A) The very good news:

Obama to Lift Ban on Funding for Embryonic Stem Cell Research

B) The very bad news:

Did Obama Cause the Stock Slide?

C) The even worse news: Obama's people don't care about the very bad news, because it gives them a chance to push their own agenda.

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste," said chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. "This crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not do before."

and

<Hillary> Clinton told young Europeans at the European Parliament that global economic turmoil provided a fresh opening. "Never waste a good crisis . . . Don't waste it when it can have a very positive impact on climate change and energy security," she said.

At least all of the bad news gives us a good reason to drink to forget our troubles. Too bad the hangover from the drink isn't as bad as the hangover from this mess will be (or is).

...but the sticky sucking mud holds his feet, and prevents Max from stepping away.

It's as if an invisible political will is present, and, independently from Max's better self, he is slowly but inevitably pulled deeper into the morass (no offense meant to the morass). Even though he is uniquely able to see what will happen in twenty minutes, Max Headroom is compelled to offer his opinion. He is doomed, fated to dance the dance of the politically opinionated.

In a way it's sad, but it's also a metaphor of life in the cosmos (ed. - not sure what that means, but you gotta admit it sounds good).

He knows that if his thoughts happen to contradict whatever opinion is offered up by those who are wiser and more experienced that he will be wrong, but it doesn't matter. The compulsion is too strong. Max only has the comfort that if the Kingfish also offers a view that at least he, Max, will be smarter than someone.

And now it is unstoppable and it begins, independent of his will, in the diaphragm. It travels over the larynx, with final modulation by his tongue and lips and explodes into the oral world for all to hear! The relief is that of a really good belch.

And Max is on a roll. His fingers, he can't stop their movements, movements that are dooming him to post in RTVW. He can't help it, he has to let everyone know the truth.

The snarky post erupts.

Quick question: Is it Obama who is laying off people left and right? Is it Obama who is not purchasing cars, trucks, refigs, homes, etc? Is is Obama who tries not to talk about nationalizing the banks, Chapter 11, post big sales drops, gets billions in TARP money, etc?

The answer is No so how can you say Obama is responsible for the Stock market since it's been going steadily down for over year as the house of cards started to tumble in 2005/06?

The third part: Is the economy, health care, green energy, housing, redoing many diplomatic and economic relationships around the world and everything what Obama wants to tied together? The answer there is yes so if you tried fixing them in normal times it would be a pain in the butt but in a crisis maybe people will see how they are all tied together and thus finally get something done.....

that's my two cents...hold it....I need that to put gas in the car *takes my pennies back*

Obama's people don't care about the very bad news, because it gives them a chance to push their own agenda.

First: I think you can safely say the same thing for Dubya's people after the WTC attacks.

Second: I think you can also safely say the same thing for every administration during every crisis since the founding of the country.

Third: If you look at the founding of the country as a crisis which allowed people to push their own agenda...

As far as the stock market, yes, to a large degree. The stock market looks ahead, and every time he brings up one of his pie-in-the-sky ideas Wall Street looks at what it's going to do to them and tanks.

I think that this is the big problem in the UK at the moment (I cannot speak about America). The City looks at how changes will affect them, and shares plummet, what they are supposed to be looking at is how the changes will affect the companies whose shares they are dealing in.

Wall street generally reacts positively when taxes are lowered, which is an answer to your question. Especially capital gains.

I meant 'when whose taxes are lowered?', but you just answered that: Wall Street is happy when they're given permission to rake in cash without giving any of it to the government. Anything else and the market drops.

You're comparing apples and oranges. The stock market crash wasn't caused by lower taxes by any stretch of the imagination. The question was what steps taken in Washington doesn't make Wall Street panic, and it still stands as true.

And I'm saying it is not just one item that makes the markets rise or lower (single items will move the market but most of the time it doesn't last as logical market factors override emotions). So just like I can't say it's all W, you can't say it's all tax cuts because W had all the tax cuts in the world and we still ended up where we are right now. It's a mix of no or few regulations, bubbles that burst, over confidence in the markets, and the major one greed, etc.

The Union has done a pretty good job of killing itself. How darn ironic that it's Obama and the Dems who are talking about how greedy and criminal the corporations are, and yet the Union is the poster child for greed and corruption.

The Employee Free Choice Coercion Act hasn't even been signed into law yet, and we already have non-union workers being followed from their jobsites to restaurants, to bars on Super Bowl Sunday and to their homes to try to get cards signed. I can't wait until it really goes into effect, can't wait until I show up at work everyday and have to lock my door and pull my shades because of the union contractor that insisted on buying out the lease early of the company next to us just so they could have that particular space. Can't wait until I have to remove fliers from my vehicle every single day, etc., etc., etc. Can't wait until that big $13 bucks a week stimulus gets eaten up when employers whose business costs increase because of the union pass those costs down to me.

The most ironic part of the whole thing, however, is that Obama is the one who wanted every voice heard, every vote counted. Yet he is about to take away the very right of someone to freely make the decision to join a union by private ballot. I wonder how he and his voters would have felt on election day if Repulicans had been able to imploy such tactics in order to secure votes.

And without the Unions all those who benefited from their fight for fair wages, benefits, safe working conditions, 40 hours work weeks, OT, etc. maybe should go back to the way it was in the early 1900's. I'm not saying what they've done lately did not help create this mess because it did and yes, they need to change with the times and are but the workers watch management take huge bounces, wage jump, perks, etc. It's all apart of whats in it for me and how can a get rich doing the least amount of work. It's all about the greed. Are there skilled trades Union workers who play cards, sleep, etc. Yep....but there are many who work hard and bust their butts. Were the rules set up for protecting those workers and keeping them "on call" just in case they were needed? Yep, but the rules changes in the last contract and these loan negotiations have wiped out the job banks and made the rules much more flexible where anyone will be able to rest a breaker or change a light bulb.

As for the EFCA....the votes are not there from my last reading and Obama did not write the EFCA and if I'm remembering right he is not supportive of it but people want to push it that way to try to push their view of him.

Plus, W and Co. just employed different tactics (FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!) that secured votes for them and got him elected and re-elected and then did what ever the heck they wanted and divided this country to the worst point in its history.

Edit: here is a pdf of the changes to the Ford National contract: Ford National Contract changes

I think we have discussed this before that we're not exactly dealing with one's father's or grandfather's union anymore. The union is now a business. We no longer need proection via way of the union, we need protection from the union. All of us need that protection because of what it costs all of us for someone else to be in a union.

Obama is on record saying that he supports EFCA: link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMNVIQqatyU|Obama's Position]. He already has taken steps toward the union-friendly world when he did away with Bush's Executive Order on PLAs.

I think you are missing my point on the election. As it stands right now, union elections are handled in the same manner in which regular elections are handled - via private vote. W & Co never took away someone's right to a private vote.

And why is the union's a business now? Why...because CEO's use to be steward of the company, to think long term and keep it growing and worry about those who they employed. Then Wall Street got into them and they became hatch guys to make any company have 20% profits a quarter and make millions in bounces and perks for themselves and then when they've run that company into the ground their circle of CEO/board members buddies would hire then again and again thus keeping them all living high off the hog. So what were Union's doing after watching this happen over and over? They emulated it and they also thought about themselves vs. their members. They could care less if the CEO's broke up and sold off viable parts of the business or ship all the jobs overseas as long as the union bosses got theirs. They all sold us down the river.

Thus we have what we have now with Wall Street setting the rules for the board room and executives and no one caring about the long term health of the company or the people that work for them. They've exported out the middle class and instead of "bringing those new part of the world up to the American's standards and wages", it's the reverse in this global market. Wall Street and the exec's all complain that they can't compete with the wages set here in the US or the regulations so we are going down to the rest instead of the rest of the world coming up to competed. Workers need to take the pay cuts and take benefits cuts to save layoffs but then six months later the company folds up shop and goes where it's cheaper. This is where Unions need to work on their protection and get people to start thinking long term and not what is the stock price today and not what is their own perks, pay, and greed they can suck out of the company. Go back to thinking if it was family owned and everyone is part of your family. Look at small banks, credit unions, etc. in small towns. They are not going broke but their bankers are not making millions. Why? They care about the people and they know if the people are doing well then they will be doing well and they'll all survived and grow together.

You can say that they will all cost us more.....I say they're work gave us what we have. All those foreign automotive companies down south did not offer wages very close to the UAW's and a good benefit plan (yes, not as good as the UAW's) for a reason....to please the people, give them something better than what was there where they lived and give those people hope for a better life not only for themselves but their kids and their kids kids....and last to keep the Union's out. Why, because yes they would demanded more and such but it also keeps their legacy cost down and avoid what Big 3 face today. Those companies are looking long term where US companies no longer due but don't for a second think they are really looking out for those people who work there. Just like every company out there now, we are all a piece of meat that can be replaced at any second and then we are just holding an empty bag.

Look at Walmart and who they treat their people and how long it's taken to stop looking people in and not paying OT to stock shelves when the store closes. How long and how much pressure it took to even offer their people an affordable health care instead of forcing them onto Welfare where we all paid for it. Look at that Window factory in Illinois that said they were broke and left everyone on the hook but amazing enough the owners opened the same size window factory in Iowa where there was no union. Look at Ireland who cut their business taxes and 100's of companies moved there and they grew by leaps and bounds and people started to make more and more money. Now, Poland's offered lower and longer lasting tax breaks and cheaper labor and Ireland, who many Pubs pointed to as a model of free markets, is fall apart faster than Iceland. These places have nationalize health care and some nationalize pensions but the US model is the company provides the health care and some sort of pension/401K/Def Comp/IRA/Roth IRA/etc. Thus we can't compete unless we give all that up and then what hope do you have for your kids? or your kids kids? Since you have nothing are you going to move in with your kids and drag them down more as they try to take care of you? The future does not look good for any in the middle class in the US.

Why? because you can't regulate or legislate greed and we just cannot learn from the past so this will happen over and over until the middle class is totally gone.

As for the EFCA: The major provision as I understand is that if a majority want a union the company has to negotiate with that union and not one that the company chooses.

From wikipedia:

Under current labor law, workers can select union representation either through an election process or through majority sign-up (also known as “card check”). However, the U.S. National Labor Relations Board will certify a union as the exclusive representative of employees only if it is selected by a secret ballot NLRB election. Such an election is held if more than 30 percent of employees in a bargaining unit sign cards asking for representation by a union. Yet a company can refuse to bargain with a union chosen by workers through majority sign-up, even if 100 percent of the workers want to be represented by the union. The choice of whether to use an election process or majority sign-up to form the union is now exclusively controlled by companies. If enacted, the Employee Free Choice Act would require the NLRB to certify a bargaining representative without directing an election if a majority of the bargaining unit employees signed such cards through the majority sign-up process.<4>

Thus, the Employee Free Choice Act is intended to guarantee workers their right to choose a bargaining representative through either majority sign-up or an election process. Instead of companies determining the method of organization, workers would have the ability to make that decision for themselves.

Majority sign-up is not new. Since the inception of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935, it has been legal for workers to form a union when a majority of employees in a bargaining unit sign cards indicating their intent to be represented by the union, in order to negotiate a contract with the employer to gain better wages and benefits.<5>

The majority sign-up process has been endorsed by Congress, the courts and the NLRB for decades. Not only was it widely used in the early days following the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act; it is today the most common method for workers to form unions.

The Employee Free Choice Act also provides a process to ensure that workers who choose a union can have a contract. Pursuant to the bill, a union can demand that a company begin bargaining within ten days of certification of the union as the exclusive bargaining representative for an appropriate unit of employees via either an NLRB election or majority sign-up (card check).<1> If the union and company cannot agree upon the terms of a first collective bargaining contract within ninety days, either party can request federal mediation, which could lead to binding arbitration if an agreement still cannot be reached after thirty days of mediation.<1> Finally, the Act would provide for liquidated damages of three times back pay if employers were found to have unlawfully terminated pro-union employees.<6> The Employee Free Choice Act would also impose a $20,000 penalty upon employers for each employer violation of the proposed legislation if the NLRB or a court deems the violation willful or repetitive.<1><7> Injunctive relief is available to make sure remedies are meaningful and effective.

Employee Free Choice Act

I'm not 100% up on it so if someone has something better or something different post it....

Maybe if I simplify it, it will help:

Government, Wall Street, CEO's/management, and Labor (Union and non-union) are all responsible for this mess and not adapting to the global forces out there and thinking that everyone would come up to our standards.

So I think it's wrong to just point the finger at one group and make it a point to punish just that group. They all need to change and adapt. It will never be the same as it was.

Sorry Hobbs, I probably should have put this {{/sarcasm}} in.
Don't you know that anyone who says something positive about Obama must be a socialist? Besides, Cahaya has lived in one of them ferin countries and now he works for a university. Need I say more?

LOL...sorry....I'm just sick of everyone saying what he is doing is socialism while those things W did were done "just to protect us" and see it worked.

Heck Mrs. Hobbs was born and raised in one and has very interesting view on things.

Yeah, Prof was pulling my leg (and yes, I'm familiar with his wit and humor!).

In reality, instead of 'Socialist!' it would be 'Centrist!' And we know how centrists are treated by both sides of the aisle, and I think that's what he was driving at.

28. "Centrists?"
In the political climate of the last umpteen decades centrists have had few options, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. It is very unfortunate. We need a populist movement, in my opinion. Certainly, I'll lose some battles if populism takes hold, but I can live with that.

Especially in education.

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

Before I have to start dodging incoming projectiles, my wife taught for many years. And based on the large majority of educators she worked with, she agrees with my assessment.

DS is batting .667 on teachers in his 6 years of public education (four good ones, two terrible ones). On most grading scales, that's a D.

I don't agree with your assessment. I find it insulting. For the record, I could have done anything I wanted, and I CHOSE to teach because it's what I LOVE to do, and I work very hard at it all year long. I would never imply that all teachers are wonderful, any more than all lawyers, doctors, or plumbers are. But that "those who can, do" expression is a slap in the face to those of us who take our jobs seriously.

I admire those that are called to teach. I think that old saying is ridiculous.

I'm sorry if you were insulted by my post-- it wasn't intended that way.

This school year has been one of DS's two "bad teacher" years, and recently I've been particularly frustrated by his current teacher. It's amazing to me that such a burnt-out, unmotivated teacher would be teaching the gifted/talented class, but... it is what it is. Add in a large dose of school system bureaucracy, and the end result is a dissatisfied, disillusioned parent.

Four of his teachers have been outstanding. Based on your enthusiasm for teaching, I'm sure you would be in that category too.
