"Rev. Fred Rogers, 1928-2003" |
LAST EDITED ON 02-27-03 AT 06:10 AM (EST)Mr. Rogers has taken that last Trolley to the Kingdom of Make-Beleive. Rev. Fred Rogers passed away of stomach cancer earlier today. The ordained Presbyterian minister's "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" ran from 1967-2001 (and still runs re-runs), and he made spots for children explaining the anniversary of Sept. 11th. One of his trademark red sweaters hangs in the Smithsonian. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest award to a civilian) in 2002 by President Bush. *wipes a tear* I had a love-hate thing going on with this man. I loved him as a kid--he was brand new back then! Then of course as a teenager and young adult I made fun of him, then I had kids of my own and WOW! I couldn't believe how great he was! What a gentle caring individual! He will be missed. Play those re-runs forever! wheeeze

I say farewell to one of my childhood heroes. Although I haven't watched him in years, I still remember him as the person that taught me that grown-ups could actually care about and respect children, as well as love them. He didn't sugar coat a child's world but showed us that children's concerns, thoughts and feelings were just as legitimate as a grown person's.When I was 6, I wrote Mr. Rogers a letter. I was very surprised to get a letter back, signed by himself, that said how proud he was of me for having written, and especially for knowing how to spell my own name. I kept that cherished letter in my sock drawer, where I kept all my other treasures, and would take it out every night to remind myself that I had a friend in Mr. Rogers. I wish him peace and send him my love.

Amen to that, Scott. You know, I was 13 when he started, but I never felt a need to ridicule him cuz he was just so kind and non-treatening. LAST EDITED ON 02-27-03 AT 10:08 AM (EST)Mr. Rogers was my babysitter in kindegarten for the 15 minutes between when the bus dropped me off and when my mom got home. I was told by my mom - "Go in the house, sit down and turn on Mr. Rogers and DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING." He kept me from being afraid of being alone. It is a sad day Rest in Peace, Mr. Rogers.

This guy will definitely be missed. He was a staple for so many kids. I thought that the trolley going through his house was so cool and I would love when it would come by!!Post your other memories of the show. It is so hard to remember the show b/c it has been so long since I have seen it. I also remember him changing his shoes and vest every day and the small puppets. "It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, A beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?..."

Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was an institution in my house when I was growing up! He was so nice and comforting and always spoke calmly and he had his routines that he did everyday. Here is a quote from him:"There is a universal truth I have found in my work," he said. "Everybody longs to be loved. And the greatest thing we can do is let somebody know that they are loved and capable of loving." He had many fans! Sheila

I too shed a little tear when I heard the news this morning.Being in the media, I had the pleasure of interviewing him on the radio 2 different times, once right before he retired. He was a highly intelligent, caring loving man, and he will be greatly missed in this world. Rest In Peace, Mr. Rogers

Sad but happy, I'm glad if he was in pain that he is past it now. It's like closing a door on parts of childhood though. I was so sad to hear when Mr Dressup died (Canadians will know him) and this hits the same nerve.

I'll miss him too -- although I thought of him as geeky when I was a teen, the fact is I watched his show every day as a kid and he was such a calm, peaceful and gentle person. I'm glad I had him in my neighborhood. Vugarity is simply the conduct of other people. -- Oscar Wilde

I appreciate him and his work a LOT more now as an adult than I did as a child. My mom likes to tell this story:I'm six years old, and staying home sick from school. There wasn't much on TV, and I'm flipping the channels (manually, of course, we didn't have remotes), and I get to Mr. Rogers, and I flip right past it. My mom asked me, "Don't you want to watch Mr. Rogers? That's a nice show." And I said, "No, Mommy, I don't like Mr. Rogers. He's so patronizing." Let me reiterate...I was SIX. LOL Lights a candle for Mr. Rogers
