9. "Loved it like crazy.....and other thoughts" |
What's on the island? I think that anything supernatural might be a bit too hokey for this supercool series. Maybe some kind of human genetics experiment gone wrong? If it was a hungry animal, wouldn't it have eaten up the pilot?Suspicion: that guy sitting out in the rain is an escaped convict (the handcuffs from the preview). Maybe with a heart of gold, or something like that. This is going to be a challenging show to write in many respects. First, it will be tough to keep up the terror of the unseen as well as focus on the survival stories and character development (which are of more interest to me). Second, they can't really add new characters if things get stale. So, Heather locklear will not be able to join the show to boost ratings. Third, they're going to have to work to avoid the whole "Gilligan's Island" phenomenon of botched escape plans weeke after week. Anyway, I couldn't even sleep because I was thinking about it and inserting myself into the plot. What a great show! Any other thoughts? Handcrafted by RollDdice

Yes! Loved it, very Stephen King-ish. Is this a real tv show or just a limited run show? Someone here at work is telling me that it is only like a mini-series.I love Matthew Fox too....grrrowl! There are so many possiblities to go in. Do you think they will ever show what that is? I don't know if they should. I love leaving things to my imagination. >Yes! Loved it, very Stephen King-ish. Is this a >real tv show or just a limited run show? It's a real show, although your friend might have been confused because some reporters have been saying the "Gilligan's Island"-like "stuck on an island" idea might get old and therefore the idea might have been better served as a "The 4400"-like series of miniseries thing. It's from the same guy that does "Alias" -- and he's also the same guy that did "Felicity" for The WB a few years ago, that's why you keep seeing Greg Grunberg, the guy who played the roomate on "Felicity" and the FBI agent on "Alias" popping up as the pilot on "Lost" The show was supposed to be a two-hour premiere but ABC wanted to premiere it the same week as The Bachelor and The Bachelor (the more established show) already had a two-hour premiere of its own, so, faced with either moving the show to another night, delaying it for a week, or splitting the pilot, ABC opted to split the pilot. Btw, the tropical location of this show looked great in HDTV, I really wish CBS would get around to springing for the $$$ to film Survivor in HDTV...

12. "RE: Ratings were great" |
>TVGuide Online reported that Lost crushed >all the other networks with >18 million viewers. It did -- ABC actually seems to have a big hit on it's hands -- for reference, NBC's Joey only opened to about 18.5 million and dropped to 15.3 million last week. But it did get edged out as the night's most watched new series premiere by CSI: NY, which came out of nowhere to average about 18.5 million viewers and crush Law & Order (which still managed about 15.7 million viewers.) Folks thought that the new CSI would hurt L&O, but I don't don't remember anyone thinking it would defeat it right out of the gates. Unfortunately the news wasn't as good for ABC's reality show, as The Bachelor blew its huge lead-in and only averaged about 8.something million viewers during it's premiere -- the bloom has definitely fallen off that rose. -SB

Lost really grabbed me...I too am glad it lived up to the hype, but I knew it would with Abrams behind it. The characters have me pretty intriqued...like what is up wtih the dog, the handcuffs, the man with the orange peel, etc? seems like a lot of unanswered questions which of course make me highly anticipate next week's episode...

21. "ABC press release for Episode 1 ratings" |
LAST EDITED ON 09-23-04 AT 06:53 PM (EST)This is probably the first non-reality ABC show that I've bothered to follow since Push, Nevada... Unfortunately, despite releasing their press releases at the end of the day, the lazy publicists over at ABC always tend to only reference the preliminary fast affiliate ratings that come out first thing in the morning (the ones that viewers of Showtime's old "Beggars & Choosers" drama used to see the network exec guy listening to via phone while in the bathroom every morning) rather than the final national ratings that come out early in the afternoon... probably because everyone at the hit-starved network left work early to go celebrate ================================================
Quick Take for Wednesday, September 22, 2004 (Based on Fast Affiliate Ratings) Viewers Find "Lost," Making ABC a Dominant No. 1 in its Hour Across the board "Lost" Draws the Largest Audience Share of Any Program on the Night Across Each of the Key Adult Demos, Besting CBS' "CSI: NY" and NBC's "Law & Order" "Lost" Qualifies as ABC's Most-Watched Drama Debut in 9 Years, While Generating the Net's Largest Audience in the Time Period in 3-1/2 Years "Lost" is TV's Most-Watched Non-franchise Drama Opening in Over 5 Years And the Highest-Rated Among Adults 18-49 in 4 Years "Lost" (8:00-9:00 p.m.) The series debut of ABC's "Lost" ranked a dominant No. 1 in its hour across every relevant demographic time period. Drawing an average audience of 18.0 million viewers and earning a 6.5 rating, 19 share among Adults 18-49, "Lost" topped its nearest competition in the hour by 6.8 million viewers and by 71% in Adults 18-49 (CBS - 11.2 million & 3.8/11). "Lost" built audience throughout its telecast, gaining 1.4 million viewers (17.3 million to 18.7 million) and 15% among Adults 18-49 (6.1/19 to 7.0/19) from its first half-hour to its second. * "Lost" attracted the largest audience for any ABC drama premiere in 9 years - since 9/19/95 w/"Murder One." Among Adults 18-49 (6.5/19) and Adults 25-54 (7.9/21), it was ABC's top-rated drama debut in 5 years - since "Once and Again" on 9/21/99. * "Lost" qualifies as the most-watched non-franchise drama debut on any network in more than 5 years (since 1/8/99 w/"Providence") and the highest-rated non-franchise drama opening among Adults 18-49 in 4 years (since 10/8/00 w/"Ed"). * "Lost" delivered ABC's largest audience in the Wednesday 8:00-9:00 p.m. hour in 3-1/2 years - since 3/7/01 w/"Millionaire." The debut earned ABC's top Adult 18-49 rating in the hour since the season finale of "The Bachelorette" with Trista on 2/19/03. In fact, ABC was up by 4.4 million viewers and by 12% in Adults 18-49 over its delivery in the hour on the same night a year ago (13.6 million & 5.8/17 on 9/24/03) * Since it aired in an early time period with lower viewing levels (lower potential ratings), it's important to note that "Lost" delivered the largest audience share of any program on Wednesday night, topping CBS' debut of "CSI: NY" and NBC's back-to-back season premiere episodes of "Law & Order" across each of the key Adult demographics: Adults 18-34 (16 share), Adults 18-49 (19 share) and Adults 25-54 (21 share). In the Adult 18-49 rating, it was the second-highest-rated show of the night, topping both episodes of NBC's "Law & Order" and finishing just behind CBS' series premiere of "CSI: NY" (6.9/18). * "Lost's" performance among Adults 18-49 represents ABC's strongest number from 8:00-9:00 p.m. on a season opening Wednesday night in 6 years - since 9/23/98. Among Adults 25-54 it was ABC's best number in that hour on an opening Wednesday in 9 years - since 9/20/95.

27. "Ack -- Aaron Spelling almost ruined this show..." |
...by producing it!http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2004-09/23/12.30.tv Damon Lindelof, the co-creator and executive producer of ABC's Lost, told SCI FI Wire that creating the show with J.J. Abrams occurred in an accelerated time frame early this year. "I've been a huge fan of J.J.'s ever since Felicity and then Alias," Lindelof said in an interview. "I had been waiting for the opportunity to sit down and meet him, and I dreamed of collaborating with him. I love his sensibility and character-focused writing style." Lindelof said that former ABC chief Lloyd Braun came up with the idea for a show built around a plane crash on an island in the South Pacific. "Basically, the network mentality was, 'Let's do Survivor: The Drama,'" Lindelof said. "I believe they originally developed that idea with Aaron Spelling. I got a call in early February from an executive at ABC and was asked if I wanted to meet with J.J. about this crazy plane crash idea. They didn't like the way the idea developed with Spelling, so they wanted to start from scratch. I met with J.J., and we talked for about three hours, and we got really excited about it. We decided that aside from the island being a character, it was going to be all about the people." The duo came up with the concept for Lost, dealing with 48 survivors of a crash on a remote island. "This is why I've always responded to J.J.'s work," Lindelof said. "It's all about the characters. Over the course of a week, we broke a new story for the pilot and a very detailed outline. ABC read it and loved it and immediately green-lit the show. From that day, it was about five weeks later, and we were shooting the two-hour pilot." As for the day-to-day guidance of the show, Lindelof said that he will be running the series. "J.J. now has a whole empire to manage," he said, referring to Abrams' Alias, not to mention his upcoming feature-film directorial debut with Mission: Impossible 3 and a new TV project. "In the early going, he was very involved in what we were doing, but he is back to Alias now and is working on the pilot for The Catch. I've written the first episode after the pilot. My hope is to write more, but I want to focus on enabling the writing staff to infuse the show with their voices too." Lost airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

This show was so good! I can't wait for the next ep. It is nice to see a network show that is well-written. I'm loving guessing what the "monster" is--King Kong, LOL? The South Pacific is home to several islands/atolls that were used to test atomic bombs a few decades ago. These islands have pretty much been regrown with plant life but are still (I believe) off limits as far as any navigation charts are concerned. Maybe the monster is a genetic mutation of some kind? The yellow lab is confusing. But labs are a dog sometimes used by the military when they need a good swimming dog. So maybe there is an evil military presence taking advantage of the island's off-limits status to conduct their nasty experiments? They would not want the survivor's found or any publicity about "their" private island. Anyone else have a speculation? "It's not the voting that's democracy; it's the counting." --Josef Stalin

Awsome episode tonight. I love how they seem to be making every episode a guessing game. This second episode cleared alot up to me because I missed the first 20 minutes of the first episode and it sort of had me totally confused by the end of it. Now I'm not confused but very interested in what the monster on the island is. Whats the polar bear doing there, and what happened to the other plane or whatever that crashed on the island like 16 years ago. Can't wait till next weeks episode.

Me too. Totally hooked.I am trying to figure out what kind of power source would automatically broadcast a distress call for 16 years. I can't remember anything from RL 16 years ago that would work with the show concept. I also love a former Republican Guard as a Good Guy! And the woman was the prisoner? Fantastic! It looks like she gets identified in the next episode. I love when shows cast against stereotype. A polar bear? That was totally unexpected! I like how they are showing each person's story of the crash in flashback form. So, Kate is the prisoner. And the patient with the shrapnel is the marshall. The mean guy got the gun from him. The hobbit went backt to the cockpit section to retrieve his drug stash. The dog belongs to the little boy. And one of the creatures was a polar bear. Someone has been broadcasting a distess signal on the island in French for 16 years. Some kind of research scientists? Still don't know what the big creature is that attacked the pilot and put him in a tree. Next week the black women thinks her husband is still alive and someone has a briefcase of knives. Preview from ABC Wednesday, October 6, 8/7c "Tabula Rasa" Jack and Hurley discover an alarming secret about Kate, as the marshal's life hangs in the balance. Meanwhile Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Sayid, Boone and Shannon ponder the island's mysteries they've uncovered and worry that telling the other survivors will cause panic, and Locke's befriending of Walt disturbs Michael. what is Tabula Rasa?
don't forget they are re-airing the complete 2-hour season pilot on Sat Oct 2

Yes this show is a keeper! Is that fat guy the guy who played Lust on FOX's Herman's Head a few years ago? If so he is really heavy and I was wondering if some of that weight was makeup,it looked a little funny. If so then I would think that character will be on for awhile, maybe he will loose some of that weight! Did anyone notice the polar bear in the comic strip the boy was reading? Do you think this is some uncharted island near the South Pole that is also tropical? Or are they in a paralell universe? If the show runs awhile and they continue to show the crash through flashbacks will the flight attendents age? Do you think any of the people there were already on the island and are just blending in with the crash victims? I just love that this show gets me thinking. LAST EDITED ON 09-30-04 AT 11:40 PM (EST)My guess is that the polar bear and the other creatures are all related to the French distress signal. Either there was an earlier crash or some type of experimental outpost -- perhaps even related to investigating the impact of the atomic testing Swami mentioned -- but clearly something was happening. I enjoyed Ep2 and am defintitely hooked on the show, but noticed a couple of possible continuity gaffs. For example, they returned from the cockpit hike and and when asked, told the other survivors that there were "no survivors" on the cockpit section and didn't seem to mention anything about the pilot. Yet later, after Tough Guy shot the polar bear, Surfing Dude Brother asked if anyone thought the polar bear might have been what killed the pilot. I noticed a second inconsistency in Part 2 but can't remember it right now -- basically I'm wondering if a scene or two had to get cut after ABC made the decision to chop what was originally planned to be a two-hour premiere into a two-parter -- and if they will be included in Saturday's two-hour rebroadcast.

For example, they returned from the >cockpit hike and and when >asked, told the other survivors >that there were "no survivors" >on the cockpit section and >didn't seem to mention anything >about the pilot. Yet >later, after Tough Guy shot >the polar bear, Surfing Dude >Brother asked if anyone thought >the polar bear might have >been what killed the pilot. ...this made sense if you watched it closely. When surfer boy said that he looked to the hobbit for confirmation. The hobbit responded with a kind of "oops, I just got caught opening my mouth" kind of sheepish look. Then, the criminal girl kind of gave the hobbit a quick dirty look.
What I got from the scene was that the hobbit ran his mouth about what happened when he got back to the beach...and then he got caught when it was brought up in front of criminal girl. As for the polar bear.....I've been telling people for a month that there are some polar bear type creatures on the island based on a preview I saw back in May that showed about 10 of those creatures running through a field...but they all looked A LOT bigger than a normal polar bear.
Also, is there more than one gun on the island? Criminal girl took apart the one gun and gave part of it back to angry guy, but in the previews the US Marshal guy is pointing a gun at criminal girl??? Did he get the gun back or is there more than one gun? > > >I noticed a second inconsistency in >Part 2 but can't remember >it right now -- basically >I'm wondering if a scene >or two had to get >cut after ABC made the >decision to chop what was >originally planned to be a >two-hour premiere into a two-parter >-- and if they will >be included in Saturday's two-hour >rebroadcast.

I'm more and more thinking this show will have nothing to do with any kind of paranormal or otherworldly things. I think the 'monsters' on the island are probably some kind of cat, maybe a tiger?
