Despite Ruben winning, and I believe he won legitimately, considering it was such a small margin, I was a HUGE Clay Aiken fan, wanted him to win from the beginning. But I do have issue with Fox and "American Idol" with some of their ventures this year, along with Post-Idol marketing.(1) With Clay and Ruben's singles out on the same day (I bought my copy of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" just an hour ago!!), it's obvious they want to make it a sales race. As of yesterday, Amazon.com reported Clay Aiken having the #1 single followed by Ruben's. I don't know if it has changed, but it shows an edge with Clay's fan base.
(2) The day following the "American Idol" finale, the "American Idol" website posted a poll asking who you wished would win, Ruben or Clay. That day, again I don't know if it has changed, Clay had a 51% to 49% lead in who the public think should have won.
(3) The episode when Ruben was in the bottom 2, there was a HUGE issue I had with that. Not just because Ruben didn't belong in the Bottom 2 (it was a huge surprise), but the fact that Ryan Seacrest repeatedly kept saying, "AMERICA, VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT TO WIN", implicitly telling them, "Make sure this doesn't happen again", which is obviously not fair. I knew from then on Ruben would win because after Ryan's (and I'm guessing "American Idol"'s pleads), Ruben's already huge fan base, will only multiply because they are told to vote, and only so frequesntly after Ruben found himself in the bottom 2.
I remember last season Justin Guarini was in the Borrom 2 next to Ryan Starr in a neck-and-neck race for who would be eliminated that round. As much as Justin was adored by everybody (well it seemed like everybody), I don't remember public outcries for, "MAKE SURE YOU VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT TO WIN!"
Now I'm not hating on Ruben, Ruben has a magnificent voice, while not very versatile or malleable, magnificent nonetheless. There are just a few shifty things I noticed, but then again, there were all these shifty tidbits that kept popping up after the 2000 presidential election! Go Figure!
Hey, the vote margin was so slim, they may as well be "Co-Idols"
