Oh I know, I lived in Calgary for three years in the 90's, and I used to describe what the dead of winter was like and people were like "nawww". I described how I was able to walk around in -25 weather with my jacket open because it was a dry cold compared to the humidity present in Southern Ontario. I remember getting snow one early morning - in August. By nine a.m., the snow was gone and it was up to 20 degrees C by noon, perfect timing to allow us to continue playing in a baseball tournament. I also remember the chinook days when it'd be +18 C in the middle of February, the day after being -30 degrees. Nothing beats going skiing through powder on a chinook day, wearing a T-shirt.   Top

"RE: Baby It's Cold Outside" It is supposed to arrive around noonish, and most of the closures I've heard of are West of here which should get the deepest snow. I think most of the schools start Winter Break on Monday, and that day before the break tends to be fairly useless anyway in terms of instruction. In cute school news (since there is no point trying to stuff info into the heads of the kids when their minds are not there) the local radio station did their breaking and entering Christmas today. They pick a family that is going through hard times through no fault of their own and get a boatload of stuff (some donated from local businesses and some they buy with money raised by the foundation that the Morning Radio guy runs to help kids). This family lost the Dad just before Thanksgiving and a few days before their 10th wedding anniversary. He has been working as a fireman for years so it was pretty easy to get a lot of community support for this one. Anyway they are across from the Elementary school and they let all the kids come out and stand along the fence by the road and cheer and sing when the family got snookered into coming back from whatever they used to get them out of the house at just the right time. At least the snow held off that long so the school got to do that and the B&E was pulled off. I am doing my part to try to make the snow just go away (or at least snow on someone else). I bought a snow shovel last night (go into Home Depot and ask the nice young guy at the door where they are, and they were right by the door) to replace the one that was borrowed and not returned last year. Then I spread some ice melt on the drive, sidewalk and steps so hopefully I won't have as much to shovel before I park the car, and maybe it won't be too stuck to the concrete. It sure looks like it could start snowing at any moment when I look out the window. Hopefully I got enough work done on the report I can bug out early.   Top

Well taking the shovel with me and putting down ice melt kept it mostly at bay until I got home. Car parked at the end of the driveway, nose out just as the flakes turned really big. Didn't have more than a few flakes on the way home so I got a nice break in the weather to drive home in and the pre-brined roads were clear. Although now I have that song "White Lines" stuck in my head because the brine is laid down in several narrow stripes when they apply it to the road. "Drive is shoveled out" Egad was that heavy. 2-3 inches of snow compacted and slushed down to about 3/4 of an inch by the sleet/freezing rain. Glad I got it up because if the temp drops that will become a glacier in a hurry. Looks like one person tried, and failed, to get up the hill. I did get the gutter in front of my house and the storm drain just up hill from me shoveled out. The pavement is warm enough there is a lot of melt underneath the slush layer just waiting to become an ice rink. Ah, someone made it up the hill just now. Of course as soon as I got mostly done with the drive it started snowing again. But I tossed out some ice melt so maybe I won't get enough to have to go back out, but at least I got the heaviest stuff up already. *pants* *collapses in a heap* I have lived in the South too long, I am way out of shape for snow shoveling   Top
