"Art vs Crazy" |
I found this article in the Yale newspaper. Seems an art student, for her senior project in Art, chose to do a very personal exhibit. Warning, very disturbing content. http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/24513 No matter your feelings about reproductive rights, unarguably this unfortunate woman has had a break with reality. I found it particularly perplexing that it states: The "fabricators," or donors, of the sperm were not paid for their services, but Shvarts required them to periodically take tests for sexually transmitted diseases. How efficient of you. spring siggy by tribe

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 04:38 PM (EST)This "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be." is where I would have to make the choice between turning my back on her or potentially facing assault charges. My fists are clenching from reading that: I don't want to imagine my reaction if she'd said it directly to me.

From Newsbusters:http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2008/04/17/yale-students-abortion-art-claim-scam As a two miscarriage veteran, this is pretty impossible. Not totally, but not this simple. Number 1, the "turkey baster" thing is not effective enough to work consistantly for 9 months. Number 2, you can't always get pregnant right away after a miss...and whatever "drugs" she was taking aren't going to cause a miss over and over. Science isn't THAT simple. Number 3, a natural miss (w/ no DNC) can take up to a month+ to be complete (I know this from experience, unfortunately). Again, you have to complete the miss and wait for another cycle. And finally, for the first several weeks of pregnancy, there is not enough tissue to create any more "mess" (for lack of a better word) than a normal, albeit slightly heavy, period cycle. This chick is lying! And more than a little crazy. If this whole thing was done to watch the media scramble..wouldn't it be a better fit for a journalism class?

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 08:43 PM (EST)The exhibit will be on public display from April 22 to May 1 at Yale's Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall. Shvarts will be honored at a reception April 25. What an honorable person. On the other hand, if it isn't a person, what difference does it make? Why should anybody find this disgusting?

On the other hand, if it isn't a person, what difference does it make? Why should anybody find this disgusting?KeithFan, Although you and I do not agree on the issue of reproductive rights, I do understand the strong objections that you (and PRE and Rudy and others) have to abortion. As a proponent of reproductive rights, I would like abortion to be safe, legal, and rare. I find this artwork disgusting for a couple of reasons. First, it makes a mockery of my own beliefs. I do not believe that this artist has a medical degree, so I am not going to take her word for it that her procedure was indeed harmless to her body. And this can in no way be considered rare. Although she may claim artistic merit, this seems like abortion merely for the sake of abortion. It completely undermines the arguments in favor of reproductive rights that I find legitimate (and I realize that you do not see all of them as legitimate). She in no way advances a position in favor of responsible reproductive rights. In addition, this seems to be a calculated attempt to insult and upset those who are pro-life. The people I know who support reproductive rights are not pro-abortion although they are pro-choice (and you have participated in enough conversations on this issue here that you understand the nuance, even if you do not agree with the distinction). This artwork completely distorts that position and it seems like a deliberate "frack you" to the pro-life community when it comes to a complex and emotionally charged issue. But to me, it's taking the pro-choice argument to it's natural conclusion. I realize not everyone sees it that way, but I think that a lot of people that consider themselves pro-choice, and yet are appalled by this lady really need to reflect on why they are so on the issue. Not to get too long-winded here, or to pick any fights, but I think humans inherently know it is wrong, and we spend way too much effort looking for reasons to make it not so to justify convenience (for the most part). As always, YMMV.

The way I see it, abortion has been around as long as there has been unwanted pregnancies. But, back in those days women went to the butcher, so to speak. Or, if you were wealthy, dad always had a doctor friend who'd "get rid of it" for a couple bucks. We've all heard the stories.Roe V Wade gave women, who chose the abortion route, the opportunity to have the procedure in a clean, safe environment. By an certified doctor. Don't believe that every woman who chooses this option does it by THEIR choice either. It's not that black and white. Having an abortion, at this stage in my life, is not something I would do. But, if I was an unwed 15 year old, or raped or a victim of incest...who knows? Regardless, making abortion illegal isn't going to make it go away. First of all, it will go back to the states, and your conservative states may make it illegal, but your liberal states (like NJ) will keep it legal. Second, women who want (or are forced to have) abortions aren't going to have the babies anyway. They'll go underground, just like before and alot of opportunists will profit. Don't be naive enough to think it's going to end abortion as we know it. What this girl did (or didn't?) do is quite crazy and makes no sense. But that doesn't mean I am going to abandon my belief that women deserve better than back alleys and med school dropouts!

I couldn't quite figure out what you were addressing in my post...As for the state issue; fine- that's the way it supposed to be, and Roe was one of the worst judgments in modern history, even pro-choicers that have any Constitutional knowledge will agree. What this girl did (or didn't?) do is quite crazy and makes no sense. But that doesn't mean I am going to abandon my belief that women deserve better than back alleys and med school dropouts! Why? What's the difference? Why do you see one as ok and not the other? Could it be (gasp!) that what she may have done is wrong?

Because there is a HUGE difference between choosing the abortion option to end an unwanted pregnancy, whatever the reasons may be, and getting pregnant with the sole intent to abort it.No logical person wakes up and says "Hey, it's Monday, it's cloudy out..so I think I'll go borrow some sperm, load up the turkey baster, get pregnant, abort it and make an art project!" This is a world away from someone who finds themself in a tough position and has to make tough choices. Totally different. I don't think I said what this girl did was WRONG, she can do what she pleases with her body, just NUTS. What sane person does this for a grade? Not every woman who terminates a pregnancy is the town whore who just doesn't feel like having a baby..it's much more complex. In truth, this crazy "project" just minimizes the pain people go through. AND gets the right sides panties in a big giant twist!

25. "It's an "official" hoax" |
This is from the Yale newspaper:*Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman's body. She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art. Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.*
