~If Only Life Were That Simple Again~Ice crystals formed in my nostrils and then just as quickly disappeared as my labored breathe melted them away and left a trail of wet slime on my upper lip. My tongue darted out of my mouth and skillfully slurped the slime until it was decidedly not a distraction to me anymore. I continued lifting the heavy snow with my shovel, the white powder belying its true backbreaking capability. I paused for a moment and looked out over the trees to the valley below and a winding river partially obscured by drifts that must have been twelve feet deep. The air was clean due to the large population of coniferous trees, firs with their branches heavily burdened by ice, sagging under the weight. I inhaled deeply and the scent of pine mixed with freshly fallen snow brought me back to the days when I was a kid at my Grand Dad’s house. He used to make us hot cocoa on a day like today. We would work our butts off all day, my brother Jamie and me, and then we’d sit by the fire and warm ourselves. Then Pops would tell stories and jokes and we would laugh until our stomachs were about to cave in from the cramped pain. It made me realize only too well how simple things were back then. No wives or kids, no stressful business partnership with a lying cheat that leaves you on the verge of suicide. I smiled if only for a moment it was nice to be swept away by memories of youth and leave behind the harsh reality of the present. But then I looked down at the shovel and realized I had better get back to my work. The sun was starting to fade in the distance, casting tall pointed shadows across the crusty white surface that blanketed the earth. Three more big sweeping scoops and some patting with the back of the blade and I was finished. My boots clacked across the gravel driveway, I pulled my wet glove off my left hand and opened the door of my red SUV and climbed inside. Looking in the rear view mirror for a brief second I hesitated and wondered how long it would take for them to find the body. Would it be spring when a fisherman wandered up the hill from the river? Or maybe summertime when two young lovers looking for a quiet respite from the rest of the world strayed a bit too close to the decay and stench? It could also take until next deer season when a hunter stumbled across it. Who knows? I do know one thing; I will be as far away from here as is humanly possible.
