LAST EDITED ON 06-26-08 AT 09:05 AM (EST)Hands over my "I buy weird produce" crown to MC. I had to google them, and that didn't even help much with what to do with them. I did find this link http://www.tamarillo.com/Tamarillo/servlet/Serve?file=Recipes.htm

I love buying weird produce. It's how discovered the joys of kohlrabi. But the cassava was a mistake. The local fruit and veggie place had a pile of yams and cassavas, mixed together. I had been on the lookout for proper yams (not sweet potatoes) because DH likes them. Not knowing that a yam looks like a hairy potatoe, I went for the cassava. I got home, all proud of myself and produced my "yam". DH looks at me and says "What the heck is that?" I held it up and proclaimed "It's a yam" He shook his head and declared "That ain't no yam that I've ever seen". Tahnks for the tamarillo recipes, I can do something with that.

Around here a yam is a sweet potato. What your differentiation, what the difference between a proper yam and a sweet potato??

A yam is more like an Edo.Root veggie, kinda greyish white flesh. The outside has coconut-like hair without the hard shell, if that makes any sense. copyright smokeysmom

LAST EDITED ON 06-26-08 AT 10:04 AM (EST)I've only used cassava once and made mexican "hashbrowns" with them for dinner. Never used tamarillos. Let me know what you do with them! Oh, and I forgot to add... Paula Dean and her family did a trip to some island nation where they had cassava bread. I guess cassavas can be ground down into a floury substance. -A Shamrocktastic SharTribe Creation!

You can't just throw down "mexican hashbrowns" and not tell me how you did it!Most things I've seen for cassavas involve tapioaca pudding and baked goods. I don't bake and tapioca pudding belongs over in jbug's food thread, so anything savoury to do with my cassava would be appreciated. I could think of something unsavoury to do with it, but I won't go there. copyright smokeysmom

Just make sure to get all the nasty peel off. I then shredded it, tossed it with an all-purpose mexican seasoning blend, put it in skillet with some canola oil, and let it cook for awhile (cassava takes awhile to cook). I then added diced onions, peppers, jalepenos, and precooked chorizo to the top, flipped it all and cooked for awhile longer. I plated it with cheese, cilantro and salsa on top. I probably had sour cream on the side, too. Can't remember. It was decent. -A Shamrocktastic SharTribe Creation!

Wooow. I get all tingly when you oh-so-casually toss out a recipe like that. You make it sound so easy.Is that "decent" as in "reasonably good, but not spectacular" or the 80's "decent"? On another note, I have heard 2 people in the last week use the word "grody". They were not using it in a self-mocking way. Is this word coming back?

I don't know about all the other cool people, but I've never dropped grody from my vocabulary. My mom said it when I was a little kid, and it stuck with me somehow. I get weird looks sometimes - isn't it a perfectly serviceable word? Kurt Vonnegut says: So it goes for Slice's blog.

When I lived in Indonesia we used to eat cassavas all the time. Usually fried, like french fries..as they are the closest things to potatoes. I would just cut them up, toss them in oil and sprinkle with course salt and pepper, bake them for 30 or so minutes at 450 to make cassava fries.Good luck! Goin' Tuscan from Surfkitten 2008

A tip for the impatient person I do this with eggplant as well, but put your super starchy veggie and eggplant in a bowl with enough water to cover the bottom, 1/4 to 1/3 cup, cover the bowl and nuke veggie for a couple of minutes. This saves a large amount of time and seriously cuts calories with most eggplant dishes, and shaves off 10-15 minutes on the starchy stuff. Starchy veggies like cassavas don't absorb the water evenly and don't steam well, but that's just my experience....I don't have enough patience to do much else with 'em. The cassava could be done up like home Mexican home fries. Steam a couple of minutes, coat with olive oil, sprinkle a pinch of cayenne - salt is used later since it draws out liquids. Dunno what to recommend for the tamarillo. I eat 'em straight.

But, you forgot to mention that you should skin a tamarillo before eating.Sorry, Weltek. I've never made anything with them, but I found this blog that, along with the writer's less than salutory first experience with them includes some comments with ways to prepare them that sound quite tasty. http://cookie-crumbles.blogspot.com/2005/11/beware-tamarillo.html Good luck.
