Here in North Carolina. No, really! Swimmers weren't the only ones enjoying a relaxing afternoon at Onslow Beach recently. Officials with Camp Lejeune's Land and Wildlife Resources section were called in to help a 7-foot American alligator navigate the surf and get back to its home in the nearby sound. Sgt. Joseph Jasany, who heads up the lifeguards at Onslow Beach, said reports started coming in around 4:30 p.m. Saturday of alligators in the water. http://www.thetimesnews.com/news/beach-25556-boniface-alligator.html

OMG. Do you suppose they will soon follow the tides up north here?

Not unless global warming gets a lot worse in a hurry. We are at the north end of the historical range so they are native this far north, just relatively uncommon. The ocean is warm enough off the coast here to spawn a tropical storm so that kind of heat lets them live up here, but they usually hang out in the swamps or rivers, not out on the beach. It can get cold near the coast in the winter, but doesn't stay that way for long, but I don't think they can survive if it goes below freezing and stays that way for more than a day or two.

This is one of the reasons why I'm starting to become terrified of going to the beach this summer. Last summer (at Sunset Beach) we encountered LOTS of jelly fish.I don't know what's wrong with me, but I used to be a huge beach bum growing up in SoCal. Maybe it's that I'm getting older, but I hate being afraid. Alligators remind me that GF wants to invite the ex here to water ski. She calls it "Trollin' for gators!" Summer Slice
