PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats, but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are encouraged to read the complete guidelines. "Turkey Alternatives (a small salute to the Old Version Joy of Cooking)"
I have the new Joy, but treasure my ragged copy of the unrevised older Joy of Cooking. The old version contains many depression era recipes that were dropped from the newer, lighter version (e.g., Apple Brown Betty, Bread Pudding). The old version also contains recipes for game it used to be more politically correct to eat, like:

Squirrel
Quail
Rabbit (sorry, SB!)
and my personal favorite-Snipe!

Yes, if you are ever on a successful snipe hunt, let me know, and I'll send you an amazing recipe...

The Old Joy also tells you how to make hideous molded creations out of rice and how to keep bees.

LOL In our family, the treasured cookbook is Betty Crocker's Big Red Cookbook. When I moved out on my own last year, I kept trying to steal my dad's 30-year-old copy but he'd catch me. My mom gave me a new copy for Christmas last year, but the recipes have all been changed, so whenever I look for an old favorite, I usually have to call Dad and then I re-write the ingredients in my copy.

A JSlice of holiday spirit!

I definately think we're twins ginger... We are the only ones to watch RW/RR challenges,(although I've noticed some more posters there as of late) we are the only people who still own the old school joy of cooking, and we're both the hottest women on the planet...

1. Sweet Rose - We are definitely twins, if you overlook the half century difference in our birthdates (which I am happy to do).

2. Spicey DW - I didn't check the whole Small Game section, but I'll bet Dweezel's self-serve suggestion is in there. In fact, I'll bet there's a recipe for weasel sauteed and then surrounded by gelatin, in a fancy mold.

3. Apparently that pesky leftover squirrel fat (you know, the big can of squirrel fat you always have sitting next to the sink) can be made into decorative candles.

The mitzvah that is my signpic courtesy the genius that is our own JSlice. Such a nice girl! Now, have some more borscht.

Please. No gelatin. It feels tingly against the fur.

I would recommend serving me with snow peas in a white wine sauce.

Now I'm getting hungry for weasel.

The only problem with eating weasel is that, a couple of hours later, you want more.

I endorse all biosexual stereotypes that are flattering, including that one.
