I'm with Estee on this one. It's a beauty pageant, not a discussion for the Nobel Prize, so give the politically-correct answer in a semi-articulate fashion and move on.

After working for 5 years in the Miss America system (please do not confuse us with USA), I can say that is just flat wrong. The judges should be instructed that their job is to get to know the girls and see their character. Someone who would like to get the crown has no business winning.Judges are not to be opinion-makers nor are they supposed to judge a contestant on their political views. These girls are not running for political office. A tough, political question reveal character - not qualification. And Miss California demonstrated that in spades when she answered a tough question from a hostile judge. If anything it should have elevated her scores. FTR, none of the many gays on the pageant board disagree. They think that the attitude, professionalism and qualification of Mr. Hilton are highly dubious. Hobbes is 100% correct. Perez should not have been a judge and he failed in his responsbility to judge by the standard set by the guidelines, which are explicit in directing not to judge a contestant on their personal opinions. SIDE NOTE: If you are curious about the differences between USA and America, the main one is that Miss America is the world's largest scholarship organization for women and all the participant at almost every level get some monies for college. USA is a modeling and beauty pageant (which makes this politicization even more pointless), and the winner gets clothes, modeling and acting lessons and various prizes. Also, MA requires a talent whereas USA does not have a talent portion in the competition. Finally, interview and talent account for approximately 705 of MA scores. I believe that interview is 20% in USA. A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

PRE, thank you for the clarification between Miss America and Miss USA. I've learned something, which is always a good thing. However, I think you inadvertently confirmed my point: USA is a modeling and beauty pageant (which makes this politicization even more pointless), and the winner gets clothes, modeling and acting lessons and various prizes. As a "modeling and beauty pageant", the Miss USA winner's job is to stand around looking pretty, and making polarizing political statements goes against that job description. Also, MA requires a talent whereas USA does not have a talent portion in the competition. Finally, interview and talent account for approximately 70% of MA scores. I believe that interview is 20% in USA. As you noted, this pageant is not about talent. Being bluntly honest, nobody involved with this pageant cares if Miss USA can think or not, unlike the Miss America pageant with its talent and interview sections. It's a beauty contest, for crying out loud.

I never have understood why certain people get to be the judges of the major pageants on TV other than they are DAW's and people will know their name when they are introduced.Heard this on the radio, yesterday, the full clip. She did seem to have a glitch in the chip when asked this question. They oops I don't have the prepared script for this what are those talking point key words again? Choice, that's it choice! Throw that in, doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense in the context I am using it. I like the opposite marriage. Way to make straight marriage sound like the one that isn't supported by society. Oops gotta end with the definition of marriage. I'd rather see her state what her real opinion is, and she did better than that map question girl from awhile back. However, at least try to put together real sentences next time. She does seem in some of the post interviews to think she lost the crown because of what she believes in, and she might have lost it if she actually was articulate about her views, but sounding like a dolt on top of sounding bigoted really didn't help.

*dips toe into potential deep end*The way I see it is the girl had to answer the question somehow and I think she used the actual quesiotn as a catalyst to illustrate the fact that the US is a free and democratic country. She was stating that she was happy and proud to be part of a country that, in part, would allow gay marriage regardless of which side of the fence she was on. Heck, the question didn't even have to be about gay marriage. It could have been about any controversial topic of the day. I think her point was to praise a free and democratic society. Was it executed properly? Probably not. Could have been a little better. Just my .02 *dries off toe*

I saw this live, and the first thing out of my mouth was that she just blew it. I am impressed that she was honest about her answer, but it really was a dumb answer because she didn't keep in mind who was JUDGING her when she made her remarks. I've seen plenty of these pagents, and I don't care what anybody says, these women typically talk in very rehearsed, politically correct speak. I've never seen any "live interview" answer that was not a whole bunch of rehearsed BS. I don't know what she expected given the panel of judges they had. She should have done enough homework on them to tell them what they wanted to hear, if she wanted to win. She was doing fine until she went down the "no offense, but.." path. Clearly, she was trying to offend, and she did, and she lost. Stupid mistake.

Given the division on this issue, don't you think that there is a very real possibility she could have offended other judges with the opposite answer? You just can't please them all and it's pointless to try. That is why I tell my girls to always answer honestly, thoughtfully and senstively with respect for other POVs. For example, if one of our titleholders got this question and they opposed gay marriage, they would probably say that they believe gay couples should have the same rights as married couples, they should be able to visit a sick partner in bed or transfer property when they pass; they should be protected under the law. But they personally believe that marriage is intended for one man, one woman and there should be civil unions or similar protections for the rights of gay couples, their health and their property. Again, the girl should not be judged on the opinion she expresses, rather on the way that she expresses it.

Given the division on this issue, don't you think that there is a very real possibility she could have offended other judges with the opposite answer?Yes! But, my problem with her answer was that she obviously didn't do her homework on what the judges wanted to hear. If she wanted to WIN this competition, she should have answered in a way that would not offend these particular judges. You just can't please them all and it's pointless to try. I disagree, she was on the right track initially, but then she said "no offense...blah blah blah." She should have stopped before she went on to give what she must know is a NO WIN answer! The point of women entering pagents has always been to win. These women are heavily coached on how to answer these type questions. Miss California deviated from the politically correct pagent speak script. That's why it cost her. Again, the girl should not be judged on the opinion she expresses, rather on the way that she expresses it. Wrong. The "girl" is not supposed to give political or religious opinions! She is supposed to dance around the topic and give some nonsense PC answer. I've seen enough of these things to know that they never directly answer anything. ever.

Frankly, it was a stupid question to ask.I mean, by asking such a question, you're practically eliminating anyone with conservative politics on the issue. She could have phrased her answer differently, but (considering Mr. Hilton) I doubt it would've done her much good. Her only choice was to lie about her beliefs and be a phony about it. If they wanted to ask a question where contestants can give an intelligent, well-thought out response, they picked a poor one. Something like this is too opinion-based. If they gave a question about, say, the war on terrorism... Even if the judges don't agree with her stance, she could back up her answer with a logical argument that supports it. It's a little tougher with a topic like gay marriage. While I don't agree with her viewpoint, it was clear that she was stuck between a rock and a hard place. A 2003 IceCat original
