Ayak, you make great points but I need to note that if you have to bring up "Call for the dead", you're almost making my point for me. In my opinion, Le Carré's best work was in the 70's (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; The Honourable Schoolboy; The little drummer girl) If "The spy who came in from the cold" hadn't been a success, we probably would never have heard of the first 2 novels who would not have been reprinted. Most Le Carré fans would tell any new reader to skip the first 2 because they are amateur work. 24's story is amateur work also. Would you read that if it was a novel? The special effects and the fast pace are almost tricks thrown in, hoping we don't see the total lack of logic.
