"A firing offense in Miami?"
LAST EDITED ON 07-29-05 AT 07:24 PM (EST)

Big drama in the newspaper world over the events that took place at the Miami Herald this week:

Miami Newspaper Case Sparks Ethics Debate
Paper becomes the news in a city stranger than fiction

Fascinating story. All I can say is that I would've taped the call, and it looks to me like the only fools who should be fired are the Knight-Ridder yes men who run the Miami Herald.

Oh, and this wouldn't have happened if John Knight were still alive.

Edited to fix links.

This entire situation is so sad.

Although Jim is not a close personal friend I've shared a few beers with him and know him as a brilliant and compassionate guy. All his friends are heartbroken.

Teele screwed up, but not worthy of suicide. Of course, I'm not Teele.

I don't understand why the guy was fired. Seriously. Wasn't he just doing his job? Am I not understanding something?

I can't imagine how miserable he must be, having lost his job and at least feeling like he contributed to someone taking their own life. But "feeling like he contributed" is natural human guilt reflex. He is not, in fact, responsible for the guy's death. IMHO.

Jim didn't tell Teele he was taping the conversation. It seems that's against the law. He probably would have cleared it with Teele, but there was this gun and....

I see. Kind of like when they mention taping my conversation with Bank of America representatives "to ensure quality." Not sure if they mean my quality, or theirs.

From what I understand, Jim and Teele were pretty close friends. Jim supported him through some tough times.

Seems like this one was a bit too tough for Teele.

6. "Forget about John Knight..."
KITT would have never let it get to this point.

Prolly in bad taste, but I've always found KnightRidder a funny name for a press outlet.
