As with most communist countries, it has some strange restrictions. There is a ton of tourism there in certain areas, but there are also areas where foreigners are not allowed. I haven't been there myself, but friends of mine got into trouble and caused a real commotion when they got off a train at a city where they weren't allowed. Has anyone traveled in China? Maybe some taxis aren't licensed to take foreigners. The racers had an easier time getting cabs in another location, but maybe that was someplace where more tourists congregate, and so do the taxis that can pick them up.   Top

Yes, I guess there could be some racism against American travelers but in general they are pretty good. When they landed in China and as Freddie mentioned later, it was peak hour. Nearly impossible to flag down a cab not because they are racist but because all drivers are going to their daily locatiins, pick up points, taxi stands, etc.. to get passengers. They are not supposed to pick people up in the streets, only designated taxi areas. Later, if you noticed, it was easy to get cabs because it was off peak and they can do what they want.   Top

"RE: Top #10 Reasons Not To Pick Up A Team In Your Taxi (Shanghai Edition)" DW lived in Shanghai and if you check out the Update thread you can see that it is against the law to pick someone up outside of the pick-up areas which are about 100 yards in front or behind the bus stops, this goes for peak and non-peak times. During peak times most taxi's are going to scheduled pick-ups so you have to watch for the green light just to the right of the drive.   Top
