I've always been willing to give this show the benefit of the doubt b/c I liked it so much and I had confidence that characters would be developed and stories flushed out eventually. But, ever since I read that this will be the last season I have looked at this show differently, and I'm not that impressed.Nothing really happens and I've found that I have no patience anymore for innocuous scenes like the love affair between Calamity Jane and whatshername b/c I know going in that these side stories will go nowhere since the whole thing is over in two weeks anyway. I actually fastforwarded through a scene or two this week which is something I have never done before with this show. In light of the fact that this show is over I think this season has been terrible. So many pointless storylines that will not be resolved before the end that it becomes frustrating to even watch. And btw, am I the only person who has been predicting that the fat black woman cook will kill Hurst before the season is over. I think that's been obvious since about the 3rd episode. Ginger, what is this movie concept you talk about? Does that mean that the finale is going to be a couple hours long or is there acutally going to be a movie released later on to clean up all the loose ends?

LAST EDITED ON 08-15-06 AT 01:11 PM (EST) ******WARNING************* HISTORICAL SPOILER AHEAD, COCKSUCKERS!
Given that George Hearst was a real live person who goes on to become a late-life senator and found San Francisco's own defunct Examiner newspaper (not to mention spawning William Randolph, Patty's grandpa and the inspiration for Citizen Kane), I think he's safe for the season. Unless Milch REALLY takes artistic license. http://www.hearstcastle.com/history/george_hearst.asp I've heard about the movie concept here at work (we represent certain production entities) and in interviews with Milch and Ian McShane. The notion is going back and forth - they may do a four hour finale block, two hours on two consecutive nights, or they may just do a three hour finale that attempts to tie up some lose ends. On the other hand, one wonders, as time goes by and the actors become involved in other projects, if they will make good on any of these promises. It's a shabby way to treat a great show but it won't be the first time. I guess we should just be happy with the three seasons we got. And for those of you going through withdrawal pangs, may I recommend you watch/rewatch "McCabe & Mrs. Miller"? It was the inspiration for the feel and mood of Deadwood, with the town building around the characters little by little. Without McCabe, we would never have had Deadwood.

And to make me look even smarter, I've even been to the castle. That said, I don't think that means he is safe for sure. After all, they've already invented alternative realities for Bullock and the Earp brothers, so why not Hearst as well?

LAST EDITED ON 08-30-06 AT 05:05 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON 08-30-06 AT 05:03 PM (EST) That was the penultimate, Dahlin. Finale's comin.
And it's bringing HELL with it! ETA: Link to article from Salon re finale (THIS Sunday, Sept. 3)-CONTAINS SPOILERS--Also seems to think the final four hour thingee is actually going to happen... "As the third season of "Deadwood" comes to a gory finish, with just four more hours for Milch to tell the rest of the story, all we can do is feel grateful for the time we've been fortunate enough to spend in the company of such rich, fully realized characters. From the odd quirks of its language to the vivid scrappiness of its setting to the undeniable soul at its core, there will never be another place quite like Deadwood." http://www.salon.com/ent/tv/review/2006/08/28/deadwood_finale/index.html

I started watching Season 1 on dvd and am enjoying it. Didn't realize the series was over until I read this thread. And now I find out it doesn't even tie up with an ending. *sigh
