"Pre-Owned Auto purchase advice sought" |
I really want to trade my '96 Lexus 300E for an SUV model. My parents & DH too have a little trouble with the bending to get into a car (what did we ever do when all we had were cars & trucks?) So, anyone have experience with a Lexus SUV (small one - not one of the big guys)? Also, any sussgestions of best way to search out prices for used models? Thanks

To be honest, all you're getting with the Lexus RX300 (I believe that's the one you mean) is an expensive Toyota Rav-4. Same model, basically, just with more expensive parts. Like any luxury division of a car company, there's a lot of caveats in buying the more expensive alternative. If you have your heart set on a luxury SUV, I'd actually suggest you look at the Acura MDX. Very sturdy frame, the engine's tough, and Acuras have an unbelievably long life - a couple of my friends still drive 91 and 92 Integras with no issues whatsoever. I'd sniff around ebaymotors and craigslist to get an idea of pricing. Tribe is far-out.

Don't be hatin'.My pseudo-SUV gets fab mileage and cost under $19k for the fully-loaded model. Plus, it's a 5-speed ^__^ Tribe is far-out.

Maybe a "small van" would do as well. I'm definatley NOT wanting a big hunky thing - those scare me as well. I just need a vehicle that is higher off the ground - but not like a truck - don't want to be climbing UP either; and has more headroom. Since I love my Lexus, that is what I'm thinking, but am willing to look at another make as long as the quality is there. You get what I mean about the difficulty of olders people bending and scrunching to get into a car (most of which are much lower to the ground than vans or suvs).

Honestly? My, uh, cubemobile takes up no more space than my Accord did. Weight's similar, too. It's the hauling capacity that I love. I crammed an entire one-bedroom apartment (minus the large furniture) into the cargo hold. My friends who sit in the back love the legroom. The Element's especially forgiving if you spill stuff on the ground (in my case, usually ashes)- washable rubber floors!
Tribe is far-out.

LAST EDITED ON 03-19-07 AT 02:57 PM (EST)I tend to feel somewhat the same, Geg, but I fear I'll be outvoted by Nolay on our next "towing" vehicle purchase (not our daily driver). We leased a truck to see if we NEEDED a truck. Well, we haul a lot of landscaping crap, so it was nice for that, but we can achieve higher gas mileage with an SUV and jointly owned trailer (my family all wants to purchase one together). We'll also be getting a fishing boat in the near future, so it needs to tow that. Personally, I'd just get a powerful station wagon for these purposes and be happy. He pretty much refuses, though. Kick him for me, will ya?
