*grumble* *raspberry* *rhubarb*My laptop has decided to crash today. I turned it over to the Geek Squad, and they said that it'll be 2-3 weeks before I'd be able to get it back. The stoopid thing locked up, and after I shut it off, it refused to come back on. It only got to the first screen and then reset. They're saying there could be anything wrong with the thing. The only consolation that I have is that it's today and not next month. I bought this thing on Groundhog Day 2007, with a 2-year service plan. Today begins the final month of that service plan, which includes replacement if necessary. The only thing I paid for is for data backup, since I don't want to lose what I got on the stupid thing this time, if at all possible. Still, though, what a bad start.

At least you have that service plan, so after waiting the 2-3 weeks you'll get a laptop back without having to pay anything. Still, broken computers stink regardless of who foots the bill.DW's laptop has several intermittent faults, which are very annoying in their own right. For example, her ethernet connector is so wonky that she convinced me to buy and set up a wireless router just so she doesn't have to deal with the connector. (This happened after she got fed up with intermittent connections a while back and hauled the laptop to the Geek Squad, only to have their on-site tech plug it up and triumphantly show her the ESPN homepage on his first connection.) The screen also periodically goes dark-- not standby mode-- with the only remedy being to hold the power button down until the thing shuts off, then deal with Vista's whining about improper shutdown when it's turned back on. *sigh* I feel your pain. Boy can I relate!Just before Xmas my computer got hit with Spyware Guard 2008 (a little Xmas present from Russia). When I tried to enter my Safe Mode it blocked me and locked up. When I tried to run my security system it wouldn't open. It wouldn't open any Microsoft site. I got some removal tools from another computer but when I tried to run them my computer locked up. Eventually it infected everything and I couldn't get my computer to turn on without it locking up. I finally called the Geek Squad. If I brought it in and left it with them for 2 weeks, they could back up my files and fix it for $200. However there was the chance that the $200 fix might not work. Then they would have to go to the $360 fix. In the end I bought a new hard drive, my BIL installed it, reinstalled all my software and moved all my safe files to the new drive. I have spent the past two days updating everything and I'm finally back in business. Actually, I still don't have any sound and I'm not sure why, but I'll get it sooner or later. #@$*&% Russian bastages!

I surfed to a site that gave me three different trojans the week before Christmas (including one that was pornography related. I wish I could remember which one - I'm pretty sure it was an entertainment & gossip site I accessed through AOL!) I probably could have kept on using the computer to fix the problem but was worried about also infecting the other computers in our house on our network. My virus software detected it immediately but couldn't delete it.Thank goodness for teen-age boys. DS and a friend got all my files off my computer and then reformated it and reinstalled everything. I didn't lose much except for six weeks of Quicken info that wasn't backed up. Unfortunately I used some software (Libra) to manage three different libraries on itunes and we didn't back that up. I still have all my music but it's all in one now. Libra has changed drastically since I downloaded it originally. Anyone have any suggestions for managing three ipods with one library? I feel your pain Vince. I was only without a computer for a few days and it drove me nuts.
