topic of the day - Nailshere's my dilemma. i have bad nails. they are weak and yuck. i have tried artificals a few times over the years and i refuse to ever get them again. i tried the OPI strengthener and it was ok. I tried Nailtiques #2 and it was great. my nails have been growing like gangbusters, but it left my cuticles in really ragged shape and i can't seem to get them "fixed." what can i do to get glamorous nails? help me please!

My nails are crap too sorgee. I've tried NailTek stuff that I also love - but again, my cuticles take a beating. Plus I had acrylics at the end of January and my nails are still recovering from that. I may just give up and get them again - they look so good but are so expensive to keep up.I found that moisturizing at night with vaseline and then wearing gloves to keep the moisture in - helped my cuticles a little. I've also found that wearing a band-aid on each finger works too Would love to hear from the product queen!

Can't have a beauty talk without putting my two cents in! I am a fan of OPI products -- but I see Sorgee didn't like the nail strengthener, so I don't know if she will like the cuticle cream either. There are two that I have used and liked: OPI Avoplex Oil and OPI Avoplex Exfoliating Creme (when the cuticles are really hard and rough). Another thing I suggest is treating yourself to weekly or bi-weekly manicures. Maybe you can't do it all the time, but do it a couple of times until your cuticles get in shape and then maintain on your own. Good luck! compliments of GeorgiaBelle Beauty Product Queen of the Boards and a fancy girl to boot!

I'm with Kiki on the salon issue. One of my earliest career goals was to somehow make enough money so that my DW could get her nails done professionally. I am proud to say that Mrs. DS has been getting her nails done about every 2 weeks for years and I never hear of any problems (except there was the terrible Play Doe incident in '91'). Find a good salon that massages your hands each time you go. Pamper Yourself - you deserve it and you will feel better.Real beauty is NOT skin deep - It has to start on the inside!

"Real beauty is NOT skin deep - It has to start on the inside!"Bullshit, it starts with the plastic surgeon's scalpel and few hits of Botox. Once I got my nails done and they looked fab for about 40 seconds until I had to pick sunflower seeds out of the vcr. I was crushed that my nails got ruined and my DH in a rare moment of clarity said "I don't know any man that looks at a woman and says "damn she got a nice set of nails..."

It may not be time for me to disagree with anyone yet but....> "Bullshit, it starts with the plastic surgeon's scalpel and few hits of Botox." Not always the case. Sometime no amount of plastic surgery can give someone beauty - May I use a current survivor castaway as an example? > "my DH in a rare moment of clarity said "I don't know any man that looks at a woman and says "damn she got a nice set of nails..." Your DH is a wise & lucky man(trying to redeem myself after having the gaul to disagree with anyone after only 6 DAW's)

I"m with Kiki and DataShark on the salon issue. I have horrible weak nails, and polish would never last. But I started getting "gel" manicures where the manicurist applies an acrylic gel and glue (looks like superglue in a little tube). I swear, I couldn't break a nail if I tried. And the polish simply will not chip, since it's got a more uniform, harder surface to adhere to. I usually go once a week, but have stretched it to 2. Give it a try, Sorgee, you'll like it! It's nice to be pampered for half an hour a week, and it doesn't cost a fortune. My manicurist even gives a chair massage while my nails dry. It's the best!

Hi there...My nails also tend to suck, but I have been using Vaseline Intensive Care Healthy Hand Essentials (It claims to help strengthen nails) and my nails look better than ever. I also use Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. Sometimes it helps me to go to the salon to get a manicure (your nails don't need to be long at all). For some reason my nails are stronger after a manicure. Good luck on your quest for strong nails. Lauren

welcome welcome welcome to OT bostonsrule & datashark - we love new peeps.I got nothin for you when it comes to nails though, Mine always look horrible. One of my BFs in college was a manicurist on the side - I had great nails then when she would practice on me, but they are awful looking now. has short, stubby fingersand uneven nails. Thank God for moving boobies.

my nails are weak and paper thin...I had a nail tech friend tell me once that they were "eggshell" nails...I've given up on pretty nails. I just keep them filed neatly and break out the emery every time one rips off, cracks or breaks. (at least once a week) On the plus side, I have heard that pregnancy can change your body chemistry enough to give you thicker nails. Not sure if that's a myth or not...but I'm not willing to make that trade off yet. would figure that I'd be likely to have pretty nails when I'd have the least amount of time to take care of them

prenatal vitamins are suposed to help your hair and nails. The only thing they did for me though was prove I had a pronounced gag reflex - those things are like horse pills.

My fingernails have eggshell too. Nothing we can do about this kind of disease and trim nails shorter.I just began to learn about manicure (third class so far) and I practice to do manicure on other student last Monday. The cubicle should push inside or trim by cubicle trimmer. I learn that white spots in nail has nothing to do with milk (calcium). It has to do with poor diet. Olive oil massage on nails and hand lotion massage on hands and arms are good for blood circulation. (sp?)

Do you go to one of the scary places or an actual salon? Here the scary places (run by people who don't speak English and use the scary chemicals) a full set is like $35 and $15 for a fill. In a salon it is $55 for a full set and $20 per fill. I just don't have that kind of money to throw away and I'm scared to go to the cheaper places. I've watched and read to many stories about wierd fungi and diseases and infections. But I really do miss the acrylics that I had on for three weeks. They looked so purdy.

Add me to the list of peeps that have thin nails. I fought my entire life to get them to grow, but it never worked. My Mom had bad nails until she hit her mid-thirties, then they got stronger and grew better. Well, here I am in the same age bracket and sure enough, my nails are improving. They still get to a certain point and break on me, but at least they aren't as bad as they used to be. I've heard that using a file on your nails a few times a week keeps them stronger. Don't know if it helps, but I do and it hasn't hurt. For some reason, I can't get into having my nails done. I've had fakes put on a few times, but they ruined my nails for a long time afterward. Plus, I just HATE to waste the time to have them done. I'm kind of weird that way. I hate to take time for hair cuts and I want some highlights, but with my hair I'd be there all day!

I have a really good cuticle oil, I can't think of the brand but any type of moisture you can use on your cuticles should help. Also, try to make a habit of pushing back your cuticles while you are in the shower or washing your hands, they'll be much softer. I also put lotion on my hands after washing them, and concentrate some of the lotion into my cuticles and nails. Mon

Absolutely. And you can use olive oil, mineral oil, almond oil, or something similar. G E N T L Y push back the cuticles each and every time you bathe/shower, followed by oil. Repeat for like three weeks. I personally would start with a decent manicure in a real place (not one of those scary places ... I personally worry about HIV so I'm reasonably careful who gets the opportunity to draw blood). Then if you take care of the cuticles daily they won't get wretched. Watch the acrylic nail thing ... fungus and even more wrecked nails isn't attractive either. Who usually does her fingernails herself but is willing to pay for a pedicure and foot massage. Makes for a happy life.

Totally agree about the acrylic nails. I had them for about a year a while back, and when I had them taken off it took a couple of months for my nails to grow back healthy. It really worries me how they grind your cuticle area down when you have acrylics. That can't ever be good. Mon
