Mom made homemade bread - her grandma's recipe - with margarine melting on it. (We were too poor for real butter..)So, today I made some - I've got four hot loaves of bread on my counter and no one to eat it! Would anyone like the end?? The kids will be home soon - so tell me what you'd like with it- Butter, Honey, Jam, or what?? I also have some zucchini bread just out of the oven as well.. Would you rather have that?? What food from your childhood would you like to have today?? My hippos love Tribe! However, I burned my thumb - wet dishtowel vs hot loaf pan! Yeow!

Yes, we did. Grandmother on Dad's side was very down-home, blue collar type. Grandmother on Mom's side, who we called Grandmother, was a bit more formal, upper-crust Southern lady.

Steps into room, and nudges Dan over a bit....Are you trying to move in on my action?? (He says while scooting the loaves back away from Dan) I am not easily intimidated by you sagebrush boy and your thumbless wonder friend....I grew up in a family with 7 boys and 1 girl, I know how to fight for homemade bread. And just to let you all know, mom2bjm did a great job on the bread and the house did smell really good when I got home from work. Smooches to mom2bjm. Yes Dan, it would be worth going straight for... And the homemade freezer jam (strawberry, raspberry or my favorite - PEACH) is the best.

Kids? I like kids, and when it comes to homemade bread, no problem. You don't have a pet boa constrictor do you? Hmmm.... I can always ship it off to the zoo. It's gotta be Brazil because there is no extradition thing with them. Besides, you're gonna be drugged when she takes you out of the country, so you won't have much choice. We can, however, have the German food shipped up to you from Argentina. And when you get lonely, just take a gander at all those beach bunnies. Tribe, the flamer. Okay, now not to add insult to injury here, but do you all know one of the best parts about homemade bread???This morning for breakfast mom2bjm cut out circles from the slices of bread and fried an egg in the middle. I must say that one of my favorite ways to eat homemade bread is pan toasted with lots of butter so it is nice a crispy and oh so yummy. Oh, and then tonight or tomorrow if there is any leftover - I will make bread pudding - another sinful treat. And Dan, I am not sure I should tell you this, but very early in our marriage mom2bjm took a second job while I was at school or work in the evenings - she worked in the mall at Cinnabon - so guess what she is really good at making??? Yep wonderful homemade cinnamon rolls with lots of raisins and walnuts!! That is for all of us except "m" she does not care for nuts and raisins - strange child that she is. Well with those wonderful images floating around I will leave you all to go enjoy more bread - YUM!

1. That's a plus. 2. Are you saying I don't already? 3. We already do. 4. So I might be less confused? 5. I don't bother with makeup anyway. 6. Again, this doesn't benefit me. Except you would be eating it instead of me. So you would get fat and maybe I wouldn't.

Yum. I'll be happy to help you eat it. With any of your offered condiments, or with Apple Butter, if it's available.I'm just about to start mking one of my childhood favorites. I'm making turkey and dumplings for dinner. (Turkey instead of chicken because dh won't eat chicken.) I'll stew some turkey legs and wings (since no one had a turkey breast for sale) with pearl onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, corn, and seasonings and make some nice fluffy drop dumplings to float on top and finish it off. About 20yrs ago, back in my old neighborhood, the family next door was Sicilian. I'm talkin' fresh off the boat, mom and dad didn't speak any English, Sicilian. The father(Carlo) and I became fast friends. We both loved to garden, cook and eat. Sharing food bridges all language barriers and our families would spend hours sitting on our front porches eating, drinking wine and "talking". (As the years went by, their kids became fluent in English and often ended up as translators when our broken English/Italian or our sign language failed us.) Every Sunday Carlo made bread for the week. These were beautiful, round rustic Italian loaves. Every week he sent over a hot fresh loaf for us. Back then, in Minnesota no one was doing artsian baking, so Carlo's bread was unbelievable. I've been cooking since high school, but baking bread had always intimidated me. With Carlo next door, I started playing with pizzas and other flatbreads. Eventually, I asked Carlo if he'd teach me how to make his bread. Hot damn! He was excited and I was excited. The next Sunday I headed for his house, recipe card in hand. I stepped into his home ready to learn. His formica table stood bare in the middle of the kitchen. "This is how I make the bread", he says. He then proceeded to pour a 10lb bag of flour onto the tabletop. He made a hole in the center of the flour, added a scoop of yeast, a scoop of salt and a saucepan of water. Then he started kneeding like mad... Needless to say I took a deep breath and put my stupid recipe card away. I helped him with the loaves and when they had risen, we baked them. That night I took home 2 hot loaves. Eventually I taught myself how to bake bread. There is a reason that it's called the staff of life, it's really not that hard to do. I've been baking bread for nearly 20yrs now. Nothing smells better in the kitchen! Mom2bjm, thanks. I will always take the end with a little butter. It's my favorite slice. I think I'll bake bread tomorrow.

That's a wonderful story Prof! Thanks for sharing! Baking bread really isn't as intimidating as it seems! Someday I'd like to try to make some wheat bread as well! I have cans of wheat in my food storage, but I need to get a grinder or food mill in order to use it!*hands slice over* I lvoe to give away things I bake - I just took a loaf to one neighbor and am waiting for another to get home. If I take it before she arrives, her house of boys would eat it and she'd never get any!! My hippos love Tribe! Also delivering a few homemade caramels with bread! Special treat!

Yes, there is a slice left for you! THe homemade bread is really good toasted - so I'll toast it for you! I made some of the zucchini into muffins - so here's a couple - and there is ALWAYS milk in our house! Okay - here's another question - how much does everyone pay for milk these days? We often have sales for $1 a half gallon which is alright - Safeway has been doing buy one get one free at $3.49 a gallon, also not too bad with the BOGO. Other times it'll go on sale for out competing stores at $1.77 or even $1.67 per gallon. My hippos love Tribe!

I'm late to the party too, but did enjoy the smell of your fresh bread. Dad is from Spain, and bread has always been key to every one of our meals. He likes it crunchy, but for me the fresher the better! That last comment may or may not be why I enjoy the peeps around here so much What food do I miss? Dad's Paella. Dad never went to near the kitchen when I was growing up, and still doesn't. But there was one dish that he could really cook. Paella. He didn't do it often, and was very critical of his own paella (especially the rice), but whenever he made one it was so delicious. The last one he made was about 4 years ago and was one of the first times my DW met the family. Dad made his special dish, and for some reason put in extra calimari. DW doesn't care much for seafood, but wanted to make a good impression so choked down every last tentacle with a smile on her face. *makes note to ask dad to make another*

I'm not much for seafood either, but a friend of ours had us over for dinner one night, to thank us for helping his autistic son get some badges and rank at Scout camp. He's from Puerto Rico, and made some paella, and it was WONDERFUL!! Even my picky kids loved it, calamari and all.

I've seen recipes with chicken and sausages, but the paella I had in Spain was all seafood. I did an exchange with my school and the family I stayed with would make this for Friday for the midday meal (which was always bigger than the evening meal). She'd go to the market and get whatever was fresh to put in it. I loved these little blue clams and usually she had crawfish in it as well as squid and mussels and stuff. It was totally yummy. It's a tribe creation!

Of course not, Silly! No, I have a Bosch Concept 7 machine - I love it! It kneads it pretty well, and I just have to do a little kneading before putting it in the bowl to rise. We had a bread machine long ago, and used it, but then DH overloaded it one day when we were making dough for breadsticks.. sad to say, the machine is still taking up space in my pantry - even though it is broken. I have a tough time throwing stuff away. My hippos love Tribe!I made more bread last night, so you can have a fresh slice, er end, this morning!
