"Editing Thoughts for S9" |
LAST EDITED ON 08-30-04 AT 08:42 PM (EST)I thought I'd take a moment to see if we can use what we've learned from past Survivors to figure out some things that might be apt to happen this time around. For one thing, anyone remember the last time we had a male-vs-female start in S6? I recall there was a fair amount of bragging going on with the guys in the previews/first episode (especially with the likes of Ryan and Daniel) about how they were looking forward to schmoozing with the girls. Shawna didn't say anything about the guys until a few episodes later, I don't think. We got a quote from Jenna in the first episode that "she just wanted to beat the guys." Who won? Jenna, a female. Also, there was the legend of the Amazonian women and how they were supposedly so powerful, leading to the idea that a woman would win. Fast forward to the previews and video interviews for S9. We're hearing a number of ladies talk about flirting or being overestimated based on their looks and how it'll help them get far in the game. I haven't heard much from the guys about how they're going to hit on the girls or stuff like that -- am I missing anything on that front? I submit that this editing is a hint that a male will win this edition of Survivor. Sure, I've got a 50% shot of being right, but this could be an example of the editing being slanted this way. And finally, to keep up with the editing slant of the Amazonian women being powerful = a woman winning S6 ... we're hearing about the Vanuatu culture where the men 'rule' and the women 'follow'. So is this yet another hint that a man will win here? Any other past examples of editing that we could use to help us figure out some pattern that may help in this edition of Survivor?

I would hope a male wins, seeing that all females have won since S5. The editing has become a tricky code to crack. It seems that there are an equal amount of giveaways as there are misdirections. I don't think that the mere fact it is once again boys vs girls can give much away. In S6 the finals were well blended (F6 was 3 girls and 3 boys) so we really didn't see one gender dominate. What I will be looking for in the first episode is a specific quote that will lead in certain direction. For example, in S8 Jonny Fair play said "I'll bet a million dollars that Sandra doesn't win this game" or in S1 when Rich said "I've already won. The check has my name on it." Specifics are usually a dead give away. More famous quotes: "A black person will never win this game" Sean, Marquesas "A Drake will win this game" Rupert, Pearl Islands "We'll be spending my money. Worst case scenario, we'll be spending hers" Rob, Allstars

LAST EDITED ON 08-31-04 AT 03:05 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON 08-31-04 AT 03:04 PM (EST) Well, Pepe, I really don't know if the Vanuatu location could lend itself to a prediction that a male will win. Their location must have been researched long before it was chosen, and I suppose that the male dominant society led them to choose to separate the beginning tribes into male vs. female. If anything the society there could be used to polarize the two groups even more, which makes for more unified tribes. I do find some of the pregame interviews of the contestants interesting though. As you pointed out several of the women are talking of flirting and being overestimated based on their looks and how it will help them get far into the game. It's more interesting to me that some of the men note the history of the winner being more times than not a female. So the men are aware of that and perhaps have studied how they indeed do it. I also find it interesting that more than a few of them vow not to lie or backstab. This intrigues me! Can't wait for the first episode to get a handle on some of the key quotes!

Hey everybody!! First post here since the end of S8...and I got nothing to say.But about the editing, I'm thinking MB and crew won't change their approach too much because the reality is that probably less than 1% of viewers are trying to do any spoiling and the rest are just sitting back saying, "Oooweee, I didn't see that coming. Lex is such an idiot." The editing is all about keeping the average viewer fat, dumb and happy. But perhaps Survivor will throw us a bone and try to slip a little editing misdirection our way. Perhaps they'll do the opposite of some of the gender editing/key quotes style from S6. Or perhaps the guys will wise up and realize that having a pissing contest is no way to keep the girls outnumbered. -BxB I do more to not work than actual work.

Hey, BxB! Good to see you back!Someone here was looking for the index of all the past challenges you made for All Stars. Webby was hosting it somewhere, but I can't remember where. It might come in handy for S9, since MB rarely comes up with a completely original challenge anymore. Bridge for sale to highest bidder. Call 1-800-BRroach.

LAST EDITED ON 09-03-04 AT 12:00 PM (EST)I just saw some new promos for S9 last night during BB5. It shows separate clips from different survivors. Thought it was interesting that Brook's quote was something like "I tend to be a leader and we all know that leader's usually get voted off first in Survivor" (I'm paraphrasing, but it was very close to something like that). Seeing as there are rumors floating arount that he may be the first boot, I found that quote to be very interesting. Could it possibly be one of the key quotes that we should pay attention to? Also, does anyone have copies of the new promo being run? And perhaps a copy of everyone's quotes? I would be interested in analyzing all of their clips that are being aired. I can't remember what anyone else said off the top of my head....

They have the new promo over at Fever but I don't know how to copy pics onto threads...But here is the voice over for the commercial. Looks like I heard Brook's comment incorrectly, but I still find it intriging! Voice Over... VO: Survivor: Vanuatu is coming. The women are taking on the men but that's just the beginning. Dolly: I'm happy as long as I get my way. Brady: I love women and especially the ones that are here now. Ami: I've got what it takes. Brook: I refuse to be a leader on this island as we all know, leader's are sent home early. Mia: Play hard, don't let down your guard. Rory: I love Vanuatu, there's costumes, there's magic, I'm just so pumped up.
I also saw a second version with Eliza and other survivors, but don't see that up at Fever yet. Hey BR, will you be starting a thread with the new promo pics?

27. "RE: Past-challenge summary" |
Just wanted to throw a thought out there.I was watching the P&G DVD last night, and on S6 I was reminded of how arrogant the guys were when they realized that they were same sex tribes. Then they lost challenges right and left. S6 did have challenges that catered to one sex over the other, the most obvious one was the fishing challenge, which the men dominated. But the very first challenge, the obstacle course, shouldn't have been such a slam dunk for the girls. The girls did have 2 inherent advantages that show themselves in a guys vs girls situations. 1 - The girls communicated with each other and acted as a team. The guys just acted like 8 individual guys and not as 1 coherent team. 2 - The girls listened to directions and followed the challenge instructions. The guys (actually, mostly just Ryan) just did what they thought the needed to do to get buy. Imagine that - a man who is headstrong and doesn't listen to directions until it's too late. *watching all the wives and girlfriends in America nodding their heads affirmingly* The only reason why I bring this up is to point out that the same sex teams have got to have a different result this season than they did in S6. At least one of the nine men had to have seen S6: Amazon. If he (whichever one he is) can keep them from making the same arrogant mistakes that the men made the first time, then the men stand a better shot at winning. Also, we don't know how long they will stay same sex tribes. In S6, the tribes didn't become mixed until day 14, after Dave and Jenna had their young-person rendevous-slash-reward. With 18 people, that dynamic may change by the day 13-15 range, and with the speed-up of tribal councils to get rid of 2 extra tribe members. This sounds like it should be fascinating to watch - to see if these survivors learn from previous survivors' mistakes!

JohnAm I missing something? Do we know that the tribes will not remain dividied by gender until the merge? I have to agree that the players should be mindful of the downfall in the Amazon. On the other hand, I have to think MB will also be mindful of that and may shoot for a different outcome. I think if a poll of viewers was conducted, the majority (both men and women) would say that they have a greater appreciation for games that end with a collection of truly strong players vying for the prize. Physically strong, mentally strong, and /or solid strategists. When the really popular players get taken out early in the game, the shows popularity wanes. We all have friends who have said, " I stopped watching when Hunter was booted," or "There's no way that little twirp would have survived in the real world." Granted the game is a lot more than a wilderness survival test, but a lot of viewers just don't feel right about the weasely street gang taking down Super Woman or Captain America. MB knows that the best ratings will occur when the final three consists of at least two players who could be viewed as the best of the best. Caveman

No guarantee that they will stay same sex to the merge, and no guarantee that they will have a swap before the merge. Then again, we haven't had a season since S3 that didn't have some type of swapping of tribe members. S3 - swapping of 3 tribe members S4 - change the tribes by stepping on a stone S5 - optional tribe swap (no one bit, though Shii wanted to) S6 - Jenna and Dave pick new teams S7 - losing tribe gets a member S8 - dissolution of Saboga, plus the "pick your buff but only Amber changes" swap I think EPM realizes that you have to shake up alliances in order to keep things interesting for the viewers, and so that the players don't become complacent in their alliances. As far as strategy, the best thing that the guys could do in this game is stick together to the end. Heck or high water, they stick together. I do get tired of the weak players making it to the end. I actually liked seeing Rupert/Jenna/Rob/Amber in F4 on All-Stars, because you actually had 2 strong, competitive men. Let's hope we can get something like that out of S9!
