LAST EDITED ON 05-26-04 AT 08:26 PM (EST)Yikes! No one started this thread yet! You all know the drill by now. Please post the play-by-play for tonight's 2-hour filler finale show (FOX, 8 PM ET/PT) in this thread -- and please keep ALL comments about THE WINNER in this thread until AFTER 1 AM ET, so the West Coasters can be just as surprised/horrified/whatever by the winner as the East Coasters are. Thanks -- AyaK ... out! Thanks to Shedevil for the reminder.

LAST EDITED ON 05-26-04 AT 08:31 PM (EST)LaToya sings first, the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass song "If You Don't Know Me By Now." She should've won. Kimberly Caldwell is in Atlanta, Georgia with the Diana homies (at the Georgia Dome). Clay Aiken is in NC with the Fantasia homies. Then George sings "Me & Mrs. Jones" (from the CD). Fantasia and Diana look weak compared to the losers.

Speaking of Leah Labelle. I watching the E news live show live from the red carpet?? They had this outdoor concert too and Leah Labelle was on stage singing. Simon and Randy went up to talk to Giuliani the host and they started yelling "who is that singing, tell them to shut up, they are awful".. It was Leah singing. Well now we can see why she is not going on tour.

Didn't think it was my place to start this thread, but now that it is here, I have two requests:Please try to stay on topic. This thread is bound to quickly become unwieldy, so it would be beneficial to all if we kept the off-topic chatter to a minimum. I'd also ask that you post WITHOUT sig pics, since they cause speed problems in huge threads. And so I don't violate my own rule: They open the show with LaToya singing, and immediately prove America has the wrong finalists.

Many of us connect through high-speed cable on state-of-the-art PCs or Macs -- but many others connect on low-speed lines or with older computers. So I'd very much like to endorse TJ's idea of leaving the sig pics out, so that everyone can connect to this thread without a problem.

LAST EDITED ON 05-26-04 AT 08:46 PM (EST)Just to summarize the posts above: Several celebs appeared, from Ray Romano and Sharon Osbourne (who both picked Tasia) to Jennifer Love Hewitt. Ryan interviewed the judges. Simon is still full of himself. Jasmine sang "Midnight Train to Georgia." That's probably the best way for her to sneak out of town before the music critics show up, but black leather looks good on her. Tamyra sings "The Star-Spangled Banner." Better than Roseanne and Ozzy!

You're right -- but I notice that moving from one line to three lines seems to have permitted just about three times as many calls to get through (since last year's final two vote was also four hours). Perhaps the jam on the local circuits is caused in part by all the redials when people can't get through?

We knew, or should have known. When Diana sang "I Believe" earlier it was a signal that she did not win. They always close the show with the winner singing the presumptive first single. I hope the angry fans who wanted Jennifer/LaToya/Diana to win don't overlook Fantasia's incredible talent....she's probably the most unique artist in Idol history, and although she's not always perfect, the girl can sing. Personally she's been my second favorite (favorite being George) throughout the whole competition, but I realize that Jennifer, LaToya, and Diana all have valid cases of why they should've won or lasted longer....however, in the years to come, I think things will shake out just fine for everyone. Although I'm not at all a fan of hers, Tamyra is doing fine for herself....so are Clay and Kim Locke, even Frenchie, and of course Ruben and Kelly. There's enough room in the music world for all of them, so don't get too upset over this competition...besides, what does it entitle them to anyways?....doesn't seem like Ruben was given any more attention than Clay was. What I love about this show came really clear to me, and I hope others feel the same way.I wasn't that invested this time, I think they are both really talented young ladies, but in the end, didn't matter to me who won. They both worked very hard to get there, and perhaps there were some who were just as talented who didn't get that far. But just before the winner was announced I found myself crying, and I realized that we get to witness this amazing life changing moment for one of these young women. And I think that is why so many love this show. At it's core, it is about dreams coming true. Okay, so maybe I am a bit sappy, but I think that is why people get so passionate about their favorites. Because to us it's a show, entertainment, but we see those young people and it is all about their dreams. Congratulations to Fantasia, and thanks to all the talented young dreamers that entertained us. Kelly's voice still makes me cry, she is great.

Buggy,I agree with you. I was crying too. The family curse is finally gone!!! When she couldnt sing parts of I Believe and she was on the ground that was just very poignant. I'm just glad BF was in the other room watching the Pistons game so he didnt make fun of me. I figured Fantasia won when Diana sang I Believe first. But what was up with Fantasia when she was late coming out on the stage to sing Dreams? From there on out she seemed so subdued, like she was just told her grandpa died or something. Only until after they announced her as winner was she "happy" and then it was more subdued than I had thought she would be. Has our young Fantasia learned some humility? I think so.

i heard on E that the loser lost by only one percent and thats like i think 600,000 votes. E also said that above 60 million people voted so they got that right i guess they got the percent righ too. Ryan also said it was really close during the show. But i think like last year teh vote wont matter and that Diana will be more sucsesful. Just because she is younger. and has younger fan who unfortunally had to go to bed at like 10 so she lost lots of vote there. I dont like that Fantasia won because of a technical prob. with her ear peice I really think the shows owes her a apology. Because maybe if there was not glitch she would have dont good and i think she would have won. I dont think either will be as sucessful as Kelly or Clay but they will deffinally surpass Ruben. And i think ratings were lower than expected becasue i have not heard about Rating yet

92. "My opinion on the whole thing." |
Haven't posted in a while. I was really bummed when LaToya was booted and didn't feel like talking about the show anymore. But--here I am again...At the beginning of the competition, I thought that the final four would end up being George, Jennifer, Latoya and Fantasia, not necessarily in that order. I really liked George's personality, and he was my early favorite (but I didn't really think he would win). I thought Fantasia was unique and very talented, but had a lousy attitude reminiscent of a bad checkout girl at WalMart. I thought Jennifer had a great voice but needed coaching. I thought LaToya was fabulous but a little aloof and a little too much like every other black female recording artist, ex. Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, etc.. Now we've reached the end, and I've only changed my opinion about one of those four contestants: Fantasia. I think she's shown a huge amount of personal growth during the competition. She wears her heart on her sleeve, tells it like it is, and sings like she wants to connect with her audience. Since it came down to her and Diana (not to her and Jen or LaToya, as it should have), I have to say that IMO there was no comparison btw. Fantasia and Diana. Fantasia was clearly a superior singer and performer. If Diana had won, it would have been a travesty. (Remember, these are my opinions.) Diana shouldn't have made it into the top 4, let alone the top two. She screams the high notes, flats the low notes, doesn't emote worth a d*** and reminds me of a contestant in a Miss Backwater County Pageant. To sum up...I'm glad Fantasia won, it obviously wasn't close (since no stats were provided during the show), and America chose wisely. She should've been competing against a different contestant for the final, but that's not her fault. And there's a good chance she would've won anyway. Opinionated

I would have prefer Diana to wins But I guess the only good thing that came out of Fantasia winning is that, there will be no whining or bitching about racism.

Congrats to Fantasia -- she will be a great American Idol! I voted for Diana throughout the competition (including last night), but knew that either would be deserving of the title (Unlike last year when I was pulling EXTREMELY hard for Clay!) I will not buy Fantasia's CD only because I personally don't like her vocal style. Hopefully Diana will get a recording contract also because she is immensely talented, and I do like her vocal style, and would buy her CD. I do think Fantasia will be successful and she really impressed me as being an extremely thankful and humble winner. I was also impressed with Diana's reaction to the results -- she is much more mature and poised than many "grown" women I know. Much success to both of these talented women in the future!!!!

One would think that after 3 seasons of live shows they would get it right for a change, but what an awful production.1. Guest hosts. Could we please take a little time to coach these people on how to work a microphone in a crowd? And, if we're going to haul some television or movie celebrity out of the woodwork to work the red-carpet or what-not (just because she happens to be a fan of the show), one would think we could find someone with even a little experience with live productions. Finally, at least give them some suggestions on what to say to the celebrities on the red carpet. (or how to say it) A couple of giggles and a lame question does not an impromptu interview make. 2. Sound and light show. Ok, glitches happen in any live show. None of them are perfect. But fire the camera people, please. My eyes are still burning from the disco episode when the cameras were pointed directly at the back-lighting for an entire hour. Do they not learn from past experiences? I understand that the performers might sometimes find themselves creating choreography in the middle of a live performance, but a skilled camera operator (and director) should be able to work around this without giving us so many bad angle, choppy, sloppy shots. Even Kelly who did nothing but sit on the piano for an entire song somehow managed to look awful from so many angles. 3. Ryan. During the so-called 'pre-show' in the dressing rooms, Ryan seemed perfectly comfortable speaking with Diana about how she might be the American Idol but did some strange peddling with Fantasia. I don't recall the exact words, but he sputtered a quick "or Diana" at the end of a thought that had each person in this household groan and say, "Ok, looks like he knows Fantasia won." Does the host of the show actually have to know the winner in advance? Can't he be surprised too? They have an entire season to prepare for a show like this. If he wants to be cute and funny, and all that, then at least give him some scripting to work with so that he doesn't fall on his face in front of millions of viewers. We recognize that Ryan has built more production influence in his three seasons with the show, but that bit at the end when he tried to get Fantasia's family on stage and the security/production crew stopped them ... that was just sad. 4. Song selection. This was mentioned in an earlier post but deserves repeating. Twenty minutes before they made the announcement, most viewers could have figured out the winner simply because Diana sang "I Believe". A company that earns this much money (with such a wildly successsful show) should know better. I'll save the critiques of the outfits and performances for the truly talented critics like Larry.
