However, that has not proven to be the case. If anything, things are getting worse. I just want to alert the board that the moderator team has agreed to ban two of the current posters. We expect to implement this ban during March, although we have some technical steps to accomplish first. (Please do not ask for the identity of the posters, but I don't think anybody would be shocked.) We hate to ban people, which is why we do it so rarely, and I think we all would prefer if everyone just found a way to keep debates on the issues instead of turning them into personal feuds. I speak only for myself here, but I love to read the range of opinions that people here have. Can't we preserve that range without the cuss words and the personal attacks? Thank you for your time and for your cooperation. Edited: Actually, I believe three of the current posters were banned, from both sides of the political spectrum. All three had been the target of frequent complaints. My apologies for misstating the number.

Very well said, AyaK. I agree with your sentiments concerning the difficulty of moderating a community such as this one. The range of interests present here are varied greatly, from reality shows, to gaming shows, and from sports lovers, to general topics.I like to browse many different subjects; reality, food, sports, games, current events, movies, and many others. I don't always have something to say, I just read and contemplate. I have changed several opinions of mine just by reading the people of these forums. Much thanks to the moderators for keeping things on track as much as possible. I am sorry that bans had to take place so this could be sorted out. I hope that those who are here will continue to participate as usual.

Before the election, we moderators reminded posters of the community guidelines and asked folks to remember how to treat their fellow OTers as they posted. We just wanted to remind you to follow a few simple rules:
- Debate the opinion vs. bash the person posting the opinion.
- Bypassing the filter repeatedly to direct obscenities at other posters is not appropriate.
- Do not abuse the alert system by insulting or threatening the moderators or by using it to perpetuate a personal vendetta against another poster.We have been paying attention, and we have taken action. And yes, that action does mean that some posters will no longer be allowed to post here. It is a shame that things had to get to this point, and we sincerely hope that we do not have to repeat this action in the future. These bans were not done lightly, and those who are no longer here had plenty of opportunities to save themselves before this drastic measure was required. We'd much rather join in the fun than have to play bad cop. Let's all just go back to enjoying each others' company and treating each other with respect.

Nevertheless, we are aware that some people that are still here have made very inflammatory posts on occasion that go well beyond such innocuous posts. No one that is still here will be suspended without further incidents, but that doesn't mean that we've forgotten what went before.

Hobbs, forest fires and drive-by postings were very much taken into consideration. Based on the three who are gone, I very much suspect you're going to see far fewer attempts to start forest fires, not just because people will be warier, but also because the three were the lead fire-starters.

First of all, I'd like to thank the mods for keeping this place friendly and fair. I do appreciate the work you do.Next, I want to say I am quite saddened by this news since, although I do not know for sure, I am guessing about one person in particular and I know am going to miss the posts and information and ideas shared by this person. I sure wish that it didn't have to come to this -- but that being said, I also do trust that people were given more than one opportunity to step back behind the yellow tape and conform to the guidelines in order to keep playing here. Although a part of me wants to hope that they will toe the line and will be given another chance, based on what you've written, I assume they have already exhausted their "one more chance" options. Basically, I think if the choice came down to prohibiting any political threads vs. banning posters who are constantly making the political threads problematic, I'd have to pick the banishment option. *sigh* Thank you again mods, for the time and effort you must put into to dealing with these issues in order to keep our campsite on the happy side. I agree.
It sad to lose anyone, but I think most of us understand why the rules have to be enforced. I think we trust our Mods to make the best choice for the community.
If it comes down to a choice between the forum, and some members, I will always choose the forum, even if it is someday me.
Because the community survives, it changes as it's voices change, but it adapts and benefits the next group.I think we all know when we've stepped on the line and we all know who steps over it. (Except for Frisky, because she doesn't read those threads, *smile*)
Even with the current issues, I think the board is better than it has been in some times past. I know our Mods are looking out for us as a whole, and that they didn't make these decisions lightly, they made them for the good of OT.

Some years back, '97 to '03, I created and moderated an IRC madlib game channel. The bot would come up with some stock phrases with blanks left open that could lead to some snarky and humorous answers by the players, who voted for each others' answers to get points. Fun game and a fun community.Our downfall was a preponderance of IRC users who wouldn't abide by PG-13/R rules for the #madlib IRC channel. It got to the point where we had to ban entire IP domains to keep them off-channel and some of them knew how to hack a 'nuke' or disconnect to force the bot and/or players off the channel. It was fun while it lasted, though, for nearly six years! (There's quite a bit of personal history behind all this, and more to be found on google.)  So, I appreciate what issues you mods have to deal with in a community like ours. Rules are rules, given by those who create and manage all of this as communities form on the many forums. To you mods, thanks for taking your personal time, time you could use to do many other things, to care for our communities, as reluctant as you are to ban users (aside from the recurrent trolls!), particularly posters who are known amongst the community. I admit that I can sometimes feel very emotional about some issue or situation. I know it's easy to post with the adrenalin flowing, so it's not unusual for me (and by admission, some others of us) to draft some post and then decide not to post it after all. During these times, I ask myself, what is it that is causing strong emotions within me? No need to apologize for anything, even the numbers.

However, I have to admit I've refrained from lurking in those threads in the past year because of how quickly they tend to turn ugly. We have some very good debaters here who are both insightful and respectful. We've also had some who border on trolldom (the firestarters) and others who just don't care about the rules. I don't learn anything from them, because I can't see past the attitude to understand their point of view. The danger is that their hostility can rub off on you a bit. Your back instinctively rolls up, and your mind closes to anything they're trying to say. It's too bad we have to have "rules" to prevent that sort of thing, because you would hope that people would just innately be civil toward one another. But they aren't. I don't find the rules constraining. I think they encourage civility. I know people who pride themselves on "speaking their mind" as if it's some great brave asset worthy of my admiration. Maybe so, but when it's not tempered with respect, tolerance, kindness and the manners your parents (should have) taught you, it's about as admirable as a fluffy, plume-like tail on a barn cat that has to sleep amongst the cow patties to keep warm. How you say something tells me more about you than what you're saying, you know? {/Sunday musings}

Back in the early days of this board, there were three moderators, of which group I'm the only one left. One of the other moderators approached me and told me that the third moderator was engaging in inappropriate conduct using this site (even all these years later, I don't want to talk about what was going on). Webby and I had a series of private discussions and decided that we had to seal off the problem before we could even confront the third moderator. So we removed this person's access ... and we managed to contain the problem. Since then, we have followed the approach that we do not give notification of terminations, even though we have never had another problem of that magnitude on this board. We have debated changing that policy, but we would rather spend what time we have on the people that are here, rather than on the people who have demonstrated by their actions that they don't care about being here.

I think that there is, in people's minds or through PMs, a lot of posters names being bandied about and potentially maligned as the 'culprits'. I suppose over time, we will figure it out, but I stopped spoiling seasons ago. Thanks to the mods for all you do. This is, without a doubt, one of the most civil and constructive message boards on the web. We could not have this playground without the work that you do. Again, forgive my impertinence if my question is improper.

I also don't want to discuss what warnings have and haven't been given to people. But it's not a secret. As far as the bandying of names, I can lock the thread and end the discussion. Or we could have posted nothing at all. Would that help?

Like Bebo, I'd like to confess something. This is, by far, the worst, and hardest, part of being a Blue Peep.This place has become a home for me, and the peeps here are very much as members of my own family. Heck, in full truth, the support I've received from peeps here has far outdone anything my IRL family has done--I didn't even get Christmas cards from them. These peeps, at least 2 of them, were--are?--, friends of mine. I don't like it when my friends are hurt, or hurting. But, I like it even less when, in spite of repeated warnings and cautions my friends continue to behave in ways that can only ensure that they will be hurt, and do so in a manner in which I will have to participate in causing their pain. These people are articulate, well-informed, adults with a full command of the English language and a well developed understanding of choice and consequences. I have to believe that they fully understood the eventual consequences of the routes they chose--to think otherwise diminishes their intelligence. For things to have culminated as they have--given the clarity of the rules and the numerous warnings and signposts issued by me, and by all of the other mods--the continued behavior had to be a conscious decision. I don't know why they made that decision; I'm sorry that they did. But, choice it was. And, given the clarity of the warnings I can only believe that they wanted, for whatever reason, to push things to this point. That's a shame, imo, but they repeatedly made their choice so clear that there really wasn't much I, or the other mods, could do but let them obtain what they were so ardently pursuing.

Do you think it's a good idea to start posting quotes from blogs here? Especially from someone who is not a member any longer.This is from the blog of one of the people who got banned: I understand that is is probably pertinenet to the discussion, but it makes me very uncomfortable. I for one keep my blog separate from this forum, I have never posted a link here ( though some do for theirs and if that is their want, it's great). I don't mind people reading my blog, I don't mind people from here reading my blog, but it's not the property of this forum. I wouldn't want someone to take quotes from my blog and post them here without my knowledge. I think that quoting from someone's blog is in kinda bad form.
Like posting a PM without permission, it feels similar to me.
Also the fact that you say this came from one of the recently banned members, well we don't know what context it was in, and they can't exactly post to explain themselves either. Were you given permission to quote them here without naming them? And here is another thought, the moderators thought best that this person no longer post their words on this board, so why would we want their words on this board, no matter where they came from?
Should I be able to post from private emails of banned members what they want to say to the board? I think not. Maybe others see this differently than I do, I've been wrong before and I am sure I will be again, but it strikes me as innapropriate.

I think you should have discussed the PM with the person you recieved the PM from, or the mods if you felt it was cause for concern.
The more I think about it, the more I think that bringing it to the boards is really innapropriate since you also discuss a PM from a member.Of course I'm not a Moderator, and it is entirely up to them if they think this is okay. I just wanted to voice my opinion on taking a quote from someone's private blog and posting it on the boards in this way.

I can't imagine why moi would come to mind when the subject of banning came up, but I'm still here.  Last week, our family took our annual Spring Break trip to Cozumel for snorkeling, reading on the beach and margarita consumption. Now I'm back tanned, happy and mentally able to make it through the end of winter here in western Wisconsin. And just to make Ante jealous, I brought back six 950ml bottles of Herradura Reposada tequila at $22/bottle.  I was saddened to discover that we had lost 3 members of our community while I was gone. I don't know who exactly we lost, but I do not question that the mods gave them ample warning before taking such drastic action. I know that it could not have been an easy decission on their parts. I will always be grateful for our playground monitors. I've played on other sandlots that are not so well monitored and they are never as much fun as it is here. Still I'm sorry to lose folks to "banning". I kind of feel that if some people here were more thick skinned or less petty, that they might be less likely to hit the alert button and more of us might still be around, but that is just IMHO. I'm guessing that one of the 3 is Geg. If true, I'm very sorry as I always considered her to be a friend. Her arguments were always well stated and backed up with facts. She may have on occassion, been overly passionate in her discussions, but WTF, I've always been attracted to passionate women.  Geggy, if you're gone and you read this, know that I'll tip a glass of good Burgundy in your honor tonight. *smooch*

Hi AyaK and everyone ... long time no check OT and I see this ...Shakes was banned, and I missed it!
I remember well the turmoil AyaK spoke of (and no, I will not name names, but it gave me some gray hairs, so I can imagine how the mods felt). I made a lot of mistakes, including being sympathetic to a poster who got banned a bit after that. Looking back, I am sorry I did and amazed at myself ... there was a lot of manipulation going on and I should have just stayed totally out of the drama. No one has ever asked me about my not so technically snazzy sig pic, but it has a significance to me. It's a photo I took while on the ferry between the Aran Islands and Doolin ... a rough passage over the North Atlantic ... and there was this life preserver for the ferry, The Tranquility, juxtaposed against the waves ... I enjoyed the irony ... but now it's my sig pic because Tranquility can carry me over the rough seas ... that and not getting involved in factions ... although I've yet to master that one. I don't envy the mods. So much work ... these squabbles must be sort of like living through Groundhog Day, over and over, hoping to make a difference.
