Titus- Almost laughed till I cried every episodeFreaks and Geeks- Eerily realistic and funny Undeclared- Hillarious Sliders- sci fi show on sci fi channel about a guy who invents a machine to travel between dimentions then gets stuck out of his own dimention. Lasted quite a while... but I loved that show. X-Files- Lasted forever, should have lasted longer. Had a combo of comedy, sci-fi, and drama.. was great My So Called Life- had to make the list Andy Richter- HILLARIOUS Flipper- Not any of those stupid new ones, the original. I just never get sick of seeing that show for some reason..

6. "A Top 5 List" |
LAST EDITED ON 06-20-03 AT 01:27 PM (EST)The Top 5 "Died Before Their Time" TV Shows, according to Fester: 5. TV Nation - Say what you will about Michael Moore (after all, he has crept past Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley on the All-Time Mockability Index), but this show was howlingly funny and scarily disturbing at the same time. I'll admit I missed it when it switched to Fox (now there's a marriage made in Hades--Moore and Fox), but I think it was the beginning of the end of poor Mike's sanity. 4. Police Squad! - This show lasted about a minute and a half, yet was probably the funniest show on TV at the time. 3. Freaks and Geeks - Maybe because it was so eerily similar to my own high school experience, but I thought it was pure genius. 2. Max Headroom - Probably failed due to being about a decade ahead of its time. Still, even in high school, I could see this show was brilliant. 1. SportsNight - No brainer here. This show was a Top 5 best show ever, and it only lasted 2 seasons. No one writes teleplays like Aaron Sorkin. No one. Fester <-- Still mad at ABC -- those effers.

News Radio- I think it went downhill after Phil Hartman died. It was funny, but not as funny as when he was there. Still miss it though, I try to catch it in syndication. My So-Called Life- I totally loved this show. It was so real. Really reminded me of my life in high-school. I still have the Christmas episode on tape, and I watch it every year. Oz- Recently departed. They're still showing reruns, but I would loved for the show to have stayed on for an extra season or two. Short-Attention Span TV (Comedy Central)- This show was cool, with movie clips, comedian clips, all different kinds of stuff. Here's a question though if anyone wants to answer: Some producers of shows end them while they're going well instead of taking the chance of the show running into the ground (jumping the shark or whatever). I can kind of understand this, although I think some shows end way too soon, with either a dissatisfying closure or none at all. Like, I think Oz should have gone on for 2 more seasons, and then that would probably be enough. Any thoughts?

LAST EDITED ON 07-20-03 AT 00:53 AM (EST)EDITED to add: As someone below me said, Do Over. That show was awesome. So funny, and that kid really pulled it off, i almost really believed he was in his 30's LOL! My So-Called Life: This was my fav. show of all time so far. I was so addicted to this show. I taped every episode when they reran them on MTV. I haven't watched them in a long time, but i loved it. Get Real: This would be my 2nd fave of all time. Argh, still p.o.'d about it ending. I maybe have one episode taped somewhere. So mad that i didn't tape them all, would love to go back and watch them again. Malibu Shores: Was different but i liked it. I have every episode of this show taped. And i'm not sure how it ended. I'll have to go watch it sometime. Popular: Awesome show...so funny. I don't remember the ending to Malibu Shores, but i know the other 3 didn't have endings. And Popular ended with a cliff hanger, so we'll never know what happened! and the last show was so awesome, BOOHOO. I hate these morons that decide to end shows with no endings. At least bring back ONE MORE DARN episode for us who love the show, to end it. UGH! Roz

ABC waited too long to decide on picking up My So Called Life and Claire Danes moved on. You're talking about "girls club" that was on Fox Monday nights after "Boston Public." I really liked that show too, but Fox pulled it after only TWO EPISODES! Made me so mad! It had a great cast - Gretchen Mol, Kathleen Roberts and Chyler Leigh. That show definitely deserved more time on the air.

>>>edited to add TITUS. Ive never laughed so hard at a show in my life.<<<Yes Esbea! I loved that show! And for those of us who haven't realized how hilarious it is, here is a little snippet that I happen to remember by heart... Notes: Erin is Titus' girlfriend/fiancee? (can't remember which) and the lines may not be exactly right, but this should capture the gist of it. Scene: Titus, Erin and his family are being held up by a robber. Titus' mom and dad are knocked out at the table and Erin is doped up by drugs that Titus' dad originally intended to use on his mom. The robber has just pulled out a gun. Robber: Nobody move! Titus: Oh my God he's got a gun! Erin: He's got a gun! Titus: Why didn't you tell us you had a gun? Robber: Because I didn't, <points at Erin> I found it in her dresser drawer. Titus: What? When did you get a gun? I thought we didn't have weapons! Erin: Well, I bought it one day because you never know when you might need it to protect yourself! Titus: But what about all that self-defence karate stuff I taught you? Erin: Well, sometimes it won't work. <points at Robber> Like what about him? He's got a gun! That show cracked me up (Another IceCat original )

Sports Night was a great show. Good, crisp dialogue, superb acting. Gald to see that most of the peeps in this show went on to other shows.Titus was great. We laughed ourselves silly every episode. Stark Raving Mad-I loved this show. Very funny. Herman's Head was funny. It was a weird concept, which is problably why it didn't last, but it cracked me up. I agree with Roswell. I loved that show! My only complaint is that towards the end, it got too relationship-y. They alienated (get it "alien"ated. hee, hee. bad pun, sorry.) the original fans who liked the sci-fi part but those people who like the "relationship" shows didn't like it because of the sci-fi. Despite that, it was a great show and I was sad when it got cancelled. On the contrary, what shows stayed around even though they sucked and you wish they had gotten cancelled? I guess that could be another thread...maybe it is already, who knows. smiles the tvgeek

30. "RE: Shows That Died Too Soon" |
LAST EDITED ON 07-19-03 AT 10:59 PM (EST)Like many people on this message board, "Sportsnight" tops my list, along with the aforementioned "TV Nation." But also Michael Moore's other show, "The Awful Truth." And: "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." -- starring Bruce Campbell in a sci-fi/fantasy/western/comedy. When this Friday night show was cancelled, put on in its place was . . . "Strange Luck" -- DB Sweeney's character was the lone survivor of an airplane crash when he was a small child, and has been blessed/cursed with good luck ever since. Now he struggles to piece together the few memories he has of who his parents were and why he was on that plane. "Do Over" -- a short-lived sitcom with a time-travel theme, in which a man in his thirties find himself a teenager again. Very funny, well-written, well-acted show . . . I just realized that both this show and "Brisco" have actor Julius Carry in them. Talk about weird coincidence! "VR5" -- another extremely short-lived Friday night show that filled the spot vacated by "Brisco" and "Luck," this one about a young woman exploring her mysterious past with the help of a shadowy advocate, as they face intrigue while delving into the world of virtual reality. Look, it's Giles! Oh, wait, he's called "Oliver Sampson" here. "Father Ted" -- hilarious sitcom from across the pond about three Catholic priests exiled to a small Irish island. Guaranteed to inflame Catholics everywhere! This show's untimely demise was not brought about by that, though, but the untimely death of the Father Ted himself, Dermot Morgan. A terrible shame. "Remember WENN" -- brilliantly sparkling creation of Rupert Holmes (best known for "Escape (The Pina Colada song)") that took us into the lives of the employees at pre-WW2 radio station WENN in Philadelphia. It had humor; it had charm; it had pathos (though not too much); it had great performances by a winning cast. It had no chance whatsoever! American Movie Classics cancelled it to put on a similar period show that they thought might cost less money, thus pissing off loyal followers of WENN like myself, who refused to watch this new show. Does anyone remember "The Lot"? I didn't think so! (PS: Just thinking about this again, I'm pissed off at AMC all over again!) "Doctor Doctor" -- Max Headroom himself, Matt Frewer, sets up practice with three other doctors . . . including Julius Carry! Man, does that guy get cast in a lot of good shows that end up cancelled, or what?

A couple of others, the first of which was mentioned by others: Undeclared. That show was just hilarious! (except, strangely enough, for the episode in which Adam Sandler appeared) Quantam Leap The Lone Gunmen Black Adder. Four series of six episodes each is not enough! I want to see Rowan Atkinson bring Black Adder into the swinging sixties, where maybe his character could be a Beatle-hating member of the British government during the Profumo scandal. Chalk. Another British comedy, this one written by Coupling scribe Steven Moffat who, as always, was at the top of his game.

Yeah, I saw those. Blackadder's Christmas Carol was hilarious, with lots of great guests and very funny moments. The recent Black Adder time travel show however, just sucked! Black Adder was totally de-fanged. He wasn't allowed to be his malevolent self. It fell far short of what it could've been. Also, on the British Comic Relief, some skits called Black Adder the Cavilier Years, aired. I believe they're available on one of the DVDs of Black Adder. Oh yeah, just thought of another show that died too soon: "Dark Skies," the quasi-historically-set UFO/conspiracy sci-fi show that took us from the sixties to the present, how aliens were responsible for everything from the JFK assassination to George W. Bush election (okay, I was just kidding about that last thing, even if Bush is an alien-being).

I.Heart.WittyOne. Of the ones you mentioned, I liked:"The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." Bruce Campbell is the best gosh darn B-list actor. "Do Over". I admit the reason I liked this was purely nostalgic, as the protagonist is approximately my age. I liked that the song lyrics "...back where you started" propelled the action. "VR5" Wasn't that was Lori Singer? I remember that she was trying to find a way to get her mother out of some catatonic state and could communicate with her via virtual reality. I noticed that you also mentioned "Quantum Leap" and "Black Adder". I loved those! I agree with the mentions of "Herman's Head", a show that ended too soon. I'd like to add one I haven't seen yet (but just might see by the time I get to the end of the thread): "John Doe". I am so frustrated that this show only had one season, and just when it gave us a HUGE revelation during the final show! I would have loved to have seen the repercussions of that friendship betrayed. The shows from my youth I miss most are "Voyagers" (time travel with hunky Jon-Erik Hexum, R.I.P.) and "Greatest American Hero". Who didn't sing along with the theme? I actually took the time to write down the lyrics to the song when it had radio airplay, but I only remember the chorus now. Lori

Someone mentioned Seinfeld. Does anyone else remember the episode when we heard George's answering machine, with the chorus to the Greatest American Hero theme on it? Except, instead of the usual lyrics, it had George singing, "Believe it or not, George is not home . . ." or something like that. I don't remember the rest of it, but it was really funny.

It's obvious what happened in that final Quantam Leap episode. Sam leaped far into the future, where he became Jonathan Archer, captain of the Enterprise. Now if you could explain to me what happened in that last episode of The Prisoner . . . By the way, a couple more shows I just thought of: Cupid, with Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall. Piven thinks he's Cupid, God of Love, and he could well be . . . or he could be mentally unstable. We never find out -- or whether he's successful in uniting 100 couples in true love -- because this show was cancelled after only a few episodes or so! Angel. After an uneven fifth season, this show was unceremoniously dumped by the WB -- who then, after the last episode, had the gall to thank the show for its five-season run. There coulda been more if you dumbasses hadn't cancelled it!

I have boycotted all NBC soaps and moved straight to the competition "As the World Turns" since that's where half the AW cast went. Also loved "Party of Five". Miss you Charlie! There was a show this weekend on Bravo called "Brilliant but Cancelled." Covered many of these shows as well as offering rather tantalizing glimpses of pilots that never saw the light of schedule, etc. My favorite was a comedy starring Adam West as an over-the-hill TV detective who tries to solve real crimes (but doesn't really get that he was always just an actor, not a cop - he carries around an honory badge he received as a star from the LAPD in a lucite cube and flashes the cube like a real badge when he gets to the crime scene). Anyone else see? >

Top of my list would have to be the recently departed Firefly. This gritty, edgey sci-fi show was the perfect "anti-Star Trek". But the network executives couldn't understand it (they even asked Whelan to dumb down the pilot episode) and so it died after less than one season. I'm crossing my fingers about the rumors that it will be released on DVD.Next would be Andy Richter Controls the Universe. Very funny, and just wacky enough for my tastes. Still not sure what ever happened to it; it seemed like it just faded away. I have to agree with some of the others that I really miss Max Headroom, and that I really enjoyed the first season of Dark Angel (when they introduced the Nomlies though, it all got a bit too weird for me). And I can believe that someone else actually remembers Misfits of Science! I thought I was the only one! the Ghost Cat "God has created the cat to give man the pleasure of caressing the tiger."

I think you mean Eerie, Indiana, not Pennsylvania . . . I remember just a little of that show (the one thing that stands out in my mind is in the opening, showing the weird things that happened there: Elvis lived in the town (I think he was picking up the bottles of milk from his porch and waved as the main kid rode by on his bicycle).

25,000 Dollar Pyramid. Loved it. I still catch it on reruns. I think they could have gone on forever with this show. Seeing as ##### Clark was the host and he doesn't age... Theoretically, they could. I mean, it wouldn't be the same without Betty White occasionally appearing, but, you know what I mean. The State. A sketch comedy show on MTV. It was absolutely hysterical. I could grace you with many quotes, but I will only say two. "Like Adidas! But. For less money! I get extra stripe!" and "The children, they stand outside the ice cream truck...hoping... for one day. ice cream." The Chevy Chase Show. This show only lasted about a week, maybe less. I think they could have gone another week at least. Just cause it wasn't funny, doesn't mean you shouldn't give Chevy the respect he deserves (i.e. 8 days of programming instead of 4). The 2003 World Series. I think they could have gone to game seven. If only the Yankees had their acts together. The Secret World of Alex Mack. I think Alex should have gotten to go to college. The Adventures of Pete and Pete. The Nickelodeon show starring Pete, Pete's brother Pete and Ellen. Not to mention Artie, the strongest man....... in the world. HILARIOUS. EIGHT more years at least. There are more, so many more. Later skaters, Dan

I've got a short list. Seen some of 'em up above. 1. SportsNight - yes, intelligent, witty, fast paced dialog. Way over the head of the "masses" for ABC. 2. News Radio - not the same after Phil Hartman's death, but still very enjoyable. 3. Max Headroom - I think FesterFan said it was "10 years ahead of it's time". He's right. The first of the retro-modern futuristic ideas. It may still be airing on Tech TV, at least I remember seeing it there late night very early this year. I also liked the sitcom the star had afterwards, .... can't remember it's title or his name. 4. The Job - These acerbic protagonist shows generally don't last long, but I liked Dennis Leary in it. Remember Dabney Coleman's show? I liked that one, too. 5. Somebody help me with the title of this show, circa '80s, on ABC. It only aired 3 or 4 episodes, but it was hilarious! Set as a live TV show -- The Lance Armstrong Show? -- on the Zablodnik Network in the 1950's. Blinky on the sound effects board ... I loved it. Dang, now I've got to do some searching to get the details on this one. -- Ra, as fast as light

left us hanging.I miss... 1. My So-Called Life I used to think that I'm the only one who like the teen stories. They always had Claire Dane's red head character narrating her "so-called" life, but I was excited when another character narrated his "so-called" life in one of the episodes, I used to relate myself to that character... it's not Jared Leto's Jordan... darn, forgot it, but all I remember is that he's a bit geeky. 2. Popular Darn, can't forget their chemistry/science/P.E. prof, Bobbi Glass, the girl-boy (confused with the gender) prof once with the mullet obsession, wierd storylines, but sometimes odd but yet funny. I like the "Sam and Harrison" love team. It was my guilty pleasure. I usually locked myself in the room watching what my peers described a "crappy" show. 3. Grosse Pointe Don't know why but I find it entertaining... 4. Titus Christopher Titus and his crazy life stories... 5. Murder In Small Town X I know it should not supposed to be here (since it's a half-reality-scripted show). I pitied Kristen and rooted for Angel.

Oooooh, so many good shows people have mentioned has me thinking about them all over again:"American Gothic" ("Someone's at the door" -- cool show with a very spooky catch-phrase!) "Murder in Small Town X" -- tv's first and only murder-mystery reality show (Unfortunately the winner Angel, a fireman, died shortly afterwards on 9/11). If this show coupled with "Twin Peaks," it's bastard offspring would be . . . "Push, Nevada" OH FOR GAWD'S SAKE WHY DIDN'T THE STUPID NETWORK LET THIS SHOW COMPLETE IT'S ENTIRE RUN???? And I was determined to figure out the mystery and win the money, too! "Andy Richer Controls the Universe" -- though it's too bad he didn't control Fox Network's stupidity in bouncing this show around a lot before finally cancelling it!

Oh yeah, one more I can't beleive no one has mentioned: "Soap"! Among the many cliffhangers it ended with Billy Crystal's character, Jody, stuck under hypnosis believing he was an old Jewish man!

It was on the air for years and years, but I'm still feeling the emptiness when MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 ended. Its the funniest show I've ever seen and such a clever concept. Thank goodness for SciFi channel that re-runs episodes on Saturday mornings (at 6AM, thank goodness for Tivo too)!
