-- with my name on it. And anyone else, at any time, just because it's so easy to set up. It's all about spam. As I understand certain laws (and in this case, I sorta hope I misunderstood them), getting caught with any amount of child pornography, physical or computer-stored, is sufficient to get your name added to the 'Do not approach: potential rapist' list. And it seems to be a lot easier to get search warrants for E-mail files and the like than it used to be, because everyone's afraid of sex offenders and every opportunity to find one and get their name on the big list will be taken. Say the right words to the right ears, and someone will at least look. So this morning, I got some spam in my Inbox, with the stomach-churning title of Little girl seduced by her daddy. That sort of thing gets your attention. It also gets the Delete function going within seconds. G'bye, unwanted, sickening spam. But... ...how do I prove it's just spam? To wit, how would I, in a court of law, prove that this was a nauseating randomly-received message and not something I specifically requested to have sent to my account? That's proving a negative. Anyone looking at my files at the wrong time could prove I had the thing: my proving I didn't want it is something else entirely -- something a lot harder to do. Which got me thinking that if you really, really wanted to ruin someone's life, you could start bombarding their E-mail account with untracable child pornography, and then call in the hounds. Anyone checking their files would find lotsa untracable child pornography, which the victim would then have to prove they didn't ask for despite their having a ton of it on hand and more arriving with every fresh mail check, possession is nine-tenths of the law, welcome to the list and whatever other penalties your state has. And then I started thinking about how easy this would be for any competent computer programmer to set up. And then I started thinking about how many competent computer hackers there are with time on their hands, a twisted sense of humor, and no cares about what happens to any of their victims, as evidenced by all the just-for-fun viruses seen every day. Which was shortly followed by a vision of the long list of people who'd just like to take others down. Right after that is when I started to feel a little more worried about the world than usual...

That was you? No, I hear ya here Estee... I always worry about what my kids might be accidentally exposed to when they search for things online on sites such as Google (for example, a few months ago typing "cereal" with the filters on got my kid a pic of a naked woman with cereal and milk covering her, ahem, not-so-private-anymore-part). How do you stop it when our 11 year old looks up an underage actress and uncovers a photo of her face photoshopped onto a nude body? Do we, as parents, get labelled as pervs in the eye of the government/police as a result?
Before I had spyware block, I used to worry that we'd get busted one day in the future whenever a sexy ad would pop up and it'd show on our history with a sex-related name. Scratch and sniff "Tsk, tsk. Pepe's messing with the newbies again." Spidey, 3/30/05

5. "Why sex offender lists make me uncomfortable" |
1)An 18 year old who has sex with a 16 year old can be listed as a sex offender, even if he/she lied about her age or they got married afterwards.2) False sense of security. Most sex offenders offend multiple times before they are caught. 3) Another false sense of security. Most child abusing type sex offenders are someone the child knows, often very well and is invited into the house. The best defence is arming children with an ability to talk to mom or dad about anyone who makes them uncomfortable. 4) Out of date lists/addresses. 5) Stolen/mistaken identity can lead to a person being on a list, especially if it is not a police sanctioned lit and they were never informed. 6) False accusations, especially during bitter, bitter divorces. 7) False sense of fear. The chances of a child being randomly abducted is less than that of being struck by lightening. 8) Disparity between rich and poor. A rich person who commits the same crime can be let off scott free, while a poor person may suffer for the rest of their life. 9) My feeling that spending time in jail may be punishment enough. 10) What Wheezy said, and it wouldn't even take a hacker. Someone with your credit card number and email address (or just your email address) could sign you up for a tonne of illegal pornography in a couple hours. Syren loves me and Ice Cat too! I find that the child rapists don't complain as much if they're left as giant radioactive craters.-J Slice (and Bob)

6. "You missed one..." |
they make my job harder, at times. otherwise 1. In most states this can't happen. I could do a breakdown list of those it could if you want... 2. yes and no, depending on the type, I know of a number of ones who were caught the first time, or even BEFORE they assaulted. 3. I agree completely. Most child sex offenders I know are step fathers, or bf's of single mothers. 4. Again varies on state, our list is maintained by agents/specialists and kicks people into a "non compliance" status too often, just to make us verify the info as being correct. 5. Is why Wisconsin doesn't "sell" their lists, actually local law enforcement lists are generally less accurate than our state wide one. 6. I've known only a couple of offenders who passed a polygraph about being innocent of their offense, but admitted to other previously unknown victims. Not one true "innocent". 7. Again, I agree completely. 8. Mark Chumura who? sorry weltek. 9. Generally? no. Of course I've had judges go with lighter sentences because the individual will have to register for the rest of their life... give me a break. 10. Addressed partially in post #2 above. I'm not sure what e-mail service you use, but the one I have allows you to "report junk mail" with a couple of clicks. This way there should be a traceable record that you reported the unsolicited material to someone in a position of authority.
