Reality TV World Message Board Forums
PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats, but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are encouraged to read the complete guidelines. As entertainment critic Roger Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

Name 'em, explain 'em, and quote 'em. I want to create an iPod that can induce suicide at twenty paces.

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 07:00 AM (EST)

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Wildfire (about the pony) are two that come to mind. Oh and Don't Take The Girl by Tim McGraw. Lots o' death in those three.

"Don't Take The Girl" makes me tear up just at the title. "Wildfire"... yep. I haven't read the rest of the thread yet but I would add "Feed Jake" and "Put the Bone In" (a dog bone, perverts).

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. Gets me every time since he wrote it after the death of his son.

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,

Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

I hate this song - why is he dying, why couldn't he die before he wrote and sang this?

The flip side of the 45 rpm was a song called "Put The Bone In." Pretty racey stuff for the '70s, eh?

Actually, it was a song about burying the dead family dog, and the kid asked his dad to put the dog's favourite bone in the hole along with the carcass.

Geez...Terry Jacks must've lived in a very, very dark basement apartment or something.

Naah, but he was getting divorced. He and his wife Susan had been the leaders of the successful Canadian band "Poppy Family", which had a US hit with "Which Way You Going, Billy?" (a depressing song in its own right), but they split up.

This was Terry's first solo record after the split.

4. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"

Is truly stupid the same as depressing?

Lyrics for: Timothy

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be

Willful stupidity and self-induced deafness as to what's coming out of their own mouths is normally more than depressing enough, but doesn't quite fit the theme here. Besides, I've hit my quota on that type of depressing song-and-dance already.

I liked "Timothy". I believe it was Rupert Holmes' first hit, although he only wrote the song. Everyone needs a nice pop song about cannibalism.

Hey, look! Ayak likes it.

That and the movie Soylent Green, which happens to be about people eating some stuff that turns out to be other people.

I'll bet his favorite musical is Sweeney Todd, lol.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. A song about broken dreams and poverty.

In the Arms of The Angels - not sure who sings it but it is on this commercial for abused animals and the slow melodramatic song with images of helpless animals is heartbreaking.

Old school? - The pipes are still calling for Danny Boy

I have two:

My Immortal by Evanscence

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me
By your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts
My once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away
All the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

And Crying by Roy Orbison

I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"
Aww you wished me well, you couldn't tell

That I'd been cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying cry-i-ing
It's hard to understand but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you but it's tru-ue, so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do-o-o-o
For you don't love me and I'll always be

Cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Yes, now you're gone and from this moment on
I'll be crying, crying, crying, cry-i-i-ing
Yeah crying, crying, o-o-o-o-ver you

I'm not quite sure why this song seems like excessive sadness to me. Maybe it's how Leonard Cohen sings it, the melody seems to be in the key of sorrow.

Suzanne

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind

"Fire and Rain" by James Taylor

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Suzanne, the plans they made made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me Jesus
You got to help me make a stand
You just got to see me through another day
My body's achin' and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

Oh I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walkin' my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things comin' my way this time around now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you
Fire and rain

13. "Class 5 - SCHMALTZ ALERT"

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again, Naturally

In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

I always skip this one on my Men At Work Cargo CD:

Blue For You

Sometimes the sun shines in
And I close the blinds
'Cos I can't stand to see the light of day

I have no use for pain
But I don't mind the rain
'Cos I can stare outside and hear the sound

Today I looked right down
Right down to the ground
With nothing in between to break my fall

I'm blue for you, blue for you
I don't know what to do

Gotta form a plan of attack
Can't stop to look back I know
You are so far from here

Gotta be strong in my mind
Not encroach on your time I know that
That would be wrong for sure

I must get out and about
Of that I have no doubt
There surely must be new places to go

Sights I've never seen
All with pastures green
'Cos the old ones are making me blue for you

'Cos I'm blue for you, blue for you
I don't know what to do
And I'm blue for you, blue for you
I don't know what to do

Gotta form a plan of attack
Climb back on the track I know
Bid my devil friend good-bye

Hope I'm still in the race
But I don't know whaat to chase oh no
And you're still so far from here

The sun it still shines in
And I shall close the blinds
'Cos I know I won't see you anymore, see you anymore

And I'm blue for you, blue for you
I don't know what to do
'Cos I'm blue for you, blue for you
I don't know what to do
I don't know

I could take a big jump . . .

And here's a classic that has me reaching for the ol' Glock:

"Honey"

See the tree, how big it's grown,
but friend, it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
the first day that she planted it was just a twig.

Then the first snow came and she ran out
to brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
came runnin' in all excited
slipped and almost hurt herself and I laughed 'til I cried.

She was always young at heart
kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so
I surprised her with a puppy
kept me up all Christmas eve two years ago.

And it would sure embarrass her when
I came in from working late 'cause I would know
that she'd been sittin' there crying
over some sad and silly late, late show.

And Honey, I miss you and I'm being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could

She wrecked the car and she was sad
and so afraid that I'd be mad but what the heck
though I pretended hard to be
guess you could say she saw through me and hugged my neck

I came home unexpectedly
and found her crying needlessly in middle of the day
and it was in the early spring
when flowers bloom and Robins sing, she went away.

And Honey, I miss you and I'm being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could.

One day while I wasn't home
while she was there and all alone, the angels came
now all I have is memories
of Honey, and I wake up nights and call her name.

Now my life's an empty stage
where Honey lived and Honey played and love grew up
A small cloud passes over head
and cries down in the flower bed that Honey loved

And see the tree, how big it's grown,
but friend, it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
and I laughed at her and she got mad
the first day that she planted it was just a twig

Definitely agree with "Don't Take The Girl." And has anyone mentioned Morrissey?

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 10:29 AM (EST)

Concrete Angel - Martina McBride

(verse 1)
She walks to school with the luch she packed,
no body knows, what she holding back,
wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
she hides the bruises with the linen and lace.

The teacher wonders but she dosnt ask,
its hard to see the pain behind the mask,
bearing the burden of a secret storm,
sometimes she wishes she was never born.

(Chorus)
Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone,
in a world that she cant rise above.

But her dreams give her wings,
and she flies to a place,
where shes loved

Concrete angel

(verse 2)
somebody cries in the middle of the night,
the neighbours hear but they turn out the lights,
a fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
when morning comes it will be too late.

(chorus)

(bridge)
a statue stands in a shaded place,
an angel girl with an upturned face,
her name is written on a polished rock,
a broken heart that the world forgot

(chorus)

Saddest song ever

Second saddest -

Any song about child abuse tears me up.

Luka by Suzanne Vega

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why

You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why

You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

I've always thought this was a stupid little song, but with a huge message.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE
words and music by Pete Seeger

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Taken husbands every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Covered with flowers every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?

Other songs for the list:
Last Kiss
Needle And The Damage Done (Neil Young)
Cortez the Killer (more Neil)
The River (Springsteen)
Fast Car (Tracy Chapman)
The Hurricane (Dylan)
Hurt (Reznor, but think Johnny Cash)

Strange, but these are many of my very favourite songs.

I think I must have seen the same tour. Those songs b2b was so great. As I recall, for Powderfinger, the whole band left the stage except for Neil, and he just kept wailing away on that guitar for about 20 minutes. Wow.

The year before when we had seen Neil, he came out with a band called The International Harvesters. A bunch of banjos, and a concert full of "I wrote this song last week. I hope you like it." We didn't, so going back the next year was a bit of a gamble. Cortez and then Powderfinger more than made up for it.

In Cleveland at least, he didn't play all that many "new" songs, and he brought back some REAL oldies, such as the old Buffalo Springfield song "Flying on the Ground is Wrong", which for some reason he hadn't played before ... and which could fit in this thread:

"Flying On The Ground (Is Wrong)" (Young) (c) 1967

Is my world not falling down
I'm in pieces on the ground
And my eyes aren't open
And I'm standing on my knees
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

Turn me up or turn me down
Turn me off or turn me round
I wish I could have
met you in a place
Where we both belong
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

Sometimes I feel
like I'm just a helpless child
Sometimes I feel like a king.
But baby, since I have changed
I can't take nothing home.

City lights at a country fair
Never shine but always glare
If I'm bright enough to see you,
You're just too dark to care.
But if crying and holding on
And flying on the ground is wrong
Then I'm sorry to let you down,
But you're from my side of town
And I'll miss you.

Here was the Cleveland set list from 1984:

Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys / Are You Ready For The Country? / Hawks And Doves / Comes A Time / Love Is A Rose / Long May You Run / Bound For Glory / Fingers / Are There Any More Real Cowboys? / Amber Jean / Heart Of Gold / Roll Another Number / Southern Pacific / The Needle And The Damage Done / Helpless / California Sunset / It Might Have Been / Flying On The Ground (Is Wrong) / Soul Of A Woman / Field Of Opportunity / Old Man / Powderfinger / Get Back To The Country / Four Strong Winds

The next year, still with the International Harvesters, he played a similar set, except that it included "Down by the River" and "Ohio":

Country Home / Comes A Time / Looking For A Love / Heart Of Gold / This Old House / Bound For Glory / Southern Pacific / Helpless / Nothing Is Perfect / California Sunset / It Might Have Been / Field Of Opportunity / Down By The River / Old Man / Powderfinger / Ohio / Get Back To The Country / Grey Riders

What I most remember about these concerts is how LOUD they were....

Love the one you're with.

And if you cant be with the one you love
Love the one you're with
Don't be angry
Don't be sad
Don't sit cryin' for good times you had
There's a girl right next to you
And she's waiting for something to do
Chorus

Do it
Do it
Do it
Turn your heartache into joy
She's a girl and you're a boy
Get together, make it tonight,
You ain't gonna need no more advice

Easily the worst advice ever given in a song. And I am sure it caused many divorces and other tragedies. THAT is depressing.

I couldn't help it, honey, these rock stars told me to do it...and she was there...you weren't. Lorena, please put the knife down now, honey!

Two more rays of sunshine for the list:

Streets of Philadelphia-Bruce Springsteen, Oscar winning song but wow, how depressing.

17 Again- Eurythmics, sample lyric - "Times might break you, God forsake you, leave you burned and bruised, Innocence will teach you what it feels like to be used..."

To me the sad part about Streets of Philadelphia is that it won the Oscar. I thought Neil Young's song Philadelphia from that same movie was better. And his performance at those awards was very moving.

31. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
Alyssa Lies by Jason Michael Carroll

My little girl met a new friend,
just the other day,
on the playground at school
between the tires and the swings

But she came home with tear-filled eyes,
and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies"

Well I just brushed it off at first,
cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt
or the things she had seen.
I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me"

and she said...

Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep.
As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
"God bless my mom and my dad
and my new friend, Alyssa
I know she needs you bad"

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise

I had the worst night of sleep in years
as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears
I knew exactly what I had to do
but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad.
The lump in my throat grew bigger
with every question that she asked.
Until I felt the tears run down my face
and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today

Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom
she doesn't lie anymore at school
Alyssa lies with Jesus
because there's nothin' anyone would do.

Tears filled my eyes, when my little girl asked me why
Alyssa lies.
Oh Daddy Tell Me Why
Alyssa lies

She Thinks His Name Was John

She can account for all of the men in her past
Where they are now, who they married, how many kids they have
She knew their backgrounds, family and friends
A few she even talks to now and then

But there is one she can't put her fingers on
There is one who never leaves her thoughts
And she thinks his name was John

A chance meeting, a party a few years back
Broad shoulders and blue eyes, his hair was so black
He was a friend of friend you could say
She let his smile just sweep her away
And in her heart she knew that it was wrong
But too much wine and she left his bed at dawn
And she thinks his name was John

Now each day is one day that's left in her life
She won't know love, have a marriage or sing lullabies
She lays all alone and cries herself to sleep
'Cause she let a stranger kill her hopes and her dreams

And all her friends say what a pity what a loss
And in the end when she was barely hangin' on
All she could say is she thinks his name was John
She thinks his name was John

That song gives me chills.

Practically anything by Nick Cave, particularly from "Murder Ballads," but, specifically, "Kindness of Strangers."

They found Mary Bellows cuffed to the bed
With a rag in her mouth and a bullet in her head
O poor Mary Bellows
She'd grown up hungry, she'd grown up poor
She left her home in Arkansas
O poor Mary Bellows
She wanted to see the deep blue sea
She travelled across Tennessee
O poor Mary Bellows
She met a man along the way
He introduced himself as Richard Slade
O poor Mary Bellows
Poor Mary thought that she might die
When she saw the ocean for the first time
O poor Mary Bellows
She checked into a cheap little place
Richard Slade carried in her old suitcase
O poor Mary Bellows
'I'm a good girl, sir', she said to him
I couldn't possibly permit you in
O poor Mary Bellows
Slade tipped his hat and winked his eye
And turned away without goodbye
O poor Mary Bellows
She sat on her bed and thought of home
With the sea breeze whistling all alone
O poor Mary Bellows
In hope and loneliness she crossed the floor
And undid the latch on the front door
O poor Mary Bellows
They found her the next day cuffed to the bed
A rag in her mouth and a bullet in her head
O poor Mary Bellows
So mothers keep your girls at home
Don't let them journey all alone
Tell them this world is full of danger
And to shun the company of strangers
O poor Mary Bellows
O poor Mary Bellows

"Kindness of Strangers" and his version of "The Ship Song" get me choked up every time.

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 10:28 AM (EST)

My teenage years were spent crying over many a power ballad and U2/REM songs.

Hmmm, some that come to mind:

Don't Know What You Got (til it's gone) by Cinderella

I can't tell you baby what went wrong
I can't make you feel what
you felt so long ago
I let it show
I can't give you back what's been hurt
Heart aches come and go and
All that's left are the words
I can't let go
If we take some time, think it over baby
Take some time, let me know
If you really wanna go
Don't know what you got til it's gone
Don't know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
It's just this song
And it ain't easy to get back takes so long

November Rain by Guns & Roses
When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same

'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain

We've been through this auch a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain

But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away

Have you Ever Needed Someone So Bad by Def Leppard
Here I am, I'm in the wrong bed again
It's just a game I just can't win
There you are breathin' soft on my skin
Still you won't let me in

Why save your kisses for a rainy day
Baby let the moment take your heart away

Have you ever needed someone so bad, yeah
Have you ever wanted someone
You just couldn't have
Did you ever try so hard
That your world just fell apart
Have you ever needed someone so bad
And you're the girl I gotta have
I gotta have you baby

There you go, midnight promises again
But they're broken by the dawn
You wanna go further, faster every day baby
But in the morning you'll be gone
And I'm alone

Something to Believe In by Poison was just a sad song, with it's story of a Vietnam Vet's horrible return home.
Will I see him on the tv
Preachin bout the promised land
He tells me to believe in jesus
And steals the money from my hand

Some say he was a good man
But lord I think he sinned, yeah

Twenty-two years of mental tears
Cries a suicidal vietnam vet
Who fought a losing war on a foreign shore
To find his country didnt want him back

Their bullets took his best friend in saigon
Our lawyers took his wife and kids, no regrets
In a time I dont remember
In a war he cant forget

He cried forgive me for what Ive done there
Cause I never meant the things I did

And give me something to believe in
If theres a lord above
And give me something to believe in
Oh, lord arise

My best friend died a lonely man
In some palm springs hotel room
I got the call last christmas eve
And they told me the news

I tried all night not to break down and cry
As the tears rolled down my face
I felt so cold and empty
Like a lost soul out of place

And the mirror, mirror on the wall
Sees my smile it fades again

Sometimes I wish to God I didnt know now
The things I didnt know then
Road you gotta take me home

I drive by the homeless sleeping on a cold dark street
Like bodies in an open grave
Underneath the broken old neon sign
That used to read jesus saves

A mile away live the rich folks
And I see how theyre living it up
While the poor they eat from hand to mouth
The rich is drinkin from a golden cup

And it just makes me wonder
Why so many lose, so few win

You take the high road
And Ill take the low road

Sometimes I wish to God I didnt know now
The things I didnt know then

And give me something to believe in

Every Rose Has It's Thorn by Poison
We both lie silently still
In the dead of the night
Although we both lie close together
We feel miles apart inside

Was it something I said or something I did
Did my words not come out right
Though I tried not to hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess thats why they say

Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn

With or Without You by U2
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

Everybody Hurts by REM Sure, it's supposed to be encouraging, but really it reminds us everyone's life sucks.

When your day is long and the night,
The night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough
With this life,
Well hang on

Don't let yourself go,
'Couse everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your days is night alone,
If you feel like letting go,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life,
Well hang on

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand
Oh, no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone,
No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life,
The days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on

Lush Life by Billy Strayhorn. (And he was only a teenager when he wrote it.)

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come-what-may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life --
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails.

The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distingue traces
That used to be there -- you could see where they'd been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o'clock tales

Then you came along with your siren song
To tempt me to madness...
I thought for a while that your poignant smile
Was tinged with the sadness...
Of a great love for me.
Ah yes, I was wrong.
Again, I was wrong.

Life is lonely again,
And only last year, everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A trough full of hearts could only be a bore.

A week in Paris will ease the bite of it
All I care is to smile in spite of it

I'll forget you, I will
While yet you are still
Burning inside my brain
Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
I'll live a lush life in some small dive
And there I'll be, while I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too.

My first reaction, when I saw your post was; "Boy, ain't that the truth."

Then you got Lush Life stuck in my head. I sang this song over and over again all afternoon. The version I sang was by John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman.

God I love this song! It is sad, but I really don't think it's depressing. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful, ballads that I've ever heard.

Pick this one, Estee!

Billy Strayhorn was an American genius! I can't believe that he wrote a song like this when he was a teenager.

I had to pull out the Impulse record (John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman) and listen to it again after reading this.

Strayhorn was a complicated individual. Openly gay in the 1930s, yet supposedly shy and retiring. A black man who really wanted to be a classical composer in the racist America of the times and had to settle for big band -- but did more with it than anyone else. Great songwriter and arranger.

I can't really say that I find any song or piece of music depressing to listen to. Music just doesn't depress me. So I tried to think of songs where the protagonist appears depressed, resigned, jaded, hopeless, and "Lush Life" seems the epitome of that to me. It's sort of depressing to think about someone feeling that way.

ETA: also check out the Chris Connor version on Bethlehem, done in a beguine tempo with background fills by a forlorn-sounding flute.

Gloomy Sunday Sarah McLachlan

Sunday is Gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will never awaken you

Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of ever returning you
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday

Sunday is gloomy
with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have decided to end it all
Soon there'll be flowers and prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
Let them know that I'm glad to go

Death is no dream,
For in death I'm caressing you
With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday

Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
Asleep in the deep of
My heart
Dear

Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you
My heart is telling you how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday

I was listening to the CD this is on and a co-worker walked by and told me she sounded like she was crying singing the song.

Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes.

If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
bout a ghost from a wishin well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as Im a ghost that you cant see

All By Myself by Eric Carmen don't even mention that *other* version.

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And makin love was just for fun
Those days are gone

Livin alone
I think of all the friends Ive known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobodys home

River by Sarah McLaughlin

Oh I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly high
Oh I wish I had a river
That I could skate away on

I made my baby say goodbye

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer singing songs of joy and peace

Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

Love is a Losing Game by Amy Winehouse

For you I was a flame
Love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came
Love is a losing game

One I wish I'd never played
Oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game

49. "Need help"
LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 10:51 AM (EST)

When I was a tween there was a song about a man telling his daughter about her dead mom. I think the dead mom's name was Sunny. I've looked and can't find anything on it. Need a search wiz.

Sometimes I hate Estee.

58. "RE: Need help"
"Sunny" made me think of "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro, but there's nothing there about a father/daughter.

See the tree, how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig
Then the first snow came
And she ran out to brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all excited
Slipped and almost hurt herself
And I laughed till I cried
She was always young at heart
Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And it would sure embarrass her
When I came in from workin' late
'Cause I would know
That she'd been sittin' there and cryin'
Over some sad and silly late, late show

And honey, I miss you
And I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could

She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad
But what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me
And hugged my neck
I came home unexpectedly
And caught her cryin' needlessly
In the middle of the day
And it was in the early Spring
When flowers bloom and robins sing
She went away

And honey, I miss you
And I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could

One day while I was not at home
While she was there and all alone
The angels came
Now all I have is memories of Honey
And I wake up nights and call her name
Now my life's an empty stage
Where Honey lived and Honey played
And love grew up
And a small cloud passes overhead
And cries down on the flower bed
That Honey loved

And see the tree how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
And I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig

I hate it too, but it always makes me laugh, because I think of the Smothers Brothers take-off with the "Honey House" museum -- you would pay admission and see the tree, the wreckage of the car in the front yard, the crumpled-up tissues next to the sofa...

For some reason, "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac gets to me:

...I've been afraid of changing,
'cause I built my life around you.
But time makes you bolder,
even children get older...
now I'm getting older too....

sniff.

One that I love though, in an odd way, is Beck's "Loser", I find myself yelling along:

...I'm a loser, baby.
so why don't you kill me?

Feed Jake (Pirates of the Mississippi)

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I die before I wake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog,
My best friend right through it all, if I die before I wake,
Feed Jake

When the Children Cry (White Lion)
Little child
Dry your crying eyes
How can I explain
The fear you feel inside
´cause you were born
Into this evil world
Where man is killing man
and no one knows just why

What have we become
Just look what we have done
All that we destroyed
You must build again

When the children cry
Let them know we tried
´cause when the children sings
The new world begins

Little child
You must show the way
To a better day
For all the young
´cause you were born
For the world to see
That we all can live
In light and peace

No more presidents
And all the wars will end
One united world under god

When the children cry
Let them know we tried
´cause when the children sings
The new world begins

What have we become
Just look what we have done
All that we destroyed
You must build again

Numb (Portishead)

Unable so lost
I can't find my way
Been searching, but I have never seen
A turning, a turning from deceit

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel

I can't understand myself anymore
But I m still feeling lonely
Feeling so unholy

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel
But this loneliness
It just won't leave me alone

I'm fooling somebody
A faithless path to roam
Deceiving to breathe this secretly
This silence, a silence I can't bear

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel
And this loneliness
It just won't leave me alone
And this loneliness,
It just won't leave me alone, ohh no

A lady of war

A lady of war

19

In Saigon a U.S military spokesman said today more than 700 enemy troops
Were killed last week in that sensitive border area
Throughout all of South Vietnam the enemy lost a total 2689 soldiers

All those who remember the war
They won't forget what they've seen
Destruction of men in their prime
Whose average was 19
Dedededededede-Destruction
Dedededededede-Destruction

According to a Veteran's Administration study
Half of the Vietnam combat veterans suffered from what Psychiatrists call
Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder
Many vets complain of alienation, rage, or guilt
Some succumb to suicidal thoughts
Eight to Ten years after coming home almost eight hundred thousand men
Are still fighting the Vietnam War

None of them received a heroes welcome

Dedededededede-Destruction

I haven't heard that song since my uni days. We had changed it a bit to mock one of our friends who was caught hooking up with an under-ager at the bar. (we were all about 21)

At Fed Hall one night, the average age of girls hit on by Jeff was seventeen.
se-se-se-seventeen, seventeen. 17.

66. "Nothing like abortion and resentment "
Brick by Ben Folds
6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb

Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out
And we drive

Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly

they call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Then she ever has before

She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly

As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
She broke down and I broke down
Cause I was tired of lying

Driving back to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
I'm alone
Now I know it

I was thinking of this song too Weltek.

Guess I'll have to go with my runner up choice

One by Metallica (there's nothing like the thought of having no arms or legs to really pick up your day!)

I can't remember anything
Cant tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
Im waking up I can not see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me

Back in the womb its much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But cant look forward to reveal
Look to the time when Ill live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Now the world is gone Im just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

Another one that's supposed to be uplifting but does the opposite.

Beautiful by Christina Agueleraghahara

Every day is so wonderful
And suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today

Sidenote: I'm learning today that lyrics on the web are totally unreliable! On one site, "And suddenly, it's hard to breathe" was written as "And suddenly, I saw debris." LOL

LOL.

While searching for lyrics I've found some mighty interesting songs I'm going to have to check out.

I think this might be my new theme song.

You Can't Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd

Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down, do it, do it, do it

Well, ya can't go a-swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down do it, do it, do it

Well, ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't go fishin' in a watermelon patch
Ya can't go fishin' in a watermelon patch
Ya can't go fishin' in a watermelon patch
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd

There's no time for us
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away from us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever....?

There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?

Who dares to love forever?
When love must die

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today
Who waits forever anyway?

*giggle* me too! My DH, normally a fairly well-adjusted person is obsessed with Highlander, and this song always reminds me of it.

The one where the Highlander gets the "energy" (or whatevertheheck its called) from the frikkin' EIFFEL TOWER had me choking back shrieks of laughter as my poor DH was all "moved"... who wants to live forever indeed?

CAT'S IN THE CRADLE by Harry Chapin

A child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away, and he was
Talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew, he said:
I'm gonna be like you, dad,
You know I'm gonna be like you

And the cat's in the cradle, and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, dad, I don't know when
But we'll have a good time then, son
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day, he said
Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said not today,
I got a lot to do, he said that's okay
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed, it said
I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him.

And the cat's in the cradle, and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, dad, I don't know when
But we'll have a good time then, son
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son I'm proud of you, can we sit for a while?
He shook his head, and said, with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See ya later, can I have them please?

And the cat's in the cradle, and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, son, I don't know when
But we'll have a good time then, dad
You know we'll have a good time then.

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day.
I said, I'd like to see you, if you don't mind, he said
I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new job's a hassle and the kids got the flu
But it's been sure nice talkin' to you, yeah
Sure nice talkin' to you.
And as I hung up the phone it occured to me,
He'd grown up just like me, yeah.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle, and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, son, I don't know when
But we'll have a good time then, dad
You know we'll have a good time then.

That was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. I would sing that at Scout campfires, and the kids really liked the song (they could sing along to the chorus).

I would have to end the song by pointing out that despite the sadness of the lyrics, they should be happy about all the dads who were around the campfire.

This one never worked for me. It felt like a little kid pulling on your leg. 'Look at me! I'm being depressing! See? I can be all depressing and stuff when I try! Look at me! -- are you looking?'

I never saw it that way, but I can see it. I guess part of it was that my father always found it to be a hard song to hear and didn't want to end up like the dad in the song. Part of it is that it's a warning to me (I am childless but may not always be.)

Another part is that I always think about how Harry Chapin died in a plane crash when I hear it.

I don't know. It's one of very few songs I have difficulty listening to. Most music I have a strong attachment to is a good attachment. Why, just today, I turned a bad day around through the miracle of Jon Bon Jovi and the volume level just two notches above "ear-splitting."

Actually, Harry Chapin died in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway.

But his contemporary, Jim Croce (see "Time In A Bottle" - post 124), did go in a plane crash.

It may just be a father-son thing. I can listen to the song because I think it's an absolutely fantastic song, but I still get sad. Maybe it's due to the daddy issues of sorts for me. My biological never really cared, and I didn't give my step-father the time he deserved (the more I look back, the more effort I saw he gave. It's a big regret honestly).

Of course, I turn into a blubbering sack of nothing at the end of Field of Dreams every time, so do most males I know.

I saw that in college and didn't even tear up a bit. Yeah, it's a fantastic movie, but I didn't consider it a tearjerker. I must just be weird.

I've also never seen Pride of the Yankees or Brian's Song, which, I'm pretty sure, are the tearjerker gold standards as far as sports movies go.

Of Sports movies, from what I know, that's the triad. Brian's Song is above the other two, since at least PotY and FoD were one-scene tearjerkers (Gehrig's speech and "Have a Catch" scene), but it's the gold standard.

Where Have You Been? (Kathy Mattea)
Claire had all but given up
When she and Edwin fell in love
She touched his face and shook her head
In disbelief she sighed and said
In many dreams I've held you near
Now at last you're really here

Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

He asked her for her hand for life
Then she became a salesman's wife
He was home each night by 8
But one stormy evening he was late
Her frightened tears fell to the floor
Until his key turned in the door

Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

They'd never spent a night apart
For 60 yrs she heard him snore
Now they're in a hospital
In seperate beds on different floors

Claire soon lost her memory, forgot the names of family
She never spoke a word again
Then one day they wheeled him in
He held her hand and stroked her hair
In a fragile voice she said

Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

Where have you been
I've searched for you forever and a day
Where have you been
I'm just not myself when your away
I'm just not myself when your away

Losing Your Memory (Ryan Star)
Call all your friends,
And tell them I'm never coming back.
Cause this is the end,
Pretend that you want it
Don't react.
The damage is done,
The police are coming too slow now.
I would have died,
I would have loved you all my life

Your losing your memory now.

Where have you gone,
The beach is so cold in winter here.
And where have I gone,
I wake in Montauk with you near.
Remember the day,
Cause this is what dreams should always be.
I just want to stay,
I just want to keep this dream in me.

Your losing your memory now (x4)

Wake up, it's time little girl, wake up.
All the best of what we've done is yet to come.
Wake up, it's time little girl, wake up.
Just remember who I am in the morning.

Your losing your memory now (x4).

I Don’t Know (Stage)
Send my regards to my brother down there
He walks by the ocean, the pain disappears
The sky is now falling, Heaven's unknown
And you find out the clouds were never alone

Send my regards to my lover down there
She sleeps by the music, she breathes in my air
The people are saying, the lost must be strong
But her ears are now ringing, her man of song

Will I remember your name?
I don't know
Will I remember your name?
I don't know

Send my regards to my mother down there
She gave me my name and my brown colored hair
The man to my left says he's Moses in black
And the whole world is sad now, so I'm going back

Will I remember your name?
I don't know
Will I remember your name?
I don't know

78. "How about some Elvis"
Don't Cry Daddy

Today I stumbled from my bed
With thunder crashing in my head
And my pillow still wet
From last night's tears
And as I think of giving up
A voice inside my coffee-cup
Kept crying out
Ringing in my ears
Don't cry daddy
Daddy, please don't cry

Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please don't cry
Why are children always first
To feel the pain and hurt the worst
It's true, but somehow
It just don't seem right
'Cause ev'ry time I cry I know
It hurts my little children so

And I wonder will it be the same tonight
Don't cry daddy
Daddy, please don't cry
Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh, daddy, please don't cry
Oh, daddy, please don't cry

In The Ghetto

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,

are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way
Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
And his hunger burns
so he starts to roam the streets at night
and he learns how to steal
and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation

a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries

79. "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?"
by Jimmy Ruffin

As I walk this land of broken dreams
I have visions of many things
But happiness is just an illusion
Filled with sadness and confusion

What becomes of the brokenhearted
Who had love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Maybe

Fruits of love grow all around
But for me they come a tumbling down
Every day heartaches grow a little stronger
I can't stand this pain much longer
I walk in shadows searching for light
Cold and alone no comfort in sight
Hoping and praying for someone who cares
Always moving and going nowhere

What becomes of the brokenhearted
Who had love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Help me, please

I'm searching though I don't succeed
For someone’s love there's a growing need
All is lost there's no place for beginning
All that's left is an unhappy ending

Now what becomes of the brokenhearted
Who had love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
I'll be searching everywhere
Just to find someone to care
I'll be looking every day
I know I'm gonna find a way
Nothings going to stop me now
I'll find a way somehow

What becomes of the broken hearted
Who had love that's now departed
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind, maybe
Oh yeah
What becomes of the broken hearted
Who had love that's now departed
What becomes of the broken hearted
Who had love that's now departed
What becomes of the broken hearted.

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 01:44 PM (EST)

Adam’s Song (Blink 182)
I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest, who'd have known?
I traced the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all

I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine, I didn't think enough
I'm too depressed to go on
You'll be sorry when I'm gone

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait 'til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

I never thought I'd die alone
Another six months, I'll be unknown
Give all my things to all my friends
You'll never step foot in my room again

You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside

The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait 'til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

I never conquered, rarely came
Tomorrow holds such better days
Days when I can still feel alive
When I can't wait to get outside

The world is wide, the time goes by
The tour is over, I've survived
I can't wait 'til I get home
To pass the time in my room alone

Breathe Me (Sia)
Help, I have done it again
I have been here many times before
Hurt myself again today
And, the worst part is there's no-one else to blame

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
and needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Ouch I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found,
Yeah I think that I might break
Lost myself again and I feel unsafe

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
and needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
and needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

The Moment I Said It (Imogen Heap)
The moment I said it,
The moment I opened my mouth
Lead your eyelids,
Bulldozed the life out of me

I know what you're thinking,
But darling you're not thinking straight
Sadly things just happen we can't explain

It's not even light out,
But you've somewhere to be
No hesitation
No I’ve never seen you like this,
And I don't like it
I don't like it
I don't like it at all

Just put back the car keys,
Or somebody's gonna get hurt
Who are you calling at this hour?
Sit down, come round, I need you now
We'll work it all out together,
But we're getting nowhere tonight
Now sleep, I promise it'll all seem better,
Somehow in time

It's not even light out,
Suddenly (suddenly) oh, you've somewhere to be
With no hesitation
Oh, I've never seen you like this
You're scaring me
You're scaring me
You're scaring me to death

Don't…ohh (smash)
Please don't…ohh (and a- nother one)
Don't…ohh (smash)
Please don't…ohh (and a- nother one)

I'm losing you, I'm losing you
Trust me on this one
I've got a bad feeling,
Trust me on this one
You're gonna throw it all away
With no hesitation

(Smash)

Bye

(This song is so haunting and gorgeous.)

Ooh, I forgot about "Adam's Song." That is a sad one.

"Last Resort" by Papa Roach is also sad/depressing.

Cut my life into pieces
This is my last resort
Suffocation
No breathing
Don't give a f**k if I cut my arm bleeding

This is my last resort

Cut my life into pieces
I've reached my last resort
Suffocation
No breathing
Don't give a f**k if I cut my arm bleeding
Do you even care if I die bleeding
Would it be wrong
Would it be right
If I took my life tonight
Chances are that I might
Mutilation outta sight
And I'm contemplating suicide

'cause I'm losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine

I never realized I was spread too thin
Till it was too late
And I was empty within
Hungry
Feeding on chaos
And living in sin
Downward spiral where do I begin
It all started when I lost my mother
No love for myself
And no love for another
Searching to find a love up on a higher level
Finding nothing but questions and devils

'cause I'm losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me in fine
Losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Nothing's alright
Nothing is fine
I'm running and I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying

I can't go on living this way

Cut my life into pieces
This is my last resort
Suffocation
No breathing
Don't give a f**k if I cut my arm bleeding
Would it be wrong
Would it be right
If I took my life tonight
Chances are that I might
Mutilation outta sight
And I'm contemplating suicide

'cause I'm losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight
Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Nothing's alright
Nothing is fine
I'm running and I'm crying

I can't go on living this way
Can't go on
Living this way
Nothing's alright

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 12:26 PM (EST)

This is a depressing song about a junkie by the Brit band Suede:

The Living Dead:

If I was the wife of an acrobat...
Could of had it all...Could of had it all...

Where's all the money gone? - I'm talking to you,
All up the whole in your arm,
is the needle a much better screw?
But oh, what will you do alone? Cos I have to go.

Where is this life of fun that you promised me?
Nothing here works but your works and I mean it
I have to leave
But oh, what will you do alone? Cos I have to go.
If I was the wife of an acrobat would I look like the living dead, boy?

You're on the wire and can't get back,Let's talk about the living dead
Could have had a car, could have had it all,
Could have walked in the sky but we stare at the wall.
I know where the money's gone - I know what you do
Cos I've seen the hole in your arm and the needle's a much better screw
but oh, what will you do alone? Cos I have to go.

From his song "Nuclear Daydream"

You can hold your needle
You can point your gun
You can shoot and kill me
Or you could let me run

But I won't ever cry for you anymore
The days when I would die for you are now gone

If there's a plan then tell me
If you know who you are
A princess or a mummy
A flower or a scar

So I don't have to cry for you anymore
The days when I would die for you are now gone
Are now gone

What's it like to lose control
Are you even here at all

This is a nuclear daydream
It's my atomic bomb
I already lost my passage
I already lost our home

So I won't ever cry for you anymore
The days when I would die for you are now gone

There's only dreams and numbers
And wishes left unsaid
In all the burning letters
Underneath our bed

Ill have a blue Christmas without you
Ill be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Wont be the same dear, if you're not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
Thats when those blue memories start calling
You'll be doin all right, with your Christmas of white
But Ill have a blue, blue blue blue Christmas

89. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
Johnny Cash (though on youtube it's also done by Kermit the Frog)

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

"Adrian"

Adrian came home again last summer
Things just haven't been the same around here
People talk
People stare
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
An unfortunate accident in a canoe
Dr. said, 'I'm sorry not much I can do'
The air was so still
His eyes did not blink
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
Little Mary Epperson liked him
She vowed always to watch after him
Still he did not move
Dr. said it's no use
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
She sat by his side, watched the years fly by
He looked so fragile, he looked so small
She wondered why he was still alive at all
Everyone in town had that 'I'm sorry look'
They talked in a whispered hush, said
'I'd turn the machines off'
But still she sat by his side
Said, 'Life he won't be denied
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
Yellow flowers decorate his bedroom
Sign above his door says 'Welcome Home'
But he just sits and stares
He's awake but he's still not there
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
She sat by his side, watched the years fly by
He looked so fragile, he looked so small
She wondered why he was still alive at all
Little Mary Epperson grew up lovely
She still comes to visit him on Sundays
He's like an unused toy
He's got big hands but the mind of a little boy
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
Adrian came home again last summer
Things just haven't been the same around here

I'd forgotten it was done by them. Johnny's is the one that got to me. I doubt I've ever even heard the NIN version.

Don't have the time to read the whole thresd, but my votes are for:

"Wildfire" -- Love, lost all too soon.

"Beautiful Boy (Darling Sean)" -- John Lennon's tribute to his son, dreaming of watching him grow. Reality crashed in.

"Cat's in the Cradle" -- another father/son relationship gone south.

Otis Redding:

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay'
'Cause I had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

115. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
Wow! That was my favorite slow dance song, in high school!

Here's one for you. I like the Chet Baker version the best.

Everything Happens to Me.

I make a date for golf, and you can bet your life it rains.
I try to give a party, and the guy upstairs complains.
I guess I'll go through life, just catching colds and missing trains.
Everything happens to me.

I never miss a thing. I've had the measles and the mumps.
And every time I play an ace, my partner always trumps.
I guess I'm just a fool, who never looks before he jumps.
Everything happens to me.

At first, my heart thought you could break this jinx for me.
That love would turn the trick to end despair.
But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me.
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air.

I've telegraphed and phoned and sent an air mail special too.
Your answer was goodbye and there was even postage due.
I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you.
Everything happens to me.

Another great song, and yes I like Chet's version too -- his laconic delivery suits the air of resignation portrayed by the lyrics.

LOL, I've never thought of "The Dock of the Bay" as a slow-dance song (or a dance song of any sort).

Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends
and we notice you don't come around
Me, I think it all depends
on you touching ground with us.

But, I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.
And I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's
the best way to be.
When I'm all alone it's
the best way to be.
When I'm by myself
nobody else can say goodbye.

Everything is temporary anyway.
When the streets are wet --
the color slip into the sky.
But I don't know why that means you and I are
- that means you and I....

I quit -- I give up.
Nothin's good enough for anybody else it seems.
But I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else it seems.

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's

When I'm all alone it's

"How Will He Find Me" Deb Talan

if i don't stand out like a star among the moons
if i am always late and he always walks away too soon
i walk the world with a skin so thin
i can wear no adequate protection
everything comes crashing in
if i'm too wide open for this place
but not enough for him to recognize my face

how will he find me
with no one's arms to gather me together
how will he find me
only held by gravity
faded with uncertainty
no longer young and not that pretty
how will he ever find me

it never seems to matter the tears i cry
there's a well inside of me that never runs dry
from being born i guess
and born in life until we die
the music and the hope for love keeps me alive
still i wonder

how will he find me
with no one's arms to gather me together
how will he find me
only held by gravity
faded with uncertainty
no longer young and not that pretty
how will he ever find me

and what shall i do with a drunken heart
googoo eyes and the troubling hunger
reaching forward to trick mirror men
leaning out and in again
if love is a game how can it be creation
and if i'm wasting my time how will he find me

how will he find me
with no one's arms to gather me together
how will he find me
only held by gravity
faded with uncertainty
no longer young and not that pretty
how will he ever find me

110. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
These 2 always make me cry

Travelin' Soldier - Dixie Chicks

Two days past eighteen
He was waiting for the bus in his army green
Sat down in a booth in a cafe there
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gives him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talking to me,
I'm feeling a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's getting kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

And this one because it always reminds me of my Mom when she got sick with her brain tumor, and it was one of her favorites.

Unwell - Matchbox Twenty

All day
Staring at the ceiling
Making friends with shadows on my wall
All night
Hearing voices telling me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for something
Hold on
I'm feeling like I'm headed for a
Breakdown
I don't know why

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know, right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

Me
Talking to myself in public
Dodging glances on the train
I know
I know they've all been talking 'bout me
I can hear them whisper
And it makes me think there must be something wrong
With me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow
I've lost my mind

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

I been talking in my sleep
Pretty soon they'll come to get me
Yeah, they're taking me away

I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell
I know, right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me

I'm not crazy I'm just a little impaired
I know, right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be
Hey, how I used to be
How I used to be, yeah
Well I'm just a little unwell
How I used to be
How I used to be

Tomorrow Wendy
It is complete now two ends of time are neatly tied up
A one-way street, she’s walking to end of the line
And there she meets the faces she keeps in her heart and mind
They say good bye. tomorrow, wendy, you’re going to die
They say good bye. tomorrow, wendy, you’re going to die
Underneath the chilly gray november sky
We can make believe that kennedy is still alive and
We’re shooting for the moon and smiling jackie’s driving by and
They say good try tomorrow wendy is going to die
Tomorrow wendy is going to die
I told the priest, don’t count on any second coming
God got his ##### kicked the first time he came down here slumming!
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us!
No, I don’t wonder why, I wonder what he thought it would get us?
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to die
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
Only God says jump
So I set the time
cause if he ever saw it
It was through these eyes of mine!
And if he ever suffered it was me who did his crying
Hey hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
(tomorrow wendy? going to die)
Tomorrow wendy? going to die
(tomorrow wendy? going to cry)
Tomorrow wendy is going to die
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry

Everybody Knows
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows that the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight is fixed
The poor stay poor and the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows that the boat is sinking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybodys got this broken feeling
Like their momma or their dog just died
Everybodys hands are in their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Thats the way it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that its now or never
Everybody knows that its me or you
Everybody knows that you live forever
When you had a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joe still pickin cotton
For ribbons and bows
Everybody knows you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you been faithful
Give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you been discrete
So many people you had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Thats the way it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Thats how it goes
And everybody knows

Joey
Joey, baby - dont get crazy
Detours. fences... I get defensive
I know youve heard it all before -
So I dont say it anymore
I just stand by and watch you
Fight your secret war.
Although I used to wonder why -
I used to cry till I was dry.
Still sometimes I get a strange pain
Inside
Oh, joey, if youre hurting so am i.
Joey, honey - I got some money
All is forgiven. listen, listen
And if I seem to be confused
I didnt mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you,
Well I guess you scared me too.
But we got lucky once before
And if youre somewhere out there
Passed out on the floor.
Oh joey, Im not angry anymore

Theres a green plaid jacket on the back of the chair
Its like a moment frozen forever there

Mom and dad had a lot of big plans for their little man
...so proud.
Mamas gone crazy cause her babys shot down
By some teenage car chase war out of bounds
It was the wrong place wrong time wrong end of a gun.

Shoot straight from the hip
Gone forever in a trigger slip
You know, it could have been
It could have been your brother.
Shoot straight shoot to kill
Blame each other, blame yourselves
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

Theyre gonna call me sir theyll all stop picking on me
Well Im a high school grad Im over 5 foot 3
Ill get a badge and a gun and Ill join the p.d.
Theyll see
He didnt have to use the gun they put in his hand
But when the guy came at him, well he panicked and ran
And its thirty long years before they give him another chance
And its sad sad sad

John lennon, doctor king, harvey milk
All for goddamn nothing
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

If You Are Reading This

by Tim McGraw

If you’re reading this
My momma is sitting there
Looks like I only got a one way ticket over here
I sure wish I could give you one more kiss
War was just a game we played when we were kids
Well I’m laying down my gun
I’m hanging up my boots
I’m up here with God
And we’re both watching over you

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my momma always prayed that it would go.
If you’re reading this I’m already home.

If you’re reading this
Half way around the world
I won’t be there to see the birth of our little girl
I hope she looks like you
I hope she fights like me
And stands up for the innocent and the weak
I’m laying down my gun
Hanging up my boots
Tell dad I don’t regret that i followed in his shoes

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul is where my momma always prayed that it would go
If you’re reading this, I’m already home

If you’re reading this, there is going to come a day
You move on and find someone else and that’s okay
Just remember this
I’m in a better place
Where soldiers live in peace and angels sing amazing grace

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul is where my momma always prayed that it would go
If you’re reading this
If you’re reading this
I’m already home

LAST EDITED ON 04-17-08 AT 02:22 PM (EST)

One of my XBFs was a B,S, and T fan. He liked this song. Not only are the words sad, but the singer sounds so depressed when he is singing it.

Sometimes in Winter by Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Sometimes in Winter
I gaze into the streets
And walk through snow and city sleet
Behind your room

Sometimes in Winter
Forgotten memories
Remember you behind the trees
With leaves that cried

By the window once I waited for you
Laughing slightly you would run
Trees alone would shield us in the meadow
Makin' love in the evening sun

Now you're gone girl
And the lamp posts call your name
I can hear, them
In the spring of frozen rain
Now you're gone girl
And the time's slowed down till dawn
It's a cold room and the walls ask
Where you've gone

Sometimes In Winter
I love you when the good times
Seem like mem'ries in the spring
That never came

Sometimes In Winter
I wish the empty streets
Would fill with laughter from the tears
That ease my pain

Tell Laura I Love Her

Tommy and Laura were lovers he wanted to give her everything
Flowers, presents, and most of all a wedding ring
He saw a sign for a stock car race a thousand dollar prize it read
He couldn't get Laura on the phone so to her mother Tommy said
Tell Laura I love her tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura I may be late I've something to do that cannot wait
He drove his car to the racing ground he was the youngest driver there
The crowd roared as they started to race
Around the truck they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath they heard him say
Tell Laura I love her tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry my love for her will never die

Now in the chapel Laura prays for her Tommy who passed away
It was just for Laura that he lived and died alone in the chapel she can hear him cry
Tell Laura I love her...
My love for her will never die

Yesterday

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.

I can't listen to Yesterday anymore without hearing the Cretin Choir's version of it at a med show several years ago.

Bits and pieces falling off of me
Oh I believe in leprosy

These are just the ones that are most depressing to me...YMMV

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

A Song for You - Donny Hathaway

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With 10,000 people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you

I know your image of me is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
And darling can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Baby can't you see through me
Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you

You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love, withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
Now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
Cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You' re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song to you

I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You' re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song to you
We were alone and I was singing this song to you
We were alone and I was singing this song...singing this song to you

...maybe not exactly 'depressing', but it's one of the most emotionally touching songs (only the Donny Hathaway version, though) - easily one of my favorite songs ever.

Disturbing IMO...here are the lyrics:

My teas gone cold Im wondering why i..
Got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window..
And I cant see at all
And even if I could itll all be gray,
But your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that its not so bad,
Its not so bad..

1st chorus: volume gradually grows over raindrop background
2nd chorus: full volume with beat right after thunder noise

Dear slim, I wrote but you still aint callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot em
But anyways; ##### it, whats been up? man hows your daughter?
My girlfriends pregnant too, Im bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what ima call her?
Ima name her bonnie
I read about your uncle ronnie too Im sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some ##### who didnt want him
I know you probably hear this everyday, but Im your biggest fan
I even got the underground ##### that you did with skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the ##### you did with rawkus too, that ##### was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
Just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan
This is stan

{chorus: dido}

Dear slim, you still aint called or wrote, I hope you have a chance
I aint mad - I just think its ##### up you dont answer fans
If you didnt wanna talk to me outside your concert
You didnt have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for matthew
Thats my little brother man, hes only six years old
We waited in the blistering cold for you,
Four hours and you just said, no.
Thats pretty ##### man - youre like his ##### idol
He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do
I aint that mad though, I just dont like bein lied to
Remember when we met in denver - you said if Id write you
You would write back - see Im just like you in a way
I never knew my father neither;
He used to always cheat on my mom and beat her
I can relate to what youre saying in your songs
So when I have a shitty day, I drift away and put em on
Cause I dont really got ##### else so that ##### helps when Im depressed
I even got a tattoo of your name across the chest
Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds
Its like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me
See everything you say is real, and I respect you cause you tell it
My girlfriends jealous cause I talk about you 24/7
But she dont know you like I know you slim, no one does
She dont know what it was like for people like us growin up
You gotta call me man, Ill be the biggest fan youll ever lose
Sincerely yours, stan -- p.s.
We should be together too

{chorus: dido}

Dear mister-im-too-good-to-call-or-write-my-fans,
Thisll be the last package I ever send your #####
Its been six months and still no word - I dont deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters;
I wrote the addresses on em perfect
So this is my cassette Im sending you, I hope you hear it
Im in the car right now, Im doing 90 on the freeway
Hey slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?
You know the song by phil collins, in the air of the night
About that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning
But didnt, then phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
Thats kinda how this is, you coulda rescued me from drowning
Now its too late - Im on a 1000 downers now, Im drowsy
And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped +all+ of your pictures off the wall
I love you slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you cant sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you cant sleep and you scream about it
I hope your conscience eats at you and you cant breathe without me
See slim; {*screaming*} shut up #####! Im tryin to talk!
Hey slim, thats my girlfriend screamin in the trunk
But I didnt slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I aint like you
Cause if she suffocates shell suffer more, and then shell die too
Well, gotta go, Im almost at the bridge now
Oh #####, I forgot, howm I supposed to send this ##### out?
{*car tires squeal*} {*crash*}
.. {*brief silence*} .. {*loud splash*}

{chorus: dido}

Dear stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriends pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, Im really flattered you would call your daughter that
And heres an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the starter cap
Im sorry I didnt see you at the show, I musta missed you
Dont think I did that ##### intentionally just to diss you
But whats this ##### you said about you like to cut your wrists too?
I say that ##### just clownin dogg,
Cmon - how ##### up is you?
You got some issues stan, I think you need some counseling
To help your ##### from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And whats this ##### about us meant to be together?
That type of ##### make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
Or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
Before you hurt yourself, I think that youll be doin just fine
If you relax a little, Im glad I inspire you but stan
Why are you so mad? try to understand, that I do want you as a fan
I just dont want you to do some crazy #####
I seen this one ##### on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
And had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
And in the car they found a tape, but they didnt say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
Damn!

129. "This Woman's Work"
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush

Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman's work,
This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

What Hurts the Most by Rascall Flats - watch the video!

What Hurts The Most lyrics

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don’t bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok
But that’s not what gets me

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was tryin’ to do

It’s hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I’m doin’ It
It’s hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I’m alone
Still Harder
Getting up, getting dressed, livin’ with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

Not seeing that loving you
That’s what I was trying to do

139. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
A lot of these songs I just find maudlin and manipulative, in that there isn't any real emotion that goes with them. An example would be "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Awful song, with no redeeming values.

Then there are songs like "Seasons in the Sun" or "Tears in Heaven", which I've always found sad, although they're every bit as maipulative. I think I identify the singer's real personal issues with the song subject, so it doesn't seem as phony. In other words, I'm not sure this group of songs are actually any better, but I think of them as better.

And then there are songs which are just sad, because they're easy to empathize with. "Alyssa Lies" fits into that category.

One song in this category I've always found to be sad is "Puff the Magic Dragon", about kids growing up and leaving their childhood fantasies behind. Heck, I even visited Hanalei when I was in Kaua'i....

Puff the Magic Dragon (Lipton-Yarrow)

Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

Oh, Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.
Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail.
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail.
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when Puff roared out his name.

Oh, Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.
Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys.
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened; Jackie Paper came no more.
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow; green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave.
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.

Oh, Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.
Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

I always thought that "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about pot.

At one time, folks would make a case that everything was about drugs, no matter how far-fetched. I've heard this story too. The rumors here come from the fact that the dragon was named "Puff." If there were such a thing as hot Honalee reefer, then I'd give it some credence. But there isn't. It's clear what this song is about.

That's not to say that there weren't songs about drugs or drug culture. See Tandyn Almar's brilliant "Along Comes Mary", or Grace Slick's not-as-brilliant "White Rabbit." But this isn't one of them.

Normally I'd be tempted to award you the thread -- but in this case, you have to narrow it down a little: BB's had a couple of theme tunes over the seasons.

Also, it would really help if you could provide the lyrics.

I have no idea what the AI lyrics are. I just thought they recorded Simon screaming after a really bad audition day.

From when I was young way back when

Last Game of the Season( A Blind Man in the Bleachers)-David Geddes

He's just the blind man in the bleachers
To the local home town fans
And he sits beneath the speakers
Way back in the stands
And he listens to the play by play
He's just waiting for one name
He wants to hear his son get in the game

But the boy's just not a hero
He's strictly second team
Tho he runs each night for touchdowns
In his father's sweetest dreams
He's gonna be a star some day
Tho you might never tell
But the blind man in the bleachers knows he will

And the last game of the season is a Friday night at home
And no one knows the reason why the blind man didn't come
And his boy looks kinda nervous
Sometimes turns around and stares
Just as tho' he sees the old man sittin' there

The local boys are tryin' but they slowly lose their will
Another player's down and now
He's carried from the field
At halftime in the locker room
The kid goes off alone
And no one sees him talkin' on the phone

The game's already started
When he gets back to the team
And half the crowd can hear his coach yell
"Where the hell you been?"
"Just gettin' ready for the second half,"
Is all he'll say
"Cause now you're gonna let me in to play."

Without another word, he turns and runs into the game
And through the silence on the field
Loudspeakers call his name
It'll make the local papers
How the team came from behind
When they saw him playin'out his heart to win

And when the game was over
The coach asked him to tell
What was it he was thinkin' of
That made him play so well
"You knew my dad was blind," he said
"Tonight he passed away"
"It's the first time that my father's seen me play.

Oh wait. One more:

Hold On by Sarah McLachlan

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
you know that only time will tell
What is it in me that refuses to believe
this isn't easier than the real thing
My love
you know that you're my best friend
you know I'd do anything for you
my love
let nothing come between us
my love for you is strong and true
Am I in heaven here or am I...
at the crossroads I am standing
So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face
Oh god if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before
oh god the man I love is leaving
won't you take him when he comes to your door
Am I in heaven here or am I in hell
at the crossroads I am standing
So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face...
Hold on
hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell

Eleanor Rigby

Or, if you want to open up the genres a bit:

Senza Momma, from Puccini's Suor Angelica

Send in the Clowns, from A Little Night Music. (Look on YouTube for the Judi Dench version, if you want to see it at its sad and ironic best.)

191. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
And Eleanor Rigby reminds me of another Beatles tearjerker:

She's Leaving Home

Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the back door key
Stepping outside she is free

She (We gave her most of our lives)
Is leaving (Sacrificed most of our lives)
Home (We gave her everything money could buy)
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years
Bye bye

Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband
Daddy our baby's gone
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly?
How could she do this to me?

She (We never though of ourselves)
Is leaving (Never a thought for ourselves)
Home (We struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years
Bye bye

Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade

She (What did we do that was wrong)
Is having (We didn't know it was wrong)
Fun (Fun is the one thing that money can't buy)
Something inside that was always denied
For so many years
Bye bye

She's leaving home
Bye bye

You've been warned, so don't complain.

160. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
It's a pretty comprehensive list and my votes go to "Angel" by Sarah McL and "Needle and the Damage Done" by Neil Young.

One that I am surprised no one has mentioned yet is "Both Sides Now" by Jone Mitchell

Bows and flows of angel hair
and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere,
I've looked at cloud that way.
But now they only block the sun,
they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done
but clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions i recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and junes and ferris wheels,
the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real;
I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show.
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know,
don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions i recall.
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud
to say "I love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange,
they shake their heads, they say I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained
in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall.
I really don't know life at all.

I think of "Both Sides Now" as an insecure song -- the singer is questioning what she really knows. However, "River"...

"River" (J. Mitchell)

It's coming on Christmas.
They're cutting down trees.
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace.
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.

But it don't snow here;
It stays pretty green.
I'm going to make a lot of money,
Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene.
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly.
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.
I made my baby cry.

He tried hard to help me.
You know, he put me at ease.
And he loved me so naughty,
Made me weak in the knees.
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.
I'm so hard to handle;
I'm selfish and I'm sad.
Now I've gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had.
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly.
Oh I wish I had a river.
I made my baby say goodbye.

It's coming on Christmas.
They're cutting down trees.
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace.
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on.

This song brings me to tears every time I hear it, but it's beautiful.

When I Cry by Jann Arden

When I cry
I close my eyes
And every tear falls down the side
And I pray
With all my might
That i will find my heart in someones arms
When i cry
Cry

When I cry
When I am sad
I think of every awful thing i ever did
When I cry
There is no love
No there is nothing that can comfort me enough
When I cry

Oh the salt inside my body ruins
Everyone I come close to
My hands are barley holding up my head
I am so tired of looking at my feet
All the secrets that I keep
My heart is barely hanging by a thread
Hanging by a thread

Oh look at me
and All Ive done
Ive lost so many things that I so dearly loved
I lost my soul
I lost my pride
Oh I lost any hope of having a sweet life
So I cry

Oh the salt inside my body ruins
Everyone I come close to
My hands are barley holding up my head
I am so tired of looking at my feet
All the secerts that I keep
My heart is barely hanging by a thread
Hanging by a thread

I miss you all
I wish I was
With you now
I wish I..was

I'm not familiar with that song, but this one is my favorite from Jann Arden.

Insensitive

How do you cool your lips
After a summer’s kiss
How do you rid the sweat
After the body bliss
How do you turn your eyes
From the romantic glare
How do you block the sound
Of a voice you’d know anywhere

Oh, I really should have known
By the time you drove me home
By the vagueness in your eyes
Your casual good-byes
By the chill in your embrace
The expression on your face
That told me
Maybe You might have some advice to give
On how to be
Insensitive
Insensitive
Insensitive

How do you numb your skin
After the warmest touch
How do you slow your blood
After the body rush
How do you free your soul
After you’ve found a friend
How do you teach your heart
It’s a crime to fall in love again

Oh, you probably won’t remember me
It’s probably ancient history
I’m one of the chosen few
Who went ahead and fell for you
I’m out of vogue, I’m out of touch
I fell too fast, I feel too much
I thought that you might have
Some advice to give on how to be
Insensitive
I really should have known
By the time you drove me home
By the vagueness in your eyes
Your casual good-byes
By the chill in your embrace
The expression on your face
That told me
Maybe You might have some advice to give
On how to be
Insensitive
Insensitive

165. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
ON MY OWN (from musical Les Miserables)

And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to.
Without a home, without a friend
without a face to say hello to
But now the night is near
And I can make-believe he's here

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me

In the rain
The pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
The world is full of happiness that I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him...
But only on my own...
(sniffle)

ALONE AGAIN (Gilbert O'Sullivan)

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour.
I promised myself, to treat myself,
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top,
Would throw myself off,
In an effort to, make clear to whoever,
What it's like when your shattered
Left standing in a lurch,
In a church with people saying
My God, that's tough, she stood him up,
No point in us remaining
I may as well go home,
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally.

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay.
Looking forward to, and who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play.
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around,
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces.
Leaving me to doubt, all about God and His mercy,
Oh, if He really does exist,
Why did He desert me?
And in my hour of need,
I truly am, indeed,
Alone again, naturally.

It seems to me that there are more hearts,
Broken in the world that can't be mended,
Left unattended, what do we do?
What do we do?

Now looking back over the years,
And whatever else that appears.
I remember I cried when my father died,
Never wishing to hide the tears.
At sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand why the only man,
She had ever loved had been taken.
Leaving her to start, with a heart so badly broken,
Despite encouragement from me,
No words were ever spoken.
And when she passed away,
I cried and cried all day,
Alone again, naturally
Alone again...
naturally.

TWO BEDS AND A COFFEE MACHINE (Savage Garden)

and she takes another step
slowly she opens the back door
to check that he is sleeping
pick up all the broken glass
and furniture on the floor
been up half the night screaming
now it's time to get away
pack up the kids in the car
another bruise to try and hide
another alibi to write
another ditch in the road
you keep moving
another stop sign
you keep moving on
and the years go by so fast
wonder how I ever made it through

and there are children to think of
baby's asleep in the back seat
wonder how they'll ever make it
through this living nightmare
but the mind is an amazing thing
full of candy dreams and new toys
and another cheap hotel
two beds and a coffee machine
but there are groceries to buy
and she knows she'll have to go home

another ditch in the road
you keep moving
another stop sign
you keep moving on
and the years go by so fast
wonder how I ever made it through

another bruise to try and hide
another alibi to write
another lonely highway in the black of night
there's hope in the darkness
I know you're gonna make it

another ditch in the road
keep moving
another stop sign
you keep moving on
and the years go by so fast
silent fortress built to last
wonder how I ever made it

GOODNIGHT SAIGON (Billy Joel)

We met as soul mates on Paris Island
We left as inmates from an asylum
And we were sharp, as sharp as knives
And we were so gung ho to lay down our lives

We came in spastic like tameless horses
We left in plastic as numbered corpses
And we learned fast to travel light
Our arms were heavy but our bellies were tight

We had no home front, we had no soft soap
They sent us Playboy, they gave us Bob Hope
We dug in deep and shot on sight
And prayed to Jesus Christ with all our might

We had no cameras to shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe and played our Doors tapes
And it was dark, so dark at night
And we held on to each other
Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write

And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

Remember Charlie, remember Baker
They left their childhood on every acre
And who was wrong? And who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight

We held the day in the palm of our hand
They ruled the night, and the night
Seemed to last as long as six weeks...

...On Parris Island
We held the coastline, they held the highlands
And they were sharp, as sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors
They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive

And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

PRAYER TO ST. PETER (Edwin McCain)

Let them in Peter, they are very tired;
Give them the couches where the angels sleep.
Let them wake whole again to new dawns fired
With sun not war. And may their peace be deep
Remember where the broken bodies lie --
And give them the things they like. Let them make noise,
God knows how young they were to have to die!
Give swing bands not harps, to these our boys,
Let them love Peter, -- they have had no time --
Girls sweet as meadow wind, with flowing hair --
They should have trees and bird song, hills to climb
The taste of Summer in a ripened pear,
Tell them how they are missed. Say not to fear;
It's going to be alright with us down here.

I agree, but I wasn't going to post the whole musical! Personally, I think Eponine's death song (Little Fall of Rain) is the saddest song of the story, but On My Own (sung by the same poor character) is more widely known.

Could we ever feel as solid as the shake of big hands?

It's such a long time getting over you.
So many wimpy love songs.
With I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you.
But know not what to do.

The feel of your words makes food stick to my throat.
You've got a piece of me now please let go.

Listen to me now, it's so pathetic.
What I've let the thought of you do to me.

I think about you still quite often in fact
Especially when it rains
And though you made me quite miserable
I'd still see you again

174. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
The first two of these are more depressing heard than read - great atmosphere and delivery. As a long time lover of gloomy music the first songs to pop into my head are:

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Ian Curtis, the lead singer, hung himself around the time this was released
Never Never by Assembly

100 Years by The Cure. It's not exactly subtle:

It doesn't matter if we all die
Ambition in the back of a black car
In a high building there is so much to do
Going home time
A story on the radio

Something small falls out of your mouth
And we laugh
A prayer for something better
A prayer
For something better

Please love me
Meet my mother
But the fear takes hold
Creeping up the stairs in the dark
Waiting for the death blow
Waiting for the death blow
Waiting for the death blow

Stroking your hair as the patriots are shot
Fighting for freedom on television
Sharing the world with slaughtered pigs
Have we got everything?
She struggles to get away . . .

The pain
And the creeping feeling
A little black haired girl
Waiting for Saturday
The death of her father pushing her
Pushing her white face into the mirror
Aching inside me
And turn me round
Just like the old days
Just like the old days
Just like the old days
Just like the old days

Caressing an old man
And painting a lifeless face
Just a piece of new meat in a clean room
The soldiers close in under a yellow moon
All shadows and deliverance
Under a black flag
A hundred years of blood
Crimson
The ribbon tightens round my throat
I open my mouth
And my head bursts open
A sound like a tiger thrashing in the water
Thrashing in the water
Over and over
We die one after the other
Over and over
We die one after the other
One after the other
One after the other
One after the other
One after the other

It feels like a hundred years
A hundred years
A hundred years
A hundred years
A hundred years
One hundred years

Patches by Clarence Carter and Sugar Baby Love by the Rubettes. People often comment they feel like killing themselves after hearing these songs. You simply must hear the second one of these two, but please, if you use speakers not earplugs don't have anything breakable nearby.

D.O.A. by Bloodrock. A cheerful 60s ditty that was banned from radio just like the aforementioned Timothy. D.O.A. is a first person account from a temporary survivor of an airplane crash:

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Undoubtedly I'll think of more later. It's not been a cheery evening.

182. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
Just thought of another one. "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down.

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same

All the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreamin' of your face
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind

I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, there's only you and me.

The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go.

I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time

I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl, there's only you and me.

Everything I know, and anywhere I go
It gets hard but it won't take away my love
And when the last one falls, when it's all said and done.
It gets hard but it won't take away my love

I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time

I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl, there's only you and me

And because I didn't post lyrics earlier, "Ready, Set, Don't Go."

She's gotta do what she's gotta do
And I've gotta like it or not
She's got dreams too big for this town
And she needs to give 'em a shot
Whatever they are

Looks like she's all ready to leave
Nothing left to pack
There ain't no room for me in that car
Even if she asked me to tag along
God I gotta be strong

She's at the startin' line of the rest of her life
As ready as she's ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She's waitin' on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Don't go

She says things are fallen into place
Feels like they're fallen apart
I painted this big ol' smile on my face
To hide my broken heart

If only she knew
This is where I don't say what I want so bad to say

This is where I want to but I won't get in the way
Of her and her dreams
And spreadin' her wings

She's at the startin' line of the rest of her life
As ready as she's ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She's waitin' on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Don't go

She's at the startin' line of the rest of her life
As ready as she's ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She's waitin' on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Please Don't go

Don't go
Don't go
She's gotta do what she's gotta do
She's gotta do what she's gotta do

You actually believe he can operate an iPod? That's so cute! Also delusional, sure, but at least you nailed the cute part!

Next up, you'll be telling me you believe he can feel empathy towards the suffering of others! You're just on a roll today.

LAST EDITED ON 04-18-08 AT 09:13 PM (EST)

... CNN's lead story on the evening of 13 April 2005?

The leaking of the POTUS' iPod play list.

The fact that it was leaked by an aid does imply that said aid was the one who did the 'hard work' of loading the iPod.

But W does apparently use an iPod.

I agree that if anyone could do it, Estee can.
But to do what your talking about, she doesn't need all of the great ammo presented here.

All she needs to do is to put Honey in a continual loop to do the trick.

202. "I agree"
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/04/19/eye.ent.worstsong/?section=cnn_mostpopular/

I've always been at a loss to its success. Sure, it's about a "Love Story"-type romance, and those sorts of tearjerkers sell. But the narrator of "Honey" isn't even kind to his wife: He laughs when she slips, describes her as "kinda dumb and kinda smart" and mocks her for crying at the late show.

"One day while I was not at home / While she was there and all alone / The angels came ..."

And then there's her death. Even in 1968, what kind of jerk wouldn't be at his wife's bedside as she died? No doubt, the "Honey" narrator grew up to become the narrator of Harry Chapin's far superior "Cats in the Cradle," ignoring his son as he once ignored his wife.

206. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
Gee, what an upbeat thread. *sniff* Most of the ones I would have listed are already here. But, how about Seventeen? Or, pretty much anything else by Janis Ian.

AT SEVENTEEN

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
and high school girls with clear skinned smiles
who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth

And those of us with ravaged faces
lacking in the social graces
desperately remained at home
inventing lovers on the phone
who called to say – come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen

A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
whose name I never could pronounce
said – Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
The rich relationed hometown queen
marries into what she needs
with a guarantee of company
and haven for the elderly

Remember those who win the game
lose the love they sought to gain
in debentures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
exceeds accounts received at seventeen

To those of us who knew the pain
of valentines that never came
and those whose names were never called
when choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away

The world was younger than today
when dreams were all they gave for free
to ugly duckling girls like me
We all play the game, and when we dare
we cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
that call and say – Come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
at ugly girls like me, at seventeen

Or, in the same vein as Puff *smiles at AyaK*,

THE UNICORN SONG

A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn

The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo,
and take some of those...

Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
Don't you forget My unicorns

Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
Hey Lord,

I've got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't find no unicorns"

And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
Oh, them silly unicorns

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can't wait for no unicorns"

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorns

DH suggests the entire Bruce Springsteen album "THE RISING". It's all about the people who died on 9/11.

And this dude offers a list of 25, only two of which have been listed here, so far. http://www.spinner.com/2007/05/03/the-25-most-exquisitely-sad-songs-in-the-whole-world-no-25/

207. "RE: What are the world's most depressing songs?"
A couple I have performed that you're probably not familiar with, but that I always have a hard time getting through...

DEAR SARAH. I can't find the lyrics right now, but they are comprised from a letter written (IRL) by a Civil War soldier to his wife back at home. He is preparing for the battle he knows will come later that day. A battle in which he does, in fact, lose his life.

HORIZONS. It's about the colonization of Africa by the Dutch and their wholesale slaughter of the natives. It's a tonal piece. King's Singers does it. I think you can find it online if you'd like to hear it

“Horizons”
Peter Luis van Dijk (b.1953)

Hnn, hnn
Sleep, my springbok baby,
sleep for me, my springbok child.
When morning comes, I’ll go out hunting, for you are
hungry and thirsty (Hai!)
thirsty and hungry (Hishe!)
Small moon,
Hai! young moon,
when the sun rises
you must speak to the Rain,
charm her with herbs and honeycomb,
o speak to her, that I may drink …

She will come across the dark sky:
mighty Rain-cow, sing you a song for me
that I may fi nd you on the far horizon, far horizon.

Hnn, hnn,
Sleep, my springbok baby,
sleep for me my springbok child,
When morning comes, we’ll go out hunting, for you are
Hungry and thirsty (Hai!)
thirsty and hungry (Hishe!)
O Star,
Hai! Hunting Star.
When the sun rises
you must blind with your light the Eland’s eyes,
o blind his eyes, that I may eat,
this little thing, that I may eat …

He will come across the red sands:
mighty Eland, dance your dance for me
that I may fi nd you on the far horizon, far horizon.

Sleep, my springbok baby,
sleep for me, my springbok child.
When the morning comes, they’ll come a-hunting, for they are
hungry and thirsty,
thirsty and hungry …

They will come across the waters:
mighty saviors in their sailing ships,
and they’ll show us new and far horizons,
far horizons …

And they came, came across the waters:
gods in galleons bearing bows of steel,
then they killed us on the far horizon,
horizon, horizon …
Hnn, hnn, hnn …

Hauntingly beautiful, both of them, and almost indescribably sad. There's never a dry eye in the audience (or in much of the chorus) when we have performed them.
