"New Discoveries"
Besides my recent findings on capers and their uses....

I've discovered.......... get ready......

sea salt on chocolate.
To die for!!!!
I bought some of that reduced/marked down left over from Christmas chocolate. 1 with almonds and cherries - yum! - and 1 with sea salt sprinkled on top.
I've always liked chocolate covered pretzels - I like salt and sweet, but......
the sea salt is a whole new game!
I can't wait till our annual Kidney Foundation Chocolate Fantasy day out to see if anyone serves this.

So, now it's your turn. What discoveries have you made that we all need to know about.

Elvis in In The House - Capt'n 2010
I realize I'm probably the last one here to know about chocolate & sea salt, but ya'll should have told me!

...you probably didn't know.

Sea salt does not contribute to high blood pressure.

Chocolate? Not so much.

Really? Why not? Is it because regular table salt also has iodine, silicate and sugar in it? Sea salt just has salt in it. Which, I expect, is what makes it saltier-tasting.

I always thought that the sodium was the problem with sodium chloride.

ETA: now that I read the sentence above, I think maybe the chloride isn't so good either...

The iodine is to keep us from getting goiters. The silicate is so that it runs freely and doesn't clump. I assume the sugar is cheap filler, which is what we used to use a certain kind of sugar for in the lab I used to work at.

I can't find the hard data, but a lot of sites seem to make that claim.

I assume for one of two reasons.

If you use coarse salt vs finely ground salt you will get less salt per measurement. So there can be less sodium per teaspoon.

Additionally some say the other minerals that aren't purified away have various assorted health benefits.

Regardless of what kind of salt I still think moderation is probably the best bet.

What Snidget said.

As well, it may be that the refining process makes it saltier?

Capers! They're really yummy!

Though I guess everyone has now heard of that already...

I got some sea salt chocolate caramels for Christmas, but ended up picking the salt off. *shrug*

Just in case you haven't been in that thread recently, capers were new to me too. And everyone else seemed to know more about them that what they look like.

Since I already knew about capers, my newest discovery has been Garded veggie chips. They don't sound that great, but are wonderful!

Another brilliant Tribephyl creation

Pumpkin seeds (still in the shell) float. Makes it alot easier to retrieve them from the sink trap.

Licorice watermelon seeds are actually better than expected, but much more salty.

The frequency and cheapness of Philly-to-NY buses can totally save your azz if you space on the date of a musical you are attending with a friend which you planned to go see several months ago but forgot about due to jetlag and the beginning of student-teaching.

I felt like such a heel when she called today and I was freaking out thinking I would miss it because I slept until 12:30. Thank god it's an 8 o'clock show is all I can say. Also, thanks, Megabus, for the $11 ticket.

I have recently discovered that: <sarcasm>

-even though I went to college for 5-1/2 years, I have no idea how difficult college is.

-even though I dated guys when I was 17 - 24 and have been married for almost 23 years, I have no idea what men are really like and even though EVERY guy that I've known who is just like my daughter's scumbag boyfriend never came to any good, he is going to be the one exception to all my years of experience.

-even though I worked and paid my own way through college, have managed our family's finances for 23 years, and own my own bookkeeping business, I am not smart enough to discuss my daughter's spending habits with her.

I am a complete and total idiot. Or so I've been told.

I got sliced!

I wish the aliens would return my daughter.

Chipoltes in adobo sauce. I know, this is not a new item, but last night was the first time I ever cooked anything with them (made chipolte macaroni 'n cheese). I'm in love! Now, I need more recipes that I can throw these in, as the mac 'n cheese has way too many calories and fat to make very often.

Chipotle butter. Just mash some into some softened butter and pop it in the fridge. Really good on warm bread.

Chipotle mayonnaise (if you like mayonnaise)

Sautee chicken breasts in a bit of oil. Remove from pan. Stir in a bit of broth to deglaze, a scoop of chipotles and adobo, and a blob of light sour cream. Stir until smooth, simmer. Put chicken breasts back in and simmer until they're done. You could put a sprinkle of cheddar on these or not, if you've avoiding the cheese. Serve with rice.

Put some chipotles in a blender and blend 'em up with a squeeze of lime juice and a little honey. Rub onto a flank steak and let marinate for a few hours. Grill or broil the flank steak until desired doneness. Slice into very thin slices and put it into tortilla shells with fixin's for steak tacos, or use to top a salad.

I had to buy these in a can for some recipe or another - I can't remember.

I loved them, but didn't know what to do with the rest from the can.

So I put one or two each into an icecube tray, added some sauce to each and froze them. Then I popped them separately into a freezer bag.

Now I just take out what I need, chop the cube while it's frozen and throw it into whatever I'm making that would benefit.

Yummy.

Goldfish brand has so many wonderful flavors besides the regular plain old goldfish. I know, whodathunk that I would discover that.

I mentioned before how fond I am of chocolate goldfish. Now there are garden veggie ones - with or without extra cheese

I have also discovered generic Swiss cheese slices for $1.85 instead of brand name for almost double, and the beauty of generic baggies instead of Glad or Ziploc for Conner's school lunches and snacks. The only downside to those is I don't get the box tops for his school, but I can make them up on Juice Juices.

I've also recently discovered my joy for using coupons, including matching them up with weekly sales for maximum savings.
