Caps 17-19 I believe is Julie Berry, and she is not first across, as the beam is very muddy already. I saw her in action on the promo, and she was very slow and cautious, and another teammate is immediately right behind her, though I couldn't see who it was.Who's the guy in 20-22? The beam looks clean, and is he grinning or grimacing? He has blue or purple shorts on, could he be one of the same guys that are in front at the start of the challenge? This may be a leader type of guy...

The first episode is scheduled to be one hour, I believe, so I'd expect one mega-challenge, as usual. And look how filthy the people on the balance beam are. This probably comes at some point after the crawl segment in the same challenge.

I'm just not sure I see the upside to telling the world it's men vs. women and then changing to mixed gender tribes sometime even before the first eviction. Wouldn't a "pick'em" strategy be just as much a recycling of Survivor: Thailand as a men/women strategy would be a recycling of Survivor: Amazon? Does it make a difference if you are recycling an idea from 18 months ago or one from 24 months ago? -SB

It also does appear that they are separated into tribes by gender to me as well. Men being the red tribe and the ladies being the yellow tribe.

Y'all did such a great job last season, that I had to sign up and join in this season!!!Anyway, here's my thoughts on the challenge. It's your typical obstacle course type layout. I think all 3 of the caps showing the red beam/platform are of the same thing. It appears that there could be several beams that are connected at the top/end. As for the struggling thing, maybe they can only use one hand? Both men are seen using 1 hand and it appears they're pulling themselves up. The woman has both on the board, but it could be her sitting herself down before actually starting. Could also be that they are carrying something w/ the other hand so they can't use it. Any thoughts on that? Kimber

vols, I believe John P and Travis are in the same place in these caps: The perspective in the cap of John P makes it look like the front crosspiece isn't as wide. But you can see the same piece of twine or whatever that is covering the left (to them) edge of it. The black across the bottom of the Travis cap is part of the graphic.

Thanks for the welcome!The only reason I thought they were the same is because of the red ribbon or whatever wrapped around the end. Obviously it's 2 different camera angles, but if you look at the Bubba pics, you can see that same red ribbon on the far right. I'm thinking maybe the yellow team has 1 beam and the red team has 1 beam and maybe they each have to carry something across it.

Looks like Brook in frame 6 and 7 is pulling himself up onto a platform, probably at the beginning of the balance beam. Julie in frame 19 can be seen scooting along the beam with both hands on top and the beam appears to be (from her grip) only 3" wide. That would be tough to walk across; especially if a fall means your team has to start over.The depth of the balance beam may be as much as 24 inches (to provide enough strength to hold several tribe members at once), and that might explain the location of the men's second arms. They are hugging the entire beam. As for John P, it looks like he has reached the end of the beam and his head is near the landing platform. The red fabric in front of his left shoulder may be padding that had been placed on a corner that would otherwise be quite sharp (should someone brave enough to walk the beam fall and strike it). Frames 20,21 and 22 show no progress being made by John P (see the tree trunk in the background). I would not be surprised to find out on September 16th that frames 20, 21 and 22 have been reversed in order to give us the impression that he is tired but fighting onward. I suspect the truth here is that his head on the beam is a gesture that the race has ended and the men have lost. Caveman

3 I don't like the position change of his right arm from cap 1 to cap 2 in this version. Since he's reaching for, or has reached, the endpiece in cap 1, the drop of his arm seems a little too extreme for someone who was straining so hard a second ago or so. Unless his hand abruptly slipped. And I don't think he'd collapse on the beam if they'd just lost, he'd probably pull himself off first. Now here's the sequence as shown in the promo: 1

3 It's possible that he's shimmying forward hugging the beam, with his head downward for a second in cap 1, and then strains upward in cap 2 and forward to reach the endpiece.

In Amazon they couldn't move forward until everyone finished. We had similar caps of the rest of the men waiting for Ryan and Daniel to get off the beam. Maybe the beam screws the men up this time as well. But there must be other components to the challenge.Actually, now I'm not sure who's in these caps, except for Rory. I think the guy in front with dark hair is John K, but the guy on the far right might not be Chris since it doesn't look like he has his buff on his head.

ETA: I blew it up to 2400 resolution and it definitely looks a lot more like a statuette or something like that put on top of the wooden thing than like a human being. Oh well, it was worth a shot to see if it was definitively a person standing in the background.

It looks like there are 6 men already across: Brady(?), Brook, John K., Rory, Chris, and what looks like Chad's bald head in the background. That would leave John P., Lea, and Travis still to have to make it across. The reason I think that's it is that the women's side of the caps shows the starting side of the beam, where Dolly and 2 others are waiting for Lisa to get across before they can go. There's probably something waiting for them on the other side of the beam, but they have to have all tribe members before they can move on (just like Amazon). Thus the yelling.  Fester

True enough, pepe, and we know that the evil MB likes to get his bootees exercising to try to mess up our weight loss spoilers...Still, losing that beer gut is gonna take some hard work, and/or starvation. I think travis would have a hard time losing it when every three days a starving survivor stumbles in and stuffs himself with bacon. But you're point has merit... I guess we'll see. I think we have come to a consensus that the boys are gonna lose this first challenge, and it seems that Travis may have screwed it up for them. But remember, in S5, Ghandia screwed up the first challenge but wasn't booted for WEEKS. MM hehehe, ghandia.

in relation to jazzy's post (post #18), i think what john k. and chris are holding in this cap....
.... is actually the second part of the relay. In this picture: 
you can see a box-like figure (to the left of the guy with the red shirt and cap) placed on top of a pole. this could be similar to the challenge previously done in marquesas where they have to tilt the box in different directions to get a coconut from one point of the box to another point. or it could also be a puzzle of some sorts. what do you say guys? (thanks to survivorfever for the caps...)

There is more to this challenge than I originally thought! And what is going on in the first three pics? Looks like a bungee type jump. Caps 4 and 5 are what appear to me as Jiffy describing the balance beam because I think Jiffy can be seen in cap 5!

Vols FanYou're right about the women in this picture. I'll be anxious to see where this took place in respect to the end of the challenge. They may just be listening intently to Jeff describing what they have won. This challenge course could go down in history as the most detailed yet, but I seriously doubt any vine jumping will take place among the Survivors in Vanuatu. Local women are prohibited from vine jumping and even if MB considered a safer 'bungie jump,' I doubt they would want to disrespect the locals by making a mockery of their test of courage. Caveman

So, I wasn't for sure if it was part of the idol or not. I thought it could be a camera! ETA: Here is a cap of the II and if that is the II...it is the top back portion (IMHO)

That is not a survivor jumping IOW. The practise of vine-jumping is only "won" by the tribesmen who actually hit the ground.
This is a very dangerous "stunt" for anyone to do.
The Survivorinsurance alone on a challenge of this high-mortality/paralyzing/coma inducing rate would be astronomical.
It however, would be a way to get rid of (at least) 2 extra tribemates, in 39 days, without the extra TC's. teehee. Although JP just mentioned that the TC's would happen whenever.

The challenge appears to be a couple of thingsMud Challenge obstacle
 Puzzle
Beams of some sort
 and then as per usual race to light the fire is life scenario. The order is not necessarily correct but since we see the start of them diving in the obstacles with the mud we can presume that is first, the puzzle may be an equalizer so to speak and the walking beams could be near the end with the running to light their fire. These are what I can see for right now in this challenge. Also, in the earlier muddy happy picture, there may be what could conceivably be the idol. If you look at the tree, we may have an image of the idol blended into the bark that is being held by the smiling lady back right; her hand could possibly be holding it. Not saying this is definitive but there has been notable blowups and such at SS and in looking at same, I could give it a nod that the idol is being held in the back.

From the combination of defeated looks on the guys (ie: John P. with head on beam with body language that screams loss) not to mention the body language and looks on their faces at some of the camp shots as though they are strategizing the first boot, plus the pics of the gals smiling and the II by the tree behind them...I truly think Yasur wins this monster challenge.Now, as for the first male boot, I am leaning toward the useless pretty boy John K.

So, do you think this is a scene from the opening sequence?It could be. But, it doesn't have to be. I believe it's relevance in the game is nothing more than a curiosity.
It may be witnessed by an RC winning tribe. But, under no circumstance, should be considered a portion of the "game".
I definitely do not see any variation of the ritual being used as a challenge for the tribemates. If they do show it in the Opening Sequence it would be considered a "nature shot", one to get the audience in the mood for S9, like shots of erupting volcanoes. Or other Nivanuatu "rituals". I like the man slave idea. Sign me up! As for the first boot, I just have a feeling that John K and Brady are tight and that if the men lost this pretty physical challenge they are going to take out their weakest physical link. Their first reaction in a loss to the women will be to carve out the guy who does not fit their self image. If the tribe has an overweight guy who didn't compete well and maybe isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.....Caveman
