"Film too controvertial for the US"
Apparently this film gets really good reviews but because it is about such a hot topic it cannot get a distributor here in the USA.

Too much sex, too much violence, too much of what that the US public must be protected from at all costs?

Too.Much.Darwin.

It's about Charles Darwin, and so it must not be seen anywhere in the US. Can't even get the most amoral people in Hollywood to even try to make any money off it.

Would Netflix carry it as a foreign film or will it be completely banned before they get a chance?

I may be a self-deluded wide eyed idiot, but don't believe the 39% poll results, nor do I believe that this film will not find a US distributor.

It does depend on how you ask the question. Because you can ask it in a way that the we evolved but God made evolution have to say they don't believe in evolution.

I agree with you Kingfish - because every time the religious groups start foaming at the mouth crying "Blasphemy!" it pumps up the number of people who would have normally passed on the film, but who would then go see what all the fuss is about. The controversy would instantly assure this film made MONEY. LOL, someone will pick it up.

4. "Quick question."
Which country was run by the humorless religious dictatorship? I lost track.

5. "BS"
LAST EDITED ON 09-14-09 AT 02:36 AM (EST)

Once again people have been hoodwinked by a piece of BS. Come on, guys, smarten up!

Any movie can get a distribution deal. But the producer here doesn't just want a standard deal for an indie movie. He wants guarantees of the number of theaters to open, and a rollout strategy before he'll sell the film. He sees this film as an Oscar contender, and that's the kind of distribution deal he wants. In effect, what he wants is the kind of deal that Slumdog Millionaire got (or at least The Wrestler). Because BBC Films made the movie, he's in no hurry to sell it until he can get such a deal -- it's not like he has to recover the cost of production; the Beeb isn't hurting for cash.

The cynical part of this pitch is the claim by the producer that religious America doesn't want you to see this film, which is why there is no US distribution. It's certainly true that religious America doesn't want you to see this film. But there is NO connection between that and the lack of U.S. distribution. Heck, the company that's distributing it in the UK is Icon, which used to be owned by Mel Gibson until a couple of years ago. If a company built by creationist Mel is distributing it, do you think any American company is refusing to distribute it because of fear of creationists?

Sorry, group, but this is just old-fashioned Hollywood PR gimmickry in an attempt to make seeing this film into a "cause". I'm particularly sorry that some of you were predisposed to believe this BS. But it just proves what P.T. Barnum once said.

I can think of a few that would refuse from either that or fear of alienating their own buyer base, yes. Beyond that, I'm currently living in a country where roughly half the population is afraid of health care because they believe it'll lead to some demon entity known only as 'socialism'. Asking me to have faith in the intelligence of the American public is a stretch on any given day: doing it right now is pushing every boundary available.

Plus I was exhausted last night: got home, looked at the post, and skipped the article in favor of an hour-long bathtub soak. I'm not going to be reasonably Goldmanish without lots of bubble bath.
