so hard to earn my graduate degrees, comments like "A good book on the history of clothing...LMAO" really set me off because it showed so little respect for my profession, the people in it, and the work that they produce. I'm not asking anybody to agree with me, simply to keep an open enough mind to engage in a productive dialogue.

Sorry to disappoint, alwaysintruble!
I know it was a long post with lots of examples, but I've learned from past exchanges that some people do not understand theories unless they come with some evidence to help explain them...

Can I take another stab at linking it all back to reality television? My point was to talk about the assumptions that we all have about the way that certain people are supposed to be - and that the people who produce reality television play off of those assumptions. Did you see the special about Big Brother on VH1 on Tuesday night? Some former houseguests indicated that as soon as they arrived in the house they realized that they had been cast to play a particular role (jock, b!tch, idiot, dizzy woman, mother figure, bully) and they did not particularly like being pigeonholed into that category, as if that was all there was to their personality. In post #104, uberspoon says that he dislikes that so many gay men in reality television conform to a particular stereotype and that the producers of these programs don't seem to put much effort into finding a more diverse representation of gay people. I would argue that this is because they assume that the audience has certain expectations of how a gay person acts so any gay man who auditions for the show must fit that stereotype or not be selected. I have black friends who complain that all too often the black man on Survivor turns out to be musclebound, cocky, and lazy. They want to see a broader cross-section of black men represented on the show. The issue that I was trying to address is what role we as viewers play in helping to perpetuate certain social expectations, how our reactions to the people on reality shows shape larger experiences as we lead out daily lives away from the television set. Ideas about appropriate gender roles, race relations, and other issues have changed over time. As reality television watchers, we are participating in a cultural movement that is changing the nature of network television. I was hoping that we could think about how we react to the types of people that the networks present on these shows has a larger impact on how we view American culture in general, how we think about political and social issues.

The other point that I wanted to make was in response to suggestions that the casts of these shows should include crossdressers, fat people, people with Tourrette's Syndrome, and others who have some sort of shock value. I don't watch these programs because I want to see some sort of "freak" show (though I do like being exposed to all kinds of different people so I have no objection to whoever they decide to put in the cast). The reason that I watch the show is because it is so sociologically fascinating to see how these various people relate to each, what they will say to each other's faces, what they will only say to the camera, how they establish a code of ethics (loose as it may be) for playing the game and determine when and if another player departs from that code of ethics. The suggestion that we have all sorts of "novelty" cast members really turns reality television into lowbrow entertainment, but I think that it has so much more potential. This thread started when somebody asked if an African American could win Big Brother. That shows that some of us are interested in analyzing larger issues, that we're not tuning in just for slaps and giggles. I'm not a huge fan of the gimmick reality contestant (Charla and Mirna from Amazing Race, for example) who may or may not be exploited by the show. I am much more interested in the types of relationships that people are forming. Suggesting that the show include certain types of people, like a crossdresser, just for the purpose of shock value does us all a disservice by suggesting that we are not capable of appreciating such programs on a much higher level.

I would like to see the types of people I suggested for the very reason that you stated. To see how they relate to each other. It would probably be a freak show, but that's not why I would like to see those types of people. It would make the show much more intereting to me. It seems they have the same great looking, ripped bodied people every season. It gets boring. You made an assumption of why I would like to see those people, which really isn't fair. You should have asked me instead of assuming.

Hi Cookie! I'm sorry if you thought that I was making assumptions about your tastes. Honestly, it was never my intention to put words in your mouth. I tried to take great efforts to keep my wording as broad as possible for just that reason. I was trying to comment on the types of ideas that I thought the "public" in general held, not you in particular. Again, I apologize for any confusion this caused.

Hi HistDet.

I wanted to comment on the C&M combo from AR. While they may have been added because of the gimmick, they did not cave into that. They worked together as a team both pulling their own weight. Charla did as well as anyone else and better than most. She did not play into the role that may have been tagged for her.

I don't think you should have used C&M as the gimmick. I think Alison and Donny were much more gimmicky and failed much sooner because of that....

I think that those who come into the house may realize that they are there for a "role" but it is up to them whether or not they play along with that role. That is part of the "game" but they could show something different in the DR. The problem is that many do not. Which leads me to wonder if they really have more than the "role" they were assigned....

Thanks, mama. I agree with a lot of what you said about Charla & Mirna and Alison & Donny. Certainly, Alison & Donny were there as a gimmick (and I was glad to see them go). I only chose Charla & Mirna as an example because much of the conversation had revolved around contestants who had some sort of distinguishing feature that set them apart from the average reality show contestant. Despite Alison's fame (infamy) from BB4, when you look at at cast picture of TAR5 your eyes are immediately drawn to Charla.

I also agree that Charla managed to escape being a gimmick and actually became somebody that most viewers admired. (Her cousin, on the other hand, was not nearly as popular.)

I do have to disagree, however, about whether or not BB HGs can escape playing a "role" because it is ultimately CBS that chooses which footage to air. I have posted a long rant about Drew in the "Diane is so unattractive" thread on Bashers because I find CBS's depiction of him as some sort of Golden Boy to be completely inconsistent with the way many of us see him act on the live feeds. Drew emotionally abuses Diane. Drew is not very bright and has to have plans explained to him several times. (The unholy alliance that backdoored Karen...? Diane had to explain it to Drew three times - but CBS didn't show us that. Cowboy understood it the first time.) Now, we don't get to see much of Drew and the horrible way he treats Diane (not that she doesn't keep coming back for more) because CBS has already introduced us to Jase and Scott, the House Bullies. Drew is the Nice Guy (in comparison). We don't get to see much of the idiocy that is Drew because CBS already had Cowboy playing the role of Stupid - and we can't have more than one Stupid in the house at a time. Certainly, each HG can do a lot to distance him/herself from the role that CBS wants them to play (Nakomis is a "Freak" with friends rather than an outcast and a loner - well, at least until last night), but none of them have any control over the editing and how they ultimately get presented to the American public. Honestly, I didn't like Jase much when he was in the house and we only saw the footage CBS aired on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but during his eviction interview I finally saw him as a real person who might have some redeeming qualities, rather than simply as the Bully. That was because Jase spoke for himself at that time; it wasn't CBS putting together a bunch of fottage to tell the story they wanted us to see.

Hi,

While I agree with you about CBS' editing of the stuff. The live feeds and those who watch them and put transcripts up for the rest of us (thanks to all of you guys), do give us the extra info.

That is one reason we know that Dr is not the "saint" he is protrayed to be by CBS and we know that Will was conspiring to get rid of twins long before A put him up on block. These things do come through despite CBS' best (worst?) effort.

I pointed out on another one of these comments that I would find the house much more interesting if it had a broader spectrum of society represented. For instance, there are a good number of us baby-boomers out here (those over 50 now) and rarely do we see anyone over 35 on BB.

The "average" dress size for women is 12/14. That means that half of the female population is over that. I would bet that even A/N (who were judged as "heavy" this year) and Jun from last year did not come close to 12/14. Let alone have someone over that size on board.

I personally get tired of HGs and commentators on these sites referring to A/N and Jun's weight when I see them as below the average. I think that that buys into CBS' protrayals of people and encourages them to continue to select those who are stereotypes.

I think the fact that Nokomis "rose above" the selected role of "freak" shows that even if CBS does the editing, the HG can overcome it (albeit with a lot of effort). It is one of the things I admire about N.

Absolutely! I completely agree!

The only clarification that I would make is to point out that those of us who follow the live feeds are more fanatical than I imagine the average viewer to be, so we get to make more informed decisions. I watch BB5 with a group of friends who do not follow the feeds or read any of the discussions in forums such as this one. Only in the last week have I shared my "secret" feed and forum info with them, and they were shocked by what I had to report.

So, yes, I agree that a careful viewer can draw conclusions much different than those CBS wants us to draw - but many viewers do not have the time or make the effort with the live feeds, so they only work with part of the information available.

Sorry to get so wordy with my clarification. All I really wanted to do was tell you that I wholeheartedly agree with the points you made.

Who said a crossdresser must be male? That was simply my preference.

Your history of clothing actually has nothing to do with crossdressing though. Women wear pants, for the most part, that are designed for women. Making them women'sclothes. A woman in a woman's pair of pants does not a crossdresser make.

My comment about good history books also had nothing to do with you. I don't know you. I simply can't imagine a good book on the history of clothing. Please don't make my comment about you. Like I said, I don't know you.

Yes, IMO, a male crossdresser on the show would be hilarious, tittilating, disgusting, etc. The last adjective was yours, not mine. But I agree.

I agree we should get back to the topic. Which my post was. It was about what kind of people I'd like to see on the show.

Hi Cookie! I understand the distinction that you are making about women's clothing being manufactured specifically for women so the woman who wears a pair of women's pants is not technically a crossdresser. (When I was in college, women wearing guy's boxers was en vogue for a while though. Kinda makes you raise your eyebrows...) But I think that you missed the point that I was making: in the mid-nineteenth century when some women wore pants they WERE considered crossdressers because they had adopted an article of clothing that was considered exclusively a male domain. Now, 150 years later, we don't think anything about it. That was my point, that things that were considered scandalous then are not now, suggesting that we have established a new code of fashion for women but have not been as "liberal" (for lack of another word) in doing the same for men. Having a crossdresser on reality television might cause us to think about such issues, including gender roles as they relate to fashion.

I'm sorry that I was not able to convince you that there are good history books about clothing. (I thought a Harvard professor with a Pulitzer prize would sell just about anyone!) Let me assure you though, that many historians and specialists in material culture do their Ph.D. work on the history of clothing and eventually have their dissertations published as books. Apparently the American university system (as well as a great many publishers) find their work worthy and acceptable. It's also interesting that their ideas get transmitted through means other than books. For instance, when I was at the Old Barracks Museum in Dublin two years ago, they had a great exhibit on clothing spanning 150 years. Visitors were able to see how styles had changed and learn about the social concerns that caused them to change. Consider women's undergarments today compared to what women wore 120 years ago. Most women today do not wear corsets or layers and layers of petticoats - in part because women's role in modern society is much different than their role 120 years ago. And just imagine how the invention of the bicycle influenced women's fashion!

Anyway, the reason that I took offense when you stated that you could not imagine a good book on the history of clothing is because you followed it up with "LMAO." I realize that I am relatively new to these forums, but it has been my impression that this is a phrase that we use when somebody tells a joke or makes a witty remark. I don't usually see it in posts commenting on another person's opinions or ideas. I think that if we start to say "LMAO" when we are commenting on other people's ideas that we belittle them and move away from having a civil and respectful discussion. Saying "LMAO" in response to somebody's opinion seems to have the same effect as the forbidden "Shut up" (IMO).

- edited to change some language in the first paragraph to more forcefully agree with one of Cookie's points because I really do understand the distinction she is making

Unfortunatey the motto on the top of the board containing the "shut up" policy is only for some posters. Others have been singled out and told to do just that, shut up. Hypocricy at it's finest. Or worst I should say. Sad, by typical.

Anyway, fashion really has nothing to do with crossdressing. Yes, fashions are used in the crossdressing. But you aren't crossdressing based solely on the fashions you choose. Those women who dared to wear pants were probably just trying to be comfortable. Real crossdressing is diliberate, from the psyche. It has nothing to do with wanting to keep cool, or wanting to keep modest by covering your legs separatly with pants. I know you know that though.

Now what was the original topic? Oh, yeah, Marvin.

Hi Cookie! I'm sorry if you feel as though some people are allowed to speak their mind and others are not.

I still have to disagree with you about fashion and crossdressing. I think that you are defining "fashion" too narrowly when looking at it only as items of clothing. I am talking about concepts of fashion and how they relate to the construction of personal identity. I am trying to make a subtle and sophisticated argument about their relationship.

"I know that you know that though."

Honestly, Cookie, I am not trying to be difficult on purpose or to egg you on. I really do have a different point of view on this issue and I'm not trying to drag it out just for the sake of argument. I cannot say that I "know that" because I really do take a different point of view.

Plus, I believe that I am justified in taking that point of view, in part because I am only building on a foundation of scholars who have already examined these issues. Some of them come up with conclusions quite different from yours; others come up with conclusions different than mine. I recognize that there is more than one school of thought out there, but rather than deny that any opinion other than my own exists or has validity, I instead choose to simply recognize where my arguments fit into the larger universe of people talking about these subjects.

How do I know that there is more than one school of thought on this issue? Well, I have degrees in History (with an emphasis on Gender Studies) from the University of Michigan, the American University (Washington, DC), and Johns Hopkins University. Perhaps the curriculum where you went to college included different reading assignments, lecture materials, and research projects than at my colleges. I am sure that if they did, your professors were also good enough scholars to point out that they offered ONE particular interpretation, BUT that there are many other interpretations out there that are also respected, not negated just because they happened to disagree or take a different worldview.

I'm just not willing to call any woman who wears pants or any man who wears a pink robe after his shower a crossdresser. Like I said, a woman in pants does not a crossdresser make. I'm talking about genuine crossdressers, those who specifically go out of their way to dress like and appear as though they are of the opposite sex. It's a condition of the psyche, a lifestyle. To say it's simply about fashion excludes the entire mindset of crossdressing. I had a very good friend once who was a crossdresser. He crossdressed because he was a crossdresser, not because WalMart had a good sale on skirts that day.

OK, Cookie! I think that we'll just have to agree to disagree. I can see where you are coming from and you have valid points. I just happen to define the terms a little differently, so I hope that you'll respect my right to take a different view based on my own experiences. You're very much interested in the psychology that explains current events (which I can appreciate), while I am more interested in looking at changing attitudes and behaviors as historical time progresses. In a sense, we're not even having the same discussion because we weren't even on the same page when we began. I think that is why we have been talking past each other and misunderstanding each other.

Anyway, there's a lot of interesting stuff in this thread about (1) the depiction of African Americans in reality television, (2) the stereotyping of various types of people by race, gender, or sexual orientation in reality television, (3) casting done based on beauty and age and how subjective it can be, (4) the interaction between reality television and social and cultural issues experienced in the real world, and (5) a whole bunch of other issues. I see that you've interjected some (witty) remarks, some of them possibly containing a certain amount of sarcasm to make your point. I hope that you'll continue to engage in these debates.

I guess, in particular, since this is the topic that interests me most, that I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about how reality television affects the real world and vice versa (Is that really an artificial environment in the BB5 house, or do real life issues play a role? How much of it is reveals the truth about important issues and how much is just a fictional depiction that has no application to real life?), though I'd be willing to read anything you have to say about Marvin and all the rest in this thread (as long as I'm still allowed to respectfully disagree once in a while). I'd also be curious to know about your good friend who was a crossdresser and what kind of effect you think being on a reality show might have on his life - both while on television and afterwards.

Thanks for such a spirited debate and helping me to look at these various issues from more than one point of view. I hope that I have managed to throw out some food for thought as well...

My friend would NEVER admit his crossdressing on TV. He used to live in fear of backing out of his driveway fully made up and have a friend or family member pull in unexpectedly behind him. There would be no direct effect except for whatever effect keeping such a secret itself would be.

I have no idea how reality TV effects the real world. Does it? The only way I can think is that the viewer may find a person to relate to among the castmembers. The viewer may for the first time ever see a person just like them or in similar situations as they are and be effected for the better. Cheap therapy.

The environments are definately artifical. At least from our modern cultural standpoint. Barring the voryerism part an environment void of single person stimuli such as TV, computers, reading material, etc. may shed an even more real light on the environment. Meaning that people have to actually interact with each other like we did in the olden days before mind numbing isolation activities. It depends on which angle you prefer whether or not it's more or less artifical.

The other questions I can't wrap my brain around right now : )I do think there are two camps that players fall in. The "it's JUST strategy. Whatever it takes to win" camp, and the "how I play is a direct reflection of my morals and I can not lie and I will hold it against anyone who lies to me" camp.

Yeah, an all-black cast would be interesting, but this is CBS, not UPN or The WB. Sarcasm aside, I think that we don't see more black reality show contestants because the networks want to cast people who most closely resemble certain target demographics. By doing so, they can keep their advertising revenue up. It seems to be a financial decision all about attracting the most viewers who are likely to be the best consumers - and you don't want to alienate them too much by exposing them to too many people who are different from them and might actually challenge the way that they look at the world.

Noble didn't you know that it's ok for Ayak to be intolerant of your views? Just not the other way around.

Yeah, and if you say something non-PC regarding race or sexual orientation, then, contrary to the motto written at the top of the page, then it is ok to tell someone to shut up and even silence them.

Ayak, removing Noble's post is very intolerant of you. See the catch 22 you're in. You've placed yourself in quite a little quanry. Hmm...

Non-PC is one thing. I say lots of non-PC things myself. But the moderators of this site, including myself, will not permit people to advocate hatred on the basis of race or religion on this site. Why? Because we've been through those debates. Lots of people get mad, many of them say silly things, and some of them end up leaving or getting banned. No one is happy in the end. It's in the best interests of the site to prevent that.

If you want to argue that blacks or gays are inferior or a cabal of Jews run the world, find a site that permits it. We don't. Remember, membership in this site is a privilege, not a right; unrestricted free speech applies on streetcorners but not here.

And just so that you don't end up like the late, unlamented Noble Crusader, I refer you to this provision in the site guidelines:

XIII. RESPECT THE MODERATORS, THEIR ROLE, AND THEIR DECISIONS

Please remember that moderators are people too -- people who generously volunteer THEIR TIME to manage a community FOR YOUR USE. They also have personal lives and feelings. While they are very generous in volunteering their time, do not presume that a moderator will always be immediately available to respond to your issue. Do not take a lack of response or action on their part as grounds to take you own "vigilante moderation" action. "Vigilante moderation" will not be tolerated and will possibly result in the termination of your RealityTVWorld.com membership. While disagreeing with the actions or decision of the moderator team is permitted, respecting their decision is required and repeated open questioning or badgering of their decision is not permitted.

Oh yeah, it could totally happen.

Danielle came really close, but was burned by her Diary Room comments. Even Marcellas that season made it far.

Also, in BB2, Monica made the Final 3 and would have won the game, had Nicole not been threatened by her.

I think Marvin could win this season, if he plays his cards just right. If he can keep convincing people that there are bigger threats out there than him, he'll stay.

I may be naive here (if it's possible at my age), but I think that the hg's have been living so closely to each other that they've stopped seeing each other from the outside. As much as I like Will, I thought he was way off base when he said that Adria put up the two minorities. After being nose-to-nose with each other for weeks, I think their dislikes and likes go far deeper than any pre-existing prejudices. We, watching from the outside, still notice these differences.

Having said that, I think Marvin may very well make it to the last two, but I think he brings out strong emotions in the other players, which would keep him from the final vote. Someone like Nakomis, who seems to be generally liked, would have a better chance in the end, if it came down to the two of them.

Maybe Adria wants to be around straight White people. Let's cut Adria some slack. The twins are a couple of beautiful, White, Christian women.

I agree with you, DMC, that the houseguests see each other as individuals and vote that way. However, I think it is still possible for them to bring in baggage from outside the game and have it affect the decisions they make; even if it is not the primary reason that they make a decision, it could still be in the back of their mind somewhere. I think that Adria nominated Will as a strategic move (though it was a poor decision because we see where it got her). Some people might wonder, however, since she is a Christian from the South, if she felt some uneasiness toward Will. I won't put words in her mouth and (as a Christian from the North) I won't say that all Christians from the South think exactly the same way, but I will observe that official church doctrine for many Southern Protestant denominations is not friendly toward gay people - and there is a reason that the Bush campaign wants to mobilize Southern Christians to vote.

To connect this back to the topic of BB5, I think that Adria made a strategic decision but (like any other HG) she brings her worldview from outside the house into the game and it has the potential to influence her thinking.

Will being gay would have nothing to do with my vote, as a christian. If he's not a christian, I wouldn't expect him to act like one. What about Karen living together out of wedlock with Larry for so long before marrying him? There's no difference to me. Adria didn't seem to be bothered by that. Cowboy too. This is a game. It doesn't have anything to do with peoples laundry list of sins.

Anyone left in the house could possibly win.
Whether you get to the end has very little to do with the color of ones skin, Marvin is more likely to be voted off for his dirty language or to further someone else's plan.

I am sure there is a possibilty that a black person would win BB. But I think the numbers are off for that to happen. One black person among 12 white, the odds arent there for it.
As for a black person winning Survivor, remember Vecepia did just that.
Canadians cannot do BB, the houseguests are there for 3 months, its considered a "job' as there is money involved, and they won't grant a working visa for this, I know, I tried!

BTW, this is my first post ever after 5 years of reading these boards, and I wanted to thank whoever is in charge of the updates etc, for BB and Survivor, and TAR, I've not always been able to watch, and never feel like I miss anything thanks to all your efforts!

I have noticed more Ageism and Beautyism from CBS, more so than a racial aspect. They have gotten away from the 'relaity' part of it by not having players that are of a mix of ages, and the bodies keep getting younger and smaller by the season.
Being from Oakland, Calif., we are the blended shake of people and cultures... and I miss seeing that represented in the BB house as well as Survivor. Apparently on the new Survivor cast the oldest cast memeber is in their 40's. One or two in the 30's, and the rest are 20 somethings. Yuck!

I'll be honest, I'd rather see a sexy babe like Lori, or a cute honey like Michelle as opposed to a fat cow like Jun or an ugly slut like Amanda (she was the ONLY woman to have sex on this show) What can I say, I just prefer beauty.

Since YOU brought it up.

Lori and Michelle have fine facial features, thick natural brown and blonde hair, are between 5'2 and 5'8, and have well porportioned bodies. As a general rule, young White White women have nice facial features, are between 5'0 and 5'10 and have well porpotioned bodies. Just like Michelle and Lori.

Amanda has some ugly facial features. Her body was super thin and out of porportion. Jun facial features consist of a flat nose and round face. She does nothing for me. Jun was fat and not well porportioned.

As a general rule Asian women are short and thin. Jun certainly wasn't thin, but her facial features are very typical of an Asian. Amanda's facial features are typical of a Black/Indian mix.

Of course there are pretty non-white women and ugly White women. However, I find a higher percentage of attractive White women as opposed to non-white women. This is just a GENERAL rule. It's my subjective opinion. I'm a White man so naturally I favor my own people. If your not White, don't get all tighed up in knots over this.

________ummmm who's general rule may I ask???

________I am white, and I natually favor people....all people....were are all pink (or blue) on the inside....

IMHO I thought that Amanda was very pretty, she had great features....and Lori's nose is too big...

the only problem that I have with BB, is I would like to a more diverse class of people.....not just people that you normally would not see expect to talk outside of the house, but a nice round of real people who are not just star crazy or aleady some type of celebrity.....no wanna be actors, or champions of something...just normal people.....the ages could start at 21 as long as they do not stay at 21......too many youngun's on here......

I welcomed you farther down on the tread...but once again welcome to the boards....

The producers think that these "wannabe actors" tend to be more colorful and thus make better TV. Everyday people can be just as interesting. I see your point.

Hi Syren - I don't think everyday people would even be remotely interested in isolating themselves from their friends and family in order to have every aspect of their lives displayed across the tv screen. The loss of privacy, coupled with loss of the ability to come and go as you please would be too much for many of us "normal" folks.

Maybe the promise of $500,000 would make a difference to some, but not for me. Ok - go on and say it, "But okaychatt - whoever said you were normal?"

I think the nature of the reality tv beast dictates actors and champions of something.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Oscirus

Take no offense of this thread. Most of the 'racist' comments are simply over the top statements to a silly subject thread. Humor through exaggeration.

The creator of this thread asked "Would an African American EVER win Big Brother?" It's kind of like saying, with the Red Sox EVER win the World Series? You simply can't answer NO to this since "EVER" is infinite.

A better discussion topic would be:

"Is the deck stacked against an African-American (or insert favorite minority here) given the inherent design of the Big Brother game? Why or why not?"

Would never win Big Brother. He's too damn cute.

It hasn't happened yet on BB. Nor has it happened on Survivor. I'm starting to notice a disturbing trend with CBS.

I think Scott and Jace are cool. The fact that Scott and Jace are aplha males who are confident, whitty, tough, and handsome, make them a positive reflection upon straight white males. The same way that Marvin is a positive reflection upon African American Males.

As a straight White male, I was pulling for Scott and Jace. Now I'm pulling for Drew. Besides, the Blacks were pulling for Marvin, and the gays were pulling for Will. I'm no different from them.

Now on to my thought....

"I think Scott and Jace are cool. The fact that Scott and Jace are aplha males who are confident, whitty, tough, and handsome, make them a positive reflection upon straight white males."

_________Have to disagree here....anyone who urinates on someones elses belongings is not a positive reflection of anyone. IMHO neither scott nor Jase were handsome......Scott looked way older than his age, and from what I saw with his playboy pics and his I am so sexy attitude, these things were deffinetly making up for attributes that he lacked elsewhere. Jase's body was the weirdest that I have ever seen, on the feeds he was shown lifting without a shirt and his waist is smaller than an average woman's while his shoulders stretched forever, kinda looked disgusting. His hair.....whoa...someone needs to tell him that only porcuines are supposed to have quills. Unless your name is Sonic the hedgehog.

"As a straight White male, I was pulling for Scott and Jace. Now I'm pulling for Drew. Besides, the Blacks were pulling for Marvin, and the gays were pulling for Will. I'm no different from them."

________________Jase and Scott were idiots....they are the type who picked on everyone in school less fortunate just to make themselves feel better.
_______Drew is in the pocket of Diane, as long as she keeps tugging on the man in the pants, he will pretty much do what she wants him to do. IMHO the only reason that he is still in the house is by luck, and a little hand manuvering of his own.

___________I am not black nor am I gay, however I was pulling for Marvin and Will.....I liked their "characters". I also like Karen and Nik, but not because I am a straight white woman, or the farrah faucet hair she cuts herself or because I have tattos....but because I like the way that each one is playing their part in this game.......

OK, So Scott and Jace are not perfect. Who among us is? I have my own faults as well. Whether or not they are atttractive is purely subjective. I'm sure you'll agree that Scott and Jace are not wimps, I'm I right? Both these guys are smart. Both these guys have a lot of confidence. I thought women were suppose to like confident men?

Marvin is a lot like Scott and Jace. Marvin is a big guy (not a wimp) He is very confident and smart. Like Scott and Jace Marvin can be a bully at times.

When comparing Scott and Jace to Marvin, the only real difference is that Scott and Jace are White, and Marvin is Black. Marvin is just the Black version of Scott and Jace.

>________________Jase and Scott were idiots....they are
>the type who picked on

Marvin picked on Adria and Cowboy like a scholl yard bully. Marvin is an intimadating person the way he hits on the ladies all the time. It borders on sexual harrassmment.

Marvins the same as Scott and Jace. Will was such a sore loser. Scott and Jace took their lose like men.

Nakomis has played a great game and deserves to win.

Cowboy has got as far as he has by not being a threat. That's not the way you should win. In spite of Cowboy being a straight White male (who's a hell of a nice guy) I don't really think he deserves to win. How's that for objectivity?

"When comparing Scott and Jace to Marvin, the only real difference is that Scott and Jace are White, and Marvin is Black. Marvin is just the Black version of Scott and Jace."

_______That is not the only real difference, two were jerks who liked to disrespect others by urinating on their stuff..they were not confident, most confident people do not feel like they have to act and be mean for people to like them...and yes I do like confiedent people, those two I would not classify as confident. They were not witty, they were ignorant. Nor in my mind strong, just because you have a muscular build doesn't mean that you are strong..most of the time strength comes from the inside and determination.

Marvin picked on Adria and Cowboy like a scholl yard bully. Marvin is an intimadating person the way he hits on the ladies all the time. It borders on sexual harrassmment.

______I don't see marvin as intimidating the women for hitting on them, most of the time they are right there with him playing along, that to me is not even close to sexual harrassment. Lori actually did tell him not in a million years and he then pretty much left her alone. yes he still says things about how hot she was (or he did till he got voted out), but most guys will talk about someone being hot, and vice versa. Marvin played along with CB, and eveyone picks on CB no matter how sublte, however he allows it and gows with it. Marvin and Adria was something all together different, he was upset over the pity me I am a lamb of god who has it so hard story, and he told her that is not being a school yard bully, it is being honest.

I agree that Marvin wasn't a bully, at least not in the same way that Jase and Scott were. The two of them ganged up on others and "terrorized" the house. They actively picked on people and INTENTIONALLY tried to intimidate others. You can lock me in the house with Marvin for a month rather than Jase and Scott for a week.

WOW Good for Lori! She's White and does not want to date a man who's Black. It's good to see that Lori is not completely brainwashed by MTV. (MTV encourages White women to lust after Black men)

The reason why Marvin gave up right away is because deep down he knows it is wrong for him to lust after White women.

Considering the fact that there was no Black women in the house. You're locked up there 24/7 with nothing to do except interact with the people around you. Including a drop dead gorgeous woman of another race. I understand the unusual situation. I forgive Marvin. He seems like a nice guy.

"Besides, the Blacks were pulling for Marvin, and the gays were pulling for Will."

Really? What was the sample size for reaching these conclusions? When did you conduct the poll? I happen to be gay (gasp!) and I don't remember my phone ringing or telling you that I wanted Will to win. Sure, I liked Will - as a person and as an entertainer - not because we both happen to be gay. I would have been fine with Karen, Nakomis, Marvin, or Will winning in the end. In fact, I liked Karen the best. Maybe that's because I'm secretly one of those confused gay guys (we all are, you know) who really wants to be with a woman if only I could just get one - but I think that it has more to do with the fact that I liked the way that Karen played the game. She made friends with everybody, empathized with them when things went badly, always walked the evicted HG to the door even if she was the puppetmaster who orchestrated their eviction. (Yeah, CBS depicts Nakomis as the brains of the operation, but the live feeds strongly suggest that Karen is the one doing her homework and running everything from behind the curtain.)

As for Scott and Jase, I'll agree with you that they are confident and tough. Witty? No, not really. Handsome? Not at all (and certainly not as attractive as they seemed to think they are) - and you have to remember that because I'm gay that means that I am always attracted to ALL straight men, so what does that tell you if even this f@gg*t doesn't find them attractive? I'll defer to some of syren's comments about them being bullies (and Scott's embarrassing pencil d!ck in the Playgirl spread). I don't think that any of the straight white males in there make a "positive reflection upon straight white males," with the possible exception of Mike, the first guy evicted, who we did not get to know at all. (I don't care much for Mike's politics, but I certainly respected him as a person, especially after he and Will sat down and engaged in a respectful dialogue about their different world views.)

I'm also curious whay you're not pulling for Drew AND COWBOY. They are BOTH straight white males. Does leaving out Cowboy somehow suggest that maybe personality and other characterisitcs play a role in a decision of who to support rather than just cheering on somebody who happens to be straight and white and male? If not, that seems like a rather narrow view to take of the world.

The fact that you and Will are both gay may not be the ONLY factor. However I'd bet the farm that him being gay does fit into the equasion as to why you like him and were pulling for him.

I'm pulling for Drew. Some of that is based on the fact he's a straight White male, that's NOT the only factor. It does fit into the equasion.

As for Cowboy, I'm NOT cheering for him to win. He has just NOT done enough to deserve it.

OK, maybe the fact that Will and I are both gay played a role in my appreciation of him as a BB5 cast member. That does not mean, however, that Will is the only HG that I have cheered, nor the HG that I most wanted to win the game.

Nor does having a gay guy on a reality show automatically make me feel some sort of appreciation for him. That little twerp on Amish in the City? I couldn't stand him the few times I saw portions of that show. Brandon from Survivor Africa? I would have voted his lazy a$$ out at the first tribal council. Richard Hatch? I respect him for coming up with the alliance strategy that has shaped reality television ever since, but I wouldn't want to spend any time with him, especially after seeing him on All Stars.

edited to add: after seeing him on All Stars, which I didn't want to see him win at all. (I still think Kathy got screwed over in the Marquesas so I had high hopes of her winning All Stars, but it was her own fault - well, Lex even more - how things went down on All Stars. Damn them both for allowing Romber to assault our good senses until the bitter end!)

personally, i am as gay as can be...and i didn't like Survivor: Africa's Brandon Quinton at ALL, nor was I a fan of Marcellas on BB3. As for this season of BB, i (like HistoryDetective) liked Will...but i have been rooting for Karen and Nak all along.

the sexual orientation of a player has pretty much nothing to do with whether or not i am rooting for them. i can only speak for myself, of course. but i for one, don't appreciate the fact that most of the gay men they pick for reality shows (except Hatch, of course) borderline on stereotypical.

Good point Uber, about RTV players who happen to be gay generally being the stereotypical "gay" guy. That's why I was pleasantly surprised to see a very atypical, yet not uncommon, gay man on the new Road Rules. Not only is he black and gorgeous, but noone could question that he is very masculine and IMHO, well ...he's quite HOT! And we are glad to have you here, so do come back!

Well considering Marvin made it to the top 5 out of 14 one would think those odds were much better than the players knocked out recieved. I personally was rooting for Marvin or Diane to take it to the final two right from the beginning. I think African American has nothing to do with it. Marvin was spunky and very cool to watch. Just the same as Diane. I think that is what makes them so interesting.

Actually I think a black person of any nationality, American or otherwise, could win. I also think an African American with white skin could win. Skin color is neither here nor there. I think the American part would be more of an issue. I think a non-American in the game would be ousted simply because it's an American version on American TV and I'm sure the HG would want and American citizen to win.

Fortunately, we don't needs to worry about the politics of xenophobia rearing its ugly head amongst the HGs as they vote: federal immigration and labor laws prevent non-Americans from participating in Big Brother because of the length of time involved and the monetary rewards which (according to the laws) make it a job. Non-Americans cannot get visas to participate. I know I have seen several Canadians in the forum lament that they cannot apply to be involved.

(Of course, I don't know how the laws affect greencard holders. Still, if a non-American with a greencard were allowed to participate, I think that each HG would base his/her decision on whether or not that person should win based on his/her own experiences. I went to grad school with a lot of non-Americans and I wouldn't mind seeing any of them win a lot of money to pay off bills and support their spouses and children. After all, while they're here in the U.S. and earning a paycheck, they are also paying taxes to Uncle Sam...)
