"Anniversary of Our First "War on Drugs""
Actually, Prohibition, our War on Alcohol, began this date in 1919.

And LOOK HOW WELL THAT WENT!

Arguably, it was also the birth of Organized Crime, our first War on Drugs. We really need to think a leedle more about these "wars" we like to wage.

Yup, couldn't possibly agree with you more about that.

Edited to add: I just feel I was a little too flip about that. What I really want to say about this kind of thing is how counterproductive it all is. Billions of dollars spent and millions of lives affected and nothing really changes, which is not unlike the war in Iraq.

The "war" on alcohol and drugs are doomed to failure, much as our "war" in Iraq is doomed. All of these problems are caused by deeply seated societal problems that simply cannot be solved through law enforcement or military means. In the case of alcohol and drugs, you've got multiple causations from genetics, learned behavior, mental and emotional problems, and medical issues. I fail to see how law enforcement in any way addresses those and how it ever could. In the case of Iraq, you've got ethnic and religious causes. I fail to see how a military solution and the arbitrary imposition of democracy on a society not evolved enough to achieve it on its own will constructively addresses the situation.

Not only do we never learn, we let our bad ideas filter into other areas of life and the world.

The strongest man in the world is he who stands alone. — Henrik Ibsen
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. - Henry David Thoreau

Of course, there were certain sanctioned MEDICAL uses for alcohol.

Yup. My grandpa was a doctor.

My mom told me how, ironically, my grandparents never used to drink or have alcohol in the house until they couldn't have it.
