"Your Thanksgiving Menu"
I'm doing the Thanksgiving dinner and I'm tired of doing the same old thing. I've been looking thru magazines but I hate trying something new that I've not tested on people before. I did find a really good brussel sprout dish that I made and was going to take to a potluck, but I liked it so much that I kept it for myself *grin So post your menu, tell me what you like best and you might just be a debut item on my Thanksgiving table.

Here's my usual -

Fried turkey - the brother does this and it's wonderful He does 2
Dressing - cornbread
Broccoli and cheese casserole
Green bean casserole
Heavenly hash
Cranberry relish - I started making it homemade several years ago- before then it was that can-shaped jelly
Sweet potato casserole - Boston Market recipe
Rolls

Pecan pie - Rob makes
Pumpkin pie - Mom makes
tirimisu - sister brings
Banana cream cake - sil makes
apple tart - I make

I'm going to swap out the green bean casserole for the brussel sprouts this year. Give me some more ideas, please!

I make stuffing, sweet potatoes and mashed/whipped white potatoes.

Sadly, I eat all three as well.

Thanksgiving is my absolute most favorite meal. There is just something about the combination of all of it that is awesome! And I love having leftovers so that I can eat it for three days.

Glow Pop made me skeeeeery.

Boil up a small ham as an extra meat along with your turkey. If no one eats it, you can make sandwiches. It will go with every bit of that other stuff you have. Boy, my salvia glands were distroyed by radiation but I could swear I was drooling.

I don't think I've ever had boiled ham. Is that a Canadian thing? We usually have ham for Christmas, with stone ground mustard and pineapples and cloves and those icky maraschino cherries all over it, roasted in the oven.

Our grocery stores carry small hams, about 2 to 3 lbs all pre wrapped, honey ham, black forest ham, boneless, these are pre cooked and can be eaten cold so they can be heated by boiling (quicker than baking)if you want to serve with hot food.

Put that small ham in a crockpot to cook all day. That's what I do. Leaves me room on the stove for other stuff.

We always make up a menu and have everyone sign what they will bring. Then almost everyone decides to bring something else too - so we have much more food than we can ever eat!
Brother fries the turkeys - that's the most important part
Moma has always made the cornbread dressing. last year I was there with her - to sortof guide her along - watching to make sure nothing really strange went into it (since her stroke in '06 she does some weird things when cooking - like a few months ago, she made tuna salad for her and Daddy & chopped up mini marshmallows and put in it! bless his heart, Daddy ate it without complaint).

Anyway, either me or sissy will be there to watch over the dressing again.

I always make a side dish of wild rice. I just cook the rice and then mix in some sauteed mushrooms, onions, celery, and chopped almonds and salt and pepper. It's wonderful nestled next to stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy over them all. Yum, I am salivating, too.

This year, though, I am looking for low-cal, low-fat suggestions. Anyone?

A couple of years ago I cut up some sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots into same size pieces (you could do potatoes as well if you weren't doing them separate) brushed them with just a little bit of olive oil and then roasted them at 400°F for like 20 minutes or so I think it was, until they were tender with a nice brown on them.

I think I used salt, pepper, and sage on the parsnips and carrots as seasoning, and a bit of cinnamon on the sweet potatoes, maybe a bit of nutmeg would be good.

Any chance of coming round Your normal sounds lovely, and we don't have a thanksgiving.

If the fried Turkey wasn't so good I would suggest a Turducken, we had one for Christmas last year, and it was fantastic.

The only thing I can add is Roast potatoes. If you cut them to roasting size, parboil them, then let them cool you can cut them as if you were making chips, but leaving the bottom quarter uncut. You end up with a roast potato with a fan(ish) of crispness (because it doesn't actually fan that much you still have a lot of normal potato as well).

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else suggests.

I have to admit I was really looking forward to your menu, I forget that you don't have Thanksgiving. You can come to my house if you want. I was thinking of trying a Turducken for Christmas as it will be a smaller gathering.

The potatoes sound yummy and would be good with a sprinkling of rosemary infused olive oil and some rosemary sprigs.

Yay! My absolute favorite holiday is coming!!!!!

I'm in charge of veggies this year.

I'm making my spinach, mandarin orange, mushroom, and toasted almond salad with honey poppyseed dressing.

Also making fresh roasted asparagus.

I need one more, though. I'm intrigued by your Brussel sprout dish. How about a recipe?

Oh, I forgot about asparagus. I usually do asparagus at Easter as it's so abundant then, hmmmm.

Here's the Brussel sprout recipe:

3 lbs brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved lengthwise
1 lbs thick cut bacon, cut into 1" pieces (I used peppered)
3 Tbs EVOO
2 onions, halved and thinly sliced
salt and pepper - if you use peppered bacon you don't need the pepper

Boil brussels for 5 minutes in salted water. Drain and rinse under cold water.

In lg skillet cook bacon until crisp. Drain, reserving bacon fat. In same pan add 2 Tbls evoo and stir in onions, cook until browned but not crisp. Remove. Add 2 tbs of bacon fat and remaining olive oil, increase to high heat add brussel sprouts and cook until browned.

In lg bowl toss all together. I added roasted red peppers to give it some red. It looked great in the big wooden bowl, too bad I was greedy and no one else got to see it

I ate on it for almost a week and was sad when it was gone. It went great with meatloaf.

That does sound good, and so does geg's spinach salad.

I cook petite brussel sprouts in a frying pan with some EVOO and some fresh garlic. I like them to turn brown and a little crispy. Mmmm - good.

My one requirement for Thanksgiving is cranberry nut bread. I've loved it since I was a kid, and DW makes it for me every year, even though I'm the only one in the family who likes it (well, except for DD, who eats everything).

The recipe is an ancient family secret, but you can also find it printed on the bag of Ocean Spray cranberries.

Make sure the recipe is written down somewhere else. My absolute favorite oatmeal-raisin cookie recipe was on the Quaker Oats box and then one day I went to make it and they had changed the recipe!!! (Fortunately, my best friend who had told me about the recipe had put it in her cookbook.)

We always do thanksgiving with our neighbors, which is kind of a fun tradition. Our family does most of the cooking, and they fill in the gaps with Boston Market.

The spread is usually as such:

One very large roasted turkey - my dad makes this, and always presents a nice bird

mashed potatoes - usually from Boston Market, but this year, I am making my dairy free yukon gold mash, which is delicious and not awful for you

asparagus

broccoli

homemade cranberry sauce

the canned kind with the can-striations

sweet-potatoes with marshmallows - these are made by the neighbors' grandma; too sweet for me, but my sister loves them

cornbread sage stuffing

pumpkin pie, apple pie, and Julia's super awesome chocolate-mint pudding pie

Also some bread my mom always gets with sunflower seeds, and this other bread with rosemary. It is incredible.

I am planning on bringing some fancy Beligian Trappist beer, too.

OMG, if it doesn't come out of the can in one piece it's a major holiday catastrophe-I was absolutely going to just spoon it out last year because of difficulties and my sister was flipping out that I even suggested it!

Oops-the usual menu at Kali's is pretty typical. Turkey, smashies, cauliflower in cheese sauce, stuffing, gravy, mixed veggies, spartagus Hot from the oven biscuits or crescent rolls.

We have appetizers too. I make stuffed shrooms, there's cheeses n crackers, some dips...ooof I feel full typing this!

I usually make a couple of pies-pecan, pumpkin, coconut custard and whatever other items she needs me to. Except brussel sprouts. She loves them, she can cook them. PU!

Apple cider! I almost forgot.

I love Thanksgiving so much. It's my favorite meal. If I had to request a Last Meal, it would be Thanksgiving dinner.

We have the standard turkey, mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top (and Grand Marnier in the sweet potato goo, so it's delicious and a little boozy) stuffing, cranberry sauce (Ocean Spray bag recipe with grated orange peel thrown in.)

My dad makes green beans, carrots, and cauliflower, steamed until al-dente, and coated with this delightful crust, which is made with crushed Saltine crackers and butter. Lots of butter. You basically melt a lot of butter and put the crushed saltines in, and cook until the saltines start to brown. It looks very liquidey. You pour it over the veggies and as it cools it crisps up. There's always a big fight in my family over people taking a disproportionate crumb-to-veggie ratio. The crumbs are yum. Last year he added brussels sprouts to the veggie list and those are delicious with the crumbs.

*drool*

We always start the day with turkey soup with drop noodles. It's the first thing on the stove and is ready way early, so while watching football and waiting for dinner everyone eats turkey soup.

My dad also makes "Busia's Apple Pie" which is a lot like a dutch apple pie. The topping is all crumbs, made from flour/sugar/butter. Again, the crumbs seem to disappear first.

There are a lot of crumbs in my world.

I love gingersnaps. Trader Joe's has triple ginger snaps that have little candied pieces of ginger in them. Those cookies are deliciously spicy and warm and crispy, with the candied pieces being chewey. SO good with a cup of hot tea.

I think Dutch apple pie would be delicious with ginger snap crumbs. I wouldn't do that for my family since they (we) tend to be sticks in the mud about traditional dinners, but I would definitely try it for a non-holiday apple pie.

Sausage, either links and/or hot
Bacon

Well, I've only had to do the 2nd half the last two years. Before my grandparents passed, I came up here to their house for Thanksgiving dinner. I usually had turkey, stuffing (stove top, thank you), and mashed potatoes. I think I also had either corn or peas for a vegetable, and a salad to start.

Ironically, when I worked at the boat company, I often had to work on Thanksgiving Day. (I was low on the seniority chart in Accounting.......)

The worst thanksgiving I had to work was the one year they had the Backyard Brawl (Pitt-West Virginia) on Thanksgiving night. We provided shuttle service to the game, and I had to help sell tickets. Those WVU peeps that came down during that shuttle were blitzed and obnoxious........

I don't have any good suggestions. My family does New England Pilgrim food for Thanksgiving (practically everything is the same color, lol!): turkey, bread stuffing, gravy, creamed onions, mashed potatoes, turnip, butternut squash, corn bread muffins and cranberry sauce. We even step out a little and have a green salad. Dessert is apple pie, pumpkin pie and Chocolate turkeys (woo-hoo, thank goodness my Dad is a chocoholic like I am).

That's pretty much the meal we've had every year since I was a little girl (including mince meat pie *yuck* when my dad's mother was alive), I like it because of its tradition, but its nothing I go wow over.

Fortunately we aren't traditional with the apps and we all usually bring something different every year, although my favorite is marinated grilled venison when my brother has gone hunting. He marinates it in a soy sauce base. It's tender and yummy.

Have a great meal!

I'm not a fan of the creamed onion, but I found a recipe that looks very similiar to what my DH or my brother does. (My parents, brothers, SILs, DH and I all hang out in the kitchen while dinner is being made. Since I don't enjoy cooking and they do, I just make sure everyones drinks are filled. )

INGREDIENTS
1 cup pearl onions
4 cups water
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 cups milk
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS
Peel onions, and drop into boiling water. Cook until tender. Drain, reserving liquid. Set onions aside while you make sauce.
Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour to make a paste. Mix together cooking water and milk. Add milk mixture slowly to the saucepan, stirring constantly, and cook until thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add onions, and transfer to a serving dish.

Does that sound good to you?

(Nana liked both kinds of mincemeat. I seem to remember a year when she was lamenting that she could not longer find the real thing.)

114. "How about stuffed onions?"
--4 large yellow onions
--1 handful of baby spinach
--1 chicken and apple sausage (I think a spicy one would be good, too!)
--1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
--2 T chopped pecans (or walnuts or pine nuts)
--1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
--1 T olive oil

The Directions.

This is enough filler for 4 large onions, and I used my 6.5 quart crockpot. If you're interested in cooking more than 4, increase the ingredients, and feel free to stack the onions. They will still cook.

Peel and core the onions. If you don't have one of those apple-corer thingies, this will be hard to do. I tried to core with a knife, and found it immensely difficult. I used the corer 4 times for each onion---you want a pretty big hole.

Chop up the spinach and bell pepper, and put it in a mixing bowl. Chop up the sausage and add it to the bowl along with the chopped pecans and the Parmesan cheese. Mix well.

Put the 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the bottom of your crockpot, and swirl around so the bottom is coated.

Stuff each onion with as much filling as you can.

Put the onions into the crockpot.

Cover and cook on high for 4-6 hours, or on low for 7-8. I was surprised how long they took to cook. I cooked ours on high for a bit over 5 hours.

The onions are done when they have turned golden brown and are pliable.

These and the creamed onions sound really good. I think I would be the only one eating the creamed onions, but I think I may add these to the Thanksgiving roster. I don't cook anything in the slow cooker, so that will be a good thing to add, something that doesn't take up my stove top or oven.

I make hot apple-cranberry cider in my slow cooker. It has apple juice, cranberry juice, mulling spices, a bit of brown sugar, and a pat of butter. (I know, the butter sounds a little gross but you don't notice it in the cider except that it gives it very nice "mouth-feel.")

I put a bottle of spiced rum next to the slow cooker for those who want to spike their hot cider.

It makes the house smell AMAZING.

Seems that way, doesn't it? I'm all about the butter.

I just do "some" when it comes to proportion of apple to cranberry. I don't think I'd do 1/2 and 1/2 because the cranberry takes over. Maybe 2/3 and 1/3. 1 pat of butter and about a tablespoon on brown sugar. Wrap up mulling spices (cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, cardamom) in cheesecloth and let it sit in crockpot on high 2-3 hours.

Also works with red wine, but I wouldn't add the butter to that.

My Thanksgiving menu? Whatever my mom puts on the table. I will either contribute a dessert of some sort, or buy the ingredients for the green bean casserole. My mom's kitchen was just not designed for more than one person to be in there working, so I usually stand in the dining room on the other side of the range, and stir stuff for her, or lift it over to the table when it's ready.

What we usually have:
Smoked turkey
Mashed potatoes
Candied sweet potatoes (Dad has to have)
Green bean casserole (Mom, me, and Sis have to have this)
Cornbread Dressing
Giblet gravy
Lima beans (BIL has to have)
Deviled eggs
Rolls

Dessert:
Pumpkin pie (Dad and my son have to have)
Pecan pie (Dad has to have)
Lemon meringue pie (BIL has to have)

Fruitcake is SO missing from the menu. Shocking.

I wonder how deep-fried turkeys turn out? Mr. Mints is sorely tempted to get something else that can sit in the garage three hundred and sixty-four days a year in order to keep the Christmas tree stand major company.
Maybe we can ship the five thousand gallons of used peanut oil to some crazy Northwest entreprenuer to power his/her converted Yugo. eta: oops

Fruitcake for Thanksgiving?
It's a Christmas thing. As well as the part of the batter Mom steamed as a pudding rather than baked as a cake and served with hard sauce. Mmmmmmmmm

It hasn't had enough time to soak in the Brandy or Amaretto by Thanksgiving.

»Fruitcake for Thanksgiving?«

If Tummy gets to rush Christmas, so do I.
Besides, if you really want to be honest, that fruitcake has been sotting itself up for years in the back of whatever closet it's been stored in, and it hasn't made a difference.
Probably turned into a foot thick slab of Krell metal by now.

All those Brandy and Amaretto bottles out back in the trash? "I was soaking the fruitcake again, dear". hehehe

54. "RE: Your Thanksgiving Menu"

I have to admit, I've not had to plan a Thanksgiving day meal for a long time. My SIL always has it at her house, and I volunteer to bring something, but it's never really a big deal. I did make some apple crisp last year, and pies or cakes in previous years. It never is the same thing, and we never seem to have the exact same menu.

I have not liked that some years SIL makes instant mashed potatoes with skim milk. It's Thanksgiving, for Pete's sake. It should be real mashed potatoes or nothing at all. I never served instant mashed potatoes at my house, YMMV. I would gladly make the mashed potatoes, so maybe I should inquire early this year. If my niece-in-law from Idaho who likes to cook (I have 2 NIL's from Idaho) is there, she will make the homemade kind of mashed potato. I make better gravy, though, but I don't want to make it sound like I'm horning in by asking them to let me make the gravy.

here are our 'staples' that are a little different from yours:

* rice stuffing (browned ground beef, white rice, tons of parmesan cheese all mixed together, then strips of raw bacon on top, bake in oven at 350 til the bacon is crisp) i think this might actually be a family recipe b/c i've never seen anyone else eat it or even have heard of it. it's delicious, though.

* squash soup (pretty simple, basically just butternut squash pureed with chicken stock, ginger, cinnamon, salt, and pepper, but IMO the maple-walnut butter on top really makes this dish. toast some walnuts, mix in unsalted room temp butter, add some maple syrup, stir all together, dollop on top of soup)

we also have pretty much everything you have:

fried turkey
green bean casserole
mashed potatoes
gravy
buttered corn (bird's eye i think)
broccoli/cheese (also bird's eye)
rolls
yam bake
stuffing
cranberry sauce

my MIL also makes acorn squash stuffed w/ sausage stuffing. very, very good.

dessert is usually store-bought pumpkin and pecan pies. this year, i'm making a pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin b/c i did that w/ our halloween pumpkin and it came out delicious! the texture was much better than the canned stuff.

in years past i have also made grasshopper pie, and i believe i got the recipe from someone here on OT! it's amazingly awesomely delicious!

I think I've posted this recipe before, but here it is again. It's one of DD's favorites, so I think I will volunteer to make it this year.

Sea Foam Salad

2 pkgs of Lime Jello
1 8 oz package of cream cheese
1 can 1 lb 4 oz crushed pineapple
12 oz container of cool whip

Dissolve jello in 2 cups hot water. Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Add water to juice to make 1 3/4 cup liquid. Cool in refrigerator until partially set. Beat jello until smooth with mixer. Add pineapple, cream cheese and cool whip. Spread in 9 x 12 pan and chill until set.

I'm normally in charge of dessert, since I'm a baker, not a cooker. Since I was 17, I've been going to my mother-in-law's for Thanksgiving and DH's grandmother does almost all of the cooking. I'm not sure how much she'll be doing this year though, since she just had major knee surgery.

This year I will definitely bring apple crisp. I brought it for the first time 3 years ago, and now Pappy (DH's grandfather) requests it. I might bake a New York cheesecake also. I normally only bust one out for DH's birthday and for Christmas, but I just didn't have time for his birthday this year. Since we have a 1:00 dismissal the day before Thanksgiving, I could probably make one that day. The tricky part with that is just watching the temperature for the 2 1/2 hours it's in the oven, so it doesn't crack. In the six years I've been baking them, I've only cracked two.

Place witty comment here.

75. "RE: Your Thanksgiving Menu"
No recipes from me - just a funny story about my mom and my MIL.

A little back story - My MIL cooks a full dinner every Sunday and expects everyone to be there. She then has coffee and cake later in the afternoon and the table is usually loaded with lots of baked goods.

Every year for Thanksgiving, I would cook dinner for my mom, DH and our girls. We would go over to my MIL's for coffee and cake later in the afternoon. My MIL always invited us for Thanksgiving dinner but my mom was never comfortable with all those people for an entire afternoon, so this was our compromise. I think it irritated my MIL (she's very controlling).

One year, we go over for coffee and cake and my mother looks at the table and sees 5 different types of apple pie, 2 different types of pumpkin pie, a chocolate pudding pie, an apple cake, a cheesecake, and lots of cookies. My MIL asks Mom what she would like to have. With a wicked gleam in her eye, my mother said, "Do you have any coconut cream pie?" Everybody (except my MIL) got my mom's point and laughed pretty hard.

The following year, my MIL had a coconut cream pie on that table and made sure my mom knew it. It was the only pie that got finished up that year. Everyone was happy for something different.

Soon after that my mom found out she was diabetic so I would always make something sugar-free for her because my MIL would never do it. My mom would eat whatever I made while my MIL would sit there trying to tempt her with all the sugar-laden stuff and moaning that she could NEVER give up sugar if the doctors told her she was diabetic.

I think that this year, in honor of my mom's memory, I will bring a coconut cream pie to my MIL's for Thanksgiving... (because I'm a bad girl, just like my Mom!)

Every year I try to boycott mashed potatoes, but I get outvoted.

I'm considering making green bean casserole this year. It's been about five years since we've made it. Might be time to bring it back because it's easy and the kids love it.

I'm also going easier this year. I tried to get fancy on a few things and it's just too much work.

So the menu will probably be:
Turkey in the Nesco or deep fried
Sweet potatoes with a smidge of butter and brown sugar
Dressing (I'll call it this because while I prefer the term "stuffing," we do not stuff our bird)made with beer bread
Cranberries
Green bean casserole or other veggie (steamed broccoli or such)
2 pumpkin pies

I see Tummy will have cornbread dressing. We will too. And it's never stuffed in the bird. Always a big pan of dressing - with chicken scattered all through. (My grandmother always used to put a big piece of white chicken meat in each corner of the pan - one of my uncles & I would always fight to be sure we got to one of the corners first.)

I never had the stuffing stuff (till I tried that Stove-Top stuffing for DH once).

So do you have cornbread dressing or stuffing?
Do you have th oyster stuffing stuff?

Another side story - once when I was working day care in south FL, we would have a big Thanksgiving meal at the school - parents signing up to bring food. I made a list that included dressing. One of the teachers told me I forgot to put salad on the list. I said I hadn't thought about having a tossed salad but if they thought we needed it, we could add it to the list. So she then asked me why I had dressing on the list and what I intended to put it on if we weren't having salad?

I made Stove Top one year, I was working retail and didn't have time or was too tired to bake the cornbread and biscuits ahead of time. I thought my family was going to stone me. Just about ever since then others have offered to bring the dressing. Works for me. This year my mother's kitchen is in phase "mess" with renovations so I'm making the cornbread and biscuits and she's coming over the day before to do the dressing. I guess we are an anti-Stove Top family.

I think when my BIL commented about Stove Top, I gave him "the look." The same one he got when he discovered I didn't have "real butter."

You host it at your house, you choose the menu is my motto. And for the 16 years DH and I have been together, I have hosted about 26 of the events.

I remember the year I decided we would not have a sit-down Christmas dinner. I waited for the storm, but it went over very well.

Oh, and the butter thing. I normally have butter in my fridge, but we don't eat regular real butter for bread. We use Country Crock. I must have made some cookies or something or used the butter for a recipe, which is why I didn't have it. But you would have thought that I was serving him McDonald's for dinner on Thanksgiving.

Now I have real butter, honey butter, Country Crock, I Can't Believe Light and, "crusty butter" (<-- laughs again really hard at Frodis and Maroon Clown).

My mom always made it from scratch, so I do, too. I've never understood the popularity of boxed stuffing. It's really easy to make. Mom would always use stale bread, then she would let us kids break the bread up into little pieces. Melt some butter in the pan, add the celery and onions, add some poultry seasonings, then toss the cooked stuff with the bread.

My family uses the words dressing and stuffing interchangeably. Most of it is baked in a pan, but my dad does put a little bit inside the bird for flavoring. There's always a bit of a competition for the bit of stuffing that comes out of the bird.

Our dressing contains the turkey giblits, fried up with onion and celery, sage and other seasonings added to the toasted bread (white, wheat, rye, and any leftover anything else that didn't have the good sense to get eaten.) It all gets moistened up with turkey soup broth and baked until the top is crunchy. I love the crunchy top.

The youngest kid's job was always to stand there and toast all of the bread. It wasn't a popular job. As the eldest I do remember the one bright Thanksgiving day when I graduated to cranberry sauce and my brother had to take over toaster duty.

I usually buy stove top when I get it in the cardboard "can" rather than the box. They have the directions for single servings as well as making more.

ETA: I usually make "real" stuffing at thanksgiving, but I like to have some once in awhile during the year and the "insta-stuffing" is just so convenient.

I am food separatist. I normally do not like different foods touching each other on the plate.

However, I make an exception at Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving food is so symbiotic that it's enjoyment on a whole different level to mix and match my forksful. I agree with your turkey/stuffing/gravy/cranberry combo. I also like a combo of turkey, a bit of the sweet potato goo, and a bit of the vegetable crumbs (mentioned above.)

Well now you mentioned it I'm sure it will get all shy and break again.

It does seem to be correct every once in awhile. It will break and stay broken the same way for months, but I dunno if the correct time has ever lasted more than a few days.

133. "RE: Your Thanksgiving Menu"
LAST EDITED ON 11-11-08 AT 01:49 AM (EST)

Debating between inviting myself to my sister's house, staying home alone, or seeing if anyone invites me. If I go to my sister's we'll (traditionally, at least) have roast turkey with bread stuffing, possibly ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, probably yams or sweet potatoes (which I pay no attention to), corn, green beans (possibly a green bean casserole, too), corn bread (she calls it spoon bread, but it isn't), fresh rolls, fresh cranberry sauce, green salad, and at least 4 pies, a tart, and possibly a cake or cakes.

The best part will be the appetizers--many of which I will help prepare, including a variety of cheese and seafood based dips and spreads, and--best of all--smoked oysters, caviar, and cold shrimp.

If I stay home it will depend on my mood. I may do, kinda, the whole thing and then try to figure out what to do with leftovers. I may just put together some shrimp, cheese, oysters, and caviar and say screw the rest. I may just say screw it all.

If I get invited elsewhere I have no idea, but if I decide to blow off inviting myself to my sister's it's doubtful that I'll accept going anywhere else. The whole concept of that scenario is just too different to contemplate right now. As an adult, Thanksgiving was always my meal to do for our parents and whoever else was in town that cared to come. It's just a weird holiday for me now, and has been since I stopped formally holding it.

I've a feeling Christmas will be weirder, yet. That one's always been just us, or going to my other sister's. This year my SIL wants me to accompany them to my MIL's. I just dunno about that. I don't know how I'll feel about driving past our traditional holiday spot where my sister is in VA to get to where my MIL is in FL. I'm not sure I can pull that off without breaking, and I don't want to ruin anyone else's holiday. Even when we stayed home together the past 2 years I was always conflicted about decorating or trying to just ignore the whole thing. I think that, alone, that part will be even harder as there's no way to really ignore it by yourself, without having to also try to ignore the fact that you're ignoring, iykwim.

I haven't seen either of my sisters in almost 3 years. Part of me really wants to see them and be part of a "tradtional" holiday; part of me is totally afraid of doing so. For Thanksgiving, at least, I may just suck it up, call my sister, and see where it goes. I can always look to see if I can put in any job applications while I'm there. Peep meet in Columbus, anyone?

I vote inviting yourself to your sister's. It'll still be hard, but if her Thanksgiving's are anything like ours it's very hectic and busy, in a good way, and maybe that will help you not having so much quiet time to well, be quiet. You have too much time to do that already. Plus you'll have good food

You can see how Thanksgiving goes before making Christmas plans.

Hugs.
