"OTBC Summer 2009"
It's that time of year again. Time for lazing around the pool, beach or backyard and reading a good book.

If you would like to host a book this summer please let us know what book here. I'll come up with a schedule when we have all the books suggested. Last year I think we had two weeks per book for discussion, which worked well. If you feel your book needs more time, just let me know and I'll schedule it out longer.

Thanks!

I would like to host Fade. I've already read it (as I know many of you have) but we should schedule it so that peeps who haven't can still read it and participate. How about Thursday?

I will defer the scheduling to Breezy.

I hosted Wake last summer and it was fun (even if I got Janie's name wrong as Jodie at first!).

I don't know how much time I'll have in the coming weeks (with a trip to Malaysia in the works), but if I'm around while you host Fade, I'll be looking forward to it!

4. "RE: OTBC Summer 2009"
I was just thinking about OTBC the other day! I'm glad to see that it is back this summer.

I would like to host Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein.

This book has caused me to think differently about how I do my job and other decisions I make in my professional life and personal life.

"How often do you read a book that is both important and amusing, both practical and deep? This gem of a book presents the best idea that has come out of behavioral economics. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to see both our minds and our society working better. It will improve your decisions and it will make the world a better place." -Daniel Kahneman, Princeton University, Nobel Laureate in Economics

Putting theory into practice: I think that the authors would agree that I just provided a nudge of my own by including a link rather than expecting peeps to search for the book on another site. The nudge does not force anybody to open the link, but it does increase the probability that a larger number of peeps will learn more about the book. (And, yes, I did "preview" to make sure that the link works. Well, it does on my computer...)

Argh! Usually it is Boner who crabs that my links do not work --- which I why I previewed and tested the link. Anyway, here are two links; hopefully one will work with whatever computer and browser combination you use.

one /
Nudge

two //
Nudge

Both worked for me, but I'll remember to do just one / in the future if that universally works...

Do you like lots of hair and what did you think about the morphing scene?

Richard or Jean-Claude?

Was the fight scene overdone or do you think The Pythia was a wimp?

etc....

I haven't read the last few books in that series. It just went too far off track for me and I missed the early Anita too much. But having transferred my affection to the Kim Harrison books I find that I'm missing a strong male role. I'm never satisfied am I?

I used to read (and enjoy) the Anita Blake books, too. At some point, the books became more about what kind of sex with what kind of creatures Anita could have, though, and all other plot went out the window. I like reading sex, but oddly, I sorta want a plot, too. And the proofreading/editing seemed to get worse, too. Maybe the editors were too hot and bothered...

I think I read thru her 3rd to last book in the bookstore. I just skipped all the sex parts, not because I don't like some sex in my stories but it all started to be the same. It took me about 20 minutes to read anything that had anything to do with plot.

I was fine with the Meridith Gentry books being sexcentric, it fit the character. But she completely changed Anita's character.

Yeah, I agree, it did become just one big orgy for several books. But I've stuck it out, and the last two books have shown a glimmer of a plot, and I have hope that the next one (that comes out in a week) will have even more of a return to what it used to be.

Hey, it could happen.

ETA: from a reader's review on Barnes and Noble:
SKIN TRADE is the best Blake urban fantasy in several years as the story line is a throwback to the earlier supernatural detective thrillers. Sex is limited instead of dominating and what there is enhances the storyline instead of owning the plot. Fascinatingly except for Edward there is no direct appearance of any other recurring support character as Anita using her brain more than her brawn and struggles with being the foci of the Vegas paranormal community.

Is there any reason that the books have to be done consecutively rather than concurrently? Couldn't two books from different genres be scheduled for the same three-week (or more) period?

I don't know. I was trying to take into account Boo's concerns about time constraints (and my own, which have prevented me from being involved with OTBC as much as I might like).

You probably have a better sense than I do about how many peeps read every book --- but here's my thinking: Many people might not be able to read a book in two weeks. They might like to read Book A in three weeks. And they might not have much interest in Book B. Rather than have them discuss no books in a two-week period, there might be better discussion if they had a chance to read one (of two) books in a three-week period.

Or, I like some but not all of the books that have been suggested this year and in previous years, but time will keep me from reading some of them that look good this year. I am more likely to participate in more discussions if I can have more time to do the reading ... and it won't bother me not to read and discuss other books that might be scheduled for the same time as a book I am reading. At least I would have the chance to participate in some (rather than none) of the discussions.

Sure, I can help if you like.

You zeroed in on the shortcoming of my suggestion. People who want to read both books scheduled for a particular period would either have to read them simultaneously or choose only one to read. (No schedule is ideal.)

It depends on the book. I can keep that schedule all summer. When work and real life get busy, that becomes more of another "job" for me.

I think it works for everyone, I just can't do it. But I'm not as much of an avid reader as others.
