4. "RE: OTBC Summer 2009" |
I was just thinking about OTBC the other day! I'm glad to see that it is back this summer.I would like to host Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein. This book has caused me to think differently about how I do my job and other decisions I make in my professional life and personal life. "How often do you read a book that is both important and amusing, both practical and deep? This gem of a book presents the best idea that has come out of behavioral economics. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to see both our minds and our society working better. It will improve your decisions and it will make the world a better place." -Daniel Kahneman, Princeton University, Nobel Laureate in Economics Putting theory into practice: I think that the authors would agree that I just provided a nudge of my own by including a link rather than expecting peeps to search for the book on another site. The nudge does not force anybody to open the link, but it does increase the probability that a larger number of peeps will learn more about the book. (And, yes, I did "preview" to make sure that the link works. Well, it does on my computer...) "We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all our citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization." --- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 9 January 1940

Anyway, here are two links; hopefully one will work with whatever computer and browser combination you use.one / Nudge two // Nudge Both worked for me, but I'll remember to do just one / in the future if that universally works... I used to read (and enjoy) the Anita Blake books, too. At some point, the books became more about what kind of sex with what kind of creatures Anita could have, though, and all other plot went out the window. I like reading sex, but oddly, I sorta want a plot, too. And the proofreading/editing seemed to get worse, too. Maybe the editors were too hot and bothered...

Yeah, I agree, it did become just one big orgy for several books. But I've stuck it out, and the last two books have shown a glimmer of a plot, and I have hope that the next one (that comes out in a week) will have even more of a return to what it used to be.

I don't know. I was trying to take into account Boo's concerns about time constraints (and my own, which have prevented me from being involved with OTBC as much as I might like). You probably have a better sense than I do about how many peeps read every book --- but here's my thinking: Many people might not be able to read a book in two weeks. They might like to read Book A in three weeks. And they might not have much interest in Book B. Rather than have them discuss no books in a two-week period, there might be better discussion if they had a chance to read one (of two) books in a three-week period. Or, I like some but not all of the books that have been suggested this year and in previous years, but time will keep me from reading some of them that look good this year. I am more likely to participate in more discussions if I can have more time to do the reading ... and it won't bother me not to read and discuss other books that might be scheduled for the same time as a book I am reading. At least I would have the chance to participate in some (rather than none) of the discussions. "We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all our citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization." --- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 9 January 1940

I may ask for you help with the scheduling though? Please? I'm just trying to wrap my brain about how I would schedule it and in a way that peeps would get to read the ones they really wanted to read. I know part of my problem with this is that I read fast, so my time table may be off.
