"2014 Fall Classic"
Sure, I'm well known as a loyal Dodger fan, and should be totally disgusted that that team from NoCal has advanced, (well, in many ways I am) but I think we're in for a treat this year. Both teams have bested "better" teams (superior records, higher payrolls, etc). Both have come from behind late in games to snatch victory from their stunned opponents. They have strong benches and bullpens - key factors in October baseball.

This is the second time both Wild Card teams have advanced to the World Series (2002 - Anaheim Angels vs the aforementioned NoCal team -- Angels took it all).

The Royals have not been to the World Series since 1985 -- before most of their players were born. The other team is in their third Fall Classic in five years. However, the Royals are the first team to start the post-season 8-0.

It's always dangerous to make predictions at this point - so I won't. I'll just sit back and enjoy the battle.

I look danger right in face and say "I'm looking you right in the face, Danger!", so I'll pick Kansas in 6.

It's going to be a fun series with several interesting storylines. I wouldn't mind seeing KC win, but think it'll be the Giants winning it all.

1) We saw what happened when an upstart team went on a hot streak and then sat around for a week before finally getting to play again: Colorado in 2007. They had that incredible streak to make the playoffs then steamrolled through with sweeps before having to sit for a long time before the Red Sox outlasted the Yankees. The Rockies were swept by the Red Sox, having lost their momentum from not playing for a week.

KC will be in a similar situation - sweeping through the first rounds and then sitting for six days before getting to play again. Very easy to completely lose their momentum there; sure, the Giants will be sitting for almost as long (5 days) but they're experienced at the Series thing.

2) Tough to bet against Madison Bumgarner, who's building quite a spectacular post-season resume and is coming off a NLCS MVP award. He's 4-0 with a 0.55 ERA on the road in the playoffs, with a current streak of 26.2 shutout innings going. He's made two World Series starts in his career - both were shutouts.

3) Experience factor - the Giants have many of the same guys who have been there in both 2010 and 2012.

LAST EDITED ON 10-27-14 AT 01:02 AM (EST)

Another vintage performance from Bumgarner - now 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA in his World Series career with 12 hits given up over 31 innings. An absolutely clutch pitcher who will happily take WS rings while certain others will settle for Cy Youngs (sorry, couldn't resist). If there's a Game 7, I'd bet on seeing Bumgarner out there, whether it's starting or out of the BP.

Revealing stat, this post-season:
Bumgarner - 6 starts, 47.2 innings, 4 wins and 3 shutouts.
Rest of starters - 9 starts, 45.1 IP, 1 win.

Mathewson, Ford, Gibson, Koufax ... and Bumgarner.

On another note... what a tragic loss in St. Louis with the passing of Cardinals super-prospect Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, in a car accident earlier today (rainy weather with no street lights in the area of the Dominican Republic that he was in). Everything I've read about Taveras was that he was a real stand-up guy that was well-liked by everyone.

Hard to believe that one franchise could lose three players in twelve years the way the Cardinals have - Darryl Kile, Josh Hancock and now Oscar Taveras.

I'd like add one more name to the Fall Classic pitcher HOF list -- not a long career but quite noteworthy.

3-0
31 IP
0.87 ERA
0.94 WHIP
.181 OBA

Held the consecutive WS shut-out innings record for better than 40 years --

A crafty young southpaw out of the Boston Red Sox named George Herman Ruth
I heard he went on to other things with another team...

I concur with the shock and condolences to Oscar Taveras's family and friends, along with all those wonderful fans in Cardinal Nation. Peace to you.

Yep, the Babe had a pretty nice career just as a pitcher.

At today's funeral for Taveras:
