Big Brother Contestants Move In
Fri May 24, 5:31 PM ET
LONDON. May 24 (Reuters) - The new series of Big Brother kicked off on Friday with the 12 contestants moving into the hit reality TV show's camera-filled house.
This time, 12 people instead of the usual 10 entered the house -- from which losing contestants are evicted in turn until there is a final winner.
The six male contestants entered the house first: Alex, a 23-year-old model, Johnny, a 29-year-old fireman, Lee, a 21-year-old gym manager, 22-year-old trainee solicitor PJ, Sandy, a personal shopper and stylist, at 43 years the oldest Big Brother contestant yet and Spencer, a 22-year-old ski shop assistant.
They were followed by Adele, a 23-year-old DJ and personal assistant, Alison, a 27-year- old cinema manager, 20-year-old Jade, a dental nurse, Kate, a 22-year-old IT desk administrator, Lynne, a 36-year-old mature student and Sunita, 25, a trainee barrister.
The contestants are cut off from the outside world for nine weeks. During this series they will have to "earn" the right to personal belongings such as books, musical instruments or magazines by completing various tasks.
A heated outdoor swimming pool has been added to the set.
Speculation has been rife about whether this will be the series in which some of the housemates get to know each other intimately.
Bookmakers Coral lowered its odds from 20-1 to 2-1 on the chances of two contestants having sex after it was inundated with a rash of large bets.
"We were being offered bets of up to several hundred pounds for those odds -- that's unheard of," a spokesman for the bookmaker told Reuters on Friday.
"It got to the point where alarm bells started ringing. We thought maybe there are people out there who know what's going to happen. As far as we know, they could have hired 12 nymphomaniacs," he said.
The house, the work of top TV set designer Markus Blee, is located at the Elstree film studios in Hertfordshire, covering 730 square meters and kept under tight security.
Each week one of the housemates will be evicted in a public vote that will be presented on TV by Davina McCall, leaving one winner at the end who will receive a check for 70,000 pounds.
A record 150,000 people asked for applications to be on the new show but according to a spokeswoman, the final 12 have still to be selected.
The previous winners of the show, Craig Phillips and Brian Dowling, have both gone on to present TV programs.
