Nope, that's not a typo. The title is really "316." What does it mean? I've got my ideas: John 3:16 seems like a likely reference. Other than that, I got nothin'.The way back to the island is revealed to members of the Oceanic 6, but there's trouble ahead when not all of them wish to return. Guest starring: Fionnula Flanagan as Eloise Hawking, Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, Said Taghmaoui as Caesar, Zuleikha Robinson as Ilana, Mary Mara as Jill, Raymond J. Barry as Ray, Kavita Patil as Rupa Krishnavani, P. D. Mani as Nabil, Rebecca Hazlewood as Nalini, Patti Hastie as barfly, Glen Bailey as magician and Ned Van Zandt as Mr. Dorsey. Tribefied

LAST EDITED ON 02-18-09 AT 07:59 AM (EST)This epsiode was originally supposed to air next week before the break. They switched this with "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" which is next weeks. TPTB have said that they thought this was better shown first. Maybe more of a cliffhanger in next weeks episode? 316 there have been many references to. Remember Ecko's stick? *giggle* "Look north John 3:16". My guess it is another title that plays on BOTH the bible verse and a way back either through coordinates or a flight number. Another dual meaning title.

A quick thought from the episode:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ben said he had to keep a promise to a friend... and then shows up shaken and battered later on. Me thinks the promise was the one he made to Widmore... to kill his daughter. Obviously, Desmond would have had something to say about that, but I'm thinking we find out Penny doesn't fare well in the near future. Half man, half amazing, all DAW

I was thinking Ben had a very busy night getting Hurley out of jail, having Sayid arrested AND extradited while finding a way to convince Kate to come along. Not sure where killing Penny fits in that schedule!(Blackmailing Kate by kidnapping Aaron is the only thing I could think of that would convince her and cause her to order Jack never to ask about Aaron). That was the first episode in a long time that I didn't like. This was the episode that we were waiting for to get answers and they cheated us out of all of them. Everyone appeared on the plane and we were left with a leap of faith that it could happen. Poor writing if you want my opinion. Did I hear Ben tell Jack that his mother taught him how to read? The mother that died giving birth to him? Was it a writer's mistake? In this episode, it wouldn't surprise me but it could have been a joke from Ben.
Now, did any other Ajira passengers survive? If so, which of the Losties were survivors of the other expedition that had used Oceanic 815 to return to the island with Jack's dad as their proxy? It seems we're in a loop. I hope that isn't the final answer, that the series ends with another crash.

What I meant was he's an escapee from a psychiatric hospital where he was placed by the law. Maybe his dad bought all those seats, Hurley himself shouldn't have access to those funds.

I think we are supposed to see parallels here to the pilot episode. Another type of loop. A bunch of people get on a plane, yet they still have secrets. How did Hurley know. Why is Sayid getting extradited to Guam? It's US right? Where is Aaron? Grandma? Did Kate get a visit from Claire again? Sun. What did she say to her family? Ben. Did he visit Penny and Desmond? Is Widmore in on this all? I think it sets up the rest of the series for answering those questions. It's only the early middle of the season and they are back! Plus? We did get answers. We learned about the island and how it moves through time and space. We learned Dharma has an off island station! We learned Jack has a grandfather(great casting). As for the Ben remark. That was clearly a typical Ben being flippant remark meant for comedy. I thought it was a great, great episode! You've been hotpocketed!

"To me, them back on the island is far ahead of when I expected"Which is precisely why I didn't like the episode. The season was suppose to build-up to Ben, Jack and Locke's efforts to get all of them back and that build-uo has been growing since the end of Season 3!! Now, they are back and we have no way of knowing how it happened. It just did. I don't like buying without seeing what I'm buying and it seems that the writers have sold me some bad tasting Kool-Aid I'm supposed to swallow. It is season 5, only 1 to go, and there are plenty of mysteries on the island to solve. The mysteries in LA should have been resolved.

What mysteries in LA? How they get back to the island, and why they each get on the plane, is nowhere near as important as what happens once they get back. That's the sort of info that can be shown through flashback once characters are on the island.

Last night's episode was very good...and as always confusing..but as I was reading your post something did pop into my mind....Ms. Hawkins told jack they had to recreate the original plane using the six or as many as possible...Now, I have no idea how hurley got there.....maybe charlie told him...nor why kate changed her mind...again,maybe claire told her....sayid on the other hand new...and just like john being a proxy for christian....I think sayid is in the position that kate was in with the federal marshall, and with handcuffs....the destination is really not important....it is the route the plane will take that is important....

How did that letter get out of the coffin? 4. Why was Kate all zombie like? 5. Thomas the apostle. Are all the Toms we have had been apostles? Followers? 6. What if the Oceanic 815 crash was a recreation of another crash to try and get back to the island? Following? Christian had to die, he needed other people to fill in the roles that he was originally there. Maybe it wasn't a plane crash but an boat crash or something, was he in the army? 7. If they are all in the past now before Ben purges DI does he know that they are there? Does he need a list of names everytime something crashes to see if it is anyone returning? Is that where some people have disappeared? Kind of like how Jack, Kate and Hurley disappeared from the Ajira crash?

Others have hit most of my observations, but here goes:1. My DW pointed out the C.S. Lewis reference to the Dharma station. I was really interested in seeing more of that map on the floor. 2. The crash of the plane was accompanied by a flash and the sound of the smoke monster. 3. Aaron's absence was a little strange. Why was he let off the hook of going back? Will it make a difference? 4. Where were Ben, Sayid, and Frank after the crash? 5. Was it actually a crash? 6. The guy sitting in first class with the O5+Ben looked familiar? Have we seen him before? Is he important? 7. Ditto the gal accompanying Sayid. 8. Jin in the Dharma outfit was pretty cool. 9. Hurley brought a guitar along in memory of Charlie. I like zombs' speculation about the car crashes. From our past discussions, I've always wondered if there was a significance to them. You've been hotpocketed!

I can't believe that you guys think we didn't get answers. It was a GREAT episode.Hurley didn't bring the guitar in honour of Charlie....he brought it because Charlie told him to bring it. That was the clue for the audience...so that we would know it was Charlie who told Hurley what to do. Loved how he bought all the standby seats! The look of surprise on Sayid's face and his arrest indicate that he was set-up. That is definitely Ben. Ben was calling from a marina. He absolutely was there to kill Penny. Whether he succeeded or not is the only mystery. Jack's grandfather wants to go to a better place. Hmmm...can you say "The Island"? How much do you bet he was stationed at that island with the American Military. I'm not sure why Kate was in zombie-mode. I think that she left Aaron with Clementine and Cassidy (Sawyer's baby-momma). Ben is reading "Ulysses"...not even sure where to begin there. bouncey by Ice

Ben is reading "Ulysses"...not even sure where to begin there. from Bibliomania(for those of us, like myself, who needed a refresher): 'Ulysses is usually deemed to be Joyce’s greatest achievement, and it is the zenith of modernist writing in the novel form but is barely recognizable as a novel or as any other kind of writing. It brings together anecdotes, journalistic writing, drama, questionnaire, bawdy episodes, stream of consciousness writing, arachaisms, neologisms and - surprisingly - more. It was serialized first in the Little Review in 1918 and published first in Paris in 1922, although its censorship for obscenity in America and England were not lifted until the mid-1930s. In terms of its story it defies abridgement or explanation except that it all takes place on one day, 16 June 1904, or ‘Bloomsday’, which was the anniversary of Joyce’s first walk with his beloved Nora Barnacle. It (very) loosely follows the episodes of Ulysses from the Odyssey of Homer though in a reordered form, with Stephen Dedalus representing Telemachus, Leopold Bloom Ulysses and Molly Bloom Penelope. The central characters explore various sites and happenings around Dublin such as a newspaper office, a brothel, a funeral, and public houses. It is an immense achievement of innovation or a confusing mess depending on one’s opinion, but regardless it is an extraordinary reading experience.' Interesting sidenotes: There is also a Ulysses, Kansas in the extreme Southwest of the state, and a NASA satellite mission name Ulysses, which is studying the sun and solar wind output. >Ben was calling from a marina. > He absolutely was there >to kill Penny. Whether >he succeeded or not is >the only mystery. Exactly...Ben was at a marina, austensibly to keep a promise he made to an old friend. So, it's obvious that he was there to kill Penny. Which means...he wasn't out trying to kill Penny... Or can anyone point to something that was so obviously hinted at in the history of this show that turned out to be exactly what was expected. I don't think the marina had anything to do with Des/Penny. Trying to infuse some storyline logic...Des/Penny are on a boat in England. They need to get to L.A., so they sail across the Atlantic, thru the Gulf of Mexico, and through the Panama canal...This would cost them somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 in canal tolls...plus the extra cost of sailing that far. Wouldn't it make much more sense for them to sail to New York or Miami...and then fly to L.A.?

1. I'm wondering about Aaron. The only think I can think of that would change Kate's mind so drastically might be Claire appearing to her, telling her she had to go back, but not with Aaron? Or had to give Aaron to the grandmother?2. Locke seems to be a Jesus-like character. Having to sacrifice himself for the good of the island, and the other people. Next week, it seems we see how all that went down. And because he's taking on this Christ-esque role, I fully anticipate him coming back from the dead. This also fits all the John 3:16 references. 3. Crash or no crash? The Pilot saying that they weren't going to Guam leads me to believe crash. But everybody being randomly strewn about or missing, makes me think perhaps no crash? 4. They seemed to have landed on the island 'back in time'. The van looked new, and Jin was in a fresh Dharma suit. So now that they're back on the island, apparently at the same 'time' as the other losties still left on the island. Will they all now jump around together? Or do we know definitively the jumping has stopped? 5. Daniel Farraday totally built the Lampost Station. 6. Jack's Grandad's stories about why he had Christian's shoes was totally a cover-up for something. I'm not sure what, though. 7. I think we will get the backstories on how Hurley and Sayid ended up on the plane in upcoming episodes. I think we'll also see eventually what happened to get Kate to change her mind.

I've watched every episode so yes, I am familiar with the show. It doesn't mean I have to buy everything.Ever since the episode #3 finale when Jack told Kate: "We have to go back" we knew 2 things: Some Losties would get off the island and they would eventually return. We had a satisfactory, even thrilling, explanation of how they got off the island but the explanation as to how they returned was completely butchered. The scene of Kate in Jack's bed had horrible acting and didn't tell us anything. Eloise Hawking is a terrible disappointment as far as acting and how much she told us about the story. The whole episode was presented as if seen through Jack's eyes when his was the least interesting perspective since we already knew he wanted to go back. Now that we're back on the island I'd like to concentrate on the ISLAND's mystery, not have to go back to LA but we'll have to suffer through many flashbacks because the LA story was left incomplete.

59. "RE: Ep. 5.6: 316" |
I thought it was a good, not great episode. I’ll be interested to see if the people who didn’t like this episode change their minds after seeing the next one. C&L may have goofed by airing this episode first. Personally I would have preferred to see the Jeremy Bentham episode first. It might help explain the Oceanic 6’s behavior for the last few episodes and how they ended up on the plane, but even if it doesn't, we'll find out eventually. Also we now have to wait a while to find out Jin’s reaction to Sun coming back to the island and where the other Ajira passengers are. Now that's a question I want an answer to asap!My thoughts: -Why did Jack wear a suit back to the island? He knows the climate and terrain and that seemed like a poor choice so there must be a reason. -Why was Kate so morose? I like trigirl’s idea that Aaron was with Cassidy and Clementine, but I don’t think that’s where he is. I think someone (Ben) did something regarding Aaron that really upset Kate. -What a coincidence that Christian and Locke have the same sized feet! -I loved the VW bus that keeps showing up and that it was Jin driving it this time. Now we have placed them in the “when” for the time being. -I think Caesar and the Marshall survive. I don’t read spoilers but the EW article mentioned there are new cast members for season 5. If they land on the island, then Frank probably does too. - My last big question – will the rest of them have to go back to the island too? Desmond (remember Eloise said the island wasn’t done with him even if he thinks he’s done with the island), Aaron, Walt, Michael (maybe as an apparition)…I think they all have to somehow return to the island too before Lost's mysteries are solved.

I think he was wearing his suit through most of the crash "beach chaos," but was down to a t-shirt later, after Kate sewed him up.
