"who's The Greatest American?" |
Recently, there was a competition to determine who would be the Greatest Canadian. So... I thought I'd turn this over to you smarties here on OT to see who should be considered The Greatest American -- let's see if we can beat the TV networks to this concept! So who is it? George Washington? Muhummad Ali? Abraham Lincoln? Pauly Shore? Simply, The Greatest American should be someone who impacted or influenced the United States of America the most, and forever changed the nation. It could be a politician, a professional, an entertainer, an athlete, or an cultural icon. Here's how it will work: Make a nomination for who you think deserves mention as The Greatest American. Add in a few reasons why you think this person deserves mention. For ideas on how the Greatest Canadian top ten nominees had their merits sold, check this out. You can second someone else's nomination and you can also add extra reasons why that person deserves it. In fact, seconding a nomination will help solidify the chances of that person making it to the final ten. After people have had their say on nominations, I'll go through the names and see if I can whittle it down to ten names for a vote. Any other Canadians (hello, aethelstan?) interested in helping out on this subject is welcome! Then after a vote is run on the ten finalists, I'll whittle it down to three finalists then you all can argue the merits of each of the finalists before having a final vote. Let's have it, folks!

MLK Jr. The man had such a commanding presence. His use of the Bible to change minds for openness, instead of narrowness, is what I always admired about him. He was strong, wise, and did more for this country than any flimsy president ever could. I always consider him a modern prophet, and hold him as a great hero.

I think it's a toss up between Washington and Lincoln, but I have to give the edge to Lincoln for a couple of reasons. The first being that Washington was rebelling for his own freedom against a foreign power, while Lincoln was fighting for other people's freedoms against his own countrymen. And the second being that Lincoln gave his life in the service of that cause.

Obviously, Washington (at one time the richest man in America -- because, similar to Kerry, he married the widow of the richest man in America), Jefferson, Hamilton and Lincoln deserve consideration. So do Thomas Edison, Tom Watson Sr., Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, Andrew Carnegie and Eli Whitney. So do the Wright Brothers, although they are a duo rather than a man or woman. But my money is with the money man himself: the man who transformed American attitudes about the rich as he transformed business in America ... and who was also most responsible for the growth of the "oil economy" that continues to thrive to this very day.Plus, he made NYC the centerpiece of American commerce. NYC was the largest city in the US, and it was the main commercial center, but there were plenty of other centers. Johnny Rock moved his HQ to Manhattan, and NYC rose to a new and greater prominence ... which also meant the end of Tammany Hall and the great era of NYC urban corruption. MLK? Great man. Not even close to the greatest.

LAST EDITED ON 12-02-04 AT 11:14 AM (EST)I'll be happy to help out, Pepe. I'd just like to comment on Ayak's list here: Obviously, Washington (at one time the richest man in America -- because, similar to Kerry, he married the widow of the richest man in America), Jefferson, Hamilton and Lincoln deserve consideration. So do Thomas Edison, Tom Watson Sr., Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, Andrew Carnegie and Eli Whitney. So do the Wright Brothers, although they are a duo rather than a man or woman. At this stage of the process (mostly a brainstorming), I think that all of these should be nominated so that all the great Americans are named. Then a separate thread could be started to get our top 10. After that, I think it would be nice if on OT poster presented a little blurb on why they think so-and-so is the greatest American, and they we can have our first vote. What do you think? And, along those lines, other nominations should include Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ben Franklin. Should we go into immigrants too like Albert Einstein, Alex Bell, etc? Also, we should look not only in the fields of politics and science but also include entertainment, sports, etc. Thus I'd also nominate Michael Jordan, Mohammed Ali, Jesse Owens, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Mark Twain, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorcese, etc. ©Kittyloaf Creations, 2003

LAST EDITED ON 12-02-04 AT 02:43 PM (EST)Sounds good. But I wonder if there should be a breakdown by field. I saw a previous 'greatest Canadian' thing where it has been broken down by fields such as: politics, science, music, sports, literature, hero, etc. I've done a little googling and here's a few more names that should probably be on a list (there may be some repetition with already mentioned names): G. Washington, S. Adams, T. Jefferson, MLK, Abe, Frederick Douglass, J. Madison, T. Roosevelt, FDR, B. Franklin, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, H. Truman, J. Adams, R. Reagan, J. Marshall, H. 71. "Well..." |
The only woman that I believe has a case to be in the top 10 is Amelia Earhart. To give you an idea of the state of women in the U.S. throughout history, she became a gigantic U.S. celebrity for being the first woman to cross the Atlantic ... but she crossed as a PASSENGER in a plane flown by two men (the backers wouldn't let her fly, though she was already an accomplished pilot). It took her four more years (and a marriage to the wealthy publisher George Putnam) before she could get the backing to fly solo across the Atlantic (the first woman to fly across and the first person, man or woman, to cross twice); three more years before she soloed across the Pacific (the first person, man or woman, to do so). No wonder that she became the most famous woman in American history ... and no wonder that her death was such a shocker. "Please know I am quite aware of the hazards. I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others." -- Earhart, 1937. This isn't to denigrate the contributions of the other women, but we're talking about top 10!

72. "RE: Well..." |
LAST EDITED ON 12-02-04 AT 05:10 PM (EST)Point taken. I'm only trying to throw out as many names so that certain names don't get overlooked because they aren't in politics or inventors. It comes down to people's definition of greatness. Regarding women. They are inherently at a disadvantage in these types of polls because of the glass ceiling still extant in many industries. See your own post about Amelia Earhart. I'd add Babe Didrickson Zaharias to the list of top 10 women, as a minimum because she was an amazing multi-sport athlete and no doubt had a profound influence on many others to take up various sports. In sports, one could add Navratilova for her extended dominance and Althea Gibson for being women's and tennis's Jackie Robinson. Both no doubt were positive role models for women which, lets not forget, make up half the voting public in the US (and everywhere else) In entertainment, perhaps Ella Fitzgerald or Aretha Franklin. Though, to be honest, unless they've invented a new genre and/or had a huge impact on multiple socio-economic groups, I can't see entertainers (movies, sports, literature) competing well against nation builders and scientist/innovators. Edited to add: I think too special mention should be made of my daughter's namesake, Eleanor Roosevelt. She was instrumental along with John Peters Humphrey and others in formulating the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. (quote from Wikipedia) If anything, the UDHR will become more significant if separation of Church and State will truly happen as that secular document will supplant the religion-based version to become the moral standard. ©Kittyloaf Creations, 2003

Interesting list. There are a few here I'd thought of that hadn't already been mentioned. Notably:16. Henry Ford (or did Aya mention him already?) 34. Bill Gates (not just for software; his philanthropy is HUGE) 57. Robert Oppenheimer (MAJOR influence on life as we know it today) 61. Walt Disney (anyone with kids, just look at your video collection) A few others I'd add as people I wouldn't put as number one, but who would probably be in my top 100: Oprah Winfrey (like her or not, she's had a pretty profound influence in a number of ways) Lewis and Clark (and I'm kinda surprised not to see any other names from the "frontier" era) Jane Fonda (again, another like her or not person who influenced this country in a number of ways) Ted Turner (CNN, anyone?) 77. "RE: who's The Greatest American?" |
First, A Quick Useless Tidbit on William Katt's GAH ... His character was named Ralph Hinkley, but the week after John Hinkley shot President Reagan in March 1981, the Powers That Be at ABC decided that hearing the name Hinkley might offend. In the episodes that were already 'in the can' anytime someone said Ralph's last name, there was suddenly some drowning-out sound (like a school bell ringing or plane roaring) that masked the name. Later episodes, he was simply referred to as "Mr. H."
But on to the LIST:My nominees-- not prioritized Henry Ford (with his affordable cars, people became daily commuters. He also invented the assembly line, meaning unskilled workers could get well-paid jobs) Jerry Lewis (a master of comedy and compassion -- where would the MDA be without his Herculean efforts over the past five decades?) Abraham Lincoln (much of which has already been said) Martin Luther King, Jr. (see Lincoln) Sally Ride (first American woman in space -- inspired millions of girls to achieve the highest in science, aviation and engineering) Bill Gates (would we be having this conversation without the impact of this guy?)

79. "Teddy. Greatest. American. Ever." |
The perfect president at the right time.Reasons to love Teddy Roosevelt: 10) He set aside more National Park land than the land mass of France. A pity he didn't actually set France aside as a German national park. It would have saved a lot of blood, no? He helped bring the bloody and ruinous Russo-Japanese War to an end. 9) He was the first president to attack corrupt big businesses. 8) Fought to free the Cubans from the Spanish (though was racist by our standards, admittedly). 7) Had the guts to invite Booker T. Washington over to a White House dinner and weather the storm. 6) Once threatened to throw a coal mine owner out a 2nd story White House window. He was the original Butt-kicking president. 5) He set aside more National Park land than the land mass of France. A pity he didn't actually set France aside as a German national park. It would have saved a lot of blood, no? 4) Pure Food and Drug Act. Products now labeled and advertising claims proven. 3) He worked to get kids out of factories. 2) His Panama Canal was an boost to the world's infrastructure that saved trillions of dollars more than it ever cost. 1) And the best thing...No rats in our sausage! After reading The Jungle, Teddy fought for the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 which provided for more inspections of meatpacking plants. If you've ever read The Jungle, you know why it was necessary.

...did everyone forget him? Where would we be without him... The good ones are all spoken for, but Lincoln and Edison are top 5 at least, maybe top 3.

Daniel Boone was a man. Yes a big man. With an eye like an eagle and as tall as a mountain was he. Daniel Boone was a man. Yes a big man. He was brave he was fearless and as tough as a mighty oak treeFrom the coonskin cap on the top of ole Dan To the heel of his rawhide shoe The rippin’est roarin’est fightin’est man The frontier ever knew. Daniel Boone was a man. Yes a big man. And he fought for America to make all Americans free. What a Boone. What a wonder. What a dream comer truer was he.
