smakitupflipit 29 desperate attention whore postings DAW Level: "Beauty Pageant Celebrity Judge" 04-08-04, 09:37 PM (EST) "What happened to Justin Guarini?" They faithfully trot out Clay, Kim, Ruben, Kelly, and now Tamyra to perform. Did Justin's destruction of unchained melody, which Clay did perfectly in the same episode, kill his momentum? I know his album wasn't the greatest (but I thought only Clay was up to snuff), but did he fall so far as to render himself the forgotten runner-up? Also, what happened to the third place girl from A1, i forget her name, but she had the pink hair?   Top

I think it might have to do with Justin not showing up for the Christmas special. I know he was dropped by RCA. That might have something to do with it. I liked his CD. I think RCA chose the wrong singles to promote. Justin said on Oprah that it was Clive Davis' idea for him to record "Unchained Melody". Justin didn't really want to do it but was talked into it. My favorite song on the CD in "Inner Child". I think Justin's CD is as good as any of the others he just didn't get the promotion from RCA. I love watching Justin perform. He is my all time favorite AI contestant.   Top

I thought he sounded great back during his season. I think he was kinda a novelty act though and once off the air...easily forgotten. It didn't help that they waited almost a year to release his and Kelly's albums. They're not gonna make that mistake again...strike while the irons hot and make that money you know? Anyway, he had his 15 minutes and no one seems to be interested anymore so they dont really expect that he's gonna do anything for ratings and I wouldn't count on seeing him on the show. I actually heard that he re-signed with someone else after he had been dropped. Who knows though? I don't know if he chose the wrong songs, I have always been skeptical of his singing ability. 19E still has Nikki McKibbin locked in a closet somewhere. I'm sure of it. They trot out the same footage of her singing in her karaoke bar every once in awhile, just to pretend to America that she's still alive and has "settled down" to her former life.   Top

"Dropped by 19 Productions" Not only was Justin dropped by RCA, but he was also dropped by Simon Fuller's 19 Productions. Thus, as far as I know, the only ex-Idols still under contract with 19 are Kelly, Tamrya, Clay and Ruben. Meanwhile, Kimberley, although not signed to 19, has managed to get a contract with Curb Records -- and it would be in AmIdol's best interests if one of the finalists who wasn't part of the 19 Productions group became a star. Nikki McKibbin dropped herself from RCA/19E. They signed her, but wanted her to be a country singer. She didn't want to do it so asked to be released from her contract. I say good for her, she would have put out a CD, it would have been awful like Justin's and she'd never had made it in the industry. She still might not make it, but at least she didn't have to sing something she didn't want to. 6th place finisher Christina Christian is performing on the results show this week.   Top

"Oops" Forgot about Christina in my post above. 19 signed five contestants from the first Idol (Kelly, Justin, Nikki, Tamyra and Christina) ... but only two from the second Idol (Clay and Ruben). As you noted, Nikki asked to be dropped, and 19 allowed her to leave (although, as I remember it, she always wanted to be a progressive country singer -- I can't imagine that 19 wanted her to sing straight Nashville). And, as I noted above, Justin has been dropped. 19 still has the others.   Top

I think Clay has the best chance, but he needs to eventually become Clay Aiken..singer, not "hey this is Clay from American Idol"...Kelly is too close to being an Aguilera clone, and Ruben is definitely not in the Luther Vandross/Barry White class, as they hoped he would land. Kurt, the ugly Norwegian Plumber from world Idol may outlast all of them internationally.   Top

If I remember this Rolling Stone article right, most pop stars only last two albums and they are considered "done". Kelly is working on her 2nd album now. Clay/Kelly tour are really strong, I think they'll last longer than two albums. Ruben may never hit peak popularity like Clay is in terms of sales, but people say he'll have longevity because R&B singers tend to have longer careers. He may not be a tour'er though since he already has had one or two shows cancelled due to lack of tickets... 5 years from now, I totally expect one of the AI rejects to make it big. We'll be like "Oh, that's what happened to Ryan Starr". Only a matter of time... Just read that R.J. is performing on the results show next week or the following week. Poor Nikki.   Top

I don't understand how anyone can say Justin failed because of lack of promotion from his record lable. I seem to recall Justin being shoved down our throats every time you turned on the TV. He was always singing some boring slow song or trying to look cute with his nappy hair and cheesy smile. He had to have performed at least 3 to 5 times on AI2 alone. He failed because his music isn't up to par. Simply that.   Top

I have no business posting here, since I've never even heard Justin sing, BUT... I recently read an article where he said that he hated most of the songs they gave him. He wanted to do a certain type of music, and they refused. That sort of thing can come though in a performance (or a bazillion performances), resulting in something sub-par being "shoved down our throats" a bazillion times. Musicians generally shine when they really love what they are doing. He says the deck was stacked against him. I don't know if that's true, but if he perceived it that way, then he was probably reacting to that perception.   Top

Did you buy the CD or are you just commenting on what you heard on TV? I bought the CD and I like it. I don't know who picked "Sorry" and "Unchained Melody" for his first singles but I have a feeling that Justin didn't have much say. There were better songs on the CD. My favorite was "Inner Child" although "Sorry" isn't any worse that Rueben's "Sorry 2004". I'm not some crazed teenager either. I'm 42, happily married with a child and I love Justin.   Top
