LAST EDITED ON 08-01-05 AT 04:45 AM (EST)For those who've kindly asked how my garden grows here in Hawaii (waves at MandyM)--like a weed, full of weeds, yet I love it. I miss many plants I used to grow, and am learning the new ones, and there are some old familiar friends that can handle the heat. My old garden (see 2002) was a work in progress for 5 years. This entry is a of an overgrown piece of land that I tried to reshape so that it had some form, planted lots of stuff, kept some after a lot of pruning. I had it for around 9 months. Really. These photos were taken last October. I had to sell it, and my current garden is only three months in the taming, so nothing to show yet. But next year! 1. path passes hapu tree fern circle to lower back yard and gazebo 
2. Mandarin oranges abound 
3. The lava rock koi pond my son built beside the gazebo
4. Old Gazebo falling apart? Tie it up with a big binding vine. 
5. Bananas ripening by the pond 
6. Koi pond from the other angle. Can't get enough of my koi.  
7. Looking from gazebo at flowers below the hapu circle.
8. Back up the path to the mid-level and back lawn. 
9. Looking up from path to downstairs of house. 
10. Path bends around, looking out over the stream wilderness, steps down to lower path along torch ginger jungle and avo trees.

mysticwolf, your place sounds amazing. Gardens your grandmother put in? I would love that. I was a tenant for many many years with only potted plants. Yeah, 3 acres is a lot to care for. The place above was 1.8, but only the top tier of it was cultivated at all. It dropped down sharply to a stream with a small waterfall. Wonderful noise from the waterfall when the rains were heavy, but way too many mosquitoes to hang out there.Thanks for saying I have talent. I dunno about that, I miss and hit! I don't think you and cahaya were posting during 2002 SC, but here is the garden that I really built from scratch, the one in California. You might enjoy seeing it. cahaya, yes, tropical gardening has its perks. It also has drawbacks like 9 inch centipedes in the dirt along with cockroaches and fire ants, one inch of topsoil soil underlaid with solid lava, and no down time when I don't have to mow, weed, or fertilize! In the summer months, it's Hot, Humid, Horrid. So if these pix look pretty, just remember it was damned hard work keeping that up! I must be crazy to do this for pleaure--more like compulsion really.

Oooh! So you're on the leeward side of the Big Island then, right?It's so beautifully lush and green there. I certainly wouldn't object to going back ^__^. Your flowers are BEAUTIFUL. Have you ever been able to grow proteas? Those things are fantastic. Of course, I'm also very much partial to white anthuriums.

JSlice, thanks! and to answer your questions, yes, I live on the wet green side now (the east or windward side), if that's what you mean ... there is another lush green belt south of and mauka to Kailua Kona--the coffee towns, which is the leeward side. I started out over in the dry Kohala desert, Waikoloa, and then just above Kawaihae harbor (leeward). The sunsets and ocean views are gorgeous but it's HOT WINDY DRY (yet humid). No good for gardening unless you have the resources of the big hotels. So I moved over to Hilo side where life is more real, more affordable (for Hawaii) and not geared towards vacations. I like it a lot, rain and all. Proteas are the most fantastic flowers, I agree. I have not grown them as they are very fussy, grow best on slopes and higher elevation, and aren't very attractive when not in bloom. They seem suited to commercial growers. I do have a lot of orchids and anthuriums, getting more orchids all the time as they are cheap at the Farmer's Market and when they are finished blooming I throw them out under a tree and forget them until they bloom again.
