""Jump the Shark" : Spoiling Tool" |
Snewser has proven to be the most reliable and consistent source of insider “sourced” Survivor information. He protects his source, and reveals the weekly picks in a fair and consistent way, without disrupting the other games and spoiling activities of the spoiling community. He has earned our respect. His Survivor spoiling game has become a fixture in the spoiling community and attracts the best of the spoiling community’s spoilers, who play the game to compete for bragging rights at the end of the season. This season it’s called “Jump the Shark”. The questions Snewser writes for the game are based on a combination of information obtained from his “source”, and his knowledge of the current state of the spoiling gathered from the various spoiling boards. He apparently compares what he knows will happen, to what is being speculated, and arrives at a set of questions that focus on that which is still unclear. Additionally, he assigns point values to the questions that reflect his assessment of their difficulty. Analyzing the questions being asked, and the point values assigned, will often provide some insights into what Snewser knows, and what he thinks the spoiling community doesn’t know… another opportunity for “spoiling the spoiler”. The EP1 questions are a particularly good example, because at the time the questions were posted, the spoiling community was way off track with respect to Jeff Wilson, who most had speculated (thanks to MSN.com) would be eliminated by the “pick ‘em” along with Wanda. Snewser asks: “Not counting Wanda, which other player will leave the game before the first challenge?” 20 points. In hindsight this question is an indication that the “obvious” Jeff Wilson, who most had concluded to be the other player eliminated, was the wrong answer, otherwise Snewser would not have assigned the high value of 20 points to this question. Snewser obviously knew most of us had it wrong, as indicated by his comments on the scorecard…”(What? Almost everyone getting the first Episode wrong? hehehe)” Snewser also asks: “What tribe will Jeff end up on?” 5 points. “What tribe will Katie end up on?” 5 points. Katie was one of the last players to be placed on a tribe and her tribe status was still unknown at the time Snewser posted his questions. In hindsight again, we should have recognized his question about Jeff’s tribe, as an indication that Snewser knew Jeff was not the other player eliminated with Wanda. While Snewser usually knows who’s going each week by Thursday morning, it’s unclear how much other advanced knowledge he gets each week about the details of the show. This week we caught a good glimpse of Snewser’s advanced knowledge with respect to Jeff, Wanda and Jonathan. Snewser gets advanced information; just how much we don’t know, but taking a close look at the questions asked each week in the “Jump the Shark” game offers us a clue. It’s a potential spoiling tool we should add to our arsenal, if we’re not already using it, as we continue in our effort to "spoil the spoilers". Krautboy

55. "History of "Jump the Shark"" |
BraveheartI was watchin the "Happy Days Reunion" a couple of weeks ago (don't ask why)and they explained "Jump the Shark". In Hollywood they use the term, "It's a Jump the Shark Episode" when a series is about to cancelled and they have to do an outrageous episode to try to pull in the veiwers to save the series. The term "Jump the Shark Episode" first originated when Happy Days was about to be cancelled and they had all the gang from the show flown to a resort location to film this outrageous episode to save the show. In this episode Fonzie had to Jump Over A Shark on waterskies! The tactic didn't work in this case and Happy Days was cancelled. To this day TV producers still use the term, "It's a Jump the Shark Episode" when they have to film an outrageous episode to save the show! I don't know what Snewster is implying by calling his game "Jump the Shark!" I hope it doesn't mean that this Survivor is going to be an outrageous season right before it's cancelled???? I can't see that...it's till pretty popular. I would have major withdrawl!!!! Of course it might have nothing to do with the Happy Days connection and just mean that one of our Suvivors will have to Jump The Shark!!! LOLOL Any thoughts?

The tactic didn't work in this case and Happy Days was cancelled....but not until several seasons later. When discussing the "Jump the Shark" episode, Garry Marshall was very proud of the fact that the show hung around for another hundred episodes. jumptheshark.com is one of my Favorites. Makes for some amsuing reading. Just to clarify, "jumping the shark" doesn't really, or always, refer to an effort to prevent cancellation. It's better defined as (from the homepage of jts.com) "It's a moment. A defining moment when you know your favorite television program has reached it's peak. The instant that you know from now on...it's all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it jumping the shark." Often, the show continues, sometimes (like Happy Days) for years. But it's just not he same. From the same time period, think Laverne & Shirley move to California, or Cindy replaces Chrissy on Three's Company or Mr. Furley replaces the Ropers. For me, Survivor jumped the shark with the return of the Ghost Tribe. Others insist it was much, much earlier.

Thanks for the insight Munson! Sorry I was wrong about the immediate cancellation..oops. But you get the jist of it.Happy Days may have stuck around for awhile but as you say they reached the pinnacle of the show. Yes there were spin-offs but they never really reached the popularity of the original show...take Friends and now Joey. "But it's just not he same." For me Survivor has been Jumping the Shark for quite some time now. MB needs to change the type of locations, the type of contestants (people of all the same demographics as I suggested a few seasons ago would be interesting as it wouldn't always be the young vs the the older, men vs. women etc). Currently the show is always on a beach, always the same type of challenges, always the same type of contestants....sure they throw the odd screwball in to the mix but the rest of the contestants are pretty much same-oh same-oh. I'm just curious as to why Snewser chose this season to play a game called Jump the Shark? As FP suggested...maybe the shark episode will spin more interest in this season. One thing's for sure....This messageboard is definately not Jumping the Shark. Survivor for me wouldn't be the same without this board! Braveheart

LAST EDITED ON 02-19-05 AT 09:16 PM (EST)I'm still working on my answers, but I agree with most of yours so far! With the first question, do you think seeing as though Ian is holding a rope, he will try and tie it around the whole box and lift it up? For the RC I think it will just be the fishing/hunting gear, because according to the challenge board, it doesn't mention food. Do you think CBS were misleading us by showing Angie as the "outcast" in the promos? I'm interested as why you think Janu will be reclusive.

I was thinking the same thing, I answered no, but he'll take some thing out of it, but I am wondering if he'll open it and then take just the box and the flint while getting rid of the weight? 2.I think all that they will get will be the fishing/hunting gear thanx to your spoiler pics of the challenges... 3.I think that Koror will win the gear and thus go fishing and supply their own feast, so the outcast has to be someone at Koror....who is the most outcast on that tribe, I think Janu perhaps OR JENN, who do you think? Well, the only reason I did so well, was because I voted early, and received 22 bonus points ;) I still got one answer wrong though, because I was confused about the "days" and how they would be edited. (This doesn't matter now, but I was told that the tribes and walk with jeff, happened Day 3. However, CBS edited it all to look like Day 2.)Good question. It would make sense to get rid of the weight but to keep the box. The box itself could come into use for them later on so they may want to salvage that aswell as just the flint. To bring the rope, Ian must of had a plan. But who knows if the rope is successful. I forgot about the recluse being on the "feast" tribe. Jenn seems rather quite from what we have seen so far. I think Gregg could come to her rescue though, he let her wear his shirt remember? Janu could be freaked out about the rats, and become depressed/reclusive. Caryn hates the island, might miss her children? Someone always has a little emotional breakdown about missing family, early on.

76. "EP3: Spoiling Tool" |
This week Snewser's questions and point weighting may once again be giving us some clues about what to expect in EP3...11.Who will be the first person to drop out of the Immunity Challenge? 5 12. Will anyone quit the game without being voted out in this episode? 15 13. Will any of the castaways switch tribes from Koror to Ulong or Ulong to Koror in this episode? 15 14. Who will receive the second most votes or win a tie breaker at Tribal Council? 5 15. Who will be eliminated? 30 Total Points: 150 This series of questions seems to tell us that there is something significant about the first person to drop out of the game. It's only worth 5 points so the answer is fairly obvious. Jeff, because of his injury will probably be the first.
Will anyone quit the game? The Mersaydeez Spolier says "Jeff get hurt and quits". If we take it literally we might say yes, but Snewser has assigned 15 points to this question, so he probably knows that the answer is really NO. Jeff does get hurt and "quits" the IC, when he is first to drop out of the IC, but he probably stays in the game. Snewser also includes a question asking who gets the second most votes at TC; a pretty good indication that there will actually be a vote, rather than Jeff just quiting. Snewser also asks about the "switch", which is asbsent from the promos, but a topic of discussion because of the Storyboard Chart Spoiler. Again, the obvious answer might be YES, but Snewser has 15 points assigned to this question. The obvious answer is probably not correct. If there were actually going to be a switch, Snewser would probably have asked, "Who gets switched?, or "How many people get switched? Loks like there's no switch this week. In terms of who's eliminated, Snewser has 30 points assigned to this question, but it's a 150 point week. The bootee is only worth 20 % this week, compared to 30% of the points last week...an indication that this weeks boot is probaly much more predictable this week.

Excellent analysis again Krautboy.Of course, Snewser could be reading this thread and doing the OPPOSITE of what we think to screw us up. Hahaha. I think the switch is a significant event because it will tell us if the storyboard is 100% correct or not. Perhaps it's another Thailand (switch if you want) twist. Probst talked about choices this season, so that might fit with that type of twist. Marko

If Snewser asks a question about a tie at tribal council, does it mean there was an even number of people there. Currently we have 9 Koror and 7 Ulong. So either Jeff quits and only 6 go to TC, or the vote is split 3 ways (3,3,1). He left it open with the "2nd most votes part" but why include the tie breaker portion when there is an odd number on both tribes. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but thought I'd throw it out there.

Thought I'd add that Katie sat out the IC challenge last time (I think, I only watch the show once). Therefore she can not sit out the next RC, yet she is listed in 3 of the pairs of non-particpants. There are really only 2 choices there 'Caryn&Willard', or 'Some Other Pair'. 'None of the above' doesn't make sense unless 2 don't sit out.

This is interesting. To me it seems more likely there would be a 3-2-2 vote (three for Kim or Jeff; 2 for the other one; and 2 for whomever Jeff and Kim vote for); or a 4-1-2 vote (four for Kim or Jeff; 1 for the other one; and 2 for whomever Jeff and Kim vote for). But a 3-3-1 vote is possible. Whoever Kim and Jeff vote for should be the person with the second most votes, or the tie-breaker winner. Angie, maybe? If there is a 3-3-1 vote initially, someone else besides Jeff and Kim has to vote for Angie. Bobby Jon, maybe? Then let's say Stephenie, James, and Angie vote for Jeff, and Ibrehem votes for Kim. There is a 3-3 tie between Jeff and Angie. Before they go to the purple rock, Ibrehem switches his vote to Jeff, and Jeff is out. It could go down that way. Bridge for sale to highest bidder. LAST EDITED ON 02-28-05 AT 11:34 AM (EST)Yes, a tie is a possibility, given the scenario you put forth. In terms of "spoiling the spoiler" by analyzing the questions, there's nothing unusual in how Snewser phrased the question or the choices. In past seasons, Snewser has always phrased it in the same way..."Who will receive the second most votes or win a tie breaker at Tribal Council?"...including a tiebreaker scenario as a possibility...so nothing out of the ordinary there. Lets throw out the spoilers we have heard and just try to use logic for a moment pertaining to this weeks boot:If Ulong loses the immunity challenge, why would they choose to vote out Jeff? He is young, he is strong, he does well in challenges (except rowing the outrigger) he has shown a propensity and a desire to go out fishing and provide the tribe with food, he does not seem like he is that hard to get along with at camp, he has a good disposition. If he does get hurt so that he can't compete in the immunity challenge, is that enough reason to want to boot him? Kimberly has been shown to be lazy, she sucks at challenges, she is doing nothing but sucking face with Jeff, in short as James says "she has nothing going for her but her sexuality". The only way that Jeff gets voted out is if he asks to be voted out, and in that event would they listen? Deena's alliance didn't vote Shawna out when she was sick and wanted to be voted out. Bobby Jon would most likely balk at voting for Jeff since he wants to keep the strength, BJ would vote for Kim. James would vote for Kim, he thinks she is useless. Iby would vote for Kim, but might vote Jeff. Angie would vote Kim or Jeff. Kim would vote Angie (no way she votes for Jeff). Jeff would vote Angie (he can't vote for himself and wouldn't vote for Kim), Stephanie would abide and vote Jeff. Are we sure that Ulong loses the IC? The vidcaps don't show us much. We have a conflict between Caryn and Katie thrown at us, misdirection for the boot? Shouldn't we be considering a Koror loss and would be booted if that happens?

Here's the post to which I think you're referring:"Mersaydeez, does he quit a challenge or the whole game? I already gave you the game quitter before she quit and it was left on the cutting room floor: Ashlee, which she talked about the next day in her interviews. I don't think Jeff quits the game, he quits the challenge. The rules say he can. But look for him to make a bonehead move in the process. Sounds like he does something stupid...it either puts the target on his back or cause Ulong to lose, or both?

The title of EP3 is "Dangerous Creatures and Horrible Setbacks". The promo for this week seems to identify Ulong as the tribe that faces a "setback"... "Ulong faces a setback. Since you're asking for a scenario where Jeff would get booted over Kim...What if Kim rallies, a la Angie in E2? Angie was in the crosshairs in E1, and the primary focus was her poor IC performance. So what did she do? She went out and proved herself in the very next challenge. What if Kim does the same? She knows she was a target for at least half the tribe in E2, and likely would've been booted had Ashlee not given up. She has to know her every move is being scrutinized. Likewise, the promos for E2 put Angie in a very vulnerable light. She was quoted saying something to the effect of "I'm on the chopping block". This week, we have James talking about Kim's only use being her sexuality. It very well could be another typical MB red herring. James's comment, like Angie's in E2, is likely post-TC (but pre-RC) day-after kind of stuff. He's probably disappointed in Ashlee and disappointed that Kim's still around. Maybe she pulls it together. Besides, if Jeff out-and-out quits on a challenge, it won't sit well with this group, especially if they think he's dogging it. They very easily could turn on him, especially if he goes Osten and starts whining about his plight. Would you want to keep around a guy whose morale is dead? Morgan kept Osten around, much to their own detriment. I'm still on the fence, myself, as to who's going in E3. Both Kim and Jeff have too high a visibility for my liking. I'm just offering a scenario where the tribe votes Jeff out before Kim. Fester

What should we make of this comment from Snewser in the Mersaydeez spoiler thread over at SSucks?SnewserRegistered User(2/25/05 1:34 am)Reply Re: Just some spoilers... It's funny how when somebody will be voted off in the near future, they're sometimes edited to look safe. Other times, they edit in the reasons why and it looked obvious the whole time. I think MB's trade secret is that he flips a coin to decide whether the editing will be obvious or surprising. Then because it's completely random, you can never guess what's going to happen based on editing patterns that might otherwise be picked up by the neural networks in your brain after 10 seasons. If they could only keep the results secret we would all be wondering tho perhaps not caring. I read this as a commentary on last week's boot versus this week's boot: Ashlee was edited to look safe, while this week MB edited in the reasons for Jeff's boot and "it looked obvious the whole time". He also suggests that "they can't keep the results secret", because he continues to get reliable source information...

I think we're overthinking, folks. That's the exact thing that made my change my Ashlee pick that I had made the moment that the game opened up. I ignored logic to try and make it fit the spoilers.Kim is a far more logical pick than Jeff to be voted out. - Your team loses three straight immunity challenges. Which vote is less likely to damage your team in the long run - the injured strong male who puts everything he has in challenges, or the weak female who doesn't work as hard as the others? - Your team loses three straight immunity challenges. From a strategic standpoint, which vote makes more sense if you're trying to break up a couple? a. James, BJ, Ibe - There's a 4-3 gender split, male to female. Do you give up this advantage? b. Angie, Steph - You have an alliance with James and BJ, and the four of you considered voting Kim off last episode. Why not keep this alliance strong? Besides, if you can rally and start to win some IC's, you're still in the majority alliance in your tribe. There's still hope to be in the dominant alliance post-merge. - Kim had a noticeable spike in face time last episode, which is consistent with imminent boot editing. I think we're trying to fit the "Jeff quits" spoiler and the rumored "voting off strength" (which has already been proven wrong twice) into a "voting off Jeff" scenario. And it's not a comfortable fit. Beblo and Kimdra

I have erased the quote I originally had here. The comment Krautboy made that I should have quoted is this:
"Does Snewser know that a shark will be killed, but not until some future episode when Tom has his machete with him?" I have read several comments made by several posters indicating that the shark was killed by a machete and that Koror didn't have their machete. I just didn't understand all those comments because I thought that was a machete they used to kill the snakes. I obviously picked the wrong time and place to discuss it, and came off being very snappy. I'm apologize. He who angers you controls you.

The questions are up for EP4. Snewser didn't give us much to work with this week...Snewser asks a series of questions about the Sumo Challenge in which he asks "In the first Sumo match between...who wins?" It appears that Snewser knows that the Sumo Challenge is not a single elimination event. It's probably best two out of three or first team to 10 points, but it's obvious that there are multiple matches between the tribes, during which the contestants meet more than once. The matches we are shown in the previews appear to favor Ulong, but if they are just a small sample selected from many more match ups, we might speculate that what appears to be a victory for Ulong could easily be misdirection... The boot question for this carries the same relative point value it did last week; 20% of the total. I wouldn't expect any huge surprises this week, based on the weighting assigned to the question.

To me it seems so logical that Kimber will be toast. But, many peeps are seriously considering Ulong to win the IC, personally, I just don't see that. I have been speculating how the vidcaps can be so misleading, allowing for a Koror victory. Here's what I came up with. Perhaps this Sumo challenge is a fight to the last man standing...and whatever tribe is represented by that man, is the winner. So, Caryn vs. Angie, Angie wins, Caryn is out. Next, Janu vs. Kimber, and Kimber wins, so Janu is out. Next up, Gregg vs. Ibe, Ibe wins so Gregg is out. Next up Coby vs. James and Coby wins so James is out. Next is Tom vs. BJ, Tom wins, BJ is out. Steph vs Jen, Steph wins, Jen out. So now we have Angie, Kimber, Ibe, and Steph vs. Coby and Tom. First up, Coby vs Steph, Coby wins, Steph out. Next is Tom vs Ibe, Tom wins, Coby is out. Next is Coby vs Angie, Angie wins and Coby is out. Next is Kimber vs. Tom, Tom wins and Kimber is out. Next is the final round of Angie vs Tom, Tom wins being the last man standing. Well, it's only an idea! What do you think?

I think it's highly likely that all matchups in this challenge will be gender-based. So I don't expect to see any male/female battles. That is probably why Koror appears to be sitting out 2 men (Ian, Willard) and only one woman (Katie). Each side looks to be putting up teams of 3 men/3 women (now, what would have happened if Ulong was even more lopsided gender-wise than they are is up for speculation). My thinking is that we have either "first to 'x' points", that requires more than the 6 rounds (at least) that we've seen in the promos, or if after 6 rounds they're tied and have to go to a tiebreaker. Things that need to be considered: 1. What constitutes a "win"? Is each battle 1 point? Or is it a "best 2 out of 3 falls"? 2. Is it "first to 'x' points"? Or a set number of rounds? 3. If a tiebreaker becomes necessary, how are the competitors determined? Does each tribe get to designate its "champion"? Or as often happened in past challenges, does each tribe get to select the person from the opposite tribe, hoping to find the weak link? My thinking is that it's a "first to 'x' points" structure, and whatever the number is, it takes more than one time through the lineup to reach it, since we see snippets of all 6 pairings on the platform. ~ When's all been said and done, far more will have been said than done. ~

I really like that idea! This could be another "first" for this season! Sure, it could be harsh, pitting male/against female, but they gotta do that anyway because of the tribe gender imbalance in the first place. So this would not be so outrageous.Along these lines, (I may have missed this is someone else said it already), what if the "leader" picked in RC has to also match up the players for IC? And lastly, FP, you did great in nailing the challenges in Season 9. I'm not technical enough to do this, but what really helped me in addition to your getting the pics in order for those challenges was the breakout threads of what pics belonged to the RC and what pics belonged to the IC. I hope you or someone savvy enough to do that will do it for this season. It really helped in nailing down the misorder of the pics, and the reused pics for me. LookeeLoo Another Dicey Original 2004

With Snewers questions about rounds I decided to see if I could find any hints in the caps that would help determine different rounds. What I found was in some caps there were differences in how wet or dry the opponents were. I noted differences only once for each sequence of caps. The numbers are how many different times I found the person wet or wetter. Keeping in mind that the different sequences could be during the same round. But if someone is soaked even once that would mean they lost at least once. BTW I did find caps of just about everyone with their hair dry so wet hair and soaked clothing is what I used to score by.James 2 ..1 wet hair, 1 soaking wet clothes vs Coby maybe 1..hair and a few drops of water on skin Angie 0 vs both dry in all caps Note Angie never looks wet Caryn 0 Ibr 3...1 wet clothes, 1 soaked clothes, 1 splashing water vs Gregg 1...wet hair Steph 1...wet hair and glistening skin vs Jenn 2...wet hair, going over the edge Kim 0 vs both dry in all caps Janu 0 BJ 0 vs Tom maybe 1 (I can't really tell if his hair is just messed up or wet in the close ups on him) Thats what I found maybe its something we can work with. *I used Phoenix's update caps THANKS PHOENIX*

Cat, I thought that too until I realized that ther are pics of just about everyone on the platform with their hair dry. So most of my observations are based on hair wet that is also seen dry and clothes being soaking wet. Example there is one set of Ibh with wet shorts but there is another with them soaking wet. That would tell us there he competes for a while. If they are soaked from the swim out, he stays on the platform long enough to get partially dry or he just got out of the water from being knocked in. The people with hair are easier. Hair is dry in some caps wet in others. Those are the ones that really tell a tale.
