"American Idol 5: F11 3/21/06 East Coast Spoiler Thread"
Please keep all discussion of tonight's show in this thread until 11:00 PM EST.

So, tonight's theme is alleged to be 50's tunes. I haven't had the the time investigate accurate spoilers for song titles.

As always, don't hesitate to correct me if I have song titles and/or artists incorrect. Please also delete your sigpics for the benefit of our dial up friends, since these threads tend to drag on a bit.

I'm new in here but wanted to see what was being said about the judges this year. There are some really good performers, but the judges seem to have disintegrated this season

Is paula smoking something? Jeez, she just absolutely acts stoned or drunk or something. She is definitely not on, and I really thought Simon looked a little distracted by it tonight.

3. "Introduction of Contestants"
This is often the order of singers.

Mandisa, Bucky Covington, Paris Bennett, Chris Daugherty, Katherine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Lisa Tucker, Kevin Covais, Elliott Yamin, Kellie Picker, Ace Young.

Yee gawds, Ace is singing clean-up tonight. Yikes.

Tonight's theme is songs from the 50's, confirmed.

Looks like they're trying to save Consta...I mean Ace. He's singing last.

Ryan speaks of big uproar last week with Ace in the final three, as if it was friggin earth shattering.

Well, it was a bit unexpected, once they had paired Ace with Kevin. I was sure it would be Kevin in the bottom three. I guess votefortheworst is keeping him around.

Barry Manilow is the guest this week. He likes Mandisa's voice.

Is there anything this girl can't sing? She's almost too good for AI.

Judges' comments: Randy, wow, speechless, what a classy way to start the night, unbelieveable performance, she's set the mark. Paula, took her back to the 50's, performance was flawless, is a thoroughbred. Simon, she is blossoming, very sexy performance, a great stripper song, absolutely loved it.

Why has this woman not already been discovered? I am not sure she can win, but she strikes me as the Queen Latifa (sp?) type of performer. Could do broadway, record, even perhaps film. She has one of those larger-than-life stage presenses. (no, that was not a weigh comment )

Not liking this. He's changed the melody a bit.

Bad song choice. I don't know why the judges are pimping him. I thought it sucked. Thumbs down (if I had thumbs). Thank goodness for Simon's honest opinion.

Judges' comments: Randy, good song choice, liked mike technique, falsetto at the end was good, not the best vocal he's done, good choice. Paula, good song choice, good performance. Simon, reality check, nothing more than pointless kareoke performance, 'so what' performance, pointless.

Paris is lookin all 1920's flapper sassy!

Kind of a grownup-sounding voice tonight. I thought she was okay. Kind of a "matoor" song for her, though. She did quite well.

Now, if she can just maintain her dignity through the post-song interview...

hmmm...no major attitude. She's being all sweetie-pie. I wonder if she got a talkin-to.

Lvoe her when she sings! (not so much when she speaks,) Wow, perfect song choice for her voice. Chills runnin' up and down my spine!

Oooh, Constantine is in da' house!

Judges' comments: Randy, wow, wasn't sure how it would go, by the middle remembered how she was, blew it out the box. Paula, forgot she was 17 years old, dressed the part, vocals were impecible. Simon, this is what she does best, perfect voice for that kind of song.

Mrs. Archon thought it was like a really good highschool/college theatre performance of the song. That works for me. Just something a bit wrong about a 17year old saying a man gives her 'fever all through the night'...

Well nowadays you never know they
start younger and younger,maybe she
knows what she is singing about. Fantasia
had a baby as a teen so who knows.
I thought Simon or Paula would have scolded
her for this too.

1-866-IDOLS-04. Vote early, vote often.

IMO, again, but this is Chris's competition to lose. Unless the producers want another Carrie Underwood clone to win. Actually, Chris would probably be better off not winning.

Judges comments: Randy, how'd you feel, wow, doesn't know if it's the best vocals he's done but took a song everyone knows and put a different spin on it, knows who he is. Paula, waits every week to hear what he does, true to what he is, grows each week, should already be touring. Simon, agrees not the best vocal from him so far, but doesn't matter, first artist on the show who has refused to compromise, good job.

OK, I'm officially sick of Chris.

I'll vote for him again when he sings a song that isn't his same old rock song. Yes, he does it well. Very well. And some artists can make a career on doing the same thing over and over. But he's boring to me at this point.

It's funny, Simon has ripped artists in the past for staying in their comfort zone and only doing one song. But since Chris "refuses to compromise", it's great? Come on.

It's fine to like him, I like him. I'm just bored and sick of him at this point. I've heard this before. I heard it in the last four weeks.

My favorite Chris performance? When he had to sing "Emotion" during group performances.

Can't quite agree with you on this one.. This is his style of singing. I have a feeling he will bend and shape every song genre into his mold for the rest of the competition.

And he should. Its what he does well. I liked it -- thought it was a very unique arrangement. But then, maybe I am just partial to that style of music...

And it's smart for him to do as long as he has fans, it's just old for me.

And what really scares me? He DOES do other songs well. I LOVED his performance of Destiny Child's "Emotion" during Hollywood's Group performance. He made it his own yet he didn't over do it. It was awesome. I just wish he would. I like his Johnny Cash or his Fuel...just put something else in there sometime.

I don't mind him bending songs to get close, but if this was Ruben and his ballads, he's in his comfort zone, not being his own person.

Love, Love, LOVE HIM! You know what, I could care less if it is or isn't an original or a remix of this song because guess what...I never heard it!!! I just wish people would lay off him sticking to his roots, to me that's the smartest thing to do because it's your best vocals. Why go out of the box and do a song and sook at it? He won't be recording those kind of songs, he'll be recording exactly the kind of song he's been doing.

Does Katherine have the emotion to pull off this song? Smoky voice starts off fine. Little breathy. (This is one of my favorite songs to sing in the shower.)

Darn, she belts the socks off, but is it too Broadway?

Judges' comments: Randy, not his favorite vocal performance, but strong and took a difficult song and worked it out. Paula, tough to do an Ella Fitzgerald song ut will be one of the contenders throughout the competition. Simon, something happened tonight, he thinks she turned in to a star, because that was like watching a seasoned great performance, falls under the special category, loved it.

OK, can one person be more boring than her?

I'm already biased negatively towards her since I've thought she was overrated for a while, so this is jaded. However, every week, it's a solid vocal that turns in to nothing. She's a less talented, less enthusiastic, less fun version of Mandisa. If you want a statement that can't be quantified, she just doesn't have soul. Mandisa can bring the house down, Paris can get everyone on her feet, Katharine can connect with most red-blooded, alive, straight males and she's a strong singer, Lisa doesn't have a cliche.

She's either the type that goes too early, or goes WAY too late because people don't want to vote her off since they think they'll miss something. She reminds me a lot of a more polished Camille.

Bob Factoid: The fishercat is the only creature known to have gone completely insane chasing its own tail.

57. "RE: Kevin Covais"
This year scares me. It scares me because I can easily see a person like Elliot going before a singer like Kevin. Every singer still there has a fan base of sorts, and while I have no doubt the top 2 (whoever they prove to be) will stand at the end, I fear that we will get some screwy results when Kevin's fanbase keeps surprising and the Underwood contingent keeps Kellie in. So, how long until a big-time singer goes out while a Kellie/Kevin/Lisa/etc. are still there?

As for tonight, Kevin was decent. But I could have started a nap right after Katharine and not missed a lot (even Taylor wasn't perfect tonight).

Bob Factoid: The fishercat is the only creature known to have gone completely insane chasing its own tail.

After videotape review, you are right on the money! Kevin was actually listen-able for me. Wouldn't even consider buying one of his CDs, but I did not reach for the Mute button either...

I consider performers like Kevin, Elliot and Lisa "cannon fodder". Good enough to make to the dance, but there to truly accentuate the people who are the cream of the crop.

Its a great opportunity for them - and they should make the most of it - but I cannot see them making it into the top 6.

Maybe it is far different to listen to the singers in person, but I found Elliot Yamin's performance far from appealing. It seemed to me he sounded a lot of sour notes and his 'charisma' is negative. The judges are clearly hearing and seeing something really different from the broadcast sound and picture.

Funny you should say she 'sucks' when the thing most memorable about her performance tonight was her obsession with the pickle sign. It made her look dumb as a sweet potato. Maybe her sweet southern yam shtick is not an act. She may be a bit retarded. On the other hand, her singing was okay and she looked nice enough. I just don't get the way Simon reacts to her. He seems normally to be a person of some discernment. I have a feeling that if she was sitting next to him he would recognize the elements in her personality that seem to grate on him when Paula displays them.

I liked this performance of hers.

I think that Barry Manilow seemed to do a good job of getting the kids to connect to what the song is about. Too often there just seems to be a nice vocal performance but they don't get the emotion right.

Hopefully they will keep this sort of thing up.

Good observation. I've noticed this in previous seasons as well . . . when American Idol gets a guest judge/performer who genuinely enjoys interacting and working with the contestants, the audience is generally in for a pretty good week. And it usually turns out to be someone rather unexpected . . . I may be recalling incorrectly, but I seem to remember Neil Sedaka pulling off a similar feat during AI2.

While we should give all due credit to the contestants themselves, I think Barry did a fabulous job this week as well, especially with Mandisa and Katharine, who really got into the emotion of their songs - an element that I didn't think either excelled in previously. For the most part, I enjoyed everyone's performance this week more than last week, and I think that can be partially chalked up to working with a seasoned performer.

Is it confirmed that all she can do is country music and music in the realm of country songs (close but not quite)?

Can we just boot her before we get to the more specialzed weeks where she can't turn Stevie Wonder into country?

The song tonight was good, but boot the specialized singer. But the less annoying version of her won last year, so she may be around for a while.

And that's part of The Big Debate. He did great, so why knock it? I went to the official AI boards last night to get a handle on the arguments, and I ended up huddled in a corner of my livingroom, shuddering and shivering and chattering my teeth. Never.Go.Again.Frisky.

So, they were saying, in their eloquent way, that Chris was praised by the judges for his originality. BUT, the Other Side is saying that Simon simply said he refused to compromise. Credit was not taken, or given. I think the big deal is that Barry Manilow said "I've never heard it done that way before" in such a way that folks thought he was in awe of Chris, whereas Chris could have possibly told Barry and the band that this was Live's version, and Barry was more in awe of that version, no matter who arranged it. The band would have had to learn Live's arrangement of the song, so it's likely that Chris was honest with everyone on the set as to the origins of the arrangement, but those discussions didn't get aired, unfortunately. VoteForTheWorst, who I've enjoyed up until last night, was especially harsh abot it, but I still LOL at the comments over there. The AI boards, though...*shudder*

Ok, gotta throw in my 2 cents

Chris, Mandisa *fanning self* HOT HOT HOT

Bucky, I love you anyway and voted a ridiculous amount of times.

Lisa- way too nervous and not that impressive. I think she is in danger of another bottom three.

Kellie- an okay hooker version of a great Pasty song.

Paris- pretty decent.

Taylor- slight disappointment but I still love him.

Ace- improvement for sure.

Katharine- great

Elliot- such an incredible vocalist but for me he is quite dull. I want him to do well and make it far, though.

Kevin- should be sending a thank you letter to Vote For The Worst.
