Lost is a good show that shouldn't be missed. It has an entirely different tone than Amazing Race. Where Amazing Race is a fast paced frenetic race, where the road ahead is already paved for the racers (which is the show's strength as it keeps the action moving), Lost has a more thoughtful problem solving approach (which is this show's strength). I will be watching both shows to the end and I think that I shall enjoy both for the differences each has. I enjoy the non-stop excitement of Amazing Race but I don't like the fact that the contestants really don't have to think much. The hardest problem that the Amazing Race people had to solve was to figure out that international flights more than likely flew out of JFK. Lost on the other hand really puts it's contestants in a position where they have to think. They have to figure out where they are, they have to figure out how to communicate with the local populace (to a level more than shouting for directions out of a show-provided vehicle). Food and water aren't exactly givens either. Much more a problem solving mode for this show. If you like action, go for The Amazing Race... If you like a more thoughtful problem-solving style of game, go for Lost. If you like both, then watch both - I am! IceCat

4. "About Solving Problems....." |
LAST EDITED ON 09-07-01 AT 12:48 PM (EST) <If you like a more thoughtful problem-solving style of game, go for Lost.> I'm still puzzled how The Required Gay Guy in Every Reality Series managed to think that they were in the Czech Republic. Let's see: There's some Cyrillic writing on bits of trash they picked up, which is not used by the Czechs. They are in arid steppes, not countryside. They run into a very Asiatic appearing man with a padded jacket. They found hoof prints of either a horse or a yak. Anyone seen any yaks in Czech lately? They come across a little hamlet of yurts, which are circular houses covered with goat/horse hide used exclusively in Mongolia. There is goat cheese and crap all over. All the people there are Asiatic. Yeah, okay, one old man who didn't speak Chinese, much less English who was pickin' and grinin' for The White Folks nodded his head up and down when they asked "Czech? Czech?" What gave those morons the idea they were in the Czech Republic to ask him that in the first place? Here's a clue for the next bunch, if there are any after this piece of trash finishes airing: Crack a damned geography book when you think you might possibly might end up outside of West Hollywood. Then there is the required Eye Candy in the form of a JAP who makes Kimmi Kappenberg look like Einstein, squealing repeatedly, "I'm a beauty queen for gawd's sake, I'm a beauty queen!" Yeah, maybe baby...at the corner of Sunset and Western around 2:30 AM looking to give that last blow job of the evening before heading to an all night Denny's to while the night away with all the other hookers/starlets. Give me the Mom with four kids. At least she can carry out the trash. Which brings us to the devout Black Brother and his Total B!tch of a companion. He at least prayed after he robbed the grave. I was hoping that the Mongolian Hordes would descent on them all, behead them and and use their useless pumpkins for polo balls. Best Line does go to the hooker/starlet though: "There was a rock that got closer to me than most of my boy friend have." I don't even want to guess where that might have been without wearing gloves and a protective mask. Yeah, this is a Conan O'Brainless production fer shure. The show certainly doesn't merit a Two Dogs Up Rating but it should get something:

2. "I agree with the primate and the cat with good eye sight" |
.....I watched Amazing Race the other night and I thought it was okay, not great....basically a souped up version of this summer's Cannonball Run only minus the Jeff Varner factor. I found the editing to be confusing, the pace to frantic and after awhile we were basically watching the same things over and over again only with different couples doing them. And one thing I have to say, Bungey jumping may very well be an exhilating and exciting experience, but WATCHING someone bungey jump let alone 22 people Bungey jump just plain sucks and is nothing I haven't seen 874 times already on Road Rules.Another thing about AR that sucked is the dynamics within the couples.....on this show, the drama exists when we get to see people in already existing and serious relationships have breakdowns and have those relationships disintegrat on TV. Seriously, what is soooo interesting about watching friends, lovers and family members yell at each other while driving. That's NOT good tv, its just depressing and not at all interesting. On the other hand, let's look at LOST....this show puts people who do not know each other into intimate groups of two. I find it a lot more interesting to see if and how two strangers develop a bond or friendship than watching people that already have relationship rip each other apart. Its 110% (Boot Camp reference) more unpredictable and therefore better tv....for instance, we all KNOW that all of the couples on AR are going to be fighting the ENTIRE time, but we have no idea what will happen with the couples on LOST. Also, where AR went to some amazing places during the first show, I learned a lot more about the terrain, people and culture of Mongolia from LOST than I did about South Africa from AR....all I saw of South Africa on AR was whtever flew by in a blur though the windshields of a bunch of vans. It does not surprise me that AR is a Jerry Bruckenheimer (sp) production and LOST is a Conan O'Brien production....much like all of Bruckenheimers films (Gone in 60 Seconds, The Rock, ConAir, etc), AR scores high in style points and barely registers a blip on the substance radar, while on the other end of the spectrum, Conan's show actually has some thougth into it. In summary, it is quite clear that LOST is the smarter of the two shows, but it is equally clear that AR will win the ratings war b/c, as usual, most people fall for the fancy bells and whistles and fail to notice the smoke and mirrors.
Also, i must say that after watching both shows I am quite convinced that LOVE CRUISE is going to rule the school this year, hands down. Guess who?

5. "RE: Did anybody see "LOST"????" |
I haven't seen Lost. I was going to be out Wednesday night (it was unavoidable -- one of my fantasy football leagues was having it's draft that night at the Commish's house) and therefore could only tape one, so I picked CBS -- Amazing Race and BB.I never watched Fear Factor, and although Lost is 6 episodes long, I learned from a Zap2It article that the series will actually be two three-part "stories." In other worlds, the folks you saw in the premiere will reach NYC at the end of Ep3, and starting with Ep4, the show will begin following a second set of folks. ...knowing that, to me it was a no-brainer decision which to watch. I already wanted to see the BB/Survivor special, plus I figured I could always just give the Lost concept a shot in three weeks when the whole thing basically starts all over again (though I'm guessing NBC's fear of too many folks coming to the same conclusion as me is one of the reasons I haven't read much about Lost actually being two three episode runs.) -SB

<Love Cruise will be the "water cooler" show of the season--not the 2 race shows!> You bet! Watching a dozen self-centered Gen X'ers fight for face time on the camera on a fake "cruise" should be just what the doctor ordered to get the old water cooler bubbling. My somtach is already churning in anticipation. "Love Cruise" will make "Temptation Island" look like a PBS documentary in comparison.

LAST EDITED ON 09-08-01 AT 09:09 PM (EST)<Seeing people suffer, as in Lost or Survivor is better TV > You bet! I know that's the only reason that I watched "Fear Factor." I loved seeing the chicks puke while trying to eat buffalo balls! Well, I also enjoyed seeing The Poor Man's Tony Danza, Joe Rogan trying to keep a straight face while he palmed the bread for MC'ing the thing. Bring on the Survivors Tres! Give them less rice than Uno or Dos! More storms, pestilence, disease! And please, dear G-d, give us another Elisabeth. Sigh....
