Fantasia's brother?I would find it odd he'd be in the top 50 given this tidbit from Simon Cowell in the news Unfortunately, "he was terrible, absolutely dreadful," Cowell said. "I remember thinking, 'Oh, great, Fantasia's brother's coming in' and it was all fantastic until he started singing and then I think we disputed the fact that he really was Fantasia's brother because he hasn't got his sister's talent." http://www.nypost.com/seven/01102008/tv/trust_simon_672132.htm They say he auditioned in Dallas so we should see that tonight and see if he got passed on by Randy and Paula. You really never know how good the spoilers are going to be as some of the poor folks in Jim's Casino found out this week.

6. "RE: VFTW AI 7 Plants" |
LAST EDITED ON 01-16-08 AT 05:47 PM (EST)Even ignoring the fact that we have no similar analysis of earlier seasons' Top 50's to base a comparision on and no idea who many of these folks will end up in the Top 24, given the site's purpose, the article is obviously pretty fundamentally biased -- it's expecting to read impartial information about Barack Obama on Hillary Clinton's campaign site or vice versa (or swap your favorite two Republican candidates in if you wish). Cowell and Jackson's personal comments aside, the show's eligiblity rules only require you not have any current recording or talent management agreements -- and that requirement has been well publicized before. I'm going strictly off memory, but I'd say lots of former season contestants in at least most of the show's last few seasons have had prior experience similar to all of the non-Carly Hennessy examples cited by VTFW. Heck, all you have to do is look at last season's winner for an example. Jordin had previously performed with a Michael Smith, THREE-TIME Grammy-winning singer whose been nominated many more times. His own website even mentions how he first met her when George Huff -- another former Idol contestant -- was at his house. Not to mention that being the daughter of multi-millionaire former NFL player alone also likely gave Jordin access (or created access) to more "connections" than just about eveyone cited on VFTW's list. Several of the VTFW examples -- like the Top 50 including some former Star Search, Nashville Star, and The One contestants and one girl performing in a show with Kat McPhee when they were both teens -- seem pretty weak. Is everyone forgetting Season 4's Top 24: http://www.eonline.com/news/archive/article/index.jsp?uuid=8480d2e5-3128-4776-ba1c-197664feb92e ...that group included two former Star Search contestants, a former Your Big Break winner, and Ozzie Smith's kid. Plus it also had Constantine (who had theater experience), Bo Bice (who'd opened for Warrant, and performed and recorded with Allman Brothers Band keyboardist Johnny Neal) Vonzell Solomon (who had previously released an album), Joseph Murina (who'd appeared on Showtime at the Apollo), and -- very briefly -- Mario Vasquez. Like the FEBRUARY 2005 E! News story stated: "Experience is not against Idol rules. Contestants can be veterans of record and management contracts, as long as they're unsigned when they present themselves to Simon Cowell and company."

11. "RE: VFTW AI 7 Plants" |
LAST EDITED ON 01-18-08 AT 02:48 AM (EST)Using the term "plant" means you're alleging that the contestants were "planted." And alleging that the producers deliberately covertly sought out failed singers "who'd already had a shot at stardom" -- which is what "planted" implies and what VFTW is directly charging -- is a huge allegation, IMHO. More completely laughable is VFTW's claim that the show is doing it "to try to prevent a Vote for the Worst takeover." That's pretty cocky talk for site that, despite Howard Stern's support, couldn't even get Sanjaya -- a contestant that, for better or worse, a lot of appeal to many non-VFTW Idol viewers -- into the Top 6 last year. "Planting" would also be a far more significant (IMHO, at least) issue than whether they subsequently "downplayed" it or not. The show's primary promotion -- and original subtitle -- is that it's searching for a superstar. If you re-read the VFTW story, it artfully uses a half a dozen obsure Cowell and Jackson quotes of the last few years -- half a dozen of the tens of thousands of media quotes they've probably given over that time -- to try and claim the show has spent the last seven years wrapping itself in an "undiscovered talent" flag during every broadcast and advertisement, but that's hardly been the case. Part of this also comes down to how do you measure "undiscovered"? (and "hypocrisy" for that matter??) Seven years ago, Carly Hennessy sold 300 albums in a country of 300,000,000 people. Does that mean she's already been "discovered"? Exactly how many Idols fans had already "discovered" Carly Hennessy before her name came up a month ago? How many albums does VFTW think Taylor Hicks had sold out of his trunk in all his years of pre-Idol touring? I'm guessing it was more than Carly's 300. Do those not count? If a tree sings in the woods but no one hears it, was it really "discovered"? To me personally, VFTW's claim that these contestants are "no longer even remotely undiscovered talent" would be like trying to claim that because he had already bounced around Hollywood and had failed parts in a bunch of different TV shows before "ER," George Clooney "was no longer even remotely undiscovered" when he landed the "ER" role that launched his career. Besides his family, agent, former co-workers, etc., exactly who already knew of him at the time -- the customers dining at the tables he was probably waiting on before the "ER" gig came along? As far as the whole "professional" experience thing, Idol even has a FAQ about this on americanidol.com:
Q: I've noticed that several contestants have professional music experience, including TV appearances and on Broadway, I thought you were only looking for amateur performers? A: In order to be eligible, the contestants are not permitted to have any CURRENT recording or talent management agreements.

12. "RE: VFTW AI 7 Plants" |
I do think the general consensus that there was a lack of talent last year, compared to some of the previous years, could play a role in making sure we get a lot of people with some sort of experience and talent into the mix. I dunno that AI actually went out and recruited specifically for that, but given that they know people who know people it wouldn't be hard to point out the success some idols have had and say if you know anyone that would be like that with enough exposure encourage them to try out.One would expect that people who actually have been through the ringer of auditioning and performing would tend to do well, after all most people have to work on that skill regardless of how much talent they have. I don't think any "lets put out the word we want talent" would have to be only to mess with the worsters. Looking at what happened with ratings and the general "Idol is done for" talk they would know they need to have things pop this year. After all there is money at stake here. What do people expect that they will find the 24 people who aren't likely to sell any albums and put them up as the best in the nation? After all, show business, even reality TV show business is going to be all about the money. Getting marketable people who sell records is going to be a big part of the motivation of the producers. I've really never thought the show was about anything else no matter how people interpret the open casting calls, etc. Given the number of times Simon and Randy get interviewed I would expect there would be some comments in the press that could be used to prove pretty much any point you want to make. I thought from Corvis' post over on the Individual one of them was shown auditioning last night.Sounds like they are having a "best of the rest" before the Hollywood round so we may see some of them there. We don't always see everyone in the top 24's audition, hopefully we see them all before the first performance night. There is a theory out there that some people's auditions can't be shown because whatever song they used doesn't get cleared for on the air use. I also think that when they have "good stories" for people that do not make the top 24 they do like to use them, so may hold off on stuff about people we will be seeing later. A lot of early exposure during the course of a show is sometimes not a good sign when it comes to longevity. Agman's like a brother, Your best friend forever, Making the sigs, the sigs that you like.

I always felt bad for the contestants that didn't get a plug before voting began. Simply because with a few I was already emotionally invested with the ones I had seen before. I do hope they give us a bit more during Hollywood on the ones that actually made it thru. Agman took me to the islands

He was on there. Isn't he that younger guy with the black glasses? I can't remember his name though.
