"Floridian needs cold-weather help"
Woohoo! Having only seen snow twice in my life, one of which was in the mountains in Wyoming in the Summer, and amounted to a little flurry in the air, I am a little concerned and excited about my impending trip northwards this Holiday.
Being a Floridian, my Winter wardrobe amounts to my summer wardrobe, plus a jacket. I just got a nice coat from Burlington with a zip out liner that I think will help some, but I was hoping for some advice about other necessities from those of you who are used to the Freezer.
Any tricks you can share, anything you would advise I wear or purchase? Mind you, I can't afford much, especially when it will only really be useful on this trip, but I don't want to be miserable the entire time!

Fleece. T-shirts, gloves, scarves, headband (ears freeze quickly up North). It's cheap, lightweight, washes and dries in a snap. Old Navy, Gap. And please. If it snows while you're Up North, pulease! let someone from Up North drive. Then build you're first snowman and have a snowball fight. Enjoy.

You know, I am actually really nervous about the driving. I won't be driving, but my dad will, and he's not the best, if you know what I mean. Even my mom, who has a great record, is only from Georgia and has lived down here for the past 30 years.
So I am definitely worried about the driving. :/ We've had ice on the roads in Florida maybe once in my memory.

Get a stocking hat, a total ear saver in the cold. A pair of slippers if you don't have any is always nice.. floors without carpet get really cold.
If you are going to be driving, remember that just because some snow is flying doesn't mean the roads will be slick, especially main roads. Main roads are usually pretty good during the winter, the tires keeping anything on the road melted. Its really annoying following someone going 40 on a highway with nothing but a wet road.

Where are you going Amea? How far north?

Make sure you have at the very least good socks, gloves and a scarf. If your feet, hands and your neck are cold, you'll never get warm.

You don't have to spend a lot. I was in Target this morning and they a great variety of outerwear on sale. I got a nice pair of leather driving gloves for $12.00. They also had fleece gloves for less than $5. They are not waterproof, but will keep you warm. I'm sure your local Target (or Wal-Mart) will have winter wear. The 7 years I lived in Tampa my local Target always carried winter stuff.

If you are going to be traipsing in snow, you'll also want to consider waterproof boots. Again, a cheap pair will do the trick as long as you don't plan on hiking for miles in a foot of snow.

Remember, keep your feet, hands, and neck warm.

I didn't recommend a hat because I don't wear hats. I don't put anything on my head that will mess up my hair. I do wear ear muffs when the weather is brutal, and my snow jacket has a hood if it is snowing. Other than that, no hat for me.

If you're going to drive with gloves, make sure they have leather palms. Find boots with treads from an 18-wheeler. Along with the scraper for your windshield that Smooth mentioned, get some road salt or cat litter (yes, cat litter) for under your tires if you get stuck in the snow and make sure your windshield washer fluid is full as cars will kick up lots of scum if the pavement is wet. If it gets really cold where you're going, keep the gas tank full. As for actually driving in the stuff, there are probably websites with some expert advice. Check it out and have Dad memorize. All I can think of is slow down and if you start to skid, do NOT slam on the brakes, take your foot off the gas. I'll leave the rest to the experts. And after all this, it may not even snow. But you'll be warm after your trip to Target, WalMart or Old Navy. Oh, and put an old blanket in the trunk and keep the cell phone charged. If you do get stuck somewhere, both can save a life.

OK, I have to admit my neophite-ness when it comes to cold weather living.
Technically, I could say that I "see" snow every year -- the San Gabriel Mountains are prominant here in LA LA Land. Snow-capped every year.
My one experience with "real" snow -- in 2002 I was in NYC for a Special Education Teachers' Conferance (nice little junket, I must admit) and one morning, I looked out the window and LOW AND BEHOLD -- there were SNOW FLAKES falling from the sky!! Yep -- so I rushed outside -- all of seven -- count 'em --- seven miniscule flakes actually landed on my arm!
Go ahead, laugh. But then, come New Year's Day, I can actually walk outside my door in shorts and a t-shirt.

11. "RE: Floridian needs cold-weather help"
Being in Georgia for the past 6 years has really made me hate the cold weather up north. Unfortunately, I have to make the trek up there for the holidays this year. I have little kodiak boots which won't be any help at all if there's more than 6 inches of snow on the ground, which, with my luck, there will be. I also have the ugliest winter coat from when I was living in Montreal, but it's down filled and by gosh I will be warm in it, even if I'm ashamed to wear it LOL.

I would recommend buying some leotards to wear under your pants. They'll help keep your legs warm. I also found some fleece gloves at Target (*waves* to Augie) for under $5. I have a huge scarf that will cover my head if necessary. Like Augie, *waves*, I don't wear hats.

Good luck Amea. It's going to be brutal. Trust me.

Howdy Neighbor, Be careful on your trip up north.

Tell em, GA isn't always a slouch when it comes to cold weather either. We dont get the -xx degrees but it gets into the teens which is too cold for me. Of course, if there is snow or sleet, we shut down the state. Sorry, you travellers would have to come back another day when we're open

13. "RE: Floridian needs cold-weather help"
Hi neighbor! As a native Floridian who has made quite a few trips to the chilly north, one of the main things I learned was to layer. My first trip to NYC was in the winter, and I packed lots of warm sweaters and bought a heavy coat. Which worked when outside, but once we were in a restaurant or store where the heat was on, I was sweating, even when I was just wearing a sweater and jeans. My second trip (and trips after that), I brought more thin shirts to wear underneath, so I could unlayer (safely ) when I was inside. Not sure if that will apply to where you are going, but it's one of the things that helped me. For outside, I found I could not go without a warm hat, scarf, and my Docs. Learned from my first trip that although my knee-high stacked heel boots looked very fashionable, they weren't too practical for walking around the city.

Hope you have a wonderful time!

Mon

Peace on Earth.

I'll echo both what Nookie and Cherie said... layer layer layer! Wear long johns underneath your pants, and wear layers under your coat. The best thing you can do is if you can find a turtleneck shirt to go with the long johns, then put on a T-shirt and then a sweater under your coat if it's cold. If not too cold, then forget the T-shirt.

I grew up in Ontario where I often only wore one layer under my coat, then lived in Alberta where it can get to -30 or worse during the nights and I learned the magic of layering my clothes, and rarely ever felt cold. The places where you'd feel cold the most in a hurry is around the neck, so that's why I suggested the turtleneck and also a scarf is good to have.

As a 40+ year resident of the frozen tundra (well, except for a couple of balmy years in Chicago) I have a little experience in such matters Most of it has been mentioned.

1. Head cover- you will lose something like 40% of your body heat if you don't have a cover on your head.
2. Layer- a t-shirt, sweater, and coat will be warmer than a shirt and a heavy coat.
3. Put a blanket, candy bars, and candle in your trunk; the sand or litter too; and they make small folding shovels to go in the trunk too.
4. Make sure someone knows where you are going, and when to expect you.
5. DO NOT USE YOUR CRUISE CONTROL! This is the easiest way possible to go cartwheeling down the highway if there are just icy patches here or there. If you have antilock breaks, become familiar with how they react on the snow/ice.

Ironic isn't it? The warmest winters I spent were in Chicago. I don't know which is worse, the brutal SD winters, or the very bad Chicago winters- where very many people can't handle bad roads.

I like to think their from the South. I'd hate to think that you could drive in this stuff year after year and still not get it. On the other hand, due to population size and density, we have a disproportionate number of drivers here, so the likelihood for incompetence is greater than in other areas of the US.

Have your car serviced before you leave, explaining that you will be travelling north and wish to have it prepared for cold weather. You want your antifreeze/coolant checked, and a good quality oil that you know can be trusted even if you have to pay more for it. You will also want your windshield wiper fluid to be rated for freezing weather, there will be times when this will be a necessity on your trip; and if your windshield wipers are old you may want to replace them as well. While driving on snow/ice covered roads keep braking distance in mind and leave sufficient room between yourself and the car in front of you. Road crews will have layed out road salt or other substances to assist drivers in braking to a stop, it is important to remember that the greatest amount of these materials are laid at the approaches to intersections, you may need more braking distance should you have to stop or slow down somewhere other than at an intersection. Bridges have a tendancy to ice up before other sections of roadway, do not change lanes on bridges or after having passed through an intersection. Turn on your headlights during the day, this will help other drivers see you even if you do not need your headlights otherwise.

Yeah, what dabs said here. The worst danger is at stop signs or at intersections because even though they do dump a bunch of salt in that area, what can happen is that it'll melt the snow in the area and depending on how often traffic goes through there, the salt gets worn out or taken away, and the area freezes up again. Wheeee, a nice little skid can happen, so double your braking distance in that area and don't slam on the brakes - just tap tap tap.

Most of all... don't worry about the roads/cold so much and go have a good time! You don't want to spend the whole trip worrying if your folks will drive the car into a ditch or go into a cartwheel.

Relax. It's not really that bad if you're prepared for it. Has anyone asked about tires yet? I think that would be one of the most important factors. Bald tires and snow really don't mix. I'm not a fan of all-season radials but as long as they have lots of tread on them you should be fine.

The only other thing I have to say is if you do end up driving on snow or ice remember...no sudden movements. Make that your mantra.

As far as clothing goes, if you have layers you don't need a heavy winter coat. I live in Northern Ontario where the temp was -42 this morning and I came to work with the same leather coat that I'd wear in the fall. Boots are important. They don't have to be big and bulky to be warm though. A good pair of gloves/mitts and a scarf and you should be good to go. No hat advice from me either as I'm not a hat person. If you can pull off the hat look though you should go for it.

Good luck and stay warm.

Woot!
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I will be making my mom and dad read the advice on driving :}
I went out to do the shopping today, and couldn't find anything except socks! I found some hat/glove/scarf sets at JC Penny for 30 bucks. Blah. Me, wandering around the mall, looking for Old Navy, with the flu. :/
Oh well, I will have another chance in Georgia, I think.
Anyway, again, thanks for the advice! OT people are really helpful and I am sure it will all come in handy.
