Krautboy 2750 desperate attention whore postings DAW Level: "Howard Stern Show Guest" 01-10-04, 07:39 PM (EST) "EP1 Immunty / Reward Challenge" LAST EDITED ON 01-10-04 AT 10:40 PM (EST) Excerpts from the upcoming TV Guide Article indicate that the EP1 IC/RC will likely be the traditional "Quest for Fire"... http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=1&article=article3958.art&page=1 ... One of the challenges, probably the first, will be an improved version of “Quest for Fire,” the very first challenge ever in Survivor. And some other challenges will also be reminiscent of those we have seen before, but with new twists. Other information in the article includes that Chapera goes into Day 3 without fire, but Sue has been drinking the water and eating raw crabs anyway – will she get sick?... We might conclude that Chapera (Red Tribe) does not win the EP1 IC/RC and that either the Yellow or Green Tribe will be immune. No big surprise, but confirmation of our early speculation... Here's the link to the article and other pics posted at SNN...compliments of SS poster Spirit Of: http://survivornews.net/news.php?id=544 The tribe colors appear to be Yellow, Green and Red. So Blue may be the merge color... The three tribes are shown on rafts with their burning fire cauldrons. This appears to be at the beginning of the IC... Rob is also wearing a scuba mask? For some water element of the first Challenge? Richard on the other hand is wearing nothing... The text says that "...soon they will compete in an immunity challenge that will force the losing tribe to give one of its members the boot." Krautboy   Top

The original "Quest for Fire" challenge from S1 took place in the evening on Day 2: But, you're right, not having fire on Day 3 is not necessarily conclusive. Krautboy   Top

"RE: EP1 Immunty / Reward Challenge" When you consider the fact that Chapera (the tribes have names!!!) does not have fire on Day 3 and therefore has been unable to boil water, they are more likely to become dehydrated during any physical endurance challenge. No fire, limited food options, can't boil water, no sleep on the cold (OK, cool) dark beach = low morale. Also, if the Challenge begins with the underwater portion that requires masks, Rob4 is at a significant disadvantage right off the bat. We know what Rupe and Rich can do in the water. I think it would be a huge upset if Chapera doesn't finish in third place. And Rob6 will start packing for Patagonia.   Top

Horay! let the games begin! Alright, so, I'm looking at these shots. I think this one is the key: I think this shows the YELLOW tribe being the first tribe out of the water. Look at their feet, you can see the RED tribe's platform on the ground behind them. Also, doesn't it look like Richard is just arriving at that point? grabbing the torch from the rear torch holder, right behind the metal burning pot thing on the platform they have to carry. You can see the torch holder more clearly on this shot of the RED team, where Lamber is: Ok, so, Yellow has the lead when they come out of the water. (my prediction is that they keep it.) "Quest for Fire: A symbolic race for fire held on the Sand Spit, an s-shaped sand bar located one mile off Pulau Tiga. The object was to alternately float and carry a cauldron of fire from a position 50 yards offshore to the finish line, which was delineated by a 20-foot high Fire Spirit. In addition, teams had to light a succession of torches between start and finish, with the winner being the first to light all their torches and the Fire Spirit." Krautboy   Top

The GREEN team's first platform is made out of bamboo, while their second platform is a green platform like the one they're starting from. The bamboo one has handles on both sides. This platform isn't waiting for them on land, but rather they swim it through the course, up, and onto land. So wtf is Richard doing? In the shot where he's naked in front of the yellow team? That shot is really weird. And what's that behind the yellow team? Upon closer inspection, it looks almost like the Red team's raft on top of some sort of platform. It looks like there's a handle right behind Ethan's left knee. Also, it seems that Ethan is stepping on a yellow mat. Maybe this is the finish line, with a Red victory? (They seemed quite excited during the 'tom lighting a torch' shot, while Ethan, Jenna and Rudy don't look very happy in this shot.) Hmmm exactly. MM   Top

It looks like Rich is either grabbing or returning one of these torches while the raft is sitting on the ground.   Top

"RE: Original "Quest for Fire"" Two thoughts here... 1) In other challenges, in season's past, most all of the challenges have been to complete one section...move on to the next part. If one person is involved in performing a task for a challenge, the others usually wait for that part to be completed. However, in the pics of the first challenge it appears the tribes are going on and looking back for their other person. Similar to this pic: 2) In this pic we see the Chapera tribe going on with their raft without Susan. Also, if you look on the left side of the pic you see a pot with the fire that is exactly like the one in the Chapera raft. So, at this point in time of the challenge the Chapera tribe is not in last, if that pot has to be picked up by another tribe! I hope that makes sense!   Top

A simple drowning, maybe? This IS gonna be the best Survivor yet! That's a good question. Now that you mention it, I assumed Jerri was hidden behind Rupert but maybe she's missing, too. Off completing some other portion of the Challenge perhaps? ETA: Looking at the three tribe picture again, it looks like Sue, Jerri and Kathy are also preparing to dive into the water. All three are positioned in the front right. The guys with the masks are front left. Perhaps at the start, the three men dive underwater to do what they need to do (probably release the raft), the three women head off to complete another task and all must meet up at the finish line. Again, Sue going head-to-head with Jerri and Kathy in any athletic competition is only bad news for Chapera.   Top

I'll give you that Chapera has stopped but I don't know if I'd conclude they won I bothers me a bit that they would be sitting if they won the Challenge. Sure, they're probably exhausted but they won! I'd assume there would be high 5s and hugging. Do they really care who comes in last? It seems that the RED Tribe has finished their portion of the contest and are waiting for someone (Sue?) to return so they can continue. It then looks like the YELLOW Tribe is so far in second, since Rupert has already returned from getting the tribal torch and is helping them with their raft. The GREEN Tribe at this point seems to be in last, since it looks like Rich is just getting to the fire. He'll then have to go back to the raft and help them move it to shore (indicated by both Boston Rob and Rupert carrying rafts in their photos). As other people have mentioned, this does not necessarily mean that the RED Tribe wins the competition. I like the theory that Jerri, Sue, and Kathy are off doing some other portion of the challenge and then everyone meets up on the shore. It's kind of complicated and forces the tribes to pick people for certain tasks, thereby exposing physical strengths/weaknesses. Based on what's happening, I would venture to guess that the YELLOW Tribe wins the challenge (since Jerri is competing against Sue and Kathy). Then it would be a toss-up for second. I could imagine though that between Lex, Colby, and Rich, the GREEN Tribe could make up time by getting the raft to shore fast. So maybe the spoilers are right thus far with Rob C going out first?   Top

Tom is very aware of being a good roll model for kids in general and his son specifically. ie. Hard working, stand up guy, dependable. Sean and Boston Rob clicked because they were both lazy, and subversive. Boston Rob is much more likely to be Tom's Clarence (strong player targeted for weak character). I don't see Ethan as Hunter2. Hunter was a threat to Boston Rob because Hunter wanted to be the team leader, and Boston Rob only wanted followers in his tribe. Ethan isn't a leader. Ethan has said he was more than willing to let Lex lead, and just do what Lex told him to do. Ehan just wanted to be aligned with the theam leader, let Lex do the dirty work and hope when it came down to the Jurty, that he would be more likeable than Lex was. Ethan isn't a threat to Boston Rob, So he won't be Hunter 2. (I think Ethan is much more likely to be Sean2). I don't see Alicia being Vee2, although I can see her aligned with Boston Rob. I don't remember seeing anything that made me think Vee was Robs sounding board, but then I hardly remember seeing Vee. I do remember in S2 Alicia seemed to have formed an alliance with Jeff V. ie. A snarky subersive who usually had something interesting to say. I would say Boston Rob is more likely to be Alicia's Jeff V2.   Top

Alicia looked to me to be the standout for challenges in that tribe, probably able to outlast the men physically. HOWEVER, looking at the new pics of ROB M, he might be a physical threat this time. It looks like he may have been working on becoming more fit for this one. That would be very smart of him, given his poor performances in all of his challenges. He probably remembers that if he would have been able to win at least ONE tribal IC he might have been able to move alot further in the competition. HERE are pics of him at the beginning of S4 from CBS: Compare those to the pics from the TV guide. He looks much more muscled and definitely fitter (instead of fatter). This could be the first confirmation of a new approach to the game from one of the competitors.   Top

They are in the middle of a challenge, grimacing etc. is what happens when you are lifting a raft and trying to win so we really shouldn't look into that too much. Also we really do not know where in the challenge the picture is coming from. If one tribe (Blue) looks ahead of another (Red) we all know that doesn't mean anything (Panama Island's cannon pull anyone?) Something is also fishy in that picture anyway with respect to what they are showing us with the Green Tribe (or lack thereof) so I'm going general on the picture. The challenge seems practically identical to S1's Quest for Fire right down to the cauldrons. I think this is going to be a very tight race with exhaustion at the end causing a win or loss. Further, while the notation of Red not having fire on Day 3 (as KB pointed out ) and Griffe's notation that it may not mean anything since the challenge may be held at that time is interesting. Well I guess I am more intrigued that TV Guide actually mentioned them specifically. After all, it is possible that they do lose the challenge OR they are the only tribe that could not start it on their own. Either way that gives me a general idea of how Red Tribe is working those first few days.   Top

I taped the show and played it back frame by frame, but don't have vidcapping capability, so will do my best to describe the highlights until the vidcaps show up somewhere. Lex and his tribe are shown carrying their raft with fire cauldron out of the water and toward a torch that Lex lights, off in the distance, floating in the water we see a yellow and red fire cauldron burning on a floating raft. Neither of the other two tribes can be seen in the shots. Could this mean that they are in last place at this point in the race? In another brief sequence JP is shown explaining something to the tribes. We see waht is apparently the Immunity Idol on a small pedistal, hidden under a cloth. It appears to bne about two feet tall. The most interesting sequence appears to show the tribes immediately after the challenge. Rob C. and Sue have big smiles as the red and green tribes hug. Rob hugs Jenna and Amber hugs Colby. Colby however, does not appear too enthusiastic in hugging back. He has either received a consolation hug, or is just not happy with second place. I did not notice any of the yellow tribe, although they may be in the background. It could be that we are watching the first and second place tribes celebrate. What seems certain is that the red tribe (Chapera) wins the first IC and that Sue and her tribe will finally get fire and be able to boil water and cook the crab... Krautboy   Top

Also, if you compare the cap of the green tribe arriving on the beach with the caps of the starting positions, the green tribe's floating cauldron should be out of frame to the left in the beach cap. The yellow and red tribemembers would arrive on the beach out of frame to the right. So it doesn't necessarily mean Lex et al are in last place here, they could all be hitting the beach at the same time.   Top

LAST EDITED ON 01-15-04 AT 06:02 AM (EST) Had to edit this this morning because I was thinking that Lex & co. were yellow team while composing this message initially last night at 1 a.m.! Yikes! I think that the angle of this picture makes it entirely possible that we at least wouldn't see the red tribe in the water. Look at where they are carrying the raft (and the direction in which they appear to be running/headed) as opposed to the location of the YELLOW fire "buoy" in the water, also as opposed to the fire station on the beach. We are not looking at this scene straight on from what I can tell. The green fire buoy is nowhere in sight in this cap. We can condlue (it appears) that the yellow team is ahead of the green team, but I don't think it's possible to determine that green is in last place based upon this cap. The seeming alignment of the fire "buoy" with the beach fire station appears to be due to camera angle and not actual alignment (at least that's how it appears to me). I don't imagine that the green team's beach fire station would be aligned with the yellow team's fire buoy, so we're definitely looking at this from a fairly extreme angle. Now that I think about it...do we even know which side the green team is on (in the water)? I have been assuming that their fire buoy was to the left (looking on) of the yellow one, but that could be incorrect. Actually it probably IS incorrect based upon closer inspection of the direction they seem to be coming from. In that case, the RED team should at least be visible, but yellow would not be. This of course unless they are neck and neck, in which NEITHER of the other two tribes would be visible because of the small amount of shoreline that is visible in this picture.   Top

Notice that Colby and Jenna seem to have a lot of sand stuck to their wet swim suits... Is this because there is some element that requires them to crawl on their backs or sit down? Based on what we know about the challenge this is doubtful... More likely is a scenario that has them collapsing or sitting down, exhausted in defeat at the end up the race, after which they gather themselves and walk up to greet the others who have finished in front of them. In victory they would still have enough adrenaline to muster hugs and high fives without collapsing on the sand, in defeat, they are more likely to sit down or lay down on the sand to rest at the end of the race. Looks like the Green Tribe (Moga Moga) lost, collapsed on the sand to catch their breath (and their pride) and walked slowly up to greet the others waiting to say hello and give them a consolation hug... This picture shows them heading straight for a cauldron, I don't see any sandy bodies so on the surface we got water, cauldron, under platform, cauldron so far......... Again, I really don't know about the hugging stuff. KB you saw the preview I didn't so naturally you may have seen more expression than myself in these stills and naturally I always think your opinions are wonderful but I guess on just surface I think this is really the first time they are able to greet each other. I know this is all-stars and they may do things differently, but I dont see that changing especially since they obviously took publicity shots and they wanted the contestants to still look fairly decent. I expect what we are seeing is the challenge arrival shot at the same beach as the contestants were introduced... just two days later. -ICB   Top

Also...I'm going to take a guess that the arm on the right of Lex belongs to Rich - looks considerably bigger and also the apparent height of the person in comparison to Lex/Colby is about right for Rich (or maybe Rupert...but I don't think it looks like Rupert's arm)...not that it matters, but if we are assuming this is from ep. 2 and we are thinking Rich is gone in ep. 1 - we woudln't be seeing his arm in this cap - also Rich is the one holding the flag/banner thing in the first cap for the green team. And this arm is obviously holding a flag/banner (which one I can't tell). It could be Rudy holding the yellow banner/flag (it appears to be the most likely since the yellow banner is the closest to the camera). Maybe these are from the same day/challenge scene. That arm off to the right looks closer to the camera than Colby/Lex (thus appearing larger) AND the person to whom the arm belongs might be standing on that same little wooden step structure...if that is the case, it would explain why we don't see the green Mogo Mogo banner in the first cap - it's out of the picture. If the step thingy is there (someone standing on it) then we could determine that the angle of this shot wouldn't allow us to see either the wooden step OR the green banner. I am wondering if we don't have a second challenge to determine who goes to TC; it seems that there needs to be some measure of fairness for the two losing tribes to determine who should go. We aren't going to see them filming the press photos; those photos are always just "there" and we get to see them. The filming for the challenge could start after they re-enter again. As far as the pic of them sitting down, good points as well as the buff on Jenna; I'm not really sure when this could be taken though I need more convincing it is from a subsequent challenge But much like the curiousity surrounding all these clothing changes and the Where's Sue picture, I think Mark Burnett is enjoying himself tremendously   Top

So I have no problem with MB halting the proceedings for a brief photo-op which can then be edited out. It could go like this: Jeff: "Come on out, Mogo Mogo!" They enter, the other two tribes enter as Jeff calls them, everyone cranes their necks and smiles to see who else is there, while JP gives his introductory spiels. Then they stop and get posed for the publicity shots -- this takes 15 or 20 minutes, say. Then Jeff has them line up again, and the show resumes: he explains the challenge rules, they do the challenge, and finally afterward they all get to say hello. I also agree a run-off between the losing tribes seems fairer in a sense, but I can't see MB doing that for the duration of the three tribe set-up, presumably planned for the first four episodes. Yes there are plenty of examples of someone with a hat or without, with shoes on or not, with shirt tied around waist or worn, khaki pants on over swimsuit or just swimsuit, with shirt on or not…but there are no examples of anyone wearing a DIFFERENT clothing item!!?? If this is really a second challenge on another day, surely someone out of 18 people would change some item of clothing! Does this support the theory that this is the same day, but just two different locations? One location for the promo, group photo…and another location for the challenge? I have looked and there are variations but all the clothing either supports the different arrivals OR the press photos. And some of those photos match their pre show photos perfectly. This is not Panama Island; I doubt they only have one change of clothing so why would they still wear the same clothes (I'm sure Rupert must be a bit tired of his tank shirt) To me, these clothes which are bearing remarkable similarity to their first stint is just that first day build up in their clothes they are known for. Whether it is two separate entrances (photo ops in one place and challenge in the other) I am having a hard time that we are seeing another challenge which is why I still think the opportunity for pre show photos may be shown to us. Let's face it, ASS is different; we'd be more interested in pre show photos of them over strangers. MB just releases his cast photos and we get to work. We know these people, it is different. It's ALSO visible in the "Where's Sue" challenge cap of Chapera (suggesting they are very near the challenge endpoint -- it's really looking like they win IC 1.) But I don't see it in any of the Cast Photo arrival or line-up shots. In that area there appears to be a single tri-colored (red/yellow/green) flag at each end, and a yellow Survivor flag in the back. And as you say, the vegetation and ground cover doesn't look quite the same, but the clothing is barely different. So I'll buy that it's two different locations/occasions on the same day.   Top

"More support for KB's theory" The opening of the TV Guide article: Divided into three tribes of six, the new cast of Survivor: All Stars has traveled, blindfolded, by boat over shark infested waters to reach a picturesque stretch of beach in Panama's Pearl Islands. Soon they will compete in an immunity challenge that will force the losing tribe to give one of its members the boot. But first they get a chance to check out the competition. As thunder rumbles, host Jeff Probst instructs the tribes to emerge, one by one, from the separate patches of the mosquito riddles jungle where they lie in wait. Now this DOES sound like there is a time lapse between when they first see each other and when the challenge occurs. How long of a lapse is the question. If you look at these three caps: The members of Mogo Mogo and Saboga seem to be entering the area via the same path, then going around opposite sides of the post with the three colored banners. The cap of Chapera looks like a point en route on the same path. I think probably that right after the initial "glimpse" and the photo shoot, the tribes were marched off via a single path to the challenge area, which is where we see them re-congregating here. The reason I think it must have followed immediately is the hugging caps. If there were to be a long delay between the two events I think MB would have allowed the contestants to get their hellos out of the way after the photo shoot, and then have no interaction post-challenge. Rather, I think the whole thing was a continuous event that involved two different locations. What I can't figure out though is where Sue's slacks are in the photo shoot arrival caps, since she's not carrying them. All I can think of is maybe there were crafts tables near where each tribe was "lying in wait" and they were allowed to leave items there that they didn't want to wear in the publicity shots.   Top

They were given clothes to wear for the game and it seemed like it would only be the clothes on their backs since they left without any bags or backpacks or anything else to carry more clothes. When they left, the players were made to wear a long black hooded cape-like garment to cover them up completely. "RE: EP1 Immunty / Reward Challenge.. the MASK" One item that might add to some speculation in the order of events is the SWIM MASKs that are seen in the EP1 challenge pics. One of the first pictures that we saw, was in the TV Guide promotion. The specific picture showed the three tribes readying themselves on platforms to begin the first IC. The picture shows RICHARD--RUPERT---ROB M wearing or holding the swim masks for their respective teams. You can see that Richard, Rupert and Rob M are holding their respective teams masks. I would think that they were given these masks just prior to arriving for their promo pics, you can see Rob M holding his mask in the complete cast promo picture. The fact that it happens to be these same 3 competitors holding the masks, makes me believe that they move from the meet and greet/promo picture right into the first IC. One other noticeable thing is that you can see Amber, Shii Ann's, Jenna L's swimsuits under a layer of clothing. I believe they were told that they would have to compete in the water challenge, but there will also be a promo picture taken so they dressed appropriately for both, swimsuits with some nicer clothing over top for the picture. I also noticed that Rupert does not seem to be carrying the mask in the next image, where they are emerging from the grassy area. While not conclusive, it makes me believe that this is separate day or at least a separate challenge, or Rupert would still be holding onto the mask.   Top

They COULD have gone back to camp after the initial photos so Rudy and Rich pics could be in between the first meeting and the second meeting. Or not Either way, the picture of Rich with the mask (and again, please know I am a HUGE naysayer on assuming facial expressions mean a kiss of death or a yahoo, immunity won) does not really tell us anything. His expression could simply be an "expression" that got caught in mid express I still feel based on what we can see during the challenge, Saboga fares the worse. As of now, I'd rather look at the challenge pictures than anything else to see who may be going home first.   Top

Check out this picture: JP is unveiling the Immunity Idol at this same meeting. I do not think that JP would have the II present if there wasnt an IC immediately following. Furthermore, articles essentially state that they go into the IC just after meeting the competition. From TV guide: Soon they will compete in an immunity challenge that will force the losing tribe to give one of its members the boot. But first they get a chance to check out the competition I think that I am focussing in on the sequence of events because the set of pictures with the large MOGO MOGO banner, and the teams arriving from a grassy area look more likely from a different challenge, perhaps a different day. I wouldnt be surprised to see that this pic is from the RC challenge in EP2. My first inclination was to think that they would not let press have any access to the tribes in EP2, they always have them arrive for day 3. BUT, these pics are from the CBS website, something we have never had access to in prior seasons. So they could have easily placed EP2 challenge pics in the BTS video. If these shots are EP2 then the following people are safe from first boot: CHAPERA: Rob C Alicia Sue Tom Rob M MOGO MOGO: Lex Colby Jenna M (jenna is barely seen over left shoulder of lex in actual Video) and there is a person in a cap in background, not sure who that is SABOGA: Rupert Jenna L Ethan Rudy Jerri... in video her cowboy hat is seen over Rupert So missing from shots: AMBER TINA SHII ANN RICHARD KATHY I believe one of these 5 is our first boot. I think his tribe came up short. Putting these together seems to point to Richard going 1st. He wouldn't have been my choice, but only Ruperts comments at S7's reunion really makes me question the Richard goes 1st conclusion.   Top

It isnt that unusual as episode 2 pictures are often available early, which is why the first boot is generally well known beforehand (missing Peter from S4, TC shots in S5, etc.) I agree with your speculation though the Green Mogo Mogo banner definately looks like episode 2, and the longer we go without any visual evidence that that banner (which is obviously there for some reason) is part of the episode 1 quest for fire challenge the more likely it becomes that it is later in the game. -ICB leaning towards a Rich boot for a while... and still leaning   Top

This was posted by "UdUnWaN2MeSs" indicating his dad worked on ASS, but does not give any information, with this exception. Whether this is bunk or not, it seems like a reasonable description of the challenge. It would explain why we see Chapera resting in the background in the pic with Richard and Saboga still competing. Chapera could have their runner in the jungle and the rest of the team is taking a rest. "The players start off on a platform in the water..When they dive in they swim over to the raft. Each corner of the raft is locked to the ocean floor..On the raft is the first key..One person dives down and unlocks the locks..From there they swim with the raft to shore..They take their lit torches and light 1 torch..From their they travel about 50 feet..From there they have to go under an obstacle..Once they get up they light a second torch..Then they cotinue to a flag with their tribe name on it where one player will travel about 100 feet into the jungle and light another torch..They will come back and continue..They will keep going along a series about 2 more torches..THey will go into the woods..Light one more torch and continue along the beach in a final sprint with the raft to the finish line and light the last torch.. So my dad said thats pretty much what happens and that when you think 1 tribe is winning the next thing you know there in last place and in this challenge things changed like that.. "   Top

While we have seen vidcaps of the EP1 IC, I don’t think we have seen the finish line. MB likes a dramatic conclusion to his challenges and a “Quest for Fire” challenge would almost certainly have a huge fire feature at the finish. The original “Quest for Fire” described below had such a finish… "Quest for Fire: A symbolic race for fire held on the Sand Spit, an s-shaped sand bar located one mile off Pulau Tiga. The object was to alternately float and carry a cauldron of fire from a position 50 yards offshore to the finish line, which was delineated by a 20-foot high Fire Spirit. In addition, teams had to light a succession of torches between start and finish, with the winner being the first to light all their torches and the Fire Spirit." The Mogo-Mogo banner that has been discussed, may be part of the S8 version of the “Fire Spirit”… It looks as if there may be a primitive runged ladder leading up to the top of the structure. Each tribe probably has a similar structure with their tribe name on it. The last stage of the challenge may involve a member of the tribe climbing to the top of the structure to ignite the victory flame. This structure could also be a part of the EP2 Challenge, but in that case there must be some other dramatic fire feature that the tribes must light to win the “Quest for fire”.
