"Shanghai Route Map"
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-05 AT 09:20 AM (EST)

Includes the Peace Hotel across the road from the Peace Hotel South and the Pujiang Hotel (probaby where the teams stayed for the Pitstop, as it was listed in the credits). Not sure where the hotel near Yuyuan is though.

There's a lot of backtracking to and fro across the river this leg, but everything's very close. They only hung around the city centre.

Read from red-orange-yellow-green.

Nice job, Neobie! Looks like Kris and Jon almost might have been better off to walk/run! (If they had any idea where they were going.)

I guess no one thought of buying, or was able to buy, an English map of Shanghai? Surely that hotel near the gardens might have had one. I know that's easy for a Monday morning quarterback like me to think of, but still, we saw racers do that on other legs. Could it have been that they knew they needed to be frugal because of the money for cabs? Just speculating.

ETA: When I watched the episode again, I saw that the racers got a map along with one of the clues (to the Detour, IIRC). But it sure didn't seem to be of much use to them, at least from what we saw.

Problem is probably the street signs are only in Chinese. Even if you have a map labeled in both lanuages one little slipup in your location and it becomes a lot of work relocating yourself on the map, moving in a cab at the same time just makes it worse. On the other hand you are right that using a map and walking probably would have worked better for Kris and Jon, but how were they to know before hand what a bad taxi driver they would get?

In this case I don't think it was K&J fault and they were being too nice about being in another country - this driver was bad! I mean they showed him the name of the place directly off thier instructions and he gave no sign that he did not understand what was written.

Not exactly... Signs in Shanghai are all labelled in both English and Chinese, with 'helpful (to the racers)' indications of cardinal points on each signpost.

I am almost sure that the taxi driver had them for a ride (they love doing that to foreigners), or didn't know where he was going. Quite a lot of taxi drivers are new from the countryside.
