LAST EDITED ON 05-09-05 AT 02:43 PM (EST)We went March 30th through April 3 and stayed at the Paris. It was beautiful and resonabl for us. It is on what is now the main strip, across the street from the Bellagio, next door to Bally's and really not too far of a walk from most other casinos such as Venetian. Their casino is ok but the food is fabulous as well as the pool area and shops. I woman I work with went to see the Risque show that is at the Paris and said it was good. We did not take in any shows as we were there to gamble!! The casino I liked best that had good gambling and nice rooms was the Rio. Although, the Rio is futher away from the strip and you would have to take the free Shuttle to Harrahs to go to other places. Be prepared to do tons of walking. I wore my slut shoes way to much and my poor tooties payed the price! lol ETA: we also ate and visited NY NY and really liked that hotel. What was great about NY NY was you would never have to leave to do anything! Plus the rollor coaster was fun! courtesy of RollDdice

Paris and Aladdin have one of the best locations on the strip - central to everything - and they don't cost as much as Bellagio. Hotwire etc often have package deals however that will get your airfare and a few nights at one of the big resorts. If you can get a good deal, I strongly recommend Bellagio - the Venetian may be just a LITTLE bit nicer but I think Bellagio has a better location.Oh yeah and go see Penn and Teller. One of the best shows "on" the strip and pretty reasonable when compared to Zoomanity at $130 a pop.

I love, love, love Vegas. *Sigh*Centrally located: Treasure Island, MGM Grand, which I think would be in that middle ground you're looking for. I've stayed at the Stardust and at the Stratosphere. In both we had suites, but I would still consider them on the lower-end scale. Do not stay at Circus, Circus. Also, I've heard the Luxor is nice. They had a nice buffet, and I won money there. Vegas blocks are very, very long, so you'll get lots of excercise. And while it's hot there in the summer, it's not the humid hot. If I were to go again, I would most certainly stay at the the one they use in the TV show, Las Vegas -- the Mandalay Bay The Belagio had the best breakfast buffet, a little expensive at $25 per person, but so worth it. And if you're going to go out to eat dinner, the Top of the World at the top of the Stratosphere tower is a must -- About $125 for two and get a window seat. Icey bounced my DiceyLook at vegas.com and expedia.com for deals.

LAST EDITED ON 05-09-05 AT 02:55 PM (EST)We stayed at Circus Circus. It was nice, a little old, but maybe better for couples going with kids. There is an amusement park in the hotel, and it was very cool. If you go, be sure to pay a little extra to stay in the towers, as opposed to the manor rooms...the manors are behind the main hotel in little two story buildings. The tower rooms are in the main part of it. It's up on the northern end of the strip, so getting anywhere required a lot of walking, but this is the case anywhere. Of the two others listed, NYNY is on the other end of the strip, and Paris is right in the middle. NYNY has the cool roller coaster, and if I remember, the hotel itself is pretty cool. The Paris is beautiful inside. Don't stay at the Stratosphere. ETA: We went to Cirque du Soleil: Mystère at Treasure Island. It was beautiful! Very artsy. If I went back, I would go to O at the Bellagio. They have a watery theme there. DO NOT MISS: The dancing fountains at Bellagio...go more than once! Also, go to the Venetian and take a gondola ride. Beav: Proud member of the inoffensive OT Triumvirate.

Circus Circus is at the end of the strip. Don't stay there. The Stratosphere is cheap cheap cheap but again at the end of the strip. I would go for NY NY or Treasure Island. MGM is not bad either. But they were under lots of construction when I was there in November, so maybe pass on that. You must go to Old Downtown and see the Fremont Street Experience. If you don't you will have missed out greatly. It is an experience. You can get most places by trolley and shuttles. Don't pay for a taxi if you can help it because by the time the weekend is over you would have been able to rent four cars. Try to take in as much of each hotel as you can. The Bellagio is beautiful. You must stand outside and see the water/light show. Another must. Have fun, tell the Aladdin that I will be back soon. Go to the Rio. It is off the strip and you will need a taxi but it is a fun place. If you like buffets, The Rio is the place. MGM has the Tv walk and you may get picked to do screenings. Go up in the Eiffel Tower if you get a chance at Paris. Great view. also if you can, go to the top of the Strat. You will see your house. Even if you lived in Africa, you could see your house from the STrat.

(That's the sound and light show I refer to elsewhere.) Go to the Rio. It is off the strip and you will need a taxi but it is a fun place. Not necessarily. You can catch a shuttle from Harrah's, although it can be crowded. The Rio is a fun place, but I liked the casino in the Orleans better.

When are you going? The month really matters. Rates come way down in the summer due to lack of conventions especially in August. Also you will pay way less per night for Sunday through Thursday vs. Friday-Saturday.Aladdin, Flamingo, Monte Carlo and good middle of the strip choices- in the $80 to $90 range. The Venetian is offering some $100 weekday rooms in the summer. This is absolutley a terrific bargain as I believe their rooms are all suites. Check the Hotel/Casino website directly for the best rates you're going to find. You could do an Expedia or Travelocity check first, but you'll do just as good if not better booking directly. You don't have to rent a car. You can get a taxi from the airport for less than $10 I think. The rest of the time, just walk around and look at everything. It's really a site. There is also a monorail now. site to check out free stuff to do http://www.vegas.com/attractions/

It's kind of early to book for October. Most of the deals out there now are only through August. My advice is search on the websites of the hotels you like and sign up for their email offers. Some of the hotels will have email only specials- that's how I found out about the $100 Venetian deal. You will pay an extra $100 a night or so for a Friday or Saturday stay. Also keep in mind Vegas has a 9% room tax.

Depends how much you want to spend.***** Bellagio **** Paris *** Orleans I wouldn't stay in anything less than *** for reasons I think are obvious. Since I spend so little of my time in the hotel room I go to a *** (Orleans or Excalibur) and spend my money on gambling, booze and women. Your priorities may be different. Depriving the public of my talent is letting the terrorists win. Nothing impresses a $400/hour prostitute more than a $40/night hotel room.

Have fun, Kimmah! We've stayed at the Rio, but that's mainly because my in-laws have gotten comps there. This last time when coming back from Hawaii, we stayed at the Orleans. It's off the Strip, but you can get there easily enough with a shuttle to the Barbary Coast. The same group also owns the Gold Coast, across the street from the Rio. My FIL said the room rates were cheaper at the Orleans than at the Rio. Very nice casino, bowling alley (!), movie theater complex, and pool/hot tub area at the Orleans. And it's got several nice restaurants. Second the idea of taking in the Bellagio fountain shows. Their conservatory is worth looking at as well (check out the oversized Buggy on a leaf!). Also, if you can get to Fremont Avenue (the old downtown; the Pioneer and Golden Nugget are there), they have sound and light shows every hour that are quite spectacular. We enjoyed Lance Burton's magic show at the Monte Carlo, as well as the Excalibur's medieval performance. Going to the top of the Stratosphere was cool, but we didn't bother with any of the rides. And just politely ignore the folks handing out the cards. HTH!

Treasure Island is a great combination of "nice" and "not terribly expensive." The Mirage, also.Do not, under any circumstances, stay at the New Frontier. Paris would be a nice option, but I'm not sure how it compares to TI price-wise. If you can afford it, the Venetian or Belaggio.

I've only been twice. First time was to Hard Rock Hotel. Funnest.Hotel.Ever. Great pool, music, theme, food etc. However it is WAY OFF the strip but there are plenty of shuttles. Second time I stayed at the Excalibur because when I was there the first time i won $880 on quarter slots so I felt I would be lucky there. I was...no big lump sum but lots of $20-$40 wins. Probably came away about $200 up. Any hotel is good. Treasure Island is good and I think you can use the Mirage pool as well. Mirage is nice and smells all cocanutty. Since I have last been there tons of newer hoteld like the Bellagio and Mandelay Bay which I would love to try out. I found the loosest slots downtown and at my favorite place "Slots O' Fun" where you can get a hot dog and a Corona for $1.75. Vegas seems like the perfect place for a birthday trip! I've been to Vegas more times than I can count. My favorite hotel that is still standing would be Treasure Island. 2nd fav is Monte Carlo Also, Bally's is nice, and I believe there is a new monorail going all the way from MGM down to Paris or so. Dump = Westward Ho, but they gave us free drinks any time of day or night, and we didn't have to gamble to get them. Better = Stratosphere Do the ride at the Top. Big Shot. Way cool! There are other nice places, but they are off the strip. Downton is cheap, but for a first time, I wouldn't stay there. Do go visit though. But don't take the public bus. Very scary. Have fun, bring very good walking shoes! another syren masterpiece

thanks so much, bawdy!I'm signed up on several hotel sites. I've just made an excel sheet with all of the hotels listed here (yes , so so, and no columns). I'll start watching the sites and keep an eye on the priceline bidding at biddingfortravel.com and see what it looks like there. It will be a couple of months before bids start coming in for October anyway. The Venetian is booked for the week I'm going and that's the only 5* that comes up with any regularity on Priceline. The 4*s are Bally's, MGM Grand, Mirage, Treasure Island, Aladdin and NY NY. I wouldn't bid anything lower than a 4* on Priceline.Miscellaneous Ramblings --suppose I should get the whole London thing lined up first, though, eh?

I'm a pretty experienced Vegas traveler, though not on the level of knockers (where is she?).I've stayed at Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Flamingo Hilton, Treasure Island, The Mirage, and the Frontier. My advice is to stay away from anything north of Treasure Island, unless you stay at the new Wynn hotel. Mandalay Bay was by far the nicest and most memorable place we stayed, but it's at the end of the strip. Best overall value would be either Luxor or Treasure Island. All the strip hotels are connected in some way by monorail or moving walkway. If you are comfortable walking, anywhere you stay on the strip is fine, including Mandalay Bay. A rental car is a complete waste of money unles you're going on a day trip out of Vegas. The walk between each casino and its parking lot is prolly longer than just walking from casino to casino. Plus, traffic near the strip is terrible and navigating is difficult. Our favorite activity in Vegas is walking/people watching and eating at the buffets. The best buffets are at the Bellagio, Paris, and Aladdin's World Market. If you're there for Sunday brunch, try Bally's Sterling Brunch buffet. It's VERY expensive - about $50, but very nice. Here's a review site: http://www.digitalcity.com/lasvegas/dining/venue.adp?sbid=93840 Handcrafted by RollDDice!

up there, look up there. I put in my two cents. I have so much more to say but it would take up so much room.Always ask for slot hosts and ask what it takes to get comped. If you play the tables, get a players card, if you play enough you get comped meals and stuff. Vegas.com is a help Don't put money in the slots in the airport too close to your flight. Just trust me on this one. I have found that The Aladdin seems to be the best deals. Nice rooms, good shopping center and Starbucks right outside the elevator area. Go to the the bar under the lamp and tell David I said hello. He makes a great Crown Royal Kamakazi. It's right by the bathrooms, the tables, the slots and you can hear the entertainment from upstairs at night. But be careful in the bathroom, you can see your stallmate through the reflection on the floor. Use and end stall. Make use of the monorail. You will be happy. Don't pick up what appear to be dollar bills out on the strip. They are flyers for hookers. *shrug* We didn't realize this when we were drunk. The next morning when we had a stack of "bills" on the nightstand, we realized what they were. Don't stay at the New Frontier, but gamble there. They have cheap blackjack tables even on the weekends. Most importantly: do not start at Mandalay Bay and go into each casino and put $20 into the machines at the bars to see how much booze you can suck out of each casino for $20 between Mandalay Bay and Paris. It can be done but it makes for a terrible next day.

I haven't been for several years, but we've stayed at Bally's (nice), Flamingo (twice, and also nice) and Luxor (never again). Avoid Luxor if you have to stay in the actual pyramid shaped building. The sideways elevators, and slanted walls made me dizzy for days. I could barely get out of bed the last day there. We've rented a car there before, and taken trips to Hoover Dam and Laughlin. Laughlin is not worth the drive AT ALL. The Hoover Dam tour was interesting though. We also stopped at a small town casino on the drive to Hoover, and they had low limit tables, and really friendly dealers, who would give tips as you played. You don't need a car, but as cozy as the map looks, it seems like miles between hotels when you're walking. Take advantage of the monorail thingy. I'm pretty sure they had stations at Bally's and MGM when I was there last, but I think it must have expanded by now.

Agree about the Luxor. Another danger of the Luxor is being blonde. It is natural to want to walk over to the window and look at the street. But since it is pyramid shaped, your face hits the window loooong before the rest of your body. As a blonde, I did this more than once, in fact more than once per hour. *grin* And King Tut's tomb is a boob of an attraction. Stay away from it too. But, the Excalibur, right next door, has a pretty good breakfast buffet. It aint fancy by any means but it is cheap and lots of decent food.P.S. If you play poker machines, ask a casino host for the 9/6 poker machines. Those have the best odds. Those are the payouts on the flush and the full house (or the full house and the straight? ) I think the flush and the full house. Anyhow, ask for the 9/6 machines, they will know.

i just want to tell you that if you're on the strip and want to gamble w/o spending a billion dollars, go into the boardwalk. it's towards the NY-NY/MGM end of the strip and they have tables w/ $3 mins. this is the cheapest on the strip (that i know of). else, you have to trek it to 'old vegas' aka downtown.and on easter one year, a party of 12 of us went to the bellagio buffet and *all* got sick within 48 hours. i had to write a nastygram to get a refund. $50/person = food poisoning? i think not. hmm... what else? oh, the hard rock isn't that far. if you're into timeshare, my parents have a timeshare that let them stay at the grand desert. it was half built, but it was *very* nice and featured a free shuttle all hours of the day to both the airport and to harrah's (on the strip). ~ cq All I do is provide headline worthy quotes and sound bites, one after another in and endless stream of creative almost prose-like spurts of self serving ego stroking diatribes. - shakes

I love Vegas, even the bad parts! If you have plenty of money to spend on a hotel, then I think everyone has made some nice suggestions. If not, I think basically most of the older hotels/casinos on the main strip are okay. First time I went I stayed at the Stardust during the week and it was very cheap compared to others I considered. Basically all I did was sleep/shower there, the rest of my time was spent walking the strip and exploring the nicer casinos. The last time I was there I had my dog with me so my only choice was the Motel 6 across from the MGM!!! Whatever you do, wear comfortable shoes. If not you will regret it! I'll walk the entire strip, stopping at virtually every hotel and casino, in an entire day. Probably best to half it and walk it in two days, but there is something to see in pretty much every casino. I also highly recommend the Fremont Experience downtown. Spend one night there. The light show is fantastic. The casinos/hotels are much older downtown, but it's a nice diversion. I do much better gambling downtown. Have fun!
