"Hola! (an introduction)" |
Hi my name is PhoenixMons and I'm a Survivoraholic.Hey out there in OT land! I just found this place today after having been a fanatics/spoilers devotee for almost a year (formerly known as kmsouthern for anyone who may remember me as undoubtedly the only Sean Rector-loving gal at Sblows) I am from Phoenix but I currently live in Belgium (Mons is the city, hence my screenname!). My husband is in the Army, which is why we are way over here in the land of waffles, chocolates, and french fries (called frites). Here's a little known fact: FRENCH fries were invented in Belgium and they are only called French Fries because the slicing technique used to make them is called 'frenching'. Bet you didn't know that! I have a daughter who is 15 months old and I love finding new places to shamelessly show off my cutie for absolutely no reason http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/k/kaiatalisa Well that's about all there is to know about PhoenixMons. Oh...I was reading the thread about the little "family photo album"...my talent is dancing. I am a dancer (not exotic, sorry) and can shake it like no other - I've even won national dance awards, believe it or not -- *someone whispers "gee, this PhoenixMons gal sure is modest!"*

LAST EDITED ON 11-20-02 AT 10:02 AM (EST)Hi Phoenix and welcome to OT. I can see you are a fun-loving gal so you are going to really enjoy it here at OT. What kind of dancing do you do? Ballroom or Belly? That is interesting about French Fries. I never knew that. Edited to add OMH I was so busy welcoming you I forgot to check the link to see the pic of your daughter. She is absolutely beautiful. Those eyes! Adorable! It's great that you came over here to OT. Have fun

LOL, pretty much everything BUT ballroom and belly! My faves are the two I am best at: tap and street jazz (think Aaliyah music videos), but I am trained in ballet, jazz, and a little bit of Flamenco, Salsa, African, and even Ballet Folklorico (traditional Mexican-style dance with big skirts and loud shoes). I would love to Salsa dance more often my my husband doesn't like any form of dancing in which he knows I will dance circles around him, so salsa is out!And I LOVE your quote about housework...I am the anti-neat freak. I'd love to have that quote on a magnet...but the magnet would probably disappear somewhere into the abyss before I would even get my money's worth.

But of course! She's a total Daddy's girl and he's lovin' every minute of it.But you know, the downside of having one of those kids everyone goes gaga over is that the kid starts to notice. My daughter began to notice at around 8 months so you can imagine by now she's a huge ham, flashing smiles at everyone who passes. And strange people come out of the woodworks when you have a cute kid, too. I have had strangers offer to babysit (yeah like that's gonna happen, ya freak), people telling me my kid is cuter than theirs (now what kind of parent admits something like that???) and even a lady who stopped in the middle of a parking garage full of cars behind her (which were full of angry not-very-happy people) to say how pretty my baby was. There are some STRANGE people out there.

I'm so glad you decided to come play with us on OT. Your Daw level will probably be soaring in no time.Your baby is beautiful. I have a 12 year old named Caitlin and she had the same APGAR scores as your daughter when she was born, plus she had a full head of hair. It wasn't curly as the time, but it is very full and wavy right now - like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. From your greeting, can I assume you speak Spanish? the land of waffles, chocolates, and french fries (called frites). Belgium sounds fattening - LOL!

Me no speaky E-spanish...well I have a good vocabulary but I couldn't conjugate a verb to save my life. My step-dad is Mexican and his family speaks fluent Spanglish. Yeah, they've got all sorts of fake Spanish words that I swear they made up themselves just to confuse people who don't speak English, namely my mother. My mother is the poster child for all of the can't-pronounce-anything-in-Spanish people of the world and my step-dad and I like to tease her about it. "owe-lah coe-moe es-tawce...moo-ee byen ee too?" and I wish I could say that was an exaggeration.Did you now there are like a gazillion little babies named Caitlin running around these days? One of my hobbies is researching names and their origins/meanings and the U.S. Soc Sec. Admin puts out a website with all of the top 1000 names (boys and girls) for each year...Caitlin is like number #5 for 2001 if you include of of its spellings.

I haven't been to a movie theater since I was 7 mos. pregnant - saw Shrek in a Belgian theater and I guess it didn't translate well (French captions for the Belgians) because my husband and our friends and I were the ONLY ones laughing during much of the movie. We're going to borrow HP from a friend though...just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hello Hello Hello,How are things in Belgium? I have relatives in Wassenaar (Holland) and have been to the area quite a bunch. I have been out with my cousins to Brussels for some concerts/dance events. I love it there. I have stayed in Brugge as well with some of my cousins friends. I was over there in March/April for the flower shows/parade, and will be back in Holland around the same time next year for the parade in Haarlem. It really is quite a site to see the flower events in Belgium and Holland in March/April. Have you attended any? Hope all is well. Never Let Them See You Bleed

Nope we haven't been yet. Actually, I was pregnant when we got here (January 2001) and the only traveling we did then was to Paris which was the last week in February when I was only about 2 months pregnant. Had I known more about the "things to see" when we first arrived, I'd have made it a point to go see the Flower carpet in Brussels. It's only every 2 years and it was this year, so we missed it and won't get to see it before we leave (Jan. 2004). I didn't know it was every other year until AFTER it had passed this year. Bummer. I want to go to Zebrugge to see the sandcastles next year (my daughter might appreciate it at that point) and we still haven't been to the Keukenhoff to see the tulips. However, the "real" traveling we want to do is to Spain and Italy. I cannot possibly leave Europe without going to at least Spain and Italy. Really I'd love to do a big trip to Spain, Italy, Greece, Morocco, and Egypt...but there is no way on EARTH we could afford all of that! But a gal can dream........ But we're definitely going to Holland at some point before we leave...it's so close, how can we not? Actually, we're about 15 minutes from the French border, so we're actually not THAT close to Holland...but close relative to say anything in the middle of U.S. to another country we're right next door.

That was spectacular this year. The shear number of tulip varieties was amazing, not to mention the daffodills. Inside all the amarillus were amazing as well. We stayed almost a full day. It was great. I have heard about the sandcastles as well, but have not been to that event yet. Maybe if I can plan a trip around then that would work out. Talk with you soon. LAST EDITED ON 11-20-02 AT 02:42 PM (EST)Hey that's awesome Ronnet! What company do you dance with (if you don't mind my asking, of course). My sister is actually thinking of dancing with the modern company Paul Taylor in NYC. They came to our Univ. and they loved her and a few of them (from PT2, not the main company...she's gotta start out at the bottom of course) said she could live with them when she moves out there to NY...she's actually finishing school and working right now, but I'm keepin on her about dancing professionally because she's too darn good to let it go to waste. A very good friend of mine is some sort of event coordinator for ABT as well. AND one of my sister's old dance partners dances with Alvin Ailey. Clifton Brown...ever heard of him? He's a sweetheart. Anyway, hope I didn't step on any toes (those are important to ya, I know!) with the dancing comments...just a lil harmless teasing is all. But I really am interested to hear where you're dancing!

Welcome to OT, Phoenix! That's a great picture of your daughter and we're looking forward to our own addition to the family pretty soon.Très exotique! I'm familiar with where Mons is in Belgium -- I spent a little time there during the exchange trip I was on (3 months in England and France), visiting Oostende and Antwerp. Also went to Bruxelles (that's Brussels for you anglophones) during our family trip through Europe one summer in my youth. One thing I particularly remember from my trips there is the french fries -- french fried potatoes is probably more accurate as I got served a plate of uniquely shaped fries, shapes like half-moons, crescents, stars, balls, squares, etc. Look forward to more of your posts and, again, welcome to our zoo.

62. "Welcome" |
Well, I guess I should join the welcoming party, too. Welcome to the board, PhoenixMons ... and thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures of yourself and your daughter with us.I should add that I love Belgium, because the only two truly bilingual cities that I've ever been to are Ottawa and Brussels (and for the same reason -- the French moved in and refused to give up their precious language). And yes, I did know that pommes frites came from Belgium. However, I can't think of Belgium without three images coming to mind: 1. The Monty Python skit "Prejudice" that included a contest to find a derogatory term for Belgians. 2. The European Union HQ. 3. The ethnic split between the Dutch (Flemish) and French (Walloons). I know the ethnic tension was sometimes fierce in the early and mid 1990s. In the Flemish regions, as in the Netherlands itself, most everyone can speak English fluently. What about in the French regions? Are they as anti-English as the French themselves, or do they mostly speak English like the Flemish?
