PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are
encouraged to read the
complete guidelines.
As entertainment critic Roger
Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

Let's see if I can actually write something of substance...1. Talked about how he he didn't like having to bail out the banks on wall street -- that no one liked it really, but it was needed to avoid the economy being even worse. 2. He wants the largest wall street companies who, since they can give themselves big bonuses, to give some of the taxpayers money back. 3. Talked about how there have been no increases in taxes, but in fact tax cuts for middle America

Perhaps I don't understand what you mean by "appeasing," but for months I have had the impression that Republicans wanted to be appeased, i.e. have the administration and Democrats in Congress bend to their will and take their ideas into account. And, for what it's worth, I found W, Dick, and Denny pretty condescending, smug, and arrogant --- and rarely, if ever, willing to work with the opposition party in ways that could be classified as either cooperating or appeasing. I guess that it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Or was that someone else? Anyway, I'm so glad I could come here instead of CNN. Let me give some highlights that I didn't read above in sufficient detail. Some of you were out getting more beer. We're getting serious about jobs and the economy now. Last year, the $787 billion, that apparently wasn't serious. Jobs. People need them. Yes. That would be good. Oh, wait, you covered that. We should be the first country on the planet to get this green thing right. We'll be rich. We'll lead the world. He has not raised anyone's taxes. Yet. Of course, our grandchildren and 60% of the income they will eventually earn has already been promised to China. It's ok if our bills oink. But we're going to post it online now. So there, nah nah. 89. "RE: Alito" |
Well, it wasn't true. As a former law professor, Obama should have known better. Here's what Obama said:"With all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests--including foreign corporations--to spend without limit in our elections. I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people. And I'd urge Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to correct some of these problems." The history part is nonsense, and you can't "pass a bill" to change the Constitution. Even far-left NYT legal writer Linda Greenhouse knows better: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/27/justice-alitos-reaction/ "The law that Congress enacted in the populist days of the early 20th century prohibited direct corporate contributions to political campaigns. That law was not at issue in the Citizens United case, and is still on the books. Rather, the court struck down a more complicated statute that barred corporations and unions from spending money directly from their treasuries--as opposed to their political action committees--on television advertising to urge a vote for or against a federal candidate in the period immediately before the election. It is true, though, that the majority wrote so broadly about corporate free speech rights as to call into question other limitations as well--although not necessarily the existing ban on direct contributions." But despite what the far left sees as the majority "writing broadly", it did not strike down or even attempt to strike down other provisions of the laws regulating contributions to candidates. The law that was struck down was one of those laws that has been widely circumvented through the use of PACs, as those of us who complained about misleading PAC names in the recent Massachusetts special election know. The fact that the SEIU couldn't directly run advertising urging a vote for Coakley didn't stop three different SEIU PACs from running ads urging such a vote. Basically, at this point, this is much ado about nothing. So far, however, I think the entire Obama presidency can be characterized that way. From what I heard, the tenor of his speech was that he wasn't about to compromise one inch from his far-left beliefs. That's fine, if he doesn't want to pass any legislation. Jefferson wrote, "That government which governs least governs best," and that may well be a summary of the Obama years.

93. "RE: Alito" |
A noted Supreme Court historian who “enthusiastically” voted for President Obama in November 2008 today called President Obama’s criticism of the Supreme Court in his State of the Union address last night “really unusual” and said he wouldn’t be surprised if no Supreme Court Justices attend the speech next year.“It was really unusual in my mind to see the president going after the Supreme Court in such a forum,” said author and Law Professor Lucas Powe, the Anne Green Regents Chair in Law, and a Professor of Government at the University of Texas-Austin School of Law. “I’m willing to bet a lot of money there will be no Supreme Court justice at the next State of the Union speech.” Added Professor Powe, who clerked for Supreme Court Justice William Douglas, “you don’t go to be insulted. I can’t see the Justices wanting to be there and be insulted by the president.” His opinion has nothing to do with animus towards the President, for whom Powe said he voted enthusiastically. President Obama took the apparently unprecedented step of assailing a Supreme Court decision in his speech last night, saying, “with all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that's why I'd urge Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that corrects some of these problems." http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/01/supreme-court-historian-after-presidents-insult-wont-be-surprised-if-supreme-court-doesnt-attend-next-year.html

I understand what Matthews was trying to say, but it was an awkward way to say it.I was trying to think about who he was tonight. It's interesting: he is post-racial, by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. You know, he's gone a long way to become a leader of this country, and passed so much history, in just a year or two. I mean, it's something we don't even think about. I was watching, I said, wait a minute, he's an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people. And here he is president of the United States and we've completely forgotten that tonight — completely forgotten it. I think it was in the scope of his discussion. It was so broad-ranging, so in tune with so many problems, of aspects, and aspects of American life that you don't think in terms of the old tribalism, the old ethnicity. It was astounding in that regard. A very subtle fact. It's so hard to talk about. Maybe I shouldn't talk about it, but I am. I thought it was profound that way. http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2010/01/28/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry6150964.shtml
