"RE: Round 3:" LAST EDITED ON 04-03-05 AT 08:37 PM (EST) basically agree here. i don't begrudge Anthony making the move he thought he needed to make, although it was a little low - think he could have done it without being so dishonest. but i do feel sorry for Brent, because he seemed like a really good guy, and for Jimmy, who was ready to fight. i don't feel too sorry for Joey though, wow what a whiner. he's still got time to prepare, even if it's a different match than he expected i missed bits of the show though cause i was switching back and forth between the show and Baylor's march to the national title game!   Top

There is a boxer on the East Coast named Reggie Strickland with a career record of 66-272-17. Losing to Reggie Strickland means that you're a pretender, not a contender. Reggie fought three of the contestants on The Contender. In Sept. 2003, he lost an 8-round unanimous decision to Anthony Bonsante. In both April 1998 (3-round DQ) and March 1999 (6-round decision), he lost to Jonathan Reid. But Brent Cooper? Reggie beat Brent Cooper in a 4-round decision in February 1998, and then they tied in a 4-round rematch in June 1998. Career records versus Reggie Strickland: Anthony 1-0-0 Jonathan 2-0-0 Brent 0-1-1 As a result, many of us have argued right along that Brent was the worst boxer on the show. We didn't see anything last night to shake that belief.   Top

He said Joey is one of the biggest whinning SOBs on the show and that as the weeks go on the guys come around and understand why he did what he did. The thing the rest of the fighters don't get is that only one guy stands alone with $1 million at the end and I doubt that the winner will split the money with his teammates. Tony is 32 years old and this is probably his last shot. He's is playing the game perfectly. I think once it gets down to the final 8 anything can happen but as far as the mental game goes, Tony is leading that category.   Top

Anthony will not be permitted to pick his fight again, so who is he going to beat? Peter, who cleaned his clock two months before The Contender? Ishe, who was the only fighter on the show ranked in the top 10 with ALL FOUR rating bodies (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO)? Jesse, who was ranked in the top 15 by the WBO? Alfonso, who started things off by upsetting Peter? Sergio, who has proven himself in Olympic-style boxing? He's not going to be able to fight the winner of one of the two remaining first-round matches, and they are the only ones he'd have a chance against. All he's done is seal his second-round doom, at the cost of his reputation.   Top

Once they're in the final 8 it is going to be tough. Ishe and Peter, I think, are the best fighters out there. I'm not all that impressed with Jesse or Sergio and Alphonso may have gotten lucky with the win over Peter. Am I saying Tony is going to win it all? Heck no, but so far he's the only boxer that is playing the game. The other thing about Tony is he's got boxing experience. He's probably boxed in at least 10 more fights than any other boxer on the show. Yeah, I'm rooting for him. Do I think he'll win the whole thing? Probably not. Could he make it to the semi finals, he's got a good chance. Only time will tell.   Top

And for the record he has not faught 10 more fights than any one else on the show, look it up, and if you take away the chumps he has faught his record is 2-4-1. And dont forget Manfredo did not just beat him, he won every round cleanly, and dominated him from start to finish.   Top

The dude won't shut up about f***in' Jesus all epsiode, about how Jesus wants him to be The Contender, ends up the first boxer to get KO'd the entire show, then says "I guess it's not God's will" at the end. What a loser. Take some responsibility, #####, you can't substitute one addiction for another and expect to succeed. The prepared don't win fights because God favors the prepared. The prepared win fights because they're prepared. That being said, he didn't get much of a chance to prepare. Tony's not the only guy out there with a kid - and, kid or no kid, taking the easy way out is pretty hard for me to respect. Which is difficult b/c, otherwise, he's such a likeable, sincere guy. And, facing the easiest guy or not, he's one hell of a boxer. He might be the one to win this thing. I'd really like to see Juan fight.   Top

What I love about this show is the whole family angle. These guys are all out there to make their loved one's lives better and I feel so bad at the end when the loser is interviewed.   Top

Remember what his g/f said? Don't make her go home and tell "Daddy" he's a loser? I laughed soooo hard. Good riddance. I felt like jumping through the TV and taking him out, myself. Every single time it showed the guys working out, where was Ahmed? Upstairs. Getting a backrub. F***ing joke. Watching Reid leave wasn't THAT bad, though. Largely b/c of his final statements about reconsidering boxing. If he was unsure of whether or not he wanted to continue, he lost the match before he got there. But Peter, Najai, Miguel, those were tough. The most haunting line in reality TV history: "I feel greatness ahead of me." My jaw f***ing dropped. I also find it hard to put my anger into words that this show isn't doing better in the ratings department. It's one of the best shows on television.   Top

Who has he ever beaten? Boxing is a sport that requires you to beat somebody to be somebody. The best fighter he has ever fought is Manfredo who has also never really beaten anyone. And Manfredo did not just beat him, he whooped him silly. I agree with you 100% that the family aspect is nice, I would not mind if they went to a 2 show a week platform, first show is an introduction to the fights and the second is the fight. But I guess that would be asking allot.   Top

I just really wanted this show to "take off", so to speak, as it's better than anything Burnett's doing lately. It's, quite simply, one of the best shows on TV. Survivor and Apprentice have both lost their luster. So they'll continue the season...whether or not they'll fork over the green to produce DVDs is another question.   Top

I realize that Cooper was very inferior but you can't tell me that Tony is not at least a decent boxer...I mean he absolutely tore Cooper apart, unlike any boxer so far in the show. That said, do I think he could beat Manfredo or Ishe? I kinda doubt it. But in a five round fight anything can happen because there is no room for error. That goes for any boxer there, including a guy like Joey who has very little experience. You never know when Lady Luck is involved.   Top

"RE: 04/03 Episode Discussion" I think Tony's going to be fighting harder than he has in the past based on his record. Simply because of where he gets his energy, from his kids. As such, he seems a bit of an opportunist. He jumped on this opportunity. So while he may not have more riding on this than the other boxers, he's certainly acting like it. Weak opponent or not, he came out of his corner on fire last night. If he fights with that amount of energy next round, he could find himself in the Final Four. I'm really pulling for Sergio to make it to the Final Four, though. I really like that guy for some strange reason.   Top

"RE: 04/03 Episode Discussion" One thing that nobody's brought up is the fact that Tony comes out of this fight in great shape physically -- certainly much better than Manfredo, who already has fought twice and looked pretty battered after last week. So I think it was good strategy -- just over two rounds of work and Tony didn't have a mark on him, so he's that much more ready to go the next time. anyone know how far apart the fights are?   Top
