Good idea, Ginger. Thought I'd post to give this new thread a bump.

Was it you who said that Austin's designs are haute couture and that's the avenue he should pursue?

If so, one question - what's the fine line between "haute" and "you've GOT to be kidding" couture? I think Austin's designs fit the latter definition.

ETA - I admit I don't spend much time with Vogue.

LOL at the idea that I would know thing one about "haute." I have all the fashion sense of a turnip. My entire fashion criteria is "what's clean?" which usually narrows the selection down to a single outfit.

I guess "haute" is like Oscar Awards dresses versus Grammy Awards dresses - formalwear? Exclusive? Obviously, I am just guessing.

I think Austin has a future; he seems very young to me (did anyone ever find out how old these people are?), and obviously knows where his heart/skills lie. I was very sorry for him though; it has to sting being bounced before Wendy Not Darling.

Have to admit, more than half the stuff I see actual runway models wear for actual designers makes me go "HUH?"

Haute Couture or Custom Clothing is in fact very different than ready-to-wear. What you see in Bryant Park is all ready to wear as it reflects mass production and is reflective of the American consumer and love of sportswear.

Only France per se can have Haute Couture showings... like Champagne they have that "sewn up" so to speak. It refers to the skills and speciality of the type of manufacture that the garments undergo.

Many of the shows in Paris are for the lines that only few women can geniunely afford and will not be shipped to stores for the consumer. Instead they are showcases for the line and the designer and a way to draw attention to and advertise the company. More Dior handbags are sold than the clothes that Galliano creates for his show.

Ironically Haute Couture is in a decline right now. The average Chanel suit costs approximately 30,000 dollars. With the Euro so strong it actually may well be more.

But not every Parisian house shows only its couture line, some show only what will be sold retail but they do have in house the designer and appropriate seamstresses who do that kind of work available for that select client.

In America we have custom work.. Issac Mizrahi is doing an "order only" line for Bergdorf. It is extraordinarily expensive and meanwhile we get his stuff at Target. Ironic.

So Austin is more theatrical and more in league with a Galliano and a Lacroix. But fashion is still a business and right now with houses up for sale in Paris, some without a principal designer the money seems to be in licenses and accessories vs the clothing.

Austin has talent and imagination but his work is theatrical it reminds me of Mizrahi in some ways as its all influenced by old movies and theatre and while Issac was beloved his first clothing line and ready to wear bridge line collapsed. So not even talent could help him. And many designers are also victims of great press, great talent and lousy business acumen.

I have never liked Wendy however, I do think her outfit was the best last week. I think she is going to get her ##### kicked in the show though. I also think that Kara is just as bad. She is full of herself and her clothing. Most designers are but her pants this week were aweful. I dont want her to win anymore than I do Wendy. Jay - now what the heck was he thinking listening to Kara - stick to your guns dood. I hope he wins.

I don't like Wendy but I don't think that I'm judging her outfit by my dislike for her. I really liked her wedding dress. This last totally awful outfit wasn't that different from the top that Nancy Odell wore to the briefing. I'm surprised Odell didn't recognize it. She basicalloy copied the top Odell was wearing and added a ridiculous bottom to it. I found nothing redeeming about that dress. It was badly proportioned, looked like a tutu with the shirt hanging out. Kara's was gorgeous and would have been perfect if she had simply shed the pants if she didn't like them. I also thought Jay's was good. Austin could have shortened his dress and made it work as well. But Wendys . . . I wouldn't be caught dead in it! JUST AWFUL!

<Haute Couture or Custom Clothing

Aha - so you're the one that buys and devours Vogue. You give a nice clarification of terms.

I still am not impressed by Austin, but the problem may be that I don't appreciate haute couture. Some of the Oscar and Grammy dresses are just plain silly, haute or no. So many outfits are contrived and struggling to be considered cutting edge that they lose any appeal for me.

Give me classic lines and grace any day over something designed to be "haute."

I hate Vogue magazine.. never read a fashion magazine, well other than In Style.. if that is fashion.

I grew up with clothing..my mother was a partner in a clothing store and she knew how to sew. It was back in the day when clothing was not quite as it is now.

As a result I am a fashion whore. I so miss Elsa Klench on CNN the ultimate in fashion commentary. So most of my knowledge is via the internet or TV.. but I still read the NY Times fashion column.

The nice thing today is that fashion has become more accessible and affordable.. the bad thing is J-Lo is a "designer".

Now this is one aspect of the show where I stand in awe of all the participants. I HATE to sew.

Anything I ever attempted looked like something home made, whereas others in my home-ec class created outfits that looked as if they came directly from Nordstroms or Saks.

RangeRover, you basically nailed what I was about to post in terms of ready to wear and Haute Couture. Except the Austin and the theatre clothing. I mean, he could go for it, and I think he would probably be good at it, but it seems like he wants to stick with a genre within the fashion design basis. I think he would be more Haute Couture, especially with his over designing techniques.

Well I have greatly enjoyed this show. I find many posts on other sites from people saying they are going to boycott Banana Republic and Access Hollywood because of Wendy making the finals.

Hey, Wendy and Austen are both ever so entertaining, but neither of them rings my bell with their designs. I would actually give Wendy the edge over Austen.

An amusing note, Austen has appeared in a lesbian goth porn, and also he is apparently actually 26 years old, not 23 as he has claimed.

My question: Who walks off? Wendy? Probably since the others appear to gang up on her, but then she isn't that sensitive to their barbs, so maybe it is someone else. Vanessa could be attacking Rob or Nora or who knows (but it is probably Pepper La Pew--a nickname I WISH I came up with, but it's stolen).

My guess is Starr. She always seemed just one step from a total breakdown and her designs looked like something an inept sewer might create for a Halloween costume.

Thanks for the picture of the dress. I, too, missed the first upteen dozen weeks of this and have madly TiVo'd the reruns and think I've caught up. I wanted to see how this dress turned out.

Question: what is the white thing she's holding? I always thought the top of the dress looked like a maillot, now I suspect that Nancy O'Dell is holding a beach towel to use for her swim after the Grammys!

The white thing is probably a cape she added. Just glad she got rid of those ugly feathers on the skirt.

That is a good question, it seems pretty similar to the original design sans plumas, but who knows. It looks good, though. Wendy does some hideous work, but every so often she pulls something good off. She totally deserved her Banana Republic win as well.

After watching the first two episodes in reruns last night, I have to say that Starr probably is the one to walk off, but I liked her "envy" dress. She put a tumor on the shoulder! Love it!

I liked that Mario fellow, too, but his dress was so simple. No wonder he got kicked off, I think I might have been able to put that together and I can't sew or anything. And Wendy's first dress was awful! She is lucky she didn't get booted the first episode, since she was the worst, much worse than Starr's Jiffy Pop or the other guys trash bag redux (though that one did lack imagination).

But what I REALLY LOVE is to see a post from TODDLJ, aka Larry Johnson, who used to be a real plum on this site with his fashion critiques of Survivor and American Idol. Larry, are you back??

I thought the same when I saw the post from TODDLJ!! Oh how I miss his fashion critiques on Survivor and other shows. It just isn't the same without him. Please, Larry, we love you!

Maybe you could step in, given your similar board name? ;)

Thanks for recognizing me! I've been loving Project Runway... but have just been too busy to do a column. I DO plan to be back on the boards this season for the American Idol final 12.

-Larry

eidted to add: Kara Saun is by far my favorite, though I have loved a few things Jay did... and I think Austin is a genius. Wendy is a great seamstress and will make a great addition to the bland, cookie-cutter Banana Republic staff.

It apperas Nancy O'Dell did quite a bit of tweeking. Although similar, one could hardly say it's Wendy's dress.

Watching the recap/reunion, I have to say it really looks like Jay wins, because Kara Saun is coming off petulant, and of course there is a big dogpile on Wendy.

Yes, designers, Wendy is a hag and a half, but the rest of you sound awfully sour grapes.

And is this reunion a little belated Valentine to Austen or what?

LAST EDITED ON 02-17-05 AT 02:14 PM (EST)

I found the reunion show to be produced in a strange fashion.

I would have expected the focus of the reunion show to be on the 3 finalists. Most of the discussion would be with them. Yet, other than Wendy, the focus seemed to be on everything but them. Kira Saun was virtually ignored, yet she won most of the competitions and is expected by many to be the overall winner.

I was also surprised by the seating arrangement. The 3 finalists should have been sitting together in the front row. Yet, Jay and Kira Saun were hidden in the back. Its almost as if the purposely kept the 3 finalists away from each other. I wonder if the feelings between Wendy and the other finalists were so strong that they purposdely decided to separate them

That is a good point. Now that the episode is over, I also found Vanessa's behavior to be odd. She got so upset and was all like "I don't want to be here."

She even seems to say that PR ruined her business, though she didn't come off badly at all, until last night anyway. If anyone would complain about being portrayed badly, it would be Wendy. I didn't get what was Vanessa's issue/problem/whatever.

I thought the reunion show rocked! How about how they trashed Vanessa! She really was being a b¡tch though. Jay really let her have it.

Wendy held up pretty well I thought, under the onslaught. I loved when Jay said, "Wendy! This isn't Survivor!" and Kara Saun, "Don't sell your soul, you may need it someday."

I think they play up Austin because everyone thought he should have been in the final three rather than Wendy.

The clips were hilarious! Jay cracked me up, as usual. I hope he gets his own talk show or something. I was dying when he kept calling Heidi Klum, Hodi Klum!

Random thoughts:

1. Wendy looked 10,000,000,000,000 times better with her hair in a single, brunette shade and the 50s schoolmarm glasses gone. It became too MUCH of a dogpile; I almost felt sorry for her. And I still agree with her comments re Kevin's leadership.

2. Kevin - weirdness. I still think he drew the infamous mustache. He squirmed and shifted his already shifty eyes a lot more than usual. I can't blame whoever did it for not confessing at that moment, in front of that group and the cameras, though.

3. Kara Sean did sound whiney. Not sure why.

4. Noticed Jay abandoned the trademark Morgenscarf and went with a quasi street (albeit wonderfully acid green) knitted cap and sweater combo. What can I say? I love Jay.

5. Liked Nora a lot better; she dealt with her DAWdom in a positive, fairly sensible manner. Plus her Heidi Klum imitation was pretty damn good.

6. The two boys they axed first are still negligible posers to me. Liked the "What a hot beootch" comment, though. And didn't Mr. Mentor look svelte in his casual leather jacket ensemble!

7. Rob looks mildly brain-damaged with straightened hair. I hope his feelings weren't too hurt when he heard Jay's Monkeyboy remark.

Technoir,

I also believe Wendy drew that mustache, on her own daughter's picture. It was my initial gut feeling. Although Jay jumped all over Vanessa, who said Wendy probably did it, I noticed Wendy was not the least bit outraged by Vanessa's suggestion. She sat there with that evil smirk on her face. I'm telling you, this woman is pure evil.

Ginger,

I believe now, and I believed instantly that Wendy drew that mustache on her daughter's picture. She even lied about how her daughter looked in the picture. Her daughter was not looking happily into the sky. In fact the photo appeared to have been taken at night, and her daughter was looking slightly to the side.

When they asked her where the picture was found. She had to stop drinking her water a second and think about it where she found the picture.

Also, when Vanesssa said, also that she felt Wendy may have done it, Wendy was not the least bit outraged by the suggestion, but sat there with an evil smirk on her face.

Remember, she said she would use her "motherhood" in anyway to get what she wanted. Also, remember when she was walking up and down the street (Austin, Kara, and Jay) were watching her. I believe she was practicing the outrageous accusation.

I was so happy when Vanessa said that. Jay was pissed, but I totally agreed with Vanessa. In fact,Vanessa had Wendy pegged from the very beginning.

I love Jay's personality and all, but I still prefer Kara Saun's designs (at least in the realm of their time contraints - some of his fashion week stuff looked really fun).

The "reunion" show as bizarre. I liked the little clips. I would have liked more thoughts from the ousted people about who they thought would/should win and why. I think they left that for the last 5 minutes of the show. Nora's impersonations were pretty good! Someone else did one that was really funny, but I don't remember who.

I would be totally fine with a Jay or Kara Saun win because I do like them both for different reasons. Jay is hilarious and some of the 'outtakes' with him were great.

Kara did come across a little whiney. Then again, I'm sure some stuff didn't make it past the cutting room, so Wendy was probably yapping about everyone going gaga over Kara Saun or something. Austin was pretty funny in some of those clips, too.

Overall, I thought it was a strange show in terms of format and what they actually talked about. The clips were mostly fun, though.

I soooo regret not seeing this show from the beginning. If the reunion show was any indication of the catty, egotistical, hypocritical, self-important, marginal talent personalities on display throughout the series, I need this season on DVD!

This is what reality TV should be! Loved it!

I'm rooting for Wendy. The hip, trendy freak show is so old. Dowdy, schowdy. I like her spunk.

Seems Kara Saun has one good line, the one about selling your soul. We get to hear it again in the Finale. She delivers it well, with such self-righteous disgust! It's a game show, sweetie. Indignation has no place here. Move along, please.

Austen is garish and obvious. A dime a dozen.

Now Jay? I'm down with some JDawg. But it's still Wendy's world.
